Why Engineering graduates not able to find job today
1. Why Engineering Graduates Not Able To
Find Job Today
Do you know that more than 6 lacs engineers being pumped into the economy year, but only about 18%
are ready to be deployed in the IT Services industry. Also, the number drops to as low as 3% for IT
product roles” According to the latest edition of National Employability Report , Engineers,2014.
Himanshu Aggarwal, co-founder and CEO, Aspiring Minds released a report, which stated that “Of the
1.2 lakh candidates surveyed across many states in India, and about 91.82% lack programming and
2. algorithm skills, 60% lack domain skills, 73.63% lack English speaking and comprehension skills, 57.96%
have poor analytical and quantitative skills and 71.23% lack soft and cognitive skills”. He also said, “The
low employability among engineering pass outs is a cumulative outcome of poor education standards
with higher demand of skilled employees, and creating a drastic skill gap in the country.”
There are plenty of reasons behind why most of the engineering graduates of India are not employable
and some of the key once are listed below:
Outdated Learning In Colleges
One reason could be why engineering students are not relevant to industry today is Outdated learning in
many engineering colleges in India. Also, learning the fundamentals is one thing, but learning past
programming languages like ADA, LOGO, APL, etc., and not staying in touch with the industry.
Theory vs Practice
Today's education system poses a gap between practice and theory and very little of what is learnt at
engineering college in India can be put into practice in everyday life. Therefore, the best performers of
the system are the students with the best grades, in fact can do a little work and need to be individually
trained for it.
Lack of exposure In Colleges
3. In many engineering colleges, the amount of exposure provided to students about the industry is very
little, and it is not until the last year of their college that students started to understand what the
industry wants. So, given a great early exposure to students is very important as an early exposure to the
industry can provide them an idea of what is relevant in the industry, which students can learn in their
own time.
The Knowledge Commission of India headed by Sam Pitroda (2005–2009) has said that the India will
need more than 1,500 universities by 2015 to provide opportunities of higher education to eligible
Indian youths. There are more than 700 universities and 33,000 colleges today and these colleges
provide a large number of programmes in Engineering, Technology, Science, Finance, Commerce, Law
and Medicine. No doubt that India has grown in terms of number of universities, colleges and
programmes, but still there is a big gap between the quantity and quality of higher education.
