How to get Rid of Bed Bugs at Home
How to get rid of bed bugs at home requires a certain amount of
dedication and commitment, as bed bugs are a particularly
insideous insect to deal with. Unlike other insects, such as
cockroaches and fleas, a much different approach is required.

The first thing that needs to be done, is to establish the level of
infestation in the home. Usually, the first indication that you have
bed bugs in your home, is when someone gets bed bug bites, and
as this usually occurs in the bedroom, this would seem the logical
first place to check. However, if bites occured elsewhere in the
home (a couch in a living room, for example), then an examination
of this area is required too.

It's also important to try and establish how bed bugs entered your
home, as its likely they were brought in via luggage or backpacks,
or even on the clothing of somebody. This is a common method
how bed bugs spread from place to place, with many hotels,
dormitories, hostels and suchlike as likely places to be infected.

Another method is via secondhand furniture, such as beds and
upholstered furniture. Always be wary of bringing such items into
the home, without first giving them a thorough inspection for the
possibility of bed bugs.

When checking for bed bugs, you will need to very meticulous in
your examination of all likely places, as bed bugs are so tiny and

flat that they can hide in all sorts of cracks and crevices, behind
peeling wallpaper, behind hanging picture frames, under carpet
flooring, and even in electrical outlets.

The first thing thats needs doing is clearing any clutter from the
bedroom, but don't take it outside the bedroom until you have
thoroughly inspected it. All suspect items will need to be bagged
and laundered at a minimum of 120°F for about 20 mins, to kill all
life stages of the bed bugs.

Initially the bed, mattress, and bed clothes will need minute
inspection for not only the bugs themselves, but also for such things
as blood stains from crushed bugs, fecal spots (digested blood),
shed skins etc. A good flashlight and magnifying glass are essential
here.

During the inspection process have a vacuum cleaner at hand, to
help capture and contain any bed bugs found, and make sure its the
type that uses filter bags.

During the early stages of a bed bug problem, the bugs tend to
congregate mostly in beds and other sleeping areas. As the
infestation grows bigger, they tend to move beyond beds into other
locations making control of them more difficult. Upholstered chairs
and sofas should also be examined, both above and beneath,
especially seams, tufts, skirts and crevices.

Once all bedding, clothing, furniture, wall fittings, carpets (especially
behind beds and furniture) and wall fittings have been thoroughly
inspected and vacuumed, then other likely places need
examination. These include cracks in wood molding, ceiling-wall
junctures, behind wall-mounted picture frames, mirrors, switch
plates and outlets. Also under loose wallpaper, and amongst
clothing and clutter stored in closets. Even inside clocks, phones,
televisions and smoke detectors, if the infestation necessitates it.

Once all likely hiding spots have been thoroughly inspected and
cleaned, you will need further eradication methods for the bed bugs
and bed bug eggs that have in all likelyhood been missed. One of
the most effecient methods for this is to use a steamer.

Use a commercial unit if possible, as it will save you time. Also,
make sure it is the 'dry vapor' type, as this produces less moisture,
thus reducing drying time.

Slowly and methodically proceed around the room, making sure to
get into all crevices and cracks whereever they may be. All
suspected areas of the bed, mattress and box springs will need
treatment, as will other room furnishings, as described above. Keep
the steamer head in close contact with all the surfaces you are
treating – this is the only way to ensure that the bugs are treated
with the highest possible temperature to make sure that they are
killed instantly.

Keep in mind that whilst properly applied steam at the correct
temperature will kill all remaining bed bugs and any of their eggs,
these areas can be prone to re-infestation, as there is no residual.
As such, some form of treatment is necessary to ensure any
remaining bed bugs you have missed will be exterminated.

There are many procucts on the market for bed bug treatment,
including sprays of one type or another, but for best results, l would
recommend Diatomacious Earth. Often referred to as 'DE', this is an
off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine
phytoplankton. DE is almost pure silica (with some beneficial trace
minerals) and under a microscope, it looks like shards of glass.

On any beetle-type insect that has a carapace, like fleas,
cockroaches and bed bugs, the DE works itself under the shell and
punctures the body, which causes the bugs to dehydrate and die.

DE is completely nontoxic. There is no buildup of tolerance like
there is to poisons, as the method used for killing is physical, not
chemical. But it won't hurt mammals. Because we can eat it. In fact,
we do eat it! It's in many grain based foods because a lot of grains
are stored with diatomaceous earth to stop assorted bugs from
eating the grain!

Diatomacious Earth will last forever, but to be effective, make sure
to keep it dry, as if it becomes moist, its not as effective at killing
bed bugs.

Sprinkle it around beds and in all suspected areas, especially in
crevices and cracks. It can also be used for electrical items that
have harbored bed bugs, such as electrical sockets and outlets.

After the methods just described, you will need to do regular and
thorough inspections about every two weeks, to be sure of
complete eradication. Or until such time as you are completely
satisfied no more bed bugs remain.
