The
Digestive
System
The Mouth -
The mouth breaks down the food
with saliva which creates a moist
lump called bolus, the saliva breaks
down any starch and or enzymes
present in the food.
The Esophagus -
The esophagus is the tube in
which food is transported to your
stomach. It does this by the
nerves surrounding the
esophogeal tissue senses the
bolus' presence which triggers
peristalsis which is a series of
defined muscular contractions,
this propels the bolus to the
stomach.
The Stomach -
The stomach receives food from
the esophagus. The stomach
walls pounds the bolus until its
broken into chunks, next, the
stomach walls secrete acids and
enzyme rich fluids these fluids
start to dissolve the food and
breaks down its proteins. After 3
hours the bolus is now broken
down into a liquid called chyme.
The Small Intestine -
As the stomach is now finished with its
process, the liver sends bile to the gall
bladder which is secreted into the first
portion of the small intestine called the
duodenum. Here, it breaks down all the
fats so they can be easily digested by the
pancreatic and intestinal juices, the
enzyme-rich juices break down the fat
molecules into fatty acids and glycerol for
easier absorption into the body. The
enzymes also carry out the final
deconstruction of proteins into amino
The Small Intestine
cont'd -
This happens in the lower regions of the
small intestine, the jejunum and the ileum,
which are coated in millions of tiny
projections called villi. These create a
surface area to maximize absorption of
the molecules and to transfer these
nutrients into the blood stream. The blood
takes them on their final journey, to feed
the bodies organs and tissues.
The Large Intestine -
Now the food that has no more nutrients
left in them for the body to absorb such as
water, fiber and dead cells are taken to
the colon / large intestine. The body
drains out any remaining fluid through the
intestinal wall, whats left is a soft mass
called stool.
The Rectum-
The colon now squeezes the stool into a
pouch called the rectum where nerves
senses it expanding and tells the body
when to expel of the waste.
The Anus -
Lastly after such a long process the stool
exits through the anus.
Why will you limit your
fat intake ?
Even though our bodies can gain
nutrients from fat I will still limit my intake
because I might overwork my body by
trying to break down all of that fat which
would lead to my body storing more fat
than it should and I will become obese
over time.
