Steve Klein wrote a guest post for The Buttry Diary with advice for a new adjunct journalism professor. These slides are part of that post. http://stevebuttry.wordpress.com

And that's what each student has to
figure out!
Just one thing!
9. The One Thing/Steve Klein
If you're familiar with the movie "City
Slickers" starring Billy Crystal and Jack Palance, you
may remember this bit of dialogue:
Jack Palance (Curley): "Do you know what the secret
of life is?"
Billy Crystal: "No, what?"
Palance: "One Thing, just one thing. You stick to that
and everything else doesn't mean sh*t!"
Crystal: "That's great, but what's the one thing?"
Palance: "That's what you've got to figure out."
10. The One Thing/Steve Klein
The ONE THING has been a
signature feature of my teaching
method and style at George Mason
University.
The idea comes from a short scene from the
1991 movie, "City Slickers.”

11. The One Thing/Steve Klein
For every class, I would hope
that each student would learn
at least ONE THING worth
remembering (OK, so
hopefully more!).
12. The One Thing/Steve Klein
Students keep track of the
ONE THING by posting
each comment in the
appropriate class
discussion folder.
13. The One Thing/Steve Klein
Each entry should be
cleanly written in AP Style
and reflect a specific point
from the previous class.
23. The One Thing/Steve Klein
I prefer Blackboard's discussion
forum because George Mason
University prefers that instructors
keep correspondence with students
within university platforms.
24. The One Thing/Steve Klein
But any discussion forum will do.
For example, you could create a
Google+ circle for every class, or a
wiki, a Facebook page or a Twitter
hashtag.
25. The One Thing/Steve Klein
If a student misses class for a
legitimate reason, they still monitor
the discussion and can make a
comment for credit.
26. The One Thing/Steve Klein
I can learn almost as much
about a student's writing
from a short comment as I
can from a full story
assignment.
27. The One Thing/Steve Klein
The exercise provides
students with consistent
feedback and
reinforcement throughout
the semester.
28. The One Thing/Steve Klein
And the exercise provides
the instructor with
feedback on what the
students are hearing.
29. The One Thing/Steve Klein
Given that students rarely
take notes these
days, THE ONE THING
provides students with an
exercise that helps
reinforce learning.
----- Meeting Notes (9/17/11 07:44) -----This is Curley from "City Slickers." He tells Billy Crystal about "the one thing" in the movie. Jack Palance won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in the 1991 film.
----- Meeting Notes (9/17/11 07:44) -----The YouTube video behind this slide is 33 seconds long.
----- Meeting Notes (9/17/11 07:44) -----These are the basic instructions I give to each class using THE ONE THING.

----- Meeting Notes (9/17/11 07:44) -----I use Blackboard, but you can use any number of platforms, from Twitter to Google+, Facebook or a wiki. This is the directory from one set of class entry.
----- Meeting Notes (9/17/11 07:44) -----Here's a message thread with one student.
----- Meeting Notes (9/17/11 07:44) -----While I discourage missing class, of course, this is a great way for a student who does miss class to get a sense of what she or he missed.I also encourage students to have at least one "class buddy."
