General guidelines for writing reaction papers (Read this document fully! It’s 5 pages and contains important information): Reaction papers are thought papers where you critique an article. As you read the assigned articles, point out 1) at least one interesting fact that you learned from the introduction, 2) study’s strengths, 3) the limitations of their research design (for example, the way they defined or measured their variables, the measures’ reliability/validity, their data collection technique [e.g., self-report, lab visits, direct observation]), 4) implications of their findings (so what do they findings mean in real world!. In your implications section you must relate the study’s findings to real life, and give it some context to make it relevant for lay people), 5) future direction ideas (what would you want to test next to build up on the findings of this research, and/or to address its shortcomings). These are some questions to have in mind as you read the article: · Did they account for confounding factors? · What other factors could explain their findings? · Were the findings substantial? Who will benefit from these? · What were some of the considerations or little things that the researchers took into account that strengthened their design? · If you were to do subsequent investigations, what next steps would you take? · Also, if the article posed questions in your mind, mention the questions and take a stab at giving answers too! Show me that you’ve thought the article thorough. I evaluate your reaction papers based on thedepth of your thoughts and how sophisticated and well explained your arguments comments are. SUPER IMPORTANT NOTE regarding LIMITATIONS: When pointing out the limitations, EXPLAIN how addressing the limitation could mean getting different results. For example, if the study’s participants are all socioeconomically advantaged and you see this a limitation because it’s not nationally representative, discuss how results of a mid/low SES sample could be different. Simply saying that the results aren’t “generalizable” IS NOT ENOUGH. You must justify your argument for selecting a more diverse sample, otherwise there is not enough evidence to suggest that the study’s findings are not generalizable! Again, please realize that it is your explanations and arguments that I evaluate, so don’t leave your comments unexplained or unsupported. SUPER IMPORTANT NOTE regarding STRENGHTS: I have found that students are often confused as to what they should consider a “strength” and what things are just “given (must haves!)” in a work that is published in an academic journal. Below are things that are NOT strengths, and rather “given”, so please don’t include these as strengths of the article! Essay 2: Argument - A Social Topic Viewed Through the Media Assignment: A social issue is on that concerns everyone in any given society. Subsequently, these issues concern each and every one of us to some degree. Therefore, we each have a stake in various issues listed in chapters 19-24. Your assignment is to choose a social issue, read the essays in that section of the text, identify the issues discussed and join in on “the conversation” that takes place. Write an essay in which you (1) unpack and define a social issue of your choice, (2) demonstrate your mastery of analysis, synthesis, evaluation, critical thinking, and reasoning, (3) explore how this particular social issue is treated by, represented in, exacerbated through, or perpetuated via the media, and, lastly, (4) detail what your role in all of this will be in the years to come: what will you do in the face of this issue? How will you address this issue as it manifests itself in your social sphere? Consider carefully what readers may already know about the particular social injustice you select to explore and define (or redefine), and how your essay can effectively add to their knowledge. Please keep your focus narrow by exploring and writing about detailed and specific examples. Keeping your topic as narrow as possible helps keep your essay on track. Also, please consider the social impact involved in this topic. Why should it matter to your reader? In what ways are you as the writer advancing our knowledge of ourselves and what is going on around us, and that we, in effect, may be contributing to the issues in our society. How are you going to reconcile truth and perception? Objectives: As the writer, you will be able to— —Ameliorate your diction and avail yourself of locution suitable for a scholar entering into “The Conversation” that transpires at this institution. Essay #3: Social Media Essay How does social media (and your use of devices which allow you to access social media) affect your life, your relationships with friends and family, your experience and performance at school? Write an essay in which you describe your experience with social media (either direct experience or what you've observed in friends/family). Discuss the effects of social media, and try to arrive at some conclusions that sum up your thoughts and feelings on this subject. In your discussion, refer briefly to one or two of the authors we have read on this topic, using a relevant quotation (or paraphrase or summary). Incorporating ideas from these experts lets the reader know that you are a serious person and are aware of what other people are saying about this topic. It's also to give you some points to agree or disagree with. However, the focus of the essay should be on your ideas. This one is about you. The quotations or references to other authors are just to lend you a little credibility. (For examples, look at how Shirky and Pinker refer briefly to other published works.) This is a reflective essay, not an argumentative essay, so you do not have to try to convince your reader to agree with your point of view. Cruser's "Cropped Out of My Own Fantasy" is probably the best example of the kind of essay you are meant to write, though yours should be more of an academic essay rather than a newspaper article. For this essay, "social media" can refer to such services as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on, which are used to communicate and share information, ideas, updates, and life events with friends. (Not a social media user? If you do not use social media, or if you were previously a user and have given it up, write about that. What is behind your decision not to engage? Did something happen? What is your reasoning? How does your non-use of social media affect your relationships with other people who do use it? Do you feel more or less connected, or differently connected? Explain. What are your thoughts about social media?) Do not try to say everything you can think of about every kind of social media. Do not simply summarize your experiences with social media. Choose examples for specific reasons. Do not simply make a catalogue of "positive effects" and "negative effects." Think about your experiences and think about what they mean. Use a couple of illustrative examples that you can describe in some detail and explore and explain. You might even choose just one major experience you have had (the time my life was saved/ruined by something that happened on Twitter!) and use that experience as a way into a meaningful exploration and discussion. Excess will be severely penalized: I will not read more than 1200 words of typed text body, properly formatted (not including title page or footnotes). 3. The term paper is due on 5 April 2022 no later than 4:00PM MDT. Assignments received after 4:00PM MDTon the due date will be deducted as per the syllabus’ late policy. 4. Use letter-size paper, 12-point font, full double-spacing (nothing less!), 1" margins, and a simple typeface (Times New Roman is all you need). Your submission must be printed double-sided in hardcopy; electronic submissions will not be accepted. If you do not have your own printer, SUBPrint can print off your assignment for a small fee. 5. COMPOSITION NO. 4: PERSUASIVE ESSAY A persuasive essay is an essay written to convince an audience to think in a certain to way or to take an action. A good persuasive essay presents arguments, shows evidence, and appeals responsibly to the emotions of its audience. Because different audiences respond to different arguments and varying emotional appeals, a persuasive essay must build its case forcefully and intelligently for its audience. Guidelines for Achievement A persuasive essay: • begins with a concise statement of position on an issue that will interest the audience. • presents its points clearly and logically. • supports its position with valid evidence and logical arguments (facts, statistics, examples, reasons, expert opinions) and responsible appeals to emotion. • addresses an audience whose views probably differ from the writer’s. • anticipates opposing arguments. • ends in a way that prompts readers to change their thinking or to take a certain course of action. What Issue Should I Write About? The point of a persuasive essay is to change your readers’ minds. If all your readers already agree with you about an issue or a debate resolution, then whom are you persuading? If you have not already been assigned a topic and wish to find one that hits a nerve, try any of these strategies: 1. Scan the editorial pages of your newspaper for a controversial issue such as a social or political problem that affects you or someone 2. Research some of the ethical dilemmas arising from technological or scientific advances such as genetic research. 3. Tune in to a radio talk show and list the gripes that callers have. Is there a caller to whom you would like to respond? 4. Conduct a class survey to find out what issues are of concern to your peers. Developing Thesis Statements Once you have chosen an issue, you must develop your position, or thesis statement. Developing your thesis statement right away will help you focus on your issue as you draft your essay. You should include your thesis statement in the introduction of your essay to let your readers know what issue you have chosen and what your position is. Narrow your position to one strong, clear statement incorporating as usual topic, purpose and method. One way to formulate your position and focus on an issue is to ask yourself the question “What should be done about it?” Keep revising your answer until you can state your conclusion in one sentence. Assignment 2: LASA 2: Final Version of Your Argumentative Research Essay This final paper represents five modules of planning, research, writing, and revising. The work you have done on your topic throughout this class has prepared you to proofread and revise your paper a final time before you submit it for grading. Use the checklist, grading criteria, and other resources in this module to review and revise your work. In particular, be sure to check your work for content and cohesiveness. Does your paper have a clear argument that is expressed through your thesis statement? Do all of the paragraphs in your paper work to support that argument? Have you used appropriate resources to lend support and credibility to your argument? Does your paper address opposing points of view, and does it respond to those opposing points? As you conduct your final revision, take into account any feedback you’ve received on earlier pieces of your paper. Also try to put yourself in your readers’ shoes as you review your work. After a number of modules dealing with this topic, you are probably quite familiar with the nuances of your own paper. As you review your work, think about how your essay might be received by someone who is not as familiar with the issues you discuss. Try to make your paper as clear and straightforward as possible so your points can be readily understood. The final version of your paper should be between 8-10 pages in length and cite at least 8 reliable sources using APA format. You may utilize the Grading Criteria posted below and the Argumentative Research Essay Checklist to make sure that your work is aligned with the assignment requirements. Social Problem Research Project: Introduction For the research project, which will span the last few modules, you will choose a problem in society that you feel needs a solution or improvement. Then, you will research the problem, including its causes and effects, and propose a practical solution (or two) to the issue. You will argue your problem in a researched, academic essay. This assignment has four major parts: Part 1: A memorandum where you will acknowledge your purpose and goals in a formal writing format (100 points due in Module 6) Part 2: Annotated Bibliography in which you list and detail your sources (100 points due in Module 6) Part 3: A digitial presentation, where you will organize and detail your intended essay’s research via PowerPoint or similar program. (100 points due in Module 7) Part 4: An argumentative research essay for the academic community, where you will detail the problem and its potential solution(s) persuasively with credible research for evidence and backing (200 points due in Module 8) Topic Selection It’s important for you to choose a topic that you are passionate about so that you are more invested in its research. I will not choose a topic for you, but I do have some guidelines: Off-Limit Topics: If the major backing for a topic roots itself in opinion, morality, or religious belief, then it is not an effective topic for an academic inquiry. For those reasons, please avoid the following topics: abortion, religious preference, death penalty, marijuana use, assisted suicide, and gay marriage. Overly General Topics: Your essay will be about 5 pages long; you are not writing a book. Therefore, you need to choose a topic that is manageable. Topics that are too broad include gun control, child abuse, global warming, obesity, sex trafficking, violent media, teen pregnancy, bullying, or drug abuse. Nevertheless, these topics aren’t completely unavailable to you; if you’re interested in one of these ideas, you need to narrow it to a smaller central argument. (See below.) Narrowed, Manageable Topics: Avoid choosing a broad, complex issue that cannot be easily solved. Since you only have a few weeks to work on this paper and to propose effective solutions, you should narrow your topic down into a feasible focus. For example, instead of “gun control,” you could narrow the focus to “A problem in society is that many guns are bought and sold without proper background checks and training.” With this topic, you can research more effectively. As you narrow your topic, make sure you can state it as a problem (e.g. “A problem in society is _________.). Moreover, you should begin to imagine a practical solution for the problem. For example, a solution for your problem would not be that “guns must be eliminated everywhere”; this is too broad and too problematic. A Word of Caution: It’s important that you narrow your topic effectively, but be sure not to narrow too much. For this assignment, you should choose.
