Our top story today Oldham’s multi-cultural population has always faced challenging times and this
is even more marked in the current economic climate. People are facing difficult economic times
and the town itself is suffering seen in increases in vacant shop premises and an absence of spending
power in the town centre. We sent our specialist reporter Chelseah Aniceto to speak to Oldham
West and Royton’s local MP earlier today to ask what can help Oldham’s current economic situation.
CA – “I’m here at the constituency offices with MP Michael Meacher to find out his views on the
challenges faced in Oldham in this economic downturn. I asked him whether there are any signs of a
recovery in the town.

In other news, there’s been a bold attempt to bridge the racial divide in Oldham by merging two of
its most segregated schools. The riots over a decade ago revealed deep divisions between white and
Asian populations. Our reporter Chelseah Aniceto spoke to parents in the town about what they
think of the school merger whether they would send their children there.

And finally, Oldham athletic football club are now currently 13th in the league table. These results
could see them being close to challenging for a place in the championship but even getting into the

their views on whether the club has the drive to aim for the top.
