_____________________________________________________________
Overview
International Organisations Day offers the opportunity to learn about a number of the
leading multilateral organisations. Representatives from the participating international
institutions will each have 75 minutes in which to give a presentation and answer
questions from the audience. The presentation will cover:
• the role played by their organisation and the kinds of work performed by their
staff
• the education and experience that these employers are looking for
• the employment opportunities that they offer, e.g., staff and consultant positions
for candidates with experience; young professional programmes; and JPO, JPA
and intern vacancies.
Participating Organisations
The following organisations have registered to attend the event, and one or two more are
expected.
• Asian Development Bank
• European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
• European Investment Fund
• European Parliament
• European Personnel Selection Office
• International Committee for the Red Cross
• International Finance Corporation
• Inter-American Development Bank
• International Trade Centre
• UN Secretariat/ UN Peacekeeping Operations
• UN Development Programme
• UNHCR
• World Bank
• World Health Organisation
Note: This year the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank will
attend Central Banking and Regulation Day at LSE on Saturday, 21st November.
2. What you can expect
Purpose
The main purpose of the event is for the international organisations to describe the role
that they play and the kind of jobs they can offer, and for students to be able to pose
questions to their representatives.
Interviews
Some organisations will also conduct interviews at LSE on 7 November. Students
interested in being interviewed should first check that they have the required
qualifications and then should make an application as soon as possible directly to the
organisation concerned – following the instructions given in the announcements below.
If the employers are interested, they will contact the candidates directly and inform them
of the time and place of their interview.
The need to be realistic
The number of students interviewed on International Organisations Day is likely to be
modest – perhaps 100 candidates at most. While a small number will end up receiving a
job or internship offer as a result of International Organisations Day, most participants
should see this event principally as an opportunity to learn more about the international
organisations in which they are interested and to understand the kind of work experience
and qualifications that they will need to gain to join these organisations in the future. The
reality is that most international institutions require a minimum of a PhD, or a Masters
degree with some years of relevant work experience for their professional level entry
programmes. These organisations typically hire staff only after several years of
experience when applicants have built up specialized knowledge and experience working
elsewhere.
**IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ**
If you wish to attend International Organisations Day, please
register with the Careers and Employability Centre on
campus. There are 40 places available and these will be
allocated on a first come first served basis.
Email careersevents@sussex.ac.uk with ‘LSE’ in the subject of
your email. Once 40 places have been allocated, interested
students will be placed on a reserve list and contacted only if a
place becomes available.
There will be a fee of £10 per head which the Careers and Employability Centre will fund
so it is very important that you are committed to attending this event.
3. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE EVENT IF YOU HAVE NOT REGISTERED
IN ADVANCE. ONLY THOSE STUDENTS ON THE LIST THAT LSE
RECEIVES FROM YOUR CAREERS SERVICE WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE
FAIR.
