Collect of the Day: Eternal God, who caused all
holy scriptures to be written for our learning,
grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and
inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and
ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting
life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus
Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Today we remember those who have gone before us.
All:
Today we honour the memory of those who
have
given their lives.
Today we give thanks for all those who
remained
steadfast in adversity.
3. All:
Today we pray we might be faithful to their
witness.

Hymn 660 “God Save the Queen”
A Moment of Silence
Lest We Forget
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
All:
We shall remember them.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF RUTH 3:1–5, 4:13–17
Read by Winston Dottin
1Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter,
I need to seek some security for you, so that it may
be well with you. 2Now here is our kinsman Boaz,
with whose young women you have been working.
See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing
floor. 3Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on
your best clothes and go down to the threshing
floor; but do not make yourself known to the man
until he has finished eating and drinking. 4When he
lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go
and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell
4. you what to do.” 5She said to her, “All that you tell
me I will do.” 13So Boaz took Ruth and she became
his wife. When they came
together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore
a son. 14Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be
the Lord, who has not left you this day without next-
of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel!
15He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher
of your old age; for your daughter-in-law who loves
you, who is more to you than seven sons, has borne
him.” 16Then Naomi took the child and laid him in
her bosom, and became his nurse. 17The women of
the neighbourhood gave him a name, saying, “A son
has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed; he
became the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 127 (Tone II.1)
Unless the LORD builds the house, *
their labor is in vain who build it.
Unless the LORD watches over the city, *
in vain the watchman keeps his vigil.
It is in vain that you rise so early and go to bed so late; *
vain too to eat the bread of toil / for he gives to his beloved
sleep.
Children are a heritage from the LORD, *
and the fruit of the womb is a gift.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior *
are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them! *
he shall not be put to shame when he contends with his
enemies in the gate.
5. Glory be to the Father and to the Son:
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be:
world without end Amen.
A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS 9:24–
28 Read by Joyce Connell
24For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by
human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he
entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the
presence of God on our behalf. 25Nor was it to offer
himself again and again, as the high priest enters
the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not
his own; 26for then he would have had to suffer again
and again since the foundation of the world. But as
it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the
age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27And
just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and
after that the judgement, 28so Christ, having been
offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a
second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those
who are eagerly waiting for him.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People:
Thanks be to God.

Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
6. according to Mark 12: 38-44..
All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.
38As Jesus taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes,
who like to walk around in long robes, and to be
greeted with respect in the
marketplaces, 39and to have the best seats in the
synagogues and places of honour at banquets!
40They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of
appearance say long prayers. They will receive the
greater condemnation.” 41He sat down opposite the
treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into
the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42A
poor widow came and put in two small copper coins,
which are worth a penny. 43Then he called his
disciples and said to them, “Truly
I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all
those who are contributing to the treasury. 44For all
of them have contributed out of their abundance;
but she out of her poverty has put in everything she
had, all she had to live on.”
The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.
Homily
Anthem: “Greater Love hath no man” – John Ireland
Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it.
Love is strong as death.
Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
That we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness.
Ye are washed, ye are sanctified,
ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation;
7. That ye should show forth the praises of him
who hath call'd you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
I beseech you brethren, by the mercies of God,
that you present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto to God, which is your reasonable service.

Final Hymn “And can it be that I should gain”
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
’Tis mystery all: th’Immortal dies:
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;
Let angel minds inquire no more.
9. He left His Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For O my God, it found out me!
No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Music Notes:
John Ireland was born near Manchester, England in 1879. He
entered the newly established Royal College of Music in
London at the age of 14, lost both his parents shortly after, and
had to make his own way as an orphaned teenager, studying
piano, organ and composition. The last was under Sir Charles
Stanford, who taught many of the English composers who
emerged at the end of the 19th century, including Ralph
Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Herbert Howells and a host of
others. Ireland emerged as a celebrated composer towards the
end of World War I when his Violin Sonata No.2 brought him
overnight fame. From then until his death in 1962 he led an
outwardly uneventful life combining composition, composition
teaching at the Royal College (where his pupils included
11. Benjamin Britten and E.J. Moeran), and his position as organist
and choirmaster at St. Luke's Church, Chelsea, in London. He
composed a great deal of music, although not a lot for the
church. Ireland is known throughout the English-speaking
world for his music to the hymn “My song is love unknown”,
and is justly famous for “Greater love”, this morning’s anthem,
which he wrote in 1912. Both “Sursum corda” (the prelude)
and “Alla marcia” (the postlude) were composed a year earlier.
This afternoon at 4 o'clock the choir and lead singers, along
with piper Rob Crabtree, present an hommage to those who did
not return from either of the Great Wars, and to our veterans.
The programme is a mix of sacred and secular music, including
some sing-along pieces for the audience. Please join for us
"Remembering", and bring your friends and family members.
Tickets will be available from choir members after this
morning's service at $8 (free for children under 16) .... they will
be $10 at the door. Proceeds from this concert will be
contributed to the Organ Restoration Fund.
