1. SOUND
Diegetic sound that is within the story i.e.
birds chirping
Non-diegetic sound is that comes from
outside the story. I.E. soundtrack or
score.
Synchronous is the match of sound with
image in projection. I.E. dialogue linked
up with lip movement.
Asynchronous sound is out-of-sync not
linking up with action, so lip sync would
not link with sound.
Sound effects are rarely noticeable, they
supply an overall sense of a realistic
environment. Some filmmakers shift the
weight in some sound effects to achieve
a certain effect or to direct a viewers
attention.
Sound motifs are often created through
music and are repeated in a significant
way (jaws sound). As sound motifs
change the filmmaker can subtly
compare scenes, trace patterns of
development and suggest implicit
meanings. This could be a
representation of a certain character or
a theme attribute.
Sound bridge at the beginning of one
scene the sound from the previous
scene carries over briefly before the
sound from the new scene begins. OR
At the end of one scene, the sound from
the next scene is heard, leading into
that scene.
Dialogue is the words that are spoken by

2. character, it is essentially the talking
involved within the film or television
show.
Voice over refers to a production technique where a non-
diegetic voice is broadcast live or pre-recorded in radio,
television, film, theatre and/or presentation.[1] The
voice-over may be spoken by someone who also appears
on-screen in other segments or it may be performed by a
specialist voice actor. Voice-over is also commonly
referred to as "off camera" commentary.
Mode of address is how a film or television
show speaks to the audience. How the
addresser and the addressee are being
constructed
Direct address is when a character directly
addresses the audience. I.e. saved by
the bell when Zach looks at the camera
and tells us his thoughts.
Sound mixing is the combination of two
or more sound tracks by recording them
onto a single one. The most common
example of this talking while there is
music playing.
Sound perspective is the sense of a sound’s
position in space, yielded by volume,
timbre, pitch, and, in stereophonic
reproduction systems. This gives the
viewer a sense of space as shown
visually is demonstrated through sound.
SOUNDTRACK
Score is a broad term referring to the music in a film,
which is generally categorically separated from songs
used within a film.
Incidental music is often background music
composed to create atmosphere and heighten emotional
impact.

3. Theme is the material, usually a recognizable melody,
upon which part or all of a composition is based. It may
be perceivable as a complete musical expression in itself,
separate from the work in which it is found. Any
element, motif, or small musical piece that has given rise
to some variation becomes thereby a theme.
Stings is a short musical phrase, primarily used in
television shows and films as a form of punctuation—for
example at the end of a scene, or as a dramatic climax is
imminent.
Ambient sound or ambient audio means the
background sounds that are present in
a scene or location. Common ambient
sounds include wind, water, birds,
crowds, office noises, traffic, etc.
Functions: Providing audio continuity
between shots; preventing an unnatural
silence when no other sound is present;
establishing or reinforcing the mood.
