1. The Sherpas of Nepal
A Sherpa climbing a mountain
1 People who live in big cities with many large offices
and apartments look at their windows and see towering
skyscrapers reaching high elevations. People who live
near a park or a forest see long tree trunks reaching up to
the sky. For the Sherpa people who live in the country of
Nepal, the view outside their window is the Himalaya
Mountains, including Mt. Everest. At 29,035 feet, it is the
tallest mountain in the world.
2 The people who grow up in Nepal learn how to climb
mountains almost as easily as they learn to walk. There
are no roads or cars there, and people get everywhere they
need to go by foot. They are excellent hikers and can carry
very heavy loads on their backs for long periods of time.
They have even been known to tote items as big as
televisions and refrigerators. Some kids have to be good at
climbing because the path to school takes them over 1,500
feet up the mountain. That is about the same as climbing
150 stories each way!
2. 3 It is no surprise that many of the Sherpas end up becoming
professional climbers. They work as guides to take visitors
up the mountains and back again. They know the slopes as
well as some people in cities know the fastest route to
drive from their homes to school or work. The Sherpas
just have to remember to wear thicker coats and warmer
boots!
