Travel culture in Korea has drastically changed since 1989, the year
after 88 Seoul Olympics, when overseas travel limitation was lifted.
In the 1990s, most of the travel patterns were group package.
Then, in 2000s individual backpacking became popular due to
development of the Internet and means of transportation.
Recently Korean travelers pay great attention to global climate
change, carbon offset, and sustainable tourism.

6. In the past, Korean travels used to be
led by travelers or travel agencies.
However, as public awareness of
environment and responsible travels
has been raised, travels are increasingly
focused on respecting local
environment and people.
Domestically Green Tourism around
agricultural regions is rising. And
Responsible Tourism(Fair-travel) or
Good Travel are becoming more and
more popular for international travels.
The number of travel agencies as social
enterprise specializing in sustainable
tourism is growing as well. Particularly
the community-based tourism, driven
by local people, is being introduced as
a way to consider local economy and
environment while increasing local
employment at the same time.
7. Travel Agents in Korea
For the past 20 years the number of Korean travelers has increased so rapidly
that now annually 13 million people travel abroad.
Asia, including China, Japan and Southeast Asian countries consists the 76%
of all the overseas travels. The number of travel agencies has grown rapidly
as well.
Now there are approximately five thousand travel agencies, among which
three thousand are dedicated to overseas travels.
8. Sustainable Tourism, however, has to compete against mega travel
agencies that lead low-cost shopping-driven tourism.
In addition, as a social enterprise it is very difficult for sustainable
travel agencies to develop travel products independently and without
any structural support from the government.
Various information networking is crucial as well in developing
sustainable travel products.
9. 1) Inbound Travels by Foreign Visitors
In 2008, 6.89 million people visited Korea. This translates into 8.6 billion
dollars (ten trillion Korean Won) in tourism income. Four countries out
of the 5 most visited are visitors from Asian countries (71.9% of total
visitors). Therefore, sustainable tourism needs to be developed
accordingly.
