BRITAIN’S INFLUENCE ON INDIA
THE HISTORY

                  The British Empire in
              
                  India was also called
                  the British “Raj”.

                  The Raj lasted from
              
                  1858 to 1947

                  The East India
              
                  Company lost control in
                  1858 after a century
THE RAJ

When the Raj was formed in 1858 the British

fought in what was called the Great Rebellion

This lasted nearly two years and cost the

    British £36 million.

Raj means in Hindi “to rule” or “kingdom”

THE PARTITION (I.E. THE END OF THE EMPIRE)

                          Pakistan was made in
                      
                          order to be a Muslim
                          country.

                          India chose to be a
                      
                          Secular country
THE INFLUENCE
ARCHITECTURE AND RAILWAYS
THE RAILWAYS OF INDIA
ARCHITECTURE
THE MINISTRIES’ OFFICES
ARCHITECTURE
THE VICTORIA MEMORIAL
THE INFLUENCE
LEGAL SYSTEM

The Indians have been following the British

    Legal System

This makes it easier to do business with

    International industries

This is because a lot of countries understand

and use the British Legal System
THE INFLUENCE
INDIAN SPORT (CRICKET)

    Cricket was introduced

    to the Indians via the
    British while the
    empire still stood

    Now cricket is the main

    sport in India with the
    national team being
    arguably the best in
    the world.
THE INFLUENCE
POVERTY
It took a long time for the

Indians to come out of poverty
    (they still are in poverty)

    This was because of the

    License Raj, which meant that
    permission was needed for
    certain law changes

    The British looted many natural

    resources including cotton and
    wool

A very notable jewel taken from

the Indians was the jewel in the
    Imperial Crown Of India
THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The two official languages in India are Hindi

  and English
 English is one of the business languages of
the world and therefore makes trading much
  easier.
 80% of the Indian population will know how
  to speak English
 It is the language taught in schools in India
