People always seemed to choose America, but
WHY? The reason people usually choose America
is because America had wide-open space where
land was still available. Work was plentiful and
more workers were needed. One of the most
attractive things about America was it’s freedom.

The year that the potato blight started was 1845
in Ireland. The potato blight was when all the
potatoes turned into dark, slimy mush. Their
rotten stench rose from the ground. Many people
died from a potato disease.
In the period from 1880~1930, many people
moved to America. The people that moved to

6. Problems For People

The places that the people who moved to America

To become a citizen, you have to do certain things. You have to
have either a relative that is a citizen of United States or an
employer in the U.S that will sponsor you. The relative must ïŹle
an immigrant visa petition with the Bureau of Citizenship and
immigrant services (BCIS). You must provide ïŹngerprints and
prove their relationship to a U.S citizen. If the application is
approved, you ïŹnally receive a permanent resident card, often
called a green card.
