R is more than just a language. Many of the reasons why R has become such a popular tool for data science come from the ecosystem surrounding the R project. R users benefit from the many resources and packages created by the community, while commercial companies (including Microsoft) provide tools to extend and support R, and services to help people use R. In this talk, I will give an overview of the R Ecosystem and describe how it has been a critical component of R’s success, and include several examples of Microsoft’s contributions to the ecosystem. (Presented to EARL London, September 2016)

Presented at #SALAD2015 The heterogeneity of methods and technologies to publish open data is still an issue to develop distributed systems on the Web. On the one hand, Web APIs, the most popular approach to offer data services, implement REST principles, which focus on addressing loose coupling and interoperability issues. On the other hand, Linked Data, available through SPARQL endpoints, focus on data integration between distributed data sources. We proposes BASIL, an approach to build Web APIs on top of SPARQL endpoints, in order to benefit of the advantages from both Web APIs and Linked Data approaches. Compared to similar solution, BASIL aims on minimising the learning curve for users to promote its adoption. The main feature of BASIL is a simple API that does not introduce new specifications, formalisms and technologies for users that belong to both Web APIs and Linked Data communities.

As we learn, a concept-map or a node-link diagram can enhance the learning ability of learners from beginner to advanced user level, so RDF graph visualization can be a suitable tool for making users be familiar with Semantic technology. However, an RDF graph generated from the whole query result is not suitable for reading, because it is highly connected like a hairball and less organized. To make a graph presenting knowledge be more proper to read, this research introduces an approach to sparsify a graph using the combination of three main functions: graph simplification, triple ranking, and property selection. These functions are mostly initiated based on the interpretation of RDF data as knowledge units together with statistical analysis in order to deliver an easily-readable graph to users. A prototype is implemented to demonstrate the suitability and feasibility of the approach. It shows that the simple and flexible graph visualization is easy to read, and it creates the impression of users. In addition, the attractive tool helps to inspire users to realize the advantageous role of linked data in knowledge management.
