Editor's Notes

  1. In today’s business environment, customers are challenged to address a wide variety of frequently conflicting questions and concerns in their organizations. Managing these effectively and coming up with workable, creative solutions will ultimately help to make your business more successful. For each of the concerns outlined on this slide, virtualization can help. This presentation will go into more detail on how virtualization can make a difference for you – and in some cases, an immediate difference.
  2. The Need for a Desktop StrategyEssential Points to Land:The desktop ismore than the OSEssential to have a complete desktop strategyThere are 4 essential components of the desktop: data, applications, OS, hardware: a complete desktop strategy should consider how these things work together Storyline:The desktop is more than just the operating system: The desktop includes the applications that make your business run, the data with which you make critical business decisions, the settings that help your employees personalize their PCs and make them more productive, and the hardware your users need to access the entire computing environment.  When making client computing decisions, it is essential to have a complete desktop strategy that considers the whole desktop -- User Settings, Data, Applications, browser, and the operating system.  Each one of these desktop components comes with its own set of challenges and considerations, which should be considered in combination with the others to achieve a strategically coherent whole. Transition: Regardless of your strategy, you should be able to support certain essential capabilities for your business.
  3. Implementing your Desktop Strategy (aka the “sniff test”)Essential points to land:When you implement your desktop strategy, ensure that your plan can support 4 essential capabilitiesEnd-to-End management (physical and virtual; native, on prem or in the cloud)Security and Data ProtectionAnywhere Access for UsersBusiness Agility and Continuity(Transition) Microsoft is well positioned to help you meet these needs and gain those capabilities Storyline: However you choose to implement your desktop strategy, there are 4 essential capabilities your strategy should support: End-to-End management (physical and virtual and native, on prem or in the cloud)Management is the most effective way to reduce desktop TCO: According to the core IO research conducted by IDC, moving from a basic or unmanaged environment to a well-managed environment can save nearly $1100 annually per PC (from $1320 to $230) And with the additional considerations posed by desktop virtualization technologies, the ability to cut TCO with good virtualization management makes this capability even more important.Security and Data ProtectionThe average cost of a data security breach is $6.6M, and the total cost of a data breach continues to increase every year, according to a survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute in 2009. Of course this doesn’t even count the effect of loss of customer trust and the subsequent losses customers experience due to their personal information being compromised. Anywhere Access for UsersRemote and mobile work are expected to increase 28% in the 5 years from 2007 to 2012 (IDC). Given this trend, it is essential to provide end users access to applications and data from anywhere, or those highly-paid knowledge workers will not be fully productive.Business Agility and ContinuityIn a joint study by Forrester Research and The Disaster Recovery Journal of 250 disaster recovery decision-makers and influencers, 42% of respondents indicated that a power failure was the cause of their most significant disaster declaration or major business disruption. In many industries, a service interruption is simply an excuse for a customer to jump to a competitor. The ability to execute a plan for all contingencies – whether related to power, weather, disasters, or simply routine disturbances such as moving – is essential for business growth and for regulatory compliance. A flexible desktop strategy gives you the ability to deliver on these capabilities and provide the right resources at the right time to the right users. But the more power you have to be flexible, the greater your capacity for control must be. Imagine driving a very powerful car with very bad brakes and no steering wheel. You wouldn’t have that car for long. But with precision steering and great stopping power, that car would be unbeatable. Similarly, the power and flexibility needed to support a robust strategy needs to be matched by robust management tools. This makes your business more competitive and helps your people achieve their full potential.  Transition: Microsoft is well-positioned to help you achieve these capabilities. Here’s an example of exactly how. All Relevant Data Points: Remote work is expected to increase 28% in the 5 years from 2007 to 2012 (IDC)
  4. The Windows Optimized DesktopEssential points to land:We have a broad range ofrobustsolutionsWe have experience in the enterprise spaceWe have a vision for desktop optimizationStoryline:The Windows Optimized Desktop value proposition becomes crystal clear when considering our range of options and robust possibilities: Microsoft has the best solutions for desktop to datacenter management across physical and virtual targets. Microsoft is unique among vendors for the ability to provide comprehensive management across physical and virtual, datacenter to desktop from a single console. The Windows Optimized Desktop makes it easy to connect your desktop strategy with your overall strategy for managing core infrastructure.  At the base level is client infrastructure, including Windows 7, Internet Explorer, and MDOP. Windows Server infrastructure supports client features like branch cache and direct access and, through Hyper-V, supports VDI environments. This is all tied together with the desktop-to-datacenter and physical-virtual management tools of System Center and security of Forefront for your clients and your servers. Management tools like System Center and MDOP provide the security, access, and application optimization that are important to keep IT costs in check across locally deployed systems, systems and apps that are hosted on-prem in your data center. We’re even extending management into the cloud with solutions like System Center Online desktop manager. Microsoft can help you deliver the right desktop to the right person and drive desktop delivery, access, and maintenance with the tools in the Windows Optimized Desktop.Transition:We all know that in today’s world, one size does not fit all users: Mobile and Office workers have different needs than contractors or task workers. The Windows Optimized Desktop is Microsoft’s vision for what desktop computing should be: it gives end users the flexibility they need to be productive anywhere, while providing IT the control they need to manage risk and keep costs in line. The Windows Optimized Desktop is the modern enterprise desktop experience for end users and IT administrators alike. (Introduce Vignettes as needed)

  6. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/enterprise/solutions/virtualization/operating-system/With Desktop Virtualization, we have broken the bonds between the OS, Application, and Data and User Settings. With Virtualization solutions in each of these areas, we provide our customers the ability to provide the best solution for the customer depending on the individual need. For Data and User Settings: Folder redirection and roaming profiles having the user’s personal profile and data available dynamically on any authorized PC. Providing companies with the ability to back up personal profiles and data to the data center. Solutions: Application Virtualization: Providing end users with the ability to have their business applications available on any authorized PC. Decoupling applications from the operating system (OS) and helping to eliminate application-to-application incompatibility, because applications are no longer installed on the local client machine. In addition, application streaming expedites the application delivery process so that IT no longer needs to install applications locally on every machine.Remote App : programs that are accessed remotely through Terminal Services and appear as if they are running on the end user's local computer. Users can run RemoteApp programs side by side with their local programs. A user can minimize, maximize, and resize the program window, and can easily start multiple programs at the same time. If a user is running more than one RemoteApp program on the same terminal server, the RemoteApp programs will share the same Terminal Services session.VDI: technology enabling users to access their personalized Windows desktops that are hosted on servers. (performance subject to network connection)Session Virtualization: Microsoft has been active in Session Virtualization for over a decade. Session virtualization makes it possible for companies to run an application or an entire desktop in one location, but have it be controlled in another. It allows companies to install and manage session-based desktops and applications, or virtual-machine based desktops on centralized servers in the data center; screen images are delivered to the users, and the users' client machines, in turn, send keystrokes and mouse movements back to the server. When using Session Virtualization, administrators can present users with an entire desktop environment, or with their individual applications and data which they require to complete their task. From a user perspective, these applications are integrated seamlessly—looking, feeling, and behaving like local applications.Enterprise Desktop Virtualization providing companies with the ability to deploy and manage virtual Windows desktops to help enterprises upgrade to the latest version of Windows, without having to worry about application compatibility. Provides companies the ability to run two operating systems on one device, adding virtual image delivery, policy-based provisioning, and centralized management.
  7. Speaker Script:We have been talking a lot about Application Virtualization and virtualization products can be used to both deliver applications and in some cases help to delay often time-consuming application compatibility mitigation. Whether your organization is aiming to host a legacy Windows operating system locally or remotely, provide access to remotely hosted applications, virtualize applications on local clients or any combination thereof, Microsoft’s virtualization products provide the choice and flexibility to meet your needs.Natively-Installed ApplicationsA Windows Installer Package (MSI) contains all of the information that the Windows Installer service requires to install or uninstall an application or product and to run the setup user interface. Each installation package includes an .msi file, containing an installation database, a summary information stream, and data streams for various parts of the installation. The .msi file can also contain one or more transforms, internal source files, and external source files or cabinet files required by the installation.Application developers must author an installation to use the installer. Because the installer organizes installations around the concept of components and features, and stores all information about the installation in a relational database, the process of authoring an installation package broadly entails the following steps:Identify the features to be presented to users. Organize the application into components. Populate the installation database with information. Validate the installation package. Hosted ApplicationsWith Remote Desktop Services (RDS), one of the core virtualization technologies available in Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft is progressing in its vision to provide the best virtualization platform for accelerating and extending desktop and application deployments from the data center to any device. In addition to the traditional session virtualization scenario (formerly known as “Terminal Services”), Remote Desktop Services is expanding its role to provide an extensible platform for a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).RemoteApp programs are accessed remotely through RDSand appear as if they are running on the end user's local computer. Users can run RemoteApp programs side by side with their local programs. A user can minimize, maximize, and resize the program window, and can easily start multiple programs at the same time.Application VirtualizationMicrosoft Application Virtualization (App-V) unlike Machine and Session Virtualization is not used to host a legacy Windows operating system or mitigate application-to-OS compatibility, instead App-V turns applications into centrally managed services that are never installed, never conflict, and are streamed on demand to end users. App-V streams applications on demand over the Internet or via the corporate network to desktops, terminal servers, and laptops.
  8. Virtualizing data and apps is the solution that will provide companies with maximum flexibility For example: Whether a user is Mobile (running in connected and disconnected states), or always connected to a LAN, virtualizing the Application the user needs as well as the Data and User Settings can help an organizationReduce TCO•Save money: reduce application-to-application compatibility test costs•Save Cost: quickly recover from PC failures and PC theftIncrease Business agility•Faster application adoption, deployment and updates with no user interruptions•Quickly recover and get provisioned applications to a new PC – without application installs•Get users’ data on a new PC simply by logging inEnable anywhere access for users•Applications dynamically available on any authorized PC without application installs  - online, offline or over the internet•Enable users to access their data from any authorized PC at any timeExpedite Windows 7 migration•Migrate to Windows 7 now – run older productivity applications inside a Windows XP virtual machine
  9. In the VDI and Session Virtualization scenario, data, applications and the OS are all virtualized in the datacenter For many organizations, virtualizing desktops within the datacenter is seen as an excellent means to provide a centrally managed windows desktop to connected users. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (or VDI) is a fast emerging desktop deployment option for organizations looking to provide a personalized central desktop experience to their users. VDI is complementary to the other Virtualization solutions discussed previously as, with implementation of this technology,  companies will also want to virtualize the Applications and Data and Users Settings  in their organization VDI provides organizations benefits with some inherent benefits, such as:1)Security and compliance:- Since the users desktops, applications and data never leave the datacenter, VDI becomes a preferred way to deliver a secure desktop to user devices, even unmanaged devices such as those belonging to contract workers or employee owned PCs. This also helps organizations comply with strict data regulations, such as those found in the financial services, government and healthcare industries. With Windows 7, organizations can now easily centralize user data with roaming profiles and folder Redirection, while Microsoft application Virtualization helps to deliver applications dynamically to user desktops.2)Centralized Management:- IT always has quick access to centralized desktops, making it easy to roll our patches and upgrades. With Microsoft System Center, IT has a familiar set of tools it needs to manage a heterogeneous desktop environment, making it easy to manage physical, virtual and session based desktops through a single pane of glass. Integrated Management capability also ensures that you minimize your desktop OPEX, leading to a more efficient IT organization.3)Anywhere access:- With the Microsoft VDI suites, user desktops that are hosted centrally on servers within the datacenter can be accessed from virtually any connected device. This means that users get access to their personal data and applications irrespective of hardware, making it possible for organizations to deploy thin clients for their connected users.4)Business continuity and agility:- If the device of a VDI use fails, he/she can get access to their desktop from another device, and hence disruptions due to hardware failures are reduced. Also, since It has access to centralized desktops all the time, it becomes easier to troubleshoot desktop problems.
