This is a PPT that I used with our two high schools to generate some awareness of the differences that make up today's student. I utilized information from Karl Fisch's "Did You Know?" presentation. The PPT made a huge impact. I also wanted to highlight some of the resources available to my teachers.

20. There are over 60 million registered users of MySpace. There are an additional 21 million visitors per year (2007).

21. The average MySpace page is visited 30 times a day.

22. There are over 2.7 billion searches performed on Google each month.

23. To whom were these questions addressed B.G. ( Before Google )?

24. The number of text messages sent and received every day exceeds the population of the planet.

25. There are over 500,000 words in the English language.

26. That’s about 5 times as many as during Shakespeare’s time.

27. More than 3,000 new books are published . . .

28. … daily.

29. It’s estimated that a week’s worth of New York Times . . .

30. … contains more information than a person was likely to come across in a lifetime in the 18 th century.

31. It’s estimated that 1.5 exabytes (that’s 1.5 x 10 18 ) of unique new information will be generated worldwide this year.

32. That’s estimated to be more than the entire sum of the previous 5,000 years.

33. The amount of new technical information is doubling every 2 years.

34. That means for a student starting a four-year technical or college degree . . .

35. … half of what they learn in their first year of study will be outdated by their third year of study.

36. It’s predicted to double every 72 hours by 2010.

37. Third generation fiber optics is presently being tested by telecommunications companies. . .

38. … that pushes 10 trillion bits per second down one strand of fiber.

39. That’s 1,900 CDs or 150 million simultaneous phone calls every second.

40. It’s currently tripling about every 6 months and is expected to do so for at least the next 20 years.

41. Predictions are that e-paper will be cheaper than real paper.

42. 47 million laptops were shipped worldwide last year.

43. The $100 laptop project is expecting to ship between 50 and 100 million laptops a year to children in underdeveloped or emerging countries.

44. Predictions are that by 2013 a supercomputer ($$$) will be built that exceeds the computation capability of the human brain.

45. By 2025, a $1,000 computer will exceed the capabilities of the Human Brain.

46. First graders will be just 23 years old and beginning their (first) careers.

47. And while technical predictions farther out than about 15 years are hard to do . . .

48. … predictions are that by 2049 a $1,000 computer will exceed the computational capabilities of the ENTIRE HUMAN RACE.

49. So what does this all mean for us?

50. It means that it is obvious that technology needs to be a tool to help us meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s students.
