itwasloadedwithtreasure. Every time a new pharaohcametopower,
workstartedimmediatelyonbuildingtheirtomb.

As modernarchaeologistsopenedthetombs of theancientpharaohs,
theyfoundthatmany of themhadbeenrobbed and theirtreasures removed.
In ancientEgypt, theworsecrime of allwas grave robbing. Grave
robbersfaced horrible deathsiftheywerecaught. Still, thethought of
allthattreasureoverrodetheirfear of beingcaught.
Tombswereplunderedforcenturies.

Oneday, in 1922, duringtheRoaringTwenties, anarchaeologistnamed
Howard Carter wasworking in Egypt. He found a reallysmalltomb. He
didn'tthinkmuchaboutitbecauseitwas so small. He figureditwasthetomb of
a commoner. You can imagine hisexcitementwhen he openedthedoor and
realized he hadfoundthetomb of anancientEgyptianpharaoh, a tomb so
smallthatithadbeenoverlookedforthousands of years!

Fromthehieroglyphicwritingonthewalls, Howard Carter
knewwhowasburied in thetomb. Itwas a youngpharaohnamed King
Tunkhannock, King Tutfor short. Today, weknowwhat King
Tutlookedlikebecause Howard Carter found a
solidgoldmaskinsidethetomb, designedlikethepharaoh'sface.

King Tutwasonlynineyearsoldwhen he became Pharaoh. He wasonly 18
yearsoldwhen he died. King
Tut'stombwasverysmallcomparedtothetombs of
otherpharaohsbecausethepeopledidnothave a lot of time tobuildit.

Somearchaeologiststhink grave robbersmighthavebroken in because a
bag of goldringswasfoundonthefloor, as ifdropped in haste.
Othersthinkthatperhapsthe bag simplyfell,
perhapswhentheancientEgyptianssealedthetomb.
Ifrobbersdidfindtheirwayinside, theycertainlydidnottakeeverything.
Howard Carter and histeamfoundmanytreasuresinsidethetomb.
Itwasalmostlikeentering a time machine.

Theartifacts in Tut'stombtoldarchaeologists and scientists a
greatdealaboutancientEgyptiandailylife.

Thediscovery of a tomb full of treasurestirredtheimagination of
peopleallovertheworld. Manypeople became interested in learning more
aboutancientEgypt and otherancientcivilizationsbecause of Howard
Carter'sincrediblediscovery - King Tut'sTomb.
