o Also responsible for conducting visits of various delegations from foreign countries which are
predominantly Infantry oriented
General Officer Commanding 15 Infantry Division (Oct 2007 to Jan 2009)
o Was responsible for the operational and administrative functioning of five operational
Brigades of approximately 15,000 troops deployed on the Indo Pakistan border
3. Brigadier Operational Logistics, HQ Western Command (Feb 2007 to Sep 2007)
o Was responsible for maintaining the operational and administrative efficiency of all units of
Western Command, over 3,00,000 troops
Sub Area Commander Mumbai (Jan 2005 to Dec 2005)
o Was responsible for the operational preparedness and administration of all small and large
military establishments in the entire state of Maharashtra
o Responsibilities included Manpower Planning, Procurement, Budget Management & Training
of personnel and also providing aid to civil administration for law and order and during
natural calamities necessitating close and intimate coordination with the Indian Navy and
the State Government authorities
o Conducting of VVIP visits was also an important function of this appointment
Brigade Commander, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh (Jun 2003 to Dec 2004)
o Was responsible for the operational preparedness and administration of more than 3,500
troops and maintaining the sanctity of the disputed boundary with China
o It called for high level of diplomatic ability when dealing with the Chinese military authorities
during the regular border meetings, and constant monitoring of the health and welfare of
soldiers and animals operating at sub zero temperatures
Commanding Officer 9 Rashtriya Rifles (May 1994 to Apr 1997)
o Was handpicked by the Chief of Army Staff to raise a Rashtriya Rifles Battalion to tackle the
growing insurgency problem in the country
o It entailed grouping, organising and training troops from different units into a homogeneous
one and leading them in active counter insurgency operations
o I have the unique distinction in the Indian Army of being the only commanding officer till
date to have raised a Battalion and received the Chief of Army Staff’s Unit Citation during
my command tenure!
o The Battalion continues to be one of the finest Rashtriya Rifles Battalion till date having been
awarded 3 COAS Unit Citations, 3 Army Commanders Unit Citations, one Governors Units
Citation, the COAS Silver Trophy and over 200 gallantry awards!
Deputation with Home Ministry
Inspector General Training , National Security Guard, Manesar (Dec 2010 till date)
o As Inspector General Training I am responsible for training of NSG personnel on deputation
from the Indian Army and Central Para Military Forces on Counter Terrorist operations, and
non NSG personnel from the State Police Forces to tackle the ever increasing Left Wing
Extremist threat in the country
National Security Guard, Manesar (May 1985 to Dec 1987)
o Was one of the pioneers during the raising of the NSG to set up the campus at Manesar in
1985
o Being Instructor in charge of weapon training was responsible for setting and construction of
the firing ranges, identifying the firing practices required to achieve a very high standard of
proficiency with different weapons, and implementing them with the initial courses under
most trying and demanding conditions
Infantry School, Mhow (Instructional Appointments)
o Have had two tenures as Instructor in Weapons in the Infantry School, Mhow which is
considered the Alma mater’ of the Infantry.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
Commanding Officer who raised 9 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion: I am the only Commanding
Officer in the Indian Army to have raised a unit and won the Chief of Army Staffs Unit Citation
during my command tenure
Colonel Q (Works): During my tenure the utilization of funds allotted for works services
reached an all time high of almost 90%, which was unprecedented.
Brigade Commander:
o Conducted the first ever Sino India Border Meetings on 15 August 2003 and 01 Oct 2003 at
Bumla which was widely publicised and was instrumental in improving the bilateral relations
to a large extent.
4. o This was soon followed by the visit of an Indian military delegation to China and Tibet – the
first to be formally allowed by China, of which I was a member.
Sub Area Commander Mumbai:
o The timely and outstanding work of the Army under my jurisdiction and command during the
floods in June 2005 in Mumbai and Southern Maharashtra was greatly appreciated by the
State Government.
o Letters of appreciation from the Secretary Relief and Rehabilitation and Chief Minister of
Maharashtra were sent to the Rakhsha Mantri.
o The citizens of Mumbai held a reception to felicitate the Defence Forces which was
unprecedented
As General Officer Commanding an Infantry Division:-
o Was able to validate an operational deployment in which I was able to create additional
reserves for the higher commanders from within existing resources, which was greatly
appreciated by them
o 58 vintage Sector tanks which were mostly non operational due to lack of spares and
maintenance was made operational within two months of my taking over command.
o The Army School run by the Division, which had the devious distinction of having two of its
Principals sacked consecutively before my assuming command, stood first in All India CBSE
Class XII Board Results of 2008-09 amongst all Army Schools in the small category
Additional Director General Infantry:-
o Was the sponsor Directorate and responsible for raising of additional forces (approximately
two Divisions) as part of force accretion approved by the Government of India, Ministry of
Defence to cater for the enhanced security of the Eastern Theatre in the stipulated time
frame in the 11th Plan.
o Carried out the Third Cadre Review of Infantry personnel below officer rank (approximate
strength 4.38 lakh) to meet the aspirations of the rank and file in conformity with the
existing environment. The Second cadre review had been carried out in 1984
Deputation to NSG from 1985 to 1987:-
o Constructed all the firing ranges at Manesar and was part of the core group which set up the
Training Centre at Manesar and started the initial training courses.
o Built the first Electronic Shooting Range in the country for reflex shooting.
o Constructed the Anti terrorist Conditioning Course for NSG probationers which are still in
use.
o Captained the NSG Shooting team in the first Prime Ministers Open National Combat
Shooting Championship

Age - 57 years.
Married. Wife is homemaker.
Two children - Son aged 30 years working with IBM, Bangalore, and daughter 27 years,
graduate of IHM was working with Leila Kempinski, till her marriage with Maj Joydeep
Chattopadhyay in Jan 2010.
Date of Superannuation: 30 Nov 2012.
