The Titanic was a famous British passenger ship that struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912 while traveling from Southampton, England to New York City. It carried about 2,200 passengers and crew but only had lifeboats for half that number. The ship broke in two and sank within hours of colliding with the iceberg, and over 1,500 people lost their lives.
