7. Drag & drop makes it all so easy - calendaring
Quickly create a meeting invite to avoid reply-to-all emails
Take an email and drag it into your free time in the Day-At-A-Glance
sidebar panel
8. Drag & drop makes it all so easy - Feeds
Notes8.x offers a feed-reader in the sidebar
Take updates from internal/external sources
Local Notes database, so can be taken off-line
Great example is the
education feed from Lotus

Feeds can be pre-populated for users

9. Calendar subscriptions
Subscribe to a set of calendars and display them on your own calendar
• Another person’s Notes calendar
• TeamRoom calendar
• An application’s calendar
• Google calendar
• iCalendar feed
• To-do dates from Activities

11. Add private and public iCalendar feeds to your
Notes calendar
In Notes 8.5.2, when you add an iCal feed, you can make it "private, that is, one that
requires a login and a password.
Choose iCalendar feed
Click to choose a
private iCalendar
feed

13. So simple to set-up
Select "Display new (unprocessed) notices" in the Preferences dialog box
14. Since ND8 mail - means iNotes or Notes client
... From the same template
Regardless of whether it's Full, Lite or Ultra-Lite *
* the following screenshots show LotusLive Notes Web as an example of branding customisation – the underlying technology is browser access
to a Notes mail file – aka iNotes – (see hyperlinked words for links to documentation on LL Notes Web & iNotes)

Regardless of whether it's Full, Lite or Ultra-Lite

17. Replication and sync are now multi-threaded to
improve throughput and timeliness
http://preview.tinyurl.com/6lbv3hp
18. Speaking of replication – had you heard of
Managed Replicas?
Combines benefits of local mail replicas with lack of user intervention
User doesn't need to understand about replicas
Win-win as user sees better performance locally,
plus Domino server sees lower load
Policy driven deployment
All the user's operations occur locally
Updates, sending of mail, and receipt of new mail will happen as when the Notes
user uses a standard local replica with a local outgoing mailbox

19. Domino8.5.2 introduced extra fail-over options
for clustering to avoid interruptions
If the server goes down during any of the following activities, it will fail over to
another server automatically without interrupting your activity or showing you
error messages:
Creating a new email, calendar entry, or to do item
Opening a document in an application
Opening a different folder or view
Replying or forwarding with attachments
Creating a new document while multiple documents are selected (multiple
documents remain selected)
Sending a message
Switching back to the primary server when it becomes available
Deleting a single or multiple document.
20. Out of office – service versus agent
Since Notes & Domino 8 there's been an
alternative to the out-of-office agent
A service run by the router task
Needs to be switched on by the administrator
Allows instant response
Granular settings – e.g set it for a half-day
Or in advance of you heading out the office
Can automatically be disabled
• No more reminder emails
Supports clustered servers during fail-over

21. Domino 8 & 8.5 upgraded the database format
Domino R5 -- ODS 41
Domino R6 -- ODS 43
Domino R7 -- ODS 43
Domino R8 -- ODS 43
• This can be upgraded to ODS 48 for
Design Compression
Domino R8.5 ODS 43
• This can be upgraded to ODS 51 for
Domino Application Object Service (DAOS)
Don't assume your NSF databases have been upgraded to the latest On Disk
Structure (ODS)
The new database/design compression options are NOT applied to all your
databases by default during an upgrade (some exceptions apply*)
http://preview.tinyurl.com/69d55gs
22. Why upgrade to the latest Domino ODS?
Offers database and design compression options for all NSF databases
Document Compression can help reduce application sizes by 20% or higher *
Completely transparent to Lotus Notes® APIs
Attachments compressed separately
Significantly reduction of I/O
(* your mileage
may vary)
23. Storage Savings Examples
(Excludes DAOS, coming up next)
Internal Analysis of an IBM mail server
Applying Document Compression reduced storage from 162GB to 125GB
• saving of 22%
Customer analysis of one server
Starting disk storage: 116.9GB
After applying LZ1 and Design Compression: 113.2GB (3.2% savings)
After applying Data Compression: 87.3GB (25.3% additional savings)
24. Domino Attachment Object Service (DAOS)
Optional – but requires Domino8.5.x
Provides efficient, file-system storage of large objects
Automatically removes redundant storage of objects via efficient content
comparison
Results:
• Databases greatly reduced in size – in the region of 40 – 60%
• Substantial disk space savings
• I/O and bandwidth savings
Local replicas will simply contain the attachment(s)
File attachments tend to have extremely low usage
• Potential to move to slower, less expensive storage

29. Domino 8.5 – configuration tuner
Detect misconfigurations
• Mistaken settings
• Incorrectly published values
Detect performance and security issues
• Recommend best practice performance settings like “Don’t overwrite free space”
Reduce support costs
• Support can use DCT to provide initial assessment
• Administrators can perform self-assessment
Uses a Notes8.x client
• Can run against Domino7.x & higher
