Developing a question (this should be an area of
interest for you)
I am interested in Scorsese as
he is my favorite director and
his films are full of recurring
themes and motifs.
Scorsese's obsession with
guilt, sin and redemption
Jotting down initial ideas (what would I really like
to find out) and defining my films.
My focus - it
has a number
of themes I
want to focus
on, which are
highlighted by
his filming
style.
This is another
Scorsese anti-hero.
The visual style
(especially sound and
editing) are really
important for
addressing the idea
of a tormented soul.
It's obvious to me that
Scorsese's film are
influenced by religion. I
am interested in looking
how he ambitiously
portrays the humanity of
Christ.

Textual analysis
of about 2 scenes from each film.
A focus group
with a film studies teacher who using clips of the film
to discuss.
Books
(my starting point is Scorsese on Scorsese by Michael
Henry Wilson but there are so many on him)
Magazines
(interviews with Scorsese and retrospectives on his
earlier films.)
Internet
scorsesefilms.com gave me some initial insight.
Journals
Images Journal is great place to start.
Gathering research from as a many different places
as possible. (Collecting useful quotes and making
notes along the way as keeping a record of where I
got the information from)

Reflecting on what I think I have found out, what it
all means and what ideas this has given me.
Write the Annotated Catalogue.
Numbered
Correctly referenced.
Clear notes
This is a list of the best bits of research
you uncovered.
How it is related to the area of
investigation
What value the item offers to the project
The nature and the reliability of the
sources
How it compares to other items
The basis for its inclusion.
References to unused items
(these are items I won't use in the
Presentation script.)
A concluding paragraph on how the research
went and my key findings.
