Background Information The red panda, classified as Ailurus fulgens, is a mammal and the only living
member of its family, Ailuridae. Red pandas are native to high altitude temperate forests, such as the
eastern Himalayas and Burma, as well as parts of Nepal, India, and Tibet. The subspecies Ailurus
fulgens fulgens can be found in Nepal and India, while the other, Ailurus fulgens styani, is native to
China. There are few differences between the two subspecies; Ailurus fulgens styani is slightly larger

China, while the first westerner to document the species was French zoologist Frédéric Cuvier in
