1. Open Science – to what end
and why ?
PD Dr. med. Sönke Bartling associated researcher
Not travelling, but living in Kreuzberg – which is as good
Opening Science — 1
6. Don´t we share the feeling that there is something
wrong in science ?
7. Artificial competition
For papers, for grants
They were introduced in best faith – politicians wanted to know
what is going on with their money, with the money of the people
they are responsible for
Maybe it is good
However, it created environments in which one can succeed
without being creative and being innovative
Irreproducible results in many fields – you know the
publications....
8. Google does not publish its algorithm to rank web pages – why ?
Because then people do what they have to do to get a high rank
In science – the algorithm is open
People do what they have to do to get high ranks
Is that in alignment with the intention of science ?
Google says “no”
“If you measure a system you change it” – random quantum
physicist
12. Effects
A lot of resources are wasted – people spent time on writing
grants, refurbish papers, ...
The wrong kind of people are incentivized – science, real
progress, needs the odd birds, people that are not afraid of
thinking beyond current narratives
Writing grants can be seen as a proof of work, that a group can
work together – however, if they share an interest, they could
work together without writing a grant, spend the energy on
experiments
13. Who limits the system ?
If you measure publications – people will publish – the publishers
will not stop you
If you measure patents – nothing more easier than that, just file
patents – the lawyers will not stop you
If you measure the amount of startups – investors and banks will
not stop you
14. We are not generally critizing (because we cannot change it right now)...
The involvements of industries and lobbies into science
- Maybe this is the way our society works
- Or “Enclosures”
Manager types that run scientific organizations
Politicans who do what is expected
However, we want science to be colorful and to be supportive of all
kind of thinkers. That is what makes science different from other
fields. Give a chance to all of them – and not only the “nice” and
“comfortable” people
15. What can be done ?
We have to accept that real scientific progress canno´t be
measured
“Good science, original work, always went beyond the body of
received opinion, always represented a dissent from orthodoxy.
However, then, could the orthodox fairly assess it?”
Richard Rhodes mod. from Michael Polanyi in “Making of the
Atomic Bomb”
16. “Ein Zitat wird immer wahr und wichtig klingen, wenn man den
Namen eines antiken Philosophen dahinter schreibt.”
Sokrates
17. To open up science...
We have to educate people about these facts
Tell decision makers, tell politicans, create concepts
We have to adopt new tools, be open, accept new ways of
thinking, have open data
We have to accept that we will run against walls. Stay calm, and
carry on
History will tell
18. What we like to do
Write about the status quo, educate people
Think about new tools that are currently developing
Propose concepts that may be acceptable to policy makers
Be polite ... and be here
19. Think big !
Be enthusiastic
And find a way to make a living in nowadays world to change
tomorrow`s world !
Accept that there are easier ways of making a living today, but
they are less exciting!
Be proud and network
Like being outside of institutions
Stay put and enjoy !
