  1. Say, “today we are going to learn about idioms. We have all heard popular expressions that have been around for many years. Can anyone tell me what an idiom is?” Wait for any answers from the class and discuss.
  2. The slide displays the text and graphic. Ask a student to aloud the definition from the slide.
  3. The slide change and show the text and graphic. The bullets will come in separately. Say, “You will determine the meaning of the idioms by using context clues. The idiom will be shown in a bold font. “
  4. The slide changes and displays the text and animation. Say, “Here is an example of a commonly used idiom in context. You sure do like to paddle your own canoe, Stephen.
  5. The slide changes showing the text and graphic at once. Stay, “The correct meaning of the idiom means if you paddle your own canoe, you do things for yourself without outside help. This can mean doing anything by yourself, not just literally paddling your own canoe.”
  6. The slide changes with a sound effect and displays the word art and graphic. The bulleted text will come in separately. Say, “Now it is your turn to determine the meaning of the idioms by using context clues.” I will then have a student read the sentence from the slide.
  7. The slide changes and displays the word art and text. The bullets will come in separately. I will read off the bullets individually and ask if anyone knows the answer to this question, and then the class will discuss.
  8. The slide changes with a sound effect. The text and graphic appear followed by the bottom row of text. I will say “Great Job class!” I would then divide the students into four groups. I will then click the action button to go over the definition of the idiom again. I will then bring them back to this slide. I will have each group come up with an idiom with which they are familiar. I would have one representative from the first group come and write their chosen idiom on the board in front of the class. I would lead a discussion explaining why or why not it was correctly chosen, and what it means.
  9. I will click to this slide to display the text, graphic and hyperlink. Then I would then click on the hyperlink to start the SmartBoard activity and let the students compete with one another.
