Energy Efficiency and Climate Change
• IPCC AR4 => EE key role in CC mitigation
• EE could save 7.1 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030 (IEA)
• Energy efficiency measures are cheaper, cleaner and faster to
install than any other energy options
Large scale deployment of EE in developing countries
=> Major goal and challenge for the international
community

• Economic growth and development => energy
demand growth
• Tendency to focus on Energy supply (increasing the
country’s production capacity)
• Developing countries have higher energy intensities
=> highly benefit from investments in energy
efficiency measures
UNEP Regional Climate Change Networks
• In line with CoP 16 outcome on the establishment of a
Technology Mechanism and related CTCN
Objectives:
• Speed the development of good policies,
• Foster the sharing of best practices and information, and
• Accelerate the deployment of climate friendly technologies
Status:
• 3 Networks operating: SEA, Central Asia and LAC

technology. Analysis and global recommendations

4. Consumer and environmental protection
5. Off-grid lighting

Global Solar Water Heating Objective: Accelerate commercialization and market
Market Transformation and transformation of solar water heating, thereby reducing

Budget: $5.72 Million ($3.75 GEF)

Global Technology Needs Objective: Identify and support deployment of mitigation and
Assessment (TNA) adaptation technology priorities of countries
Budget: $11 Million (8.18 GEF SCCF)

Zero Emissions Project opportunity to introduce best practices in architecture and urban

Facilitating Implementation Objective: Support developing countries make a “quick start” on
