The event was opened by the Assistant Secretary General for Scientific & Tech-
nological Affairs on behalf of the Secretary General of the Higher Council for
Science and Technology Dr. Khaled Elshuraydeh. EU- JordanNet II Coordina-
tor / SRTD II PIO Director Eng. Omar Amawi, the European Commission
DG Research and Innovation representative Ms. Heba Gaber EC/TBC partici-
pated and attended the event.
European and Mediterranean experts working in bilateral projects in the region
were invited to the event to give Jordanian researchers the chance to establish
new partnerships and develop joint strategic agendas for research, development
and innovation. In addition; the Support to research Technological Develop-
ment & Innovation in Jordan Project (SRTD II) took the opportunity to lunch

search and Innovation programme ever with
nearly €80 billion of funding available over seven
years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private
investment that this money will attract. It promis-
es more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-
firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the
market.
The first day mainly focused around the objec-
tives and the achievements of the project, EU-
MED Cooperation, opportunities and Challenges
and EU-MED activities, while the second day dis-
cussed H2020 theoretically and practically.
Grants’ Monitoring and Evaluation ( First Stage )
The implementation of 62 grants was lunched
at the beginning of July 2015 for both applied
research and commercialization. Two calls
were lunched; one in September 2014 and the
second in December 2014. Since June 2015 a
total of 43 applied research and 19 commer-
cialization grants were lunched under SRTD
II. The implementation period for these
grants varies from 8 to 18 months. A moni-
toring and evaluation plan has been put in
place by SRTD-II to assist the beneficiaries
with the implementation of their grants.

of technology transfer officers available
to assist them in their commercialization
activities.

The objectives of monitoring these grants are,
To help beneficiaries achieve their goals
according to EU rules and regulations.
To encourage those with applied research-
es to reach the maximum outcomes of
their studies, and to look for potential
commercialization opportunities.

SRTD-II, represented by its director and the key area coordinators for Water & Energy partici-
pated in the 3rd EMEG meeting organized from 30 September to 2 October 2015 by The Medi-
terranean Science, Policy, Research & Innovation Gateway (MED-SPRING) project in Malta,
hosted by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST), in collaboration with the In-
ternational Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies- Bari (CIHEAM-IAMB)
and Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research - Egypt ( MHESR). The event fo-
cused on the development of "A frame for a comprehensive understanding of water-food-energy
nexus".
The 3rd EMEG meeting, intends to develop a Nexus approach as a new framing for the interde-
pendence of water, energy and food (the societal challenges addressed by MedSpring) and,
through a better understanding of the synergies and trade-offs among them, identify the factors
research should take into consideration to ensure that demand is met without compromising sus-
tainability requirements.

5. SRTD-II project represented by its Food Key Area Coordinator has participated in EFSA
Expo2015, the Universal Exhibition that Milan, Italy, had hosted from May 1 to October 31,
2015. Over six-month period, Milan became a global showcase where more than 140
participating countries showed the best of their technology that offers a concrete answer to a
vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while

respecting the Planet and its
e q u i l i b r i u m .
The site hosted four thematic
areas, ranged from Pavilion Zero,
which traces the history of
humankind via its relationship
with food, to the Future Food
District, which explains how
technology will change food
storage, distribution, purchase, and consumption. Then there were the areas of the Children’s
Park, where the young folk can learn about the themes while having fun, and the Biodiversity
Park, a large garden in which a number of our planet’s ecosystems are reproduced. In
addition to the exhibitor nations, the Expo also involved international organizations, and
expects to welcome over 20 million visitors to its 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area.
Expo Milano 2015 was not only a showcase of the best technologies for a sustainable future,
but a global, interactive event with thousands of cultural offerings both within and outside the
exhibition site. Shows, concerts, conferences, cooking demonstrations, workshops and
exhibitions transformed Expo Milano 2015 into an occasion for reflection as well as
enjoyment.
