Abstract
This dissertation divides t he linguistic cult ure of bilingual et hnic
groups into t hree sub - systems, i . e . native linguistic cult ure,
bilingual cult ure and dialectal cult ure . The aut hor takes t he Daur
language— —the mother tongue of a minority group in nor thern
—
China, as a analytic sample to const ruct an explanatory pat tern of
linguistic cultural typology by making good use of historical data,
research findings concerned and data from field work , applying
met hodology of descriptive linguistics , con trastive linguistics and
cultural linguistics , brings the linguistic cultural system of bilingual
et hnic groups into t he primary and secondary cultural environmen t,
accoun ts for t he peculiarit y of linguistic culture , its ow n
systematization, diversity in type, the chaotic law of t he change of
linguistic culture, and attempts to find ou t t he met hod of adaptation
and reconstruction in t he changing process of linguistic culture of
bilingual et hnic groups .
The dissertation consists of ten chapters which can be briefly
divided into six parts .
Part I . ( chapter I ) : This part int roduces the purpose of
choosing of current topic, t he basic idea and framework of the
dissertation, t he academic value of choosing t he topic, w riting
principle and met hod , etc .
Part II ( chap ter II) : In t his part , t he au thor expounds his ow n
understanding of the cultural essence of language on t he basis of the
t heoretic frame and met hodology designed in t he int roduction par t .
This part can be divided in to t hree level . Firstly , linguistic culture
and its componen t system , the characteristics of each system and the

mut ual relationship among t hem : With linguistic culture and its
related concepts as a starting poin t, the author divides linguistic
culture in to t hree types or sub - systems , i . e . native linguistic
culture, dialectal culture and bilingual culture, expounds the
features and function of each sub - system . The aut hor believes that
native linguistic culture, referring to that of a ethnic group proper ,
possesses feat ures as conservativeness and stability ; bilingual
culture, referring to t he multicult ural pat tern formed in the course
of using two or more than two languages , contains t he feat ures of
dualit y and compatibilit y , dialectal culture, referring to a linguistic
system, wit h feat ures of a sub - culture formed on t he basis of
dialects in t he course of formation and developmen t of t he native
culture of each language, carries t he features of locality and
variability . Secondly , the source and course ( origin and
development ) of t he linguistic culture of t he Daur people: supported
by plen ty of findings and data concerned , the author expounds the
historical relationship between Qidan linguistic culture and t hat of
t he Daurs’. The aut hor elaborates t he main features of t he Daur
linguistic cult ure from the macro poin t of view, believes t hat the
native linguistic cult ure is t he main source of Daur linguistic cult ure,
it has run t hrough the w hole process of the historical development of
t he Daur people . From the middle of t he Qing Dynasty , appeared
t he Daur - Man bilingual cult ure and since the later part of t he Qing
Dynast y the Daur - Han bilingualism appeared , and dialectal culture
emerged on the basis of t his .
Part III ( chapter III , IV , V ) : Supported by t he basic t heory
of“ particular environment ” of culture and“ the homogeneity of
language and cult ure” the author believes t hat the system of Daur

linguistic culture reflects the productive mode of multi traditional
economy, social system of patrilineal family as its cen ter and the
system of idea characterized by concrete t hinking and polyt heist
belief . In this part , t he author uses historical data, vocabulary and
other collateral evidence to analyze t he basic features of t he Daur
native culture from the material, constitutional and psychological
levels respectively .
Part IV . ( chapter VI , V II) : In t his part , the author makes a
detailed analysis of t he bilingual culture formed in the process of
con tacting , intercommunicating and in teracting between t he Daur
linguistic culture and that of ot her ethnic groups in each historical
stage w hen t he Daur society changed its formation , including the
Daur and Man and the D - M bilingualism set up on the basis of the
relation in Qing Dynasty , the Daur - Han bilingual culture formed
since the later part of the Qing Dynasty and the Daur - Mongolian -
Han multilingual cult ure during t he Republic stage . The au thor
expounds t he met hodology and cultural character as a whole of
selection and adaptation , identification and borrowing, convergency
and reconstruction of the Daur people in t he course of bilingual
development .
Part V . ( chap ter VIII , IX ) : In this part , combining the
view points on t he dialectal division in linguistic field , t he au thor
divides the Daur language in to four dialects , i . e . Putt ha, Qiqihar ,
Hailar and Xingjiang , makes a detailed description and syn thetic
analysis of t he language variation and sub - cultural features of each
dialectal region , and its bilingual cult ure characterized by its
geographical features .
Part VI ( chapter X ) : This part is the summary of the

dissertation , t he au thor sums up the whole article in t hree levels .
Level I , analyzes and generalizes t he developing rules of Daur
linguistic culture by using chaotic principles . Level II , the au thor
summarizes t he historical development of Daur linguistic cult ure as
( i) st ressing the organic combination of family education and school
education , ( ii ) having a large number of excellent bilingual
speakers, ( iii ) having the advantage of compound bilingual
t hinking, etc . . Level III , summarizes the linguistic culture of Daur
as four developing tendencies: ( i ) native linguistic culture tends to
be weakened ; ( ii ) bilingual cult ure tends to be increasingly
widespread , ( iii ) dialectal cult ure tends to be individualized , ( iv)
non - native linguistic culture tends to develop more rapidly .
