Good Afternoon and welcome to Safe Photo and Video Sharing- I’m Social Wendy and today I will be spotlighting how you can create safe photo and video sharing guidelines to maximize the power of these exciting tools for the future career benefit of the youth in your lives. And, you may answer some of the questions you are too afraid to ask yourselves. So let’s get right to it….
Okay, today Teens are creating content… By the bucket loads, that is photos, videos, music and other kinds of “content” they create or capture on their many tech devices… Cellphones, mp3s, laptops, desktops, you name it teens are PLUGGED IN and have become today’s citizen publishers. As with any revolution- there are good things and there are challenges. The positives and the risks. Today we’ll touch on those things and point to a few easy guidelines you can put in place right away to make sure your youth are “safe” and productive when using the Internet and today’s social media. As the adult or mentor, we can see into the future, or at least we like to think we can- at minimum, we can apply our experiences to the current time and try to give guidance about the actions to take and what to avoid in situations our youth face. The Internet and Social Media are no different than any other facet of life our teens face… so, we set guidelines and make suggestions and hope they follow them. So, let’s explore how you can today begin to support your teen in their safe video and photo sharing activities online.
So, let’s start with a quick overview of the Video Sharing landscape- There are several video sharing sites, lots of good choices, but by far the largest is You Tube, so we will focus our attention there in just a few minutes. The important things to think about are the concept of public vs. private The lifespan of the videos shared What is your goal for sharing a video- is it a public goal?
Next let’s do a quick overview of the Video Sharing landscape- There are several video sharing sites, lots of good choices, but by far the largest is Flickr, so we will focus our attention there in just a few minutes. The important things to think about are The concept of public vs. private- again is this a public oriented goal? Define the goals of your Flickr presence What is your goal for sharing a video- is it a public goal?
Okay let’s go back to our core topic… “how do I control my teen online?” right… Well, the answer is the same as in life- you don’t!
So, if I can’t control them, how can I GUIDE them to productive, safe, healthy ways to participate in these emerging technologies that they will need to be competent at to succeed? Three simple considerations: Establish your household rules Consider your teen- who are they What are your teens career goals? Let’s go online and look at our Wired for 2020 program examples as we needed to keep in mind a youth and teen audience when creating them… in addition to the caring adult audience.
So we will start with Video Sharing on You Tube Go to YouTube.com and search for Weare Wired Click on our Channel and you are there Let’s just take a couple minutes to familiarize you on how you can create a youth friendly You Tube presence… always remembering you are in cyberspace- you cannot control everything- you can take all your precautions about what you know about- but there are always things we don’t know. Times that your teen will need to refer to your guidelines to make that good judgment call. Okay- let’s look at Weare’s site First the Content- Career Goal- does what he is sharing help him get an internship, job, or similar- does it hurt? Public- did he use a good “public” rule Benefit- will this benefit him Okay, how about the Access Career Goal- will people and organization’s looking to hire him be able to qualify him? Safety- can you find him? Is he using good safety guidelines? Promotion- does it promote him in a positive light? Finally, the caring adult’s role, the- Monitoring Can you tell that Weare’s caring adult’s have defined safe guidelines for his video sharing? Can you Google Weare and find out where he lives or other private information? Has Weare likely provided his passcode for his account to his caring adult? Alright, let’s do the same thing for photo sharing on Flickr.
Again LOG ON to the www.flickr.com/wearewired URL As you can see Flickr is set up more like a scrapbook than a video channel, although you can upload short videos to Flickr. What Flickr is great for is capturing your youth’s recognition content- i.e.- their portfolio if you will. And, this is much easier to do as they grow than when you need it. Content Awards Achievements Civic Involvement Access Settings Tags & Search Goals Monitoring Guidlelines Periodic Review Passcode
