USING SNAPCHAT IN
CLASSROOM
By Sumaira Zaheer
AIMS
 This workshops aims at:
 Getting you familiarized with snapchat features
 Showing you samples from my classroom snapchat activities
 Practice using snapchat to teach and practice different skills and apply
them to our lessons.
REQUIREMENTS
This workshop is work completely digital and paper-free format. Make
sure that you have an internet connection and snapchat already installed
into your phone.
Thanks
WHAT IS SNAPCHAT
 For those of you that aren’t aware, Snapchat is a messaging app that
allows users to send and receive messages directly from each other,
then disappear once viewed.
 Additionally, Snapchat offers users the ability to create stories that can
be seen by any follower for 24 hours.
WHY USE SNAPCHAT IT’S SIMPLE!!!
 To communicate and connect with your students in their preferred
digital environments.
FEATURES
SNAPCHAT STORIES
 Snapchat allows you to send a sequence of short “snaps” of video or
images with the addition of text, bitmojis, drawings and geofilters, but
instead of directing these to a particular group or individual, stories
are published for your follower audience and are available for 24
hours. After the 24 hours, they expire.
USING STORIES IN CLASS
 Stories provide a way for teachers to communicate content and allow
students to access this information on their schedule.
 Teachers can send snaps to students in groups to share reminders,
congratulate or acknowledge successes and to describe real-world
examples by posting images or videos with text overlay.
 Post content which is available only 24 hours thus giving student a
strict timeline to work any assigned project.
 Ask students to post stories on a related topic.
HOW TO
VIEW
OTHER’S
STORIES
INTRODUCTORY TASK:
 Post a snap story (photo or video). Say or write what you’re doing right
now!!!
FEATURES
 Private messaging- you can text your friends without having a conversation history or text thread.
Just like photos text messages disappear after you read them.
 Private posts- post your photos and videos privately for chosen users.
 Screenshot- Snapchat is the best app to detect stalkers. The moment someone takes a screenshot of
your photo snapchat notifies you. Good thing is everyone knows this and people are too embarrassed
to be caught taking a screenshot.
 You can set screenshot rules for your students: add in the instructions they are allowed to take
screenshots or not!
 Geo-stories- Amazing feature that lets you know what's going on around the worlds by showing you
snaps from every location on globe.
 Custom Setting on View my Story: You can block people from viewing your story
 Snapchat filters and location Filters: every location has a filter. Swipe right to get the KAU filter.
 Featured stories- You subscribe and unsubscribe to stories from big names such as CNN, Mashable,
Cosmopolitan, National Geographic, MBC, Sayidaty and much more. You’ll find loads of interesting
content to use with your students.
WHY IS SNAPCHAT THE BEST APP IN THE
WHOLE WIDE WORLD (ACCORDING TO OUR STUDENTS
AND ME)
 Here’s the thing – Snapchat doesn’t have comments, or likes, or dislikes,
or sharing. So no haters!!!
 And you know what else is awesome for impromptu multilingual
stories? They’re deleted after 24 hours.
 You have the option to save them for yourself of course, but you have
no “profile” as such with a stored history of your every mistake. So no
embarrassing memories!
TASK1
Open your snap and try to remember what you see in the picture story!!
Describe the picture story to your friend. Compare your ideas.
IDEAS FOR USING SNAPCHAT IN
CLASSROOM
Vocabulary-Add to story snaps of funny, interesting or
breathtaking
pictures with vocabulary words as the text caption.
• Real world examples- When you see a perfect example of
your
content in real life, take a picture or video of it and add it to your
story
• Mark up or label images — send students images asking them
• to mark them up or label them.
• Congratulate or shoutouts- use Snapchat stories to
congratulate achievements as rewards as Shout-outs.
• Reminders and notifications
• Virtual study sessions – Flipped classroom
• Movies
• Jokes
• Creating Memes
• Reposting
• Screenshot activities
• First to view and reply activities
SHOUT-OUT + ERROR CORRECTION
TASK 2:
SHARE
YOUR
REMEDIES!
104 UNIT 7 P 55
GIVING INSTRUCTIONS VIA SNAPCHAT
TASK 3: DESIGN INSTRUCTION AND
ACTIVITY
TASK: CREATE A GRAMMAR TASK FROM
ANY SOURCE USING SNAPCHAT
RUN CHALLENGES
THINGS TO CONSIDER
• Before launching into a new Snapchat account, there are several things to consider, including:
• Will you add students back as friends?
– If so, you’ll have access to their content and will have two-way communication with them.
– If not, you’ll be broadcasting content one-way — to them.
• What are your goals for using Snapchat?
• What kinds of pictures and videos do you intend to use?
• What’s your tone going to be? If you’re a classroom connecting with students,
too serious a tone will likely chase students off.
• Remember, you can’t make them follow you on Snapchat
(and you probably shouldn’t try), and when it feels “too much like formal class” they’ll likely to be bored.
• How will you draw a clear line between your personal and professional lives?
• If you have a personal Snapchat account, you might want to create a separate one for your classroom
(and have a separate set of rules for who you’ll follow, how you communicate and what kind of posts you share).
THANK YOU!
