2. Valerie Adams/Vili
Valerie Kasinita Adams/Vili is a famous shot putter who was born on the 6th of October
1984, in Rotorua, New Zealand. Valerie was very tall for her age when she was younger, so
her friends thought she could take this to her advantage and try shot put, she did and was
very good. Tracy Lemon her coach, qualiïŹed her into the regional championships for shot
put. Valerie arrived and had two shots, both totaled 2m over the New Zealand world
record, set by Val Young and had stood for 20 years. Thats where her career started. In
2000, the Sydney Olympics were held, and also Valerieâs mum, Lilika Ngauamo was in
hospital dying of terminal cancer. The day of the ceremony of the Sydney olympics, Valerie
decided what she wanted to achieve in life- She wanted to be an olympian. The next day
after the ceremony, Lilika passed away and Valerie put all her grief and pain into her sport.
In all of Valerieâs achievements, she made it very clear that she achieved everything for her
mother. In 2005 Valerie got a bronze medal in the world championships and in 2007 won
gold in the world championships and became world champion. In the 2008 Beijing
olympics her ïŹrst throw was 19.73m. Her next throw, was 2cm more than her personal best.
She threw her hands up in the air with joy of breaking her personal best but little did she
know, that she had won the gold medal in Beijing Olympics! But in the 2012 olympics she
won silver before Nadzeya Ostapchuck, but found that Nadzeya had taken a banned
steroid. Soon after the IOC called Nadzeyaâs country to give back the medal, so it could be
given to Valerie. But that will still be in a couple of months.
I think VAlerie Adams has shown âJoy of EïŹortâ and âpursuit of Excellenceâ.
3. Nadzeya Ostapchuck
Nadzeya Ostapchuck is a famous shot putter who was born on the 28th of October 1980, in
Bolshiye Orly, Stolin Raion, Brest oblast in Belarus. Nadzeya was initially interested in basketball
but there were no local teams she could part of so she tried shot put. Her ïŹrst title came in 1998 at
the Junior World Championships, when she was 17. Nadzeya is a lot better at the younger levels of
shot put and won in the European Athletics Junior Championships in 1999. Her best shot put
throws are:
INDOOR: 21.70 M (2010)
OUTDOOR: 21.58M (2012)
In her ïŹrst Olympic games in Athens 2004 shecame fourth and had just missed a medal. But she
improved, and became the world champion in 2005. But unluckily, was beaten in 2007 by Valerie
Adams and Nadzeya came in second place. In 2008 olympics she came 3rd an received a bronze
medal. In the 2012 London olympics, she came 1st, but was later drug tested and had come out
positive and she was stripped of her gold medal. When Nadzeya got back to Belarus, she told
everyone that Valerie had come out positive, which is not true because Valerie Adams has never
failed a drug test in her life.
Nadzeya has not shown fair play because she took drugs and told all of Belarus that Valerie had
come out positive.
4. What is doping and how
does it effect fair play?
Doping is when athletes inject themselves or take drugs to make themselves faster
or stronger, so they can win a medal or be of the charts. People/athletes also inject
make their animals take drugs as well. But when athletes take these illegal/banned
drugs they are risking their lives. In the 1080s there were a few athletes who had
overdosed and had, had to many drugs in their system and his could lead to heart
failure or other symptoms.
Taking steroids eïŹects fair play by making it not fair, by enhancing your bodies
abilities and making it not fair for your opponents. It also can eïŹect other people
because someone else could of taken their place and could of had a chance of
winning a medal, or could of made a world record.
