A few Beginning Concepts

    Interdependence and
     Social Organizations
Sources used to study History

Primary Source:
Are materials that were produced during the
historical period or very close to the period
being studied.
Secondary Source
  Are interpretations of Historical Events
written by historians later in time.

Task:
In your notebook list as many examples
as you can think of for both Primary
And secondary sources
Types of Primary sources
Legal Documents: Laws, Wills, Deeds, Bills

Personal Documents: Journals, Diaries, Letters

Contemporary Accounts: Newspapers, interview,
artifacts

Electronic Documents: texts, tweets, email
Secondary sources
Books: Encyclopedia

                      Textbooks
Next Historians Analyze

                                                    Ask
                                                  Questions

Who? Where? What? When? How? Why?

                                                                                          How was it
What was it What does it When was it Why was it
Who made it? Who used it? Where was it? made or
used for? say or mean? made/ used? made?
                                                                                            used?
How to evaluate a source?
• What date was it written in?

• What type of source is it?

• How did the source come into existence
  – Who created the source? (social position)
  – Do they have a vested interest?
• Is the author in a position in society to provide
reliable information on a particular topic?
  (Credentials)

• What does the document mean to contemporaries-
  could the document be misinterpreted?
Inference
• An inference is an educated guess based on
  the information you have collected

• Make a chart in your book:
Activity you One object Was that Was the
did this you used to object made object made
morning complete by yourself by others?
                     that activity
Interdependence
• Humans live in groups in society because they
can best meet their needs and wants by
working with other members of society.

                   Another Example
Bread
Farmers Harvest the Wheat

Wheat sent to the mill to
                                                  be turned into flour

Baker bakes the
Bread

                                             Consumer buys bread from store
            Truck delivers bread to stores
Your Task
Complete the interdependence assignment
about paper is made by placing the number of
different tasks involved in making paper in order.
Social Organizations
• Since humans live in groups and must interact
with others within the society, we set up
systems called social organizations to help us
better meet our needs and wants by providing
order and establishing rules to regulate
  human behaviour.
Types of Organizations
            and their purpose
Specific Social Organizations in our society have
different purposes.
They are essential because we need groups that
hold more power in society to:
• Help maintain peace
• Make decisions
• Create a meaning and purpose to life
• Organize people into an orderly society.
Family
To provide for needs of adults and
children.

Families contribute to
keeping our population
growing.
Education
To transmit culture from one
generation to another and to aid in the
socialization process.
Political Organization

To meet the needs of making
    collective decisions
Economic Organizations
To produce and distribute goods and services
Religious or Cultural Organizations
To create a sense of
meaning or purpose for
life.

To provide civilization
with rules to build morals
and establish laws.
Your Task
Complete the assignment analyzing social organizations
Analysis Questions Organization 1: Organization 2:
                                                           Education Family
                                .
           Needs met by this organization.
           (What is the organizations purpose?)

           Demands made by this social
           organization. (What role does this
           organization play in helping society
           establish order by implementing rules?)

Sanctions used by this Positive Negative Positive Negative

           Organization (if deemed necessary)
Consequences of actions both positive and
           negative)

           Amount of conformity
           demanded?
(How do you change your behaviour to fit
           in?)

           Is the membership worth the
return? Explain. (Is it worth it?)
