Massive Open
Online Courses
By Sweetness N Nkosi
14 February 2014
introduction
 MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is a
form of a distance education, with almost all
of teaching and learning occurs online.
 This program is designed to allow a number
of students to participate effectively.
History of MOOCs
 The word MOOC was coined in 2008 by Dave
Cormier from the University of Monitoba.
 This format has been used a couple of times
by George Siemens and Stephen Downes in
their CCK( Connectivism and Connective
knowledge course).
 The early MOOCs were less about presenting
content and more about connecting learners.
Two types of MOOCs
cMOOC
 cMOOCs stands for Connectivist MOOC
 cMOOCs are based on the concept of
connectivism
 They are typically developed and led by
academics through open source web platform
 They involves informal learning and focuses
on knowledge creation and generation.
xMOOC
 xMOOC typically describes courses offered
through the coursera/udacity/edX
 The courses are structured around more
conventional lecture formats
 These courses involves formal learning and
focuses on knowledge duplication.
 While cMOOCs focuses on network building
and collaboration xMOOC deals with
organised group work.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
 Student can collaborate
with their peers from
different parts of the world.
 They help people who
have barriers to learning,
such as lack of funding
and un-accessible
geographical location
 most MOOCs are free
 they are designed to be
interactive.
Disadvantages
 They make it easy for
students to drop out
 MOOCs provides no active
feedback due to the large
number of students
 Students need to be
responsible for their own work
because MOOCs provide
self-directed learning
 Its hard to facilitate a
meaningful conversation.
How have MOOCs developed
 Currently, there is a total of eight courses(xMOOCs)
including chemistry, computer science, electronics and
public health
 The popularity of MOOCs has attracted a great deal of
attention from HE institutions and private investors
around the world.
 In January 2013, Udacity launched its first MOOCs-for-
credit, in collaboration with San Jose State University
 In September 2013, edX announced a partnership with
Google to develop Open edX, which is an open source
platform.
The field of my interest on
MOOCs
 I'm mostly interested in languages and business
studies MOOCs because that’s what I am going to
teach
 But looking at my background, my other interest
will be Teaching computing
 Teaching Computing:Part2 (future learn) is a
MOOC that I think I will join
 This two part course is for primary and secondary
school teachers who are preparing to tackle the
new computing curriculum
Continuation of the last slide
 I would like to take part on this MOOC because, as an
upcoming teacher I want to learn more computer skills
due to my background, I really want to change some of
the township situation, where you find both teachers
and learners are unable to use computer for teaching
and learning.
 The topics that I am willing to discuss include: How can
the use of technology improve the teaching and leaning
process
 And how can we make the use of technology in the
classroom interesting, to make it more effective.
