The Jan Lokpal Bill proposed establishing an independent anti-corruption ombudsman organization called the Jan Lokpal at the central government level and corresponding Jan Lokayuktas at the state level. Each would have 10 members including a chairperson to independently investigate and prosecute cases of corruption against public servants. If found guilty, the Jan Lokpal would have the power to dismiss corrupt officers or impose penalties. Trials would also have to be completed within one year to ensure swift punishment of corruption. The bill also aimed to protect citizen's rights by requiring government departments to specify timelines for services and addressing public grievances through an oversight officer within 30 days.
