Thoracic duct
A precise understanding and knowledge of the anatomy of the thoracic duct is essential to avoid injury
to the duct during surgical procedures performed within the chest cavity. The thoracic duct is the
largest lymphatic vessel, with an hourly flow of lymph estimated at 1.38mL/kg of body weight.(16)
Arising from the upper pole of the cisterna chili at the level of L2 vertebra, the thoracic duct enters the
chest through the aortic hiatus in the diaphragm. The duct ascends to the right side of the midline until
the level of T5, where it then crosses over to the left side. It then continues to ascend adjacent to the
left posterolateral margin of the esophagus. At the level of C7 transverse process, the duct takes an
upward and lateral course to a level approximately 3cm above the clavicle. It then crosses behind the
left common carotid artery, the vagus nerve and the left internal jugular vein. The duct then turns
sharply downward where it crosses anterior to the first part of the left subclavian artery. Most
commonly, the duct drains into the central venous system at the junction of left internal jugular vein
and left subclavian vein. Drainage into the left sided central neck veins is seen in more than 90% of
patients, with the remaining cases draining into a right sided central vein or have a bilateral central
drainage. (17) Despite this described pattern, multiple variations of the

Essay On Loyalty And Loyalty
Customer Satisfaction And Loyalty
Zeithaml and Bitner (2000) defined customer satisfaction as the customers evaluation of a product or
service in terms of whether that product or service has met their needs and expectations . Therefore,
satisfaction is a consumer s post purchase evaluation and affective response to the overall product or
service experience. In other words, what consumer perceives after a product or service consumption
determines his/her satisfaction. Many researches have concluded that satisfaction can determine the
customer loyalty. Customer loyalty defined as a deeply held commitment to re buy or re use a
preferred product/service consistently in the future, thereby causing repetitive same brand or same
brand set purchasing, despite situational influences and marketing efforts have the potential to cause
switching behavior. The satisfaction/dissatisfaction occurring through a matching or mismatching of
expectations and perceived performance leads to loyalty behaviour.
Customer satisfaction was the key factor that affects mostly on service loyalty. Oliver suggested that
satisfaction is a pleasant routine and in order to be effective on loyalty, satisfaction should occur for

United Kingdom Essay
The United Kingdom is a country located in the North West of Europe that has four parts, England,
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The capital city is London, which the River Thames flows
through from Thames Head to 140 miles later at Teddington Lock where it ends. Compared to the
United States, the United Kingdom is quite small in fact it is approximately the size of New England.
Despite being diminutive in size, there is layer upon layer of cultures and history. Also, it has
geographic diversity, from the moors of Devon to the swamps in the southeast to the highlands of
Scotland. Although dwindling, many native languages survived and still spoken to this day. Some of
those are Celtic, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each wave of migrations and invasions brought different cultures and added to what is now modern
day the United Kingdom. The Romans left their numerous long roads, whose names became lost in
time since there was no written records or inscribed sources. Built by the Roman army and long after
they returned home, their roads survived, and some routes are in use today. The Normans built
fortified castles, which was a new concept since before that time there was none in the United
Kingdom. One example is Restormel Castle, which is in a circular in shape as well as surrounded by
an entrenched circular ditch for protection against attacks. The Vikings left parts of their language in
the names of the towns and villages, such as names ending in by are where Vikings settled first. Places
ending in Thorpe are their secondary settlements, and places that end in ton is for town or city.
D. The Saxons replaced the Roman stone buildings with wooden ones. The Saxon language gave rise
to the English spoken today.
Over the centuries, waves of different peoples have invaded or migrated to the United Kingdom.
Beginning with the Romans, Saxons, Normans and continued today. The Jewish people started seeking
safety in the United Kingdom in the late 19th century and the 1930 s. In the 1950 s and 1960 s, large

Of Mice And Men Book Report Essay
The fiction book that I chose for my summer reading was Of Mice and Men . When I was given the
list of fiction books, I went on good reads dot com and looked up all the books on the fiction list. Of
Mice and Men really caught my eye because it was a book about two friends going through tough
times, which always has a deeper meaning of friendship. Once I chose Of Mice and Men I picked it up
at my local library. The book was exceptionally simple to read and my understanding of every page
was straightforward. It only took me a week to read. Prior to reading the book I knew it would be
about two migrant workers that were struggling with making ends meet in hard times
(Goodread.com). The only preconceived notion I thought was going to happen was when Lennie and
George were chased out of a town named Weed because of Lennie s actions, when ... Show more

The story takes place in rural California with the two main characters Lennie and George (Steinbeck).
George is a tiny, lean and sharp featured man who takes care of his friend Lennie (Steinbeck). Lennie
is enormous and awkward with a mental disability that stirs the duo in all sorts of trouble (Steinbeck).
To keep things simple this book is about two friends that need each other to survive in a time where no
one cares about anybody. They flee a town because of Lennie s actions and end up finding work on a
ranch, where they are introduced to many new characters (Steinbeck). Time gets suspenseful at the
ranch and in the end Lennie s gets into more trouble and ultimately dies in the end (Steinbeck). My
favorite character in Of Mice and Men was George because he is a genuine character who is smart and
takes care of Lennie with his mental disability. The beginning, middle and end of the book were very
different. In the beginning, it started of subtle and showed off the heartwarming relationship of George
and Lennie. In the middle it

Comparing The Sea Devil, And The Sea Devil And Edward s Rocks
Without the ocean, life as humankind knows it would be impossible. The ocean has provided the man
a bountiful amount of resources. It is easy to think that the big blue is man s friend. Though with
ninety five percent of the ocean unexplored, it is easy to think that it is more than sandy beaches and
volleyball. Stories such as The Sea Devil and Edward s Rocks express the idea that the sea, as
beautiful as it is, can also be equally as powerful and mysterious. Though stories share similarities
they also have differences between their protagonist, conflict, and settings.
The two stories have many similarities though their locations differ. Both take place at night in a
marine area, with both of the protagonists on a pursuit. and Though they take place in different
decades the stories both occur at night. In The Sea Devil, the night is described as Black as a witch s
cat (Gordon, n.d., p. 2). However, unlike Edward s Rocks, The Sea Devil takes place in a warm
Florida bay in late September, whereas Edward s Rocks takes place in a quiet fishing village of
Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland (Ritson, 1997, p. 300). Edward s Rocks describes George as a
hardy fisherman who hunts for seals for a living with his father and two brothers. While George and
his brothers and father are searching for seals the story says that the sea was ominous, and... felt
uneasy (Ritson, 1997, p. 305), while the protagonist in The Sea Devil night is described as Dark and
silent (Gordon, n.d., p.1).Even though both the stories take place in coastal locations the two
environments have their own unique features, such as the warm Florida bay in The Sea Devil , where s
Edward s Rocks was more of an aggressive northern marine environment.
The conflict in the two stories both can be considered as a person vs environment scenario. The
conflict in Edward s Rocks that George faced was a combination of the weather and navigational
issues. While George his father and brothers are out at sea they used a compass to help them navigate
to Pimming Islands, where they planned to hunt seals. Unfortunately a piece of metal under the
gangboards of their boat which interfered with the compass magnetic field, setting them of course into

Futility In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
William Shakespeare romantic tragedy Romeo Juliet, a play written during the period of 1594 1595,
contains many themes enabling it to be relevant to audiences today. This is because human nature has
remained constant since that period. This play is an Elizabethan misfortune set in the 13th century
England, which conveys the story of two young star crossed lovers who cannot be together as their
families are embroiled in a feud. In Romeo Juliet, Shakespeare uses this futility to symbolize the
themes of the play such as the individual against the society and also the meaning of gender during
these times and how it affected the play as a whole. These themes in Romeo Juliet make the audience
aware that the play does not have a use by date. The individual versus society alludes to the tension or
drama which ensues when an individual does not like to live inside the confinements of their culture
and society. Much of Romeo Juliet includes these lovers struggles against open and social
establishments that either unequivocally or verifiably restrict the presence of their affection. In spite of
the fact that they don t generally work in concert, each of these societal institutions somehow displays
obstructions for Romeo and Juliet. The hostility between their families, coupled with the ... Show

How the Presence of Others Affects Behavior
Have you ever wondered why the company of others affects our behaviour? Why is our performance
improved when you exercise with your friend, and impaired when you are alone? These processes
have been studied for more than a century not only on people, but even on animals, like cockroaches
or chickens. The first scientist who explained that phenomenon was Floyd Allport (1920). Allport
based his conclusions on Tripplet s (1889) observations, and termed it social facilitation, what means
that performance of simple or well learned tasks is improved in presence of others; and social
inhibition which relates to a deterioration of difficult tasks in presence of passive audience (Hogg
Vaughan, 2008). This essay will describe and evaluate key theories such as Drive Theory, Evaluation
Apprehension Theory and Distraction Conflict Theory, which explain mechanisms of social
facilitation and social inhibition. But firstly it is important to refer to the observations and experiment
of Norman Triplett (1889), from who all the research began.
The first person who wanted to find a reason for improved or decreased performance of people in
presence of others was Norman Triplett (1889). He observed that cyclists race faster against each other
than alone, and in order to confirm his inferences, Triplett decided to conduct the first social
psychology experiment. He timed how fast will children reel the fishing line when competing in pairs
or alone, and the results indicated his hypothesis. More

Summary Of False Confessions In Popular Culture
I chose an article from the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Criminology and Criminal Justice. The
title of the article is False Confessions in Popular Culture. I chose this article because I ve always been
fascinated with criminal interviews. I ve attended numerous interview and interrogation courses
throughout my career. One of the best interview schools I ever attended was Reid interview and
interrogation. One of the most debated subjects in all of these courses was false confessions. The
reason I liked the Reid interview and interrogation course is because they offered different techniques
on how to avoid false confessions.
The article starts out discussing all the emotions associated with false confessions and how the news
media and television shows have popularized false confessions. People undoubtedly have made false
confessions for years. The article discusses how the media and tv shows have ... Show more content

Suspects make compliant false confessions due to avoid the stress of a harsh police interrogation.
Interrogations are stressful and worrisome on both the guilty and the innocent. It s hard to believe that
someone would admit to falsely committing a criminal act merely to avoid a harsh interview, but it
does happen. Another reason that people make complaint false confessions is that they feel they will
receive less severe punishment.
Persuaded false confessions is when a suspect during a police interview begins to doubt or second
guess themselves and falsely confesses to a criminal act, despite having no memory of it. Interrogators
have to be careful not to use suggestive interview techniques because they can cause or can generate
false memories of committing crimes (Shaw Porter, 2015). Over the course of my career, I ve had
numerous people make false confessions. That s why interview schools are so

The Description Of Yahweh From Exodus 34 Essay
The description of Yahweh found in Exodus 34:5 7 is a significant and influential passage from the
Old Testament text which is foundational for biblical theology, since it provides the most complete
description of both the name and the nature of God found anywhere within the scriptural canon. Its
significance can is noted by the fact that this passage is quoted and referred back to at least eleven
times throughout the Old Testament including in the books of Jeremiah, Joel, Numbers, Nehemiah,
Lamentations, Daniel, and 1 Kings.. In order to fully understand the meaning and purpose of this
passage, several other passages must be considered which serve both as anticipatory texts and texts
which provide contextual meaning. One such text is found in the thirty third chapter of Exodus. The
passage from Exodus 34 is especially significant as many characteristics of Yahweh are revealed to
Moses by Yahweh Himself. Another important aspect of this passage is its poeticism and the fact that
it reveals the innate characteristics of God in such a way that demonstrates literary beauty and rhythm.
Many phrases and expressions in this passage are presented in pairs. This is augmented by the fact that
this passage, in the broadest sense, serves to emphasize the two aspects of God which are most basic.
These two aspects are His love and His justice. The purpose of this paper is to examine and analyze
this passage in Exodus 34, as well as several contextual texts, in order to attempt to grasp

What Does The Button Baby Mean In The Great Gatsby
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896. He is famous
for many short stories, many taking place during the Jazz Age and one specifically is The Curious
Case of Benjamin Button (Bruccoli 1). It is a work on which a baby is born an old man and ages
backwards. Fitzgerald wrote that he was inspired to write it by a remark made by Mark Twain: It is a
pity that the best part of life comes at the beginning, and the worst part at the end (Lanham 1). In this
short story no one attempts to discover the reason for Benjamin s condition or find a cure. Throughout
his life he battles society and the social norms of the world. The Button baby is born in 1860, at a time
when most children were born at home. Fitzgerald starts off the short story by saying, I shall tell ...

The Importance Of College Tuition
Furthermore, tuition annual rate has an outrageous inflation relationship with time. In Josh Mitchell
and Andrea Fuller Wall Street Journal it states, Among the four year schools in the Journal s analysis,
the average increase in tuition and fees was greater than 75% in the past decade, outpacing inflation.
(pp9). As college tuition continue to increase, the more individuals will be in debt. While the
importance of a higher education increases the chances of becoming successful, more people will
gravitate towards higher education knowing that loans will always be an option and having the idea
that debt is normal to ensure a stable future. Not only will this start to affect individuals but the
government will eventually suffer. Wight Martindale Jr states, ...too much money spent, too little
achieved. (Martindale), this explains how higher education can bring one a tremendous amount of
debt with a bunch of stress. He also talks about how it is a bubble, this is a bubble that many students
hate to be in. This bubble is known for being unable to burst which is a problem for multiple students
because college shouldn t be about money and stress. The more money the government give out and
not receive as much in and they borrow from different countries, the country will stay in debt itself.
Federal and or state governments need to implement a law to keep a reasonable cap on college tuition.
Because college tuition is constantly rising with no cap it creates mental health issues

The Problem Of The Internet
The problem that is ever increasing in size and complexity is the Internet being a danger to people.
The Internet problem is something that is caused by many things like Malware, Spoofing, Viruses and
ransomware. Some of the effects of the problem are loss of finances and personal information.
Another few are victims losing their identity to others and damage to their property. With the amount
of danger the causes make the solution to the problem should be clear and easy to think and make. Yet
sadly the problem with making the solution is people have come up with only small patches that
minimize the damage and lower the chances of being the victim of it but none have solved the
problem in it s entirety. Many of the partial solutions either protect from the problem by fighting it or
by avoiding it altogether. An example of avoiding the danger is by having programs that have a list of
known malicious programs and doesn t let any of those onto the device. A true solution to this problem
would need to either make the problem disappear altogether or to make the problem not be able to
affect people and their devices.
Internet safety has been getting more and more difficult to keep even at the level it is now. This
problem is spreading not just to small businesses, but also to major companies as well with this news

Growth Of Women In Professional Sports Essay
Introduction
As society has evolved through history, one of the great cultural and social issues has been the
equality of gender in all aspects of life. This development has been particularly true in both the United

Ecclesiastes And Harper s Song Comparison Essay
Both the Book of Ecclesiastes and the Harper s Song have similar themes with similar contents, but
different outlooks on life and death and their end goal. According to Lucas, the Harper s Song are
similar to Ecclesiastes in content. The Harper s Song, an Egyptian writing found in the tomb of King
Intef, emphasizes on the enjoyment of life in the present (Lucas, 2008, p. 160). The four passages
from Ecclesiastes, 1:4 and 11, 3:22, and 11:9 10, also presents the enjoyment of life. These passages,
especially Ecclesiastes 11:9 10 explains that one is to remember that we will be judge accordingly
while enjoying one s life. According to Fischer, the contents on the enjoyment of life, the cycles of
generation, and afterlife are the common themes of these two writings.
The enjoyment of life in the present are both discussed in both writings. There are similarities within
the aspects of enjoyment in life. The Harper s Song states, Follow your heart and your happiness, do

there is something after death. Throughout Ecclesiastes, the theme of enjoyment in life without God
points to emptiness. The author of Ecclesiastes is suggesting that an enjoyable life without God is
vanity. Whereas, the Harper s Song does not mention or refer to any gods or to God. It is only
concerned with man s earthly life; it is not concern with one s spiritual life with God unlike the Book

Human Perception of Other Species
KEY QUESTION: HOW HAS HUMAN PERCEPTION OF OTHER SPECIES AND THEIR NEEDS
LED TO CHANGES IN ECOSYSTEM IMBALANCE? INTRODUCTION: The ability to survive
and reproduce by living organisms is constantly being tested by its external environment. Organisms
those are unable to cope up with these changing external factors, face extinction. Over the years,
species have evolved with the changing environmental conditions and have incurred adaptations to
suit their existence in their environment. Hence, the process of evolution, adaptation and extinction of
species has been natural over time. This does not affect the ecosystem much because nature on its own
has an ability to compensate for its losses and changes that are natural. This is where we, Humans
come in. Humans by instinct have a tendency to modify, to exploit their environment to suit their
needs. That is, more than adapting to the environment, their rate of converting the environment to suit
requirements is incomparably higher. This reverse phenomenon is what causes the depletion of other
species which are unable to adapt to the unnatural, fast changes. Nature is ineffectual in recompensing
for these artificial changes which further increases the rate of extinction of species resulting in
ecosystem imbalance. The scientists have predicted that we are presently undergoing the sixth mass
extinction on the history of earth, mainly due to human activities and their effects. Human perception

What Happened In Dunkirk
The feature film Dunkirk, which was released in theatres July 13th, 2017, smashed box office
expectations by ranking in an impressive $50.0 million over its opening weekend. The movie is based
upon a real life event that occurred in May 1940. Christians today can find encouragement from the
movie along with the event itself as its truly a story worth telling and remembering.
What Happened at Dunkirk?
The British army set out to support their allies in France. Germany invaded France unexpectedly
essentially trapping the bulk of the British army, what remained of the Belgian army and three French
armies around the French Belgian border. Operation Dynamo was to be implemented by the British
military. They were hoping to evacuate the forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, there were around 860 ships involved in Operation Dynamo and around 700 of these were
privately owned boats. They became known as the Little Ships of Dunkirk. The smallest boat used for
the operation was a mere 15 feet long and only had the capacity to hold five people. The little ships
were used to ferry the stranded men from the beach to the larger military ships that were waiting in
deeper water, though some of them did carry hundreds of men from the beach directly to England.
The Evacuation Process Was Lengthy:
Although the cinematic portrayal will likely make it seem like less, the process of getting the soldiers
off Dunkirk took nine days, lasting from May 27 to June 4th. In addition, many of the little ships were
piloted by British soldiers not their civilian owners, although there were a few civilians who took the
risk on themselves and acted self sacrificially to reach the stranded soldiers with their boats.
Throughout this time, the Germans continued to fight against the pinned soldiers making the
evacuation process anything but simple.

Civil Disobedience Necessary
Anyone in a free society where the laws are unjust has an obligation to break the law. Henry David
Thoreau
Thoreau wholeheartedly agreed with the idea of questioning a law that many find unjust, and many
agree with him. Citizens that engage in Civil Disobedience are not overextending any form of right,
but are in fact using the ones given to them by their constitution. Also, by engaging in civil
disobedience, citizens are criticizing their government, something that was encouraged in the Greek
and Roman republics which the United States bases the government upon.
Civil Disobedience is remarkably effective without the violence that many had thought necessary.
Several famous examples include the Salt March of Mahatma Gandhi, the Civil Rights movement of
Martin Luther King Jr., and even the sit ins of the factory workers during the industrial revolution.
Although, many still argue that civil ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Go Ask Alice Essay
Go Ask Alice is not just any other novel, it is written in the form of a diary. What also makes this
novel interesting is that it s claimed to be taken from an actual diary. And because of that it caused a
sensation back in 1971 when it was first published. Although some people believe it is not taken from
an actual diary, still to this day it doesn t have an author: it is written by Anonymous. The plot of this
novel is based around a 15 year old girl who starts writing in a diary about her day to day struggles
and happiness. When the novel begins, the main character who is known as Alice is just an ordinary
girl with teenager concerns. Alice is an innocent girl who falls into a group of kids headed into a

As kids get older they get exposed to so many new things. And that is what the novel is showing the
reader. The novel allows the reader to view how Alice grows up in 2 years and all the things she goes
through. Another important theme is difficulties of communication. Alice is never able to talk to
anyone about her feelings which is why she writes in a diary. Also drugs and alcohol are a reoccurring
theme because those are the two things that mess with Alice s life the most. Identity is also a main
theme because there is quite some soul searching and self indulgent whining in the novel. Alice
definitely has an almost non existent self esteem, so her sense of identity is determined by the people
she surrounds herself with. And the last theme that stands out more than others is lies and deceit. One
of them main ways Alice is able to pull off her shenanigans is because of a healthy dose of self
deception and some series denial. The whole time she is doing wrong things, she is lying to herself
and her loved

Canadian Identity
History has shaped Canada by molding essential components that represent Canada today, such as
Canadian identity, values, and society. However, even though everything in history has effects on the
present, there are major forces throughout the 1900s that have largely contributed in shaping Canada
today. This involves, the victory in Vimy Ridge, women s changing roles, and the growing economy
during 1920s. As a result, these forces that shaped Canada throughout the 1900s, determined Canada
today by molding key components that represent Canada.

Before WWI, women had limited job options with low pay, such as teaching, leaving many women
stay in their traditional roles as wives, mothers, and domestic workers. However, when men enlisted in
WWI and the war effort needed workers to make supplies, ships, tanks, bombs, etc, many women
found themselves doing the same jobs as men. When the men returned from the war, they took back
their jobs, but this caused many women to no longer be satisfied by playing their traditional roles. This
created consequences, were women fought for their right to vote, greater educational and job
opportunities, be able to hold jobs with higher power, and improved labour laws and health care. After
many challenges to get equal rights, most women were finally able to obtain a right to vote in 1919,
and gain entry to higher job opportunities while being considered as persons in 1929. Compare to
Canada today, there is one thing that has continued throughout the years, and that is the fight for
equality. However, the change is that women are no longer fighting for equal education and health
care, but equal pay and the ability to hold higher positions. For example, in 1921, Agnes Macphail was

Gun Control and the Bill of Rights Essay
George Mason, a co author of the Bill of Rights, said To disarm the people is the best and most
effectual way to enslave them If this is true, why would anyone try to ban firearms in the U.S? Guns
have been a part of American history since we declared independence from Britain in 1776. Many
people believe that removing weapons from the hands of citizens is the only way to stop criminals
from shooting down people at malls and kids at schools, but this is not the case. Outlawing guns is not
the answer for effectively reducing gun crime.

Murder by knives was first, followed by clubs, then strangulation. It seems that by banning guns,
people used other ways to kill. On the other hand, Switzerland s gun policy is very different than other
nations. It requires all men to go through militia training at age twenty and issue an assault rifle when
they complete it. Switzerland has the lowest gun crime rates in the world, despite giving everyone a
high powered, fully automatic firearm.
Another hot topic that politicians debate about is allowing assault rifles, or select fire guns (capable of
semi automatic or fully automatic fire),which have the ability to shoot rounds as long as you can hold
the trigger down, in the hand of American citizens. Currently, eight states have banned owning assault
weapons in some sense. Some may argue that these guns are overkill, and aren t practical for hunting
or self defense, whereas other firearms fill that position well. In some cases that might be true, but if
multiple intruders enter your home armed, a pistol with a low capacity clip may not suffice. Contrary
to popular belief, gun crime has dropped significantly over the past 20 years. Since 1993, violence
involving guns has gone down 49% according to Pew Research. The media is to blame for
sensationalizing shootings and with the internet s influence an argument that got out of hand can be

Group 1, Question C) One of the stories that I thought was mostly for entertainment was The Story of
Ong . From what I noticed was that in most of the stories it taught some sort of lesson or tells us why
things are the way they are. But in this story there wasn t really anything that we learned from it. For
example, in Damollale and the Water Baby at the end it says, Then the lake returned to its original
bed, but as it retreated it left water in all the depressions in the area. That is why there are many small
lakes in the mountains near Lake Tahoe, which is directly telling us what we need to know from

Euripides Portrayal Of Women
Euripides was one of the most well known playwrights of ancient Greece. He was known as a modern
playwright because he wrote with realism, and had a doubtful way of portraying the gods in his plays.
Euripides s plays had women as the main character because he had a sympathetic way of portraying
women. The women were mainly strong and are passionate in their motives for their actions. Although
Euripides is well known now, during ancient Greece Euripides wasn t an appreciated playwright.
When there were play performances men would be the audience since women weren t allowed to take
part in or watch the plays. So with the focus of women in his plays, he gave them a voice, which
would throw men off, mainly because they would be terrified if their wives did and said the same
things. Euripides supplied a philosophical thought to the women he has written about.
Euripides was not one for female stereotypes. He gave his female characters realistic reasons for their
behavior and while it the female characters actions, such as killing her offspring and killing their
husbands, is frowned upon in a patriarchal society, it was as if Euripides made a point to have men
stop viewing women under a passive light and give more thought on how women s thoughts. Because
Euripides partial understanding of women, he redefines beauty in his female character Helen, and has
her viewed as a beautiful woman with good intentions instead of a bad woman. The beauty of a

What Is The Similarities Between The Time Machine And Herland
The Oxford English Dictionary defines a genre as kind; sort; style , a particular style or category of
works of art (OED). Otherwise, a genre is the process of classification. In relation to The Time
Machine and Herland, the quest in each text is different. However, the quest embarked upon in each
novel has a starting point of order, follows through to disorder and lastly ends with order restored or a
new sense of harmony. Both texts are categorised as Utopian/Dystopian novels. Utopia is defined as
senses relating to an imaginary or perfect place . Dystopia is an imaginary place or condition in which
everything is as bad as possible (OED). In this essay I will discuss the quest in relation to The Time
Machine by H. G. Wells and Herland ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Time Machine and Herland are no exception. In The Time Machine, the Time Traveller develops
a romantic relationship with Weena. This text is also a medieval chivalric tale as it has the features of
a knightly fairytale. For example, the novel contains the quest, the hardships and the devotion to the
lady. We see the knight romance story when the Time Traveller saves Weena from drowning in a
shallow .The following day she gives him flowers to thank him: We passed each other flowers and she
kissed my hands. I did the same to hers (Wells, P38). This is a similar aspect to when the knight wins a
battle and the lady presents him with a hankie chef for gratitude. However, it has been questioned
whether Weena is female with it being said that she is sexually ambiguous. She is also childlike as
stated by the Time Traveller as he thinks that it is childish affection that made her cling to him (P 39).
In H. G. Wells: Prophet of Our Day, Vallentin reaffirms the idea of the romance in The Time Machine
stating that she was a greatly loving child wife to the Time Traveller (P 106). In Herland, love and
romance is in a more controlling way with hints later on of equality. The male protagonists see
themselves as the more dominant figures and the owners of their female companions because that is
what they are used in Victorian England. This causes dysfunction and distrustfulness within the quest
of the text as the female protagonists are used to being in control and dominant because they are not
usually in the presence of males. The male adventurers have a chauvinist view on what they will find
in Feminisia. A prime example of this within the text is when playboy Terry says the line Girls and
Girls and Girls (Gilman, Ch 1). The three males laugh at the idea of a society ran by women. They
believe that these women are going to be like the submissive Victorian women that they have in
England.

Examples Of Allegory In Beowulf
The Allegory of the Dragon in Beowulf
In the Book of the Apocalypse, Rome is represented by several allegories: the beast of the land, the
beast from the sea, the harlot, Babylon, and the dragon. The Beowulf poet also manipulates the dragon
allegory to represent Rome, but his dragon represents not Rome, pure and simple, but a hostile area of
the (former) Roman empire, the Romanized Britain or the Roman British .
There is increasing consensus among critics against Tolkien s views that the dragon is a different sort
of creature from the Grendel tribe (Gang 6) and that among the innumerable dragon stories there is
probably not one which we can declare to be really identical with that of Beowulf (Chambers 97). Of
course, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, there are several reasons for Beowulf s taking up of arms against the dragon: defense of the
country, vengeance, and punishment: With his live coals the fiery dragon had utterly destroyed all the
coastline and nation s impregnable fortress, the stronghold of that region; the warlike king, the prince
of the Wederas, planned to take revenge on him for this (2333 36).
Though the dragon is in many ways different from Grendel, he is in some ways very much like
Grendel: he too hates the Geats and humbles them (2318 19); he, too, harms the Geats and even
destroys the royal hall of Beowulf (2325 26), while Grendel is not allowed to approach Hrothgar s
gifstol (168 169). The dragon, like Grendel (166 167), is also a ruler of the land only during dark
nights (2210 11). Both have heathen associations: Grendel is heathen (852, 986); the dragon, though
not called heathen specifically by the poet, guards, however, the treasure of the heathen (2276 77,
2216).[17]
The poet indicates the quasi indigenous character of the dragon by saying that he has guarded the
treasure for some three hundred years (2278 79); in other words, he is not merely a foreign force like
Grendel Rome nor an intruder like the thief from the Germanic kingdom (2214 25). By limiting the
dragon s presence on the British soil to three hundred years, the poet seems to suggest that the British
themselves came from elsewhere as the Anglo Saxons

Understanding Disability Stereotyping And Popular...
UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY STEREOTYPING AND POPULAR MISCONCEPTIONS
ABOUT DISABILITY.
Having a physical disability is a stigmatised attribute that is usually associated with stereotypes of
incompetence. As a result of these stereotypes, individuals often experience economic and medical
disadvantages(Roeher Institute,1996). People with disability are less likely to hold a job because
employers tend to judge these individuals by their perceived limitations, rather than their actual
abilities and potential.
Evidently, the first thing that comes to mind when disability is mentioned is a wheelchair because of
the symbol that is used to represent it. Yet only 5% of disabled people do actually use wheelchairs.
Under the Equality Act 2010 (Great Britain). A person is considered to be disable if they have a
physical impairment which has a substantial and long term adverse effect on their ability to perform
normal day to day activities. Disability can be classified into two types: Physical impairment and
Mental impairments .
Physical impairments include anything from loss of a limb, sensory impairment(paralysis), blindness,
deafness and generally everything that alters physical appearance and performance of an individual.
Mental impairments include learning disabilities such as Down syndrome, Developmental disorders
such as Autism, Asperger, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia. Also mental issues such as OCD, Depression,

The Symptoms Of Jenny s Condition
Some of the symptoms of Jenny s condition was that she first kept a messy desk at school, in which
her teachers would complain about. She then began hiding her toys from her father and thus, became
very emotionally attached to them. After she was put on medication for her ADHD, she was having
troubles making simple decisions such as what to wear for the day, and had extreme troubles with
throwing away boxes, in which she justified that she knew they would come in handy for something
one day (34). Jenny began making excuses like this for other irrational hoarding behaviors, such as
keeping the original packaging for her toys because, she knew that an item would typically sell at a
higher price if it were in the original packaging (34). She had anxiety when she thought about losing
these types of items, and even had an emotional breakdown when her mother threw away all of her
toilet paper rolls. Once she became engaged, she began to become obsessed with wedding planning,
which then turned her office into a mess. Even after she had kids, she continued collecting things that
she believed were important, refusing to throw away anything, which only took over their whole
house. She would even constantly buy items off Ebay or Amazon to hoard. All of these dynamic
symptoms combined, described hoarding disorder, identified within the book, which is excessive
acquisition and difficultying discarding items, which results in extreme clutter in the living
environment. This is

An End Of Course Assessment
Students in eleventh grade are required to take an end of course assessment in social studies. Students
take United States History in eleventh grade and are required to pass at least one social studies end of
course assessment in order to graduate. The Standards of Learning Blueprint that lays out the structure
of the end of course assessment divulges thirteen out of sixty questions on the test are based on the
standards related to World War I (Virginia Department of Education, 2009). Being that this portion of
the assessment is heavily weighted on the test, it is crucial that students understand concepts, but also
master content and connections in regards to World War I. In order to ensure all students are able to
grasp content, and make connections, it is crucial to differentiate instruction. According to Tomlinson
(2008), differentiation is based upon creating a classroom in which all students are able to reach their
full potential, because students work and show mastery in the learning context in which they learn
best.
Since World War I is a crucial portion of the Virginia Standards of Learning end of course assessment,
teaching a comprehensive unit on World War I is crucial. Finding an Understanding by Design lesson
based on World War I allows for analysis of concepts and skills students need to be successful on the
assessment and in creating connections within the content. The Understanding by Design lesson on
World War I can be accessed by downloading the World War

Robber Barons Pros And Cons
Kassandra Haan
Mr. Rice
IB US
October, 2016
Robber Barons or Not? The 19th century, the industrial revolution. These were times times of new
manufacturing processes. The time of captains of the industries. Entrepreneurs, people who organize
and operate a business or businesses while taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do
so, dominated with wealth. However they ruled with social respect. These powerful men were
mistaken for robber barons, unscrupulous plutocrats that gain a fortune through ruthless means.
However, through proof of treatment to workers, their effect in politics, and their distribution of
wealth; entrepreneurs are not robber barons. The factory workers say that it s impossible to do
anything right. If

My Work And Dedication Of My Father Works At Dupont...
There were many different degrees to to choose from but pursing a degree in Accounting stood out to
me because there are so many different paths you can go on to where you want to be in life. So far, I
ve set many goals not only on the degree and jobs associated with it, but also goals for the years to
come in my life. Of course there will be a lot of responsibilities and hard work to come with this
major, but in the end hopefully all the hard work and dedication will pay out. I grew up in a small
town in West Virginia named Parkersburg where there were a decent amount of jobs but there were to
bigger companies in the area that pretty much made Parkersburg a suitable place to live. Those two
companies were DuPont Washington Works and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. My mother works at
the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and my father works at DuPont. Growing up she always told me
accountants made good money and also received great benefits because it was a government job. I
never really knew much about accounting or the business world until I took a business class and
accounting class in high school which taught me a lot because I got to practice accounting, ran a
business in a 9 week simulator, and have an internship with State Farm, Dan McPherson. It was safe
to say, I would be attending West Virginia University in pursuit of an accounting degree. Now fast
forward a couple months to where I am at now at West Virginia University where I am enrolled in

Nt1310 Unit 3 Penetration Testing
Our company is looking for security threats inside and outside their network. The best way to see what
our network is vulnerable to is to use penetration testing (pen testing) to find the leaks in and out of
our network. Penetration testing is a network security approach that simulates an attack from an
intruder trying to get unauthorized access to the infrastructure. With this type of testing the intent is to
discover flaws in the security settings of the system before they can be exploited. Information
Assurance Research Corporation (IARC) should conduct penetration testing on a regular basis, so we
have the ability to locate weaknesses in the hardware and software, check the security controls
currently established and determine if the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
HTML5 will also allow pen testers to review new scans, create new policies, and view scans from any
device on the scanner, which means the entire network will be secure. This magnificent security tool is
capable of providing any vulnerability within the IP address range, network or host located on the
network. Within the configuration and compliance auditing, it can be compared to the Security
Content Automation Protocol (SCAP), which is a method used to enable automated vulnerability
management (National Institute of Standards and Technology, 2016). Nessus will also ensure the
system is configured to be compliant within the security structure of Windows, Linux, Mac OS and
applications. One more feature included is the integration of patch management, which allows patch
information to be retrieved and to be included in the patch management report. Nessus will go one
step further and check to ensure that patches have been properly installed, will audit mobile device

Hadrian s Campaign Essay
Hadrian was born in Rome on Jan. 2, 76. The event of him becoming the new emperor of
Rome raised quite a bit of suspicion. It is said that his uncle, the previous ruler, adopted Hadrian while
on his death bed. There is some suspicion about this because all the other potential heirs for the
position were all mysteriously killed leaving Hadrian to take the throne. After his uncle died, Hadrian
took over as the new emperor of Rome.
During the time Hadrian took his place as a royal, Rome was involved in the Parthian
War. This war was between many parties fighting for Parthian. Hadrian, however, decided to take his
army out of the war and back out completely. During the war, many people were killed.
Yes, they were killed from battle, but they were also killed by the plague. The ... Show more content

Hadrian focused so much on the defensive side of things, that he solders training was becoming
unnecessary, and the efficiency of the armies started to decline. One of Hadrian s famous creations
was the Hadrian Wall. This was the defense barrier he built on the border between England and
Scotland.
Another significant event that took place during Hadrian s reign was a religious outbreak.
During his rule, Hadrian decided to restore Jerusalem. Through the process of restoring this lad he
built a temple to Jupiter. Jupiter, also known as Zeus, is the Roman god of the sky. Now this would
have been fine, but Hadrian chose to build this temple exactly where the Jewish temple once stood.
This is the reason for the Jewish outbreak. The Jewish outbreak lasted for three and a half years with
more than half a million people dead.
Overall Hadrian did not have much class when running the Roman empire. He started off rough with a
sketchy coronation. Then, once he took control chose to pull back his military forces completely
which seems a little coward like. Finally, the fact that he built a temple

The Apartheid Of South Africa Essay
South Africa, after experiencing the apartheid, is trying their best to overcome the apartheid. Now, the
country even has its own leader. He is Jacob Zuma. It is already his second term as a president.( News,
B. (2016, August 5)) The country went over a lot of things, and the history of democratic political
system is not very long for them.
English and Dutch colonized South Africa in the seventeenth century. After South Africa got its
independence from England, Afrikaner National Party became a majority. This was the result of two
groups trying to gain the most power, and the Afrikaner National Party won. After the independence
and apartheid they experienced, there was the first non racial elections in 1994. After that,
parliamentary republic was elected after replacing constitution of Interim Constitution in 1197,
February 4th. After the independence, South Africa tried its best to be non racist and get out of the
apartheid they struggled. South Africa elected its own president, and aimed to be democratic. Even
though South Africa now is not fully settled democratic system, they are still struggling and trying
hard to be fully democratic. (The History of Apartheid in South Africa.)
South Africa once again, tried its best and still trying to be a democratic country. However, the second
largest party, DA, was under the control of apartheid even though the party opposed apartheid laws.
That is why DA changed its route to be more conventional liberal, which opposed ANC.(

Fuzzy Thinking Analysis
In IT Foundations, I was assigned by Mrs. Baumaster to watch the video Fuzzy Thinking. The speaker
in this video is an Astrophysicist by the name of Neil deGrasse Tyson. In the video, Fuzzy Thinking he
talked about many things like what was wrong with the misspellings of the word Cat and about his
choice between hiring two workers. The video did not seem very interesting at first but as I watched it,
the video got more and more interesting. Tyson is a very good presenter in the video because he made
it interesting and fun to listen to him. All in all, this video was a great way to get his message out on
how people think. I answered 5 questions that Mrs. Baumaster asked about the video Fuzzy Thinking.
Fuzzy Thinking is when people are not thinking straight. I know this is correct because right after he
said fuzzy thinking he told the audience the definition of it. The misspelling of the word cat is a very
complex question. One misspelling is spelled as XQT and the other is spelled as KAT but they are
considered equally as wrong even though one sounds like cat and the other does not. Tyson s is an
astrophysicist which is similar to being an astronomer. Astrophysicists study the physics of space. I
think this is a very cool job and it would also be very interesting as well as fun. The two job
candidates were very different from one another. The first job candidate had knowledge of the
building because they studied architecture beforehand. They knew the spire is 155ft

Thoracic duct A precise understanding and knowledge of the anatomy of the thoracic duct is essential to avoid injury to the duct during surgical procedures performed within the chest cavity. The thoracic duct is the largest lymphatic vessel, with an hourly flow of lymph estimated at 1.38mL/kg of body weight.(16) Arising from the upper pole of the cisterna chili at the level of L2 vertebra, the thoracic duct enters the chest through the aortic hiatus in the diaphragm. The duct ascends to the right side of the midline until the level of T5, where it then crosses over to the left side. It then continues to ascend adjacent to the left posterolateral margin of the esophagus. At the level of C7 transverse process, the duct takes an upward and lateral course to a level approximately 3cm above the clavicle. It then crosses behind the left common carotid artery, the vagus nerve and the left internal jugular vein. The duct then turns sharply downward where it crosses anterior to the first part of the left subclavian artery. Most commonly, the duct drains into the central venous system at the junction of left internal jugular vein and left subclavian vein. Drainage into the left sided central neck veins is seen in more than 90% of patients, with the remaining cases draining into a right sided central vein or have a bilateral central drainage. Essay On Loyalty And Loyalty Customer Satisfaction And Loyalty Zeithaml and Bitner (2000) defined customer satisfaction as the customers evaluation of a product or service in terms of whether that product or service has met their needs and expectations . Therefore, satisfaction is a consumer s post purchase evaluation and affective response to the overall product or service experience. In other words, what consumer perceives after a product or service consumption determines his/her satisfaction. Many researches have concluded that satisfaction can determine the customer loyalty. Compared to the United States, the United Kingdom is quite small in fact it is approximately the size of New England. Despite being diminutive in size, there is layer upon layer of cultures and history. Each wave of migrations and invasions brought different cultures and added to what is now modern day the United Kingdom. The Romans left their numerous long roads, whose names became lost in time since there was no written records or inscribed sources. Built by the Roman army and long after they returned home, their roads survived, and some routes are in use today. The Normans built fortified castles, which was a new concept since before that time there was none in the United Kingdom. One example is Restormel Castle, which is in a circular in shape as well as surrounded by an entrenched circular ditch for protection against attacks. The Vikings left parts of their language in the names of the towns and villages, such as names ending in by are where Vikings settled first. Places ending in Thorpe are their secondary settlements, and places that end in ton is for town or city. D. The Saxons replaced the Roman stone buildings with wooden ones. • 5. Of Mice And Men Book Report Essay The fiction book that I chose for my summer reading was Of Mice and Men . When I was given the list of fiction books, I went on good reads dot com and looked up all the books on the fiction list. Of Mice and Men really caught my eye because it was a book about two friends going through tough times, which always has a deeper meaning of friendship. Once I chose Of Mice and Men I picked it up at my local library. The book was exceptionally simple to read and my understanding of every page was straightforward. It only took me a week to read. Prior to reading the book I knew it would be about two migrant workers that were struggling with making ends meet in hard times (Goodread.com). George is a tiny, lean and sharp featured man who takes care of his friend Lennie (Steinbeck). To keep things simple this book is about two friends that need each other to survive in a time where no one cares about anybody. They flee a town because of Lennie s actions and end up finding work on a ranch, where they are introduced to many new characters (Steinbeck). Time gets suspenseful at the ranch and in the end Lennie s gets into more trouble and ultimately dies in the end (Steinbeck). My favorite character in Of Mice and Men was George because he is a genuine character who is smart and takes care of Lennie with his mental disability. • 6. Comparing The Sea Devil, And The Sea Devil And Edward s Rocks Without the ocean, life as humankind knows it would be impossible. The ocean has provided the man a bountiful amount of resources. It is easy to think that the big blue is man s friend. Though with ninety five percent of the ocean unexplored, it is easy to think that it is more than sandy beaches and volleyball. Stories such as The Sea Devil and Edward s Rocks express the idea that the sea, as beautiful as it is, can also be equally as powerful and mysterious. Though stories share similarities they also have differences between their protagonist, conflict, and settings. The two stories have many similarities though their locations differ. Both take place at night in a marine area, with both of the protagonists on a pursuit. and Though they take place in different decades the stories both occur at night. In The Sea Devil, the night is described as Black as a witch s cat (Gordon, n.d., p. 2). However, unlike Edward s Rocks, The Sea Devil takes place in a warm Florida bay in late September, whereas Edward s Rocks takes place in a quiet fishing village of Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland (Ritson, 1997, p. 300). Edward s Rocks describes George as a hardy fisherman who hunts for seals for a living with his father and two brothers. While George and his brothers and father are searching for seals the story says that the sea was ominous, and... felt uneasy (Ritson, 1997, p. 305), while the protagonist in The Sea Devil night is described as Dark and silent (Gordon, n.d., p.1).Even though both the stories take place in coastal locations the two environments have their own unique features, such as the warm Florida bay in The Sea Devil , where s Edward s Rocks was more of an aggressive northern marine environment. The conflict in the two stories both can be considered as a person vs environment scenario. The conflict in Edward s Rocks that George faced was a combination of the weather and navigational issues. While George his father and brothers are out at sea they used a compass to help them navigate to Pimming Islands, where they planned to hunt seals. • 8. Futility In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet William Shakespeare romantic tragedy Romeo Juliet, a play written during the period of 1594 1595, contains many themes enabling it to be relevant to audiences today. This is because human nature has remained constant since that period. This play is an Elizabethan misfortune set in the 13th century England, which conveys the story of two young star crossed lovers who cannot be together as their families are embroiled in a feud. In Romeo Juliet, Shakespeare uses this futility to symbolize the themes of the play such as the individual against the society and also the meaning of gender during these times and how it affected the play as a whole. These themes in Romeo Juliet make the audience aware that the play does not have a use by date. The individual versus society alludes to the tension or drama which ensues when an individual does not like to live inside the confinements of their culture and society. Much of Romeo Juliet includes these lovers struggles against open and social establishments that either unequivocally or verifiably restrict the presence of their affection. Why is our performance improved when you exercise with your friend, and impaired when you are alone? These processes have been studied for more than a century not only on people, but even on animals, like cockroaches or chickens. The first scientist who explained that phenomenon was Floyd Allport (1920). Allport based his conclusions on Tripplet s (1889) observations, and termed it social facilitation, what means that performance of simple or well learned tasks is improved in presence of others; and social inhibition which relates to a deterioration of difficult tasks in presence of passive audience (Hogg Vaughan, 2008). This essay will describe and evaluate key theories such as Drive Theory, Evaluation Apprehension Theory and Distraction Conflict Theory, which explain mechanisms of social facilitation and social inhibition. But firstly it is important to refer to the observations and experiment of Norman Triplett (1889), from who all the research began. The first person who wanted to find a reason for improved or decreased performance of people in presence of others was Norman Triplett (1889). He observed that cyclists race faster against each other than alone, and in order to confirm his inferences, Triplett decided to conduct the first social psychology experiment. • 12. The Description Of Yahweh From Exodus 34 Essay The description of Yahweh found in Exodus 34:5 7 is a significant and influential passage from the Old Testament text which is foundational for biblical theology, since it provides the most complete description of both the name and the nature of God found anywhere within the scriptural canon. Its significance can is noted by the fact that this passage is quoted and referred back to at least eleven times throughout the Old Testament including in the books of Jeremiah, Joel, Numbers, Nehemiah, Lamentations, Daniel, and 1 Kings.. In order to fully understand the meaning and purpose of this passage, several other passages must be considered which serve both as anticipatory texts and texts which provide contextual meaning. One such text is found in the thirty third chapter of Exodus. The passage from Exodus 34 is especially significant as many characteristics of Yahweh are revealed to Moses by Yahweh Himself. Another important aspect of this passage is its poeticism and the fact that it reveals the innate characteristics of God in such a way that demonstrates literary beauty and rhythm. Many phrases and expressions in this passage are presented in pairs. This is augmented by the fact that this passage, in the broadest sense, serves to emphasize the two aspects of God which are most basic. These two aspects are His love and His justice. He is famous for many short stories, many taking place during the Jazz Age and one specifically is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Bruccoli 1). It is a work on which a baby is born an old man and ages backwards. Fitzgerald wrote that he was inspired to write it by a remark made by Mark Twain: It is a pity that the best part of life comes at the beginning, and the worst part at the end (Lanham 1). In this short story no one attempts to discover the reason for Benjamin s condition or find a cure. Throughout his life he battles society and the social norms of the world. INTRODUCTION: The ability to survive and reproduce by living organisms is constantly being tested by its external environment. Organisms those are unable to cope up with these changing external factors, face extinction. Over the years, species have evolved with the changing environmental conditions and have incurred adaptations to suit their existence in their environment. Hence, the process of evolution, adaptation and extinction of species has been natural over time. This does not affect the ecosystem much because nature on its own has an ability to compensate for its losses and changes that are natural. This is where we, Humans come in. Humans by instinct have a tendency to modify, to exploit their environment to suit their needs. That is, more than adapting to the environment, their rate of converting the environment to suit requirements is incomparably higher. This reverse phenomenon is what causes the depletion of other species which are unable to adapt to the unnatural, fast changes. Nature is ineffectual in recompensing for these artificial changes which further increases the rate of extinction of species resulting in ecosystem imbalance. The scientists have predicted that we are presently undergoing the sixth mass extinction on the history of earth, mainly due to human activities and their effects. Human perception of their ... Civil Disobedience is remarkably effective without the violence that many had thought necessary. Several famous examples include the Salt March of Mahatma Gandhi, the Civil Rights movement of Martin Luther King Jr., and even the sit ins of the factory workers during the industrial revolution. What also makes this novel interesting is that it s claimed to be taken from an actual diary. And because of that it caused a sensation back in 1971 when it was first published. Although some people believe it is not taken from an actual diary, still to this day it doesn t have an author: it is written by Anonymous. The plot of this novel is based around a 15 year old girl who starts writing in a diary about her day to day struggles and happiness. When the novel begins, the main character who is known as Alice is just an ordinary girl with teenager concerns. Alice is never able to talk to anyone about her feelings which is why she writes in a diary. Also drugs and alcohol are a reoccurring theme because those are the two things that mess with Alice s life the most. Identity is also a main theme because there is quite some soul searching and self indulgent whining in the novel. Alice definitely has an almost non existent self esteem, so her sense of identity is determined by the people she surrounds herself with. And the last theme that stands out more than others is lies and deceit. One of them main ways Alice is able to pull off her shenanigans is because of a healthy dose of self deception and some series denial. Before WWI, women had limited job options with low pay, such as teaching, leaving many women stay in their traditional roles as wives, mothers, and domestic workers. However, when men enlisted in WWI and the war effort needed workers to make supplies, ships, tanks, bombs, etc, many women found themselves doing the same jobs as men. When the men returned from the war, they took back their jobs, but this caused many women to no longer be satisfied by playing their traditional roles. This created consequences, were women fought for their right to vote, greater educational and job opportunities, be able to hold jobs with higher power, and improved labour laws and health care. After many challenges to get equal rights, most women were finally able to obtain a right to vote in 1919, and gain entry to higher job opportunities while being considered as persons in 1929. Compare to Canada today, there is one thing that has continued throughout the years, and that is the fight for equality. However, the change is that women are no longer fighting for equal education and health care, but equal pay and the ability to hold higher positions. Gun Control and the Bill of Rights Essay George Mason, a co author of the Bill of Rights, said To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them If this is true, why would anyone try to ban firearms in the U.S? Guns have been a part of American history since we declared independence from Britain in 1776. Many people believe that removing weapons from the hands of citizens is the only way to stop criminals from shooting down people at malls and kids at schools, but this is not the case. It requires all men to go through militia training at age twenty and issue an assault rifle when they complete it. Switzerland has the lowest gun crime rates in the world, despite giving everyone a high powered, fully automatic firearm. Another hot topic that politicians debate about is allowing assault rifles, or select fire guns (capable of semi automatic or fully automatic fire),which have the ability to shoot rounds as long as you can hold the trigger down, in the hand of American citizens. Currently, eight states have banned owning assault weapons in some sense. Some may argue that these guns are overkill, and aren t practical for hunting or self defense, whereas other firearms fill that position well. In some cases that might be true, but if multiple intruders enter your home armed, a pistol with a low capacity clip may not suffice. Contrary to popular belief, gun crime has dropped significantly over the past 20 years. Since 1993, violence involving guns has gone down 49% according to Pew Research. • 33. Euripides Portrayal Of Women Euripides was one of the most well known playwrights of ancient Greece. He was known as a modern playwright because he wrote with realism, and had a doubtful way of portraying the gods in his plays. Euripides s plays had women as the main character because he had a sympathetic way of portraying women. The women were mainly strong and are passionate in their motives for their actions. Although Euripides is well known now, during ancient Greece Euripides wasn t an appreciated playwright. When there were play performances men would be the audience since women weren t allowed to take part in or watch the plays. So with the focus of women in his plays, he gave them a voice, which would throw men off, mainly because they would be terrified if their wives did and said the same things. Euripides supplied a philosophical thought to the women he has written about. Euripides was not one for female stereotypes. He gave his female characters realistic reasons for their behavior and while it the female characters actions, such as killing her offspring and killing their husbands, is frowned upon in a patriarchal society, it was as if Euripides made a point to have men stop viewing women under a passive light and give more thought on how women s thoughts. Otherwise, a genre is the process of classification. In relation to The Time Machine and Herland, the quest in each text is different. However, the quest embarked upon in each novel has a starting point of order, follows through to disorder and lastly ends with order restored or a new sense of harmony. Both texts are categorised as Utopian/Dystopian novels. Utopia is defined as senses relating to an imaginary or perfect place . Dystopia is an imaginary place or condition in which everything is as bad as possible (OED). In this essay I will discuss the quest in relation to The Time Machine by H. G. Wells and Herland ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Time Machine and Herland are no exception. In The Time Machine, the Time Traveller develops a romantic relationship with Weena. This text is also a medieval chivalric tale as it has the features of a knightly fairytale. For example, the novel contains the quest, the hardships and the devotion to the lady. We see the knight romance story when the Time Traveller saves Weena from drowning in a shallow .The following day she gives him flowers to thank him: We passed each other flowers and she kissed my hands. I did the same to hers (Wells, P38). This is a similar aspect to when the knight wins a battle and the lady presents him with a hankie chef for gratitude. However, it has been questioned whether Weena is female with it being said that she is sexually ambiguous. She is also childlike as stated by the Time Traveller as he thinks that it is childish affection that made her cling to him (P 39). In H. G. Wells: Prophet of Our Day, Vallentin reaffirms the idea of the romance in The Time Machine stating that she was a greatly loving child wife to the Time Traveller (P 106). In Herland, love and romance is in a more controlling way with hints later on of equality. The male protagonists see themselves as the more dominant figures and the owners of their female companions because that is what they are used in Victorian England. This causes dysfunction and distrustfulness within the quest of the text as the female protagonists are used to being in control and dominant because they are not usually in the presence of males. The male adventurers have a chauvinist view on what they will find in Feminisia. A prime example of this within the text is when playboy Terry says the line Girls and Girls and Girls (Gilman, Ch 1). The three males laugh at the idea of a society ran by women. They believe that these women are going to be like the submissive Victorian women that they have in England. ... • 36. Examples Of Allegory In Beowulf The Allegory of the Dragon in Beowulf In the Book of the Apocalypse, Rome is represented by several allegories: the beast of the land, the beast from the sea, the harlot, Babylon, and the dragon. The Beowulf poet also manipulates the dragon allegory to represent Rome, but his dragon represents not Rome, pure and simple, but a hostile area of the (former) Roman empire, the Romanized Britain or the Roman British . There is increasing consensus among critics against Tolkien s views that the dragon is a different sort of creature from the Grendel tribe (Gang 6) and that among the innumerable dragon stories there is probably not one which we can declare to be really identical with that of Beowulf (Chambers 97). Of course, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, there are several reasons for Beowulf s taking up of arms against the dragon: defense of the country, vengeance, and punishment: With his live coals the fiery dragon had utterly destroyed all the coastline and nation s impregnable fortress, the stronghold of that region; the warlike king, the prince of the Wederas, planned to take revenge on him for this (2333 36). Though the dragon is in many ways different from Grendel, he is in some ways very much like Grendel: he too hates the Geats and humbles them (2318 19); he, too, harms the Geats and even destroys the royal hall of Beowulf (2325 26), while Grendel is not allowed to approach Hrothgar s gifstol (168 169). The dragon, like Grendel (166 167), is also a ruler of the land only during dark nights (2210 11). Both have heathen associations: Grendel is heathen (852, 986); the dragon, though not called heathen specifically by the poet, guards, however, the treasure of the heathen (2276 77, 2216).[17] The poet indicates the quasi indigenous character of the dragon by saying that he has guarded the treasure for some three hundred years (2278 79); in other words, he is not merely a foreign force like Grendel Rome nor an intruder like the thief from the Germanic kingdom (2214 25). By limiting the dragon s presence on the British soil to three hundred years, the poet seems to suggest that the British themselves came from elsewhere as the Anglo Saxons ...
