Using solar and wind energy on the farm to cut costs
1. Using Solar and Wind Energy on the Farm to Cut Costs
To cut energy costs in sunny locales such as southern Ontario, many businesses are
converting to solar and wind energy to help power their offices or factories. Converting
to these energy sources also helps manufacturer's cut down on emissions that come from
their factories which can pollute the air and generate fines for them from the local state or
territorial governments. One industry that is utilising clean energy more and more is the
agricultural industry.
Wind power has been used on farms and ranches from the beginning of time. Wind has
provided power to draw water up from the ground to provide for livestock and crops and
the first electrical energy sources were generated by wind mills connected to batteries that
stored the power for use in the home or a barn. Wind energy has also been used to grind
grains into flour for centuries.
Greenhouses that supply fruits, vegetables and flowers during the winter months or when
out of season, often use solar and wind power to generate the heat and light necessary to
grow crops. A greenhouse can use the direct light from the sun for the photosynthesis
process that plants require, but if the sun becomes too hot, which it can easily do, sun
shades can be drawn over the greenhouse to protect the plants. Water that is needed in the
production process can be pumped by wind energy, just as it has been for centuries.
Farmers can also make money from their investment in wind and solar energy. Any
excess energy they produce can often be sold back to the utility companies in their area.
The utility companies buy back the energy that isn't needed and the farmer can pick up a
tidy sum of cash while cutting energy costs for his farm.
Cleave Energy, which is a supplier of solar energy equipment, can help ranchers and
farmers design the systems they need to provide energy to their farms and ranches and cut
their energy costs. Click here to learn more about using alternative energy for
agricultural businesses. What have you got to lose when there is so much to gain from
renewable energy sources?
