2. What is ERCP
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a endoscopic
procedure. It is used both in the diagnosis and treatment of many pancreatic and
biliary diseases.
In ERCP , endoscope is inserted through the mouth and moved down the throat
into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum until it reaches the point where the
ducts from the pancreas and gallbladder drain into the duodenum. If any
abnormal growth is seen while endoscope then a sample of tissue is taken for
further test (biopsy).If gallstone is present in a gallbladder, then surgeon remove
the stone with the help of instrument inserted through the endoscope. The
procedure is generally done using intravenous sedation, but sometimes is done
under general anesthesia. Doctor advice not to drink or eat anything for six to
eight hours before the procedure.
