Government Under the Republic Monarchy In place of a king, Rome had 2  consuls  who commanded the army and directed government. They served a one year term and could not be re-elected for 10 years.  The consuls could overrule one another so they must agree. Aristocracy Senate  made of 300 members chosen from the upper-class (of course). Senators had legislative and administrative duties and served for life.  Democracy Assemblies-all citizen soldiers were members.  They made laws for the common people.  Dictatorship In times of crisis, the republic could appoint a  dictator , one with absolute power to make laws and command an army. Chosen by consuls and elected by the senate.
