1. Medical Abortion
As the name suggests, medical abortions do not involve surgery or other invasive methods but
rely on medications to end pregnancy. A medical abortion involves taking the drug mifepristone;
often called 'the abortion pill,' its generic name is RU-486 and its brand name is Mifeprex
Mifepristone is not available over the counter and must be provided by a health care
professional. A woman seeking a medical abortion can obtain one through a doctor's office or
clinic and should expect two or more visits to complete the process, as another drug, misoprostol,
must be taken to terminate the pregnancy.
Mifepristone is prescribed in the first trimester and is FDA-approved for use up to 49 days (7
weeks) after a woman's last period. Although considered off label (not FDA-approved), some
providers may opt to use it up to 63 days (9 weeks) after the first day of a woman's last period,
although its effectiveness is diminished after 7 weeks. In 2005, medical abortions made up 13%

empties the fetus from the uterus by causing the uterus to contract and push the fetus out.

2. HOW THE PILL WORKS
Mifepristone blocks the effects of progesterone, a hormone necessary to sustain pregnancy.
Without progesterone, the fertilized egg detaches from the uterine wall, the cervix softens and
opens and the uterine lining begins to break down. Two days after taking it, women are given the
drug misoprostol, an anti-ulcer drug that is also known by the brand name Cytotec. In small
doses, misoprostol causes contractions in the uterus, helping to expel the embryo. Women
typically remain in a doctor's office or clinic office up to four hours after taking misoprostol.
Most are then released to go home.

3. How does the medical abortion work?

Step One: Mifeprex blocks the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone the lining of the

Step Two: Misoprostol makes the uterus contract and empty causing a miscarriage.
How long does it take?
Some women (2-5%) may begin to bleed after using the Mifeprex in the office. Even so you
must use Misoprostol as instructed. Most women will bleed and pass the pregnancy within
several hours of inserting the Misoprostol at home.
How effective is it?
Medical abortion is approximately 95% effective. Mifeprex and Misoprostol will cause serious
birth defects to this pregnancy. Approximately three weeks later: You must return to the office to
confirm that the abortion is complete.
How does it feel?
You may experience some or all of the following:

• nausea or vomiting
• diarrhea

4. Will I need a follow-up?

What if I don't have a complete abortion after taking the
medicine?
Your Physician will decide what option is best for you. You may:
• Take more misoprostol
When will I get my period?
You should expect your next menstrual cycle four to eight weeks after your miscarriage. If you
start birth control pills you will know exactly when your period will begin.
When can I have sex again?
You should not have vaginal intercourse until you are cleared by the Physician at your follow-up
visit. You could get pregnant right away after the miscarriage.
