The opening credits of True Blood use various micro elements like music, imagery, and lighting to set the tone for the show. Red imagery is used throughout to represent blood, sex, danger, and rebellion. The song "Bad Things" implies the show is set in the Deep South and has a dark, fast, and dangerous theme. Contradicting images of sex/drugs and religious symbols suggest the characters will have complex personalities. Together these elements establish that True Blood is a dark, scary drama about vampires set in the American South.
1. True Blood
True Blood is based on a red theme. The color red is often associated with blood, sex, danger, passion, stop, and rebellion. This is shown
through the different Micro Elements used throughout the opening to True Blood.
The music throughout the credits is called Bad Things by Jason Everett. It has a Deep South American country rock tune to it. This song
implies that the programme is set in the Deep South of America. The lyrics and name of the song give a good implication towards he
contents of the T.V Drama. It gives us the idea that the programme has a dark, fast and dangerous theme.
The images and videos during the clip begin slowly the as they get quicker they begin to flash through the remaining videos and images,
giving off an eerie feel to the T.V Drama. The video clips and images are designed to look like home/family portraits and footage. This gives
the opening to True Blood a nostalgic effect.
The images used in the opening are very contradicting. Some are of sex, drugs, and alcohol, while others are based on religious signs and
rituals. This gives the audience an idea of what the characters will be like. It suggests that there will be some strong sexual contents and
also that the characters will have very dark and contradicting personalities. It puts forward the idea that the characters will either be seen
as either good or bad.
The Deep Southern Flag is also red. This coincides with the religious imagery. True Blood is clearly set at night due to the dark lighting and
the nightly based images. This again makes it look seedy, dark and dangerous, making the audience think of vampires.
Some of the individual clips have been edited to make them slower or faster. One of the images is of a biting snake. This image has been
put into slow motion so you can clearly see the pounce and the snakes teeth and ferocity are outlined. The other image if of a dead fox and
the decaying process it goes through. The clip has been made to go faster so you can clearly see from the fox’s death to the way it is eaten
and soon dissolves into the earth. These images give the idea that death and violence is good and that it should be respected and
embraced.
Together these Micro elements form the idea that True Blood is a dark and scary T.V Drama. It gives the audience the idea that there will be
lots of violence and gore. It also forms the idea that vampires will be involved due to the different themes used. Finally it gives a clear idea
of where the Drama is based, and this is all shown in the opening credits.
