09:30 Treasure Hunt The new letter/sound is introduced.
Pictures (beginning with the letter/sound) are displayed on
the whiteboard one at a time. When all the pictures are
displayed, the students close their eyes, while the pictures
are hidden around the classroom. The students open their
eyes, and are asked one at a time to find a certain picture.
They are given clues, and follow instructions, as they hunt for
the picture. Once they find the picture, they place it back on
the whiteboard. These pictures are later placed around the
edges of the whiteboard, and are referenced throughout the
week during Handwriting and Phonic lessons.

9:50AM Eagle Sam
Eagle Sam watches the students during the day, and catches them being good.
That night he writes a special note to each of those students, and the notes are
presented by the teacher the next morning.
9:50AM Care Bear Certificates
The students are constantly acknowledged for making good choices, trying
hard etc. The adults in the classroom give students stickers as they are
“caught being good”. When the students’ sticker charts are full, the sticker
sheet is pasted onto a Care Bear certificate. The students take their first,
tenth and every consecutive tenth Care Bear Certificate to Jennie Stewart,
our principal. Jennie acknowledges their achievements and gives them a
special “Principal Sticker”.
8. Block 1 (continued)
10:00AM Buddies
Our Buddy Class is Room 13. Karen Rodger prepares her Year 5 class at the
beginning of each year, by sharing ideas as to how they can best support their
buddies in Room 4. Each Room 4 student is allocated 1 to 2 buddies. When the
buddies arrive, they join in with a simple movement to music activity. The Room 4
students then sit on their allocated space on the horseshoe mat, and their buddies
sit behind them. The Big Book is introduced, in preparation for the following week.
All the students participate in this activity, then move to the tables to work on a
worksheet together. Everyone then participates in a Kid Pix activity, which is
projected onto the screen. The repeated phrase in the Big Book is used, and the
student’s name is written in to the phrase. Each student has a turn to go up to the
screen and identify a focus word that their buddy has chosen. After this activity,
it is time for the buddies to go back to their classroom. The Room 4 students
watch and listen to an interactive story from our blog, to settle before getting
ready for Morning Tea.
9. Morning Tea
10:40AM Morning Tea
Students line up at the sink to wash their hands.
They each stand on numbered footprints and gradually move forward.
Hand washing is monitored by a teacher-aide to ensure that the job is done well.
Students then get their lunch boxes out of their bags, and sit down at a table to eat their Morning
Tea snacks. Teacher-aides monitor the eating and drinking to ensure that the students don’t choke/
aspirate and to ensure that they do eat their snacks.
When finished, the students pack their lunch boxes back into their school bags, and go out to play.
Teacher-aides monitor the students during play, to ensure that they are safe and happy.

11:00AM Library Reading
Students choose a library book from the Library Corner,
and read for approximately 5 minutes.
They can either read on their own, or read with a
classmate or a teacher.
11:10AM Jolly Jingles + Developmental Activities
The Jolly Phonics sound of the week, is the same as the Handwriting letter of the week.
(The sound and the letter is introduced on the Friday, in preparation for the following week.)
The students sing the Jolly Jingle and do the actions. They also discuss the pictures related to the
Jolly Jingle.
11:20AM Craft + Developmental Activities
Teachers prepare a craft activity each week, which consolidates the sound/letter of the week, and
encourages the students to use a variety of equipment eg: hole punch, stapler, tweezers, glue
stick, paintbrush, stationery etc. An exemplar of the craft activity is shared with the students on
the Friday. Two to three students work on the activity with a teacher-aide each day during the
reading block.
11. Block 2 (continued)
11:30AM Social Skills
Students learn these skills through play. We use various aids to support their learning eg:
masks to encourage eye contact when greeting, emotion fans and videos to bring their
attention to different facial expressions and identify how someone is feeling. We learn to
take turns and respond to instructions when playing “Duck Duck Goose” and “Hide ‘n
Seek”.
11:50AM Garden
We take turns to weed the garden, till the soil and plant seedlings/seeds.
