Jock’s Sports Bar
The Future Tense With Going To, Will, Present Continuous
A sports bar is often a sports-themed bar and restaurant. In the dining room, large-screen
HDTVs show many different types of sporting events. The customers watch their favorite sports
teams in action while they enjoy a meal. Two types of food frequently served in sports bars in
the United States are buffalo style chicken wings and baby back ribs. Buffalo style chicken
wings are sometimes called hot wings, chicken wings, or buffalo wings. The chicken is fried
and coated in a spicy sauce made from vinegar, cayenne pepper hot sauce, and butter.
Baby back ribs is a popular meat dish. It is made from the rib cage of a pig. The ribs are either grilled or baked, and
then coated with barbecue sauce. Friends often meet at sports bars to catch a game and eat some great food.

The Future Tense.
The future tense can be expressed in three ways.
Subject + Be + Going To + Verb
Justin is going to have a bowl of chili and ribs with chicken wings and fries.
Subject + Will + Verb
Pam will have a tossed salad, the wings and shrimp platter, and a brownie.
When a specific time in the future is understood, the present continuous tense can be used.
Subject + Be + Verb(Ing)
Anita is having buffalo wings with fries, slaw, and Texas toast.
Practice the dialog below.
Server: Good evening. How is everybody doing?
Justin: Just great.
Server: Fine. Can I take you drink order?
Justin: Yes. Let’s see. Pam will have a soda. Anita is having a glass of red wine. Henry is going to have a bottle of
imported beer, and I am having a draft beer.
Server: OK. I will be right back with your drinks.
The server returns with the drinks.
Server: All right now! What are you going to eat?
Justin: Well, Pam will have a tossed salad, the wings and shrimp platter, and a brownie. Anita is having buffalo wings
with fries, slaw, and Texas toast. Henry is going to have a wings and ribs platter, and another beer. I am having a bowl
of chili, and ribs with chicken wings and fries. Oh, I will have another beer, too.
Sever: Let’s see. That will be: a tossed salad, a wings and shrimp platter, and a brownie; buffalo wings with fries,
slaw, and Texas toast; a wings and ribs platter, and a bottle of imported beer; a bowl of chili, ribs and chicken with fries,
and a draft beer. Will that be all?
Justin: Yes.
Server: OK. I will be back shortly with your food.
Group Activity. Use the menu on page 4 to create and practice a dialog of your own.
