In 1922, a British archaeologistnamed
Howard Carter found a ancienttomb in
Egypt. A tombisanothernamefor a grave.
In ancientEgypt,
manytombswerebuiltlikehouses,
withdriedclaybrick and stone.
Anybodycouldbuild a tombforthemselves
and theirfamily.
Long beforetheydied, theancientEgyptiansbeganmakingitemsto place
insidetheirtomb. Theseitemswerecalled grave goods.
Peoplelovedmaking grave goods. Itwas a familyactivity. Theymade grave
goodstheirwholelife. Theymadedolls and baskets and jewelry and
littlestatues of workers and allkinds of things.
Then, as a familyouting, theywouldvisittheirtomb, and place the grave
goodstheyhadmadelockedsafelyinside.
Thenext time theyvisitedtheirtomb,
theywouldbring more grave goods. Bythe time
theydied, theirtombwas full of
wonderfulmemories of theirlife in Egypt,

robbersfaced horrible deathsiftheywerecaught. Still, thethought of

Tombswereplunderedforcenturies.
Oneday, in 1922, duringtheRoaringTwenties, anarchaeologistnamed
Howard Carter wasworking in Egypt. He found a reallysmalltomb. He
didn'tthinkmuchaboutitbecauseitwas so small. He figureditwasthetomb of
a commoner. You can imagine hisexcitementwhen he openedthedoor and
realized he hadfoundthetomb of anancientEgyptianpharaoh, a tomb so
smallthatithadbeenoverlookedforthousands of years!
Fromthehieroglyphicwritingonthewalls, Howard Carter
knewwhowasburied in thetomb. Itwas a youngpharaohnamed King
Tunkhannock, King Tutfor short. Today, weknowwhat King
Tutlookedlikebecause Howard Carter found a
solidgoldmaskinsidethetomb, designedlikethepharaoh'sface.
King Tutwasonlynineyearsoldwhen he became Pharaoh. He wasonly 18
yearsoldwhen he died. King
