8. High risk of flood, low and static yield characterize the
rice production
Heavy rains during May to August cause flooding and
affecting the winter rice is adversely in the process.
More often, the flood wave coincides with the maturing
and/or harvesting period of summer and Kharif rice in
many areas and wash away valuable output.
The performance of the summer rice (boro) has also
been uneven due to its high dependency on the input
availability, especially irrigation.
Major Challenges
Grameen Sahara
9. Features of Proposed Project Areas:
The areas fall under the lower Brahmaputra Valley
Zone: contributes maximum to the total rice area and
production in the state of Assam . But the productivity
of rice is the least in this zone.
Climate is sub-tropical
Average rainfall is 2169 mm
Average number of rainy days is 95
The district experiences floods of moderate to severe
during monsoon.
Economy of the district is an agrarian.

Our Next Planning:
Promotion SRI Among the Farmers of Four Different Blocks of Goalpara
District of Assam
Grameen Sahara
11. Base line indicators:
Production of rice per crop per acre is low (About 700-800 Kg)
Normally single cropping practice is in existence.
Hardly any of the target farmers are aware about SRI; with the
implementation of the project more and more farmers will be skilled to
adopt SRI principles.
There is no producer or common interest group, and the farmers clubs are
almost dormant. Producers groups will be in existence to take care of
farmers needs in future;
Increase in production will be an important indicator for the project;
