1. Harriet Tubman
Born into slavery, she
experienced cruelty from her
owners and always wanted
freedom.
2. Born in Slavery
Harriet was born in Dorchester county, Maryland
sometime between 1808 and 1825.
3. Escaping From Slavery
In 1849 Harriet
sought her own
freedom. In 1850,
she helped her first
slaves escape.
These were
members of her
family.
4. A Brave Woman
Harriet was a conductor of the underground
railroad. During the Civil War, she was a Union
scout and spy who was also sought after to teach
stealth and organization to the Union army.
5. The Famous Conductor
She was the most famous
conductor on the Underground
Railroad. This wasn’t a real
railroad, but a secret route of
people and places to lead slaves
into Canada. A conductor was
someone who led the slaves on
their journey. Her nickname was
Moses and she never lost a
passenger
6. Denying Slavery
Harriet didn’t believe in slavery and wanted to help
other slaves become free. As a conductor, she
sometimes had to be forceful with those she was
leading to freedom, because they would be
scared.
7. Freedom and Hard Work
During her time on the
Underground Railroad,
she led thousands of
people to freedom.
Because of her amazing
work, she is a true
American hero.
