2. Locker Searches Persuasive Essay
Imagine waking up to your blaring alarm clock and getting up to brush your teeth and eat breakfast.
As you get dressed you realize something it s Monday morning and you simply cannot go to school
because you are too afraid. 120,000 kids across the country feel this way every morning. They are
afraid to go to school because they may possibly lose their life to an irresponsible child or teen with a
gun. Locker searches can help these thousands of children and teens to feel safe. Clearly, the safety
and well being of students in America should be the number one priority when considering policies for
locker searches. Everyday 100,000 students altogether in every grade bring guns, knives, and drugs
onto school grounds. Usually children don t

3. Wisdom In Plato s Apology
Ignorance isn t something that someone inherits from the moment they are born. Humans do not enter
the world with the wisdom to make the correct choices in life, but they do gain the ability to acquire
wisdom through teaching, learning and learning from their mistakes. This lack of wisdom, this
inherent ignorance is exactly why there has been a struggle since the beginning of man. According to
Plato, this is the best thing for human life is wisdom. Plato s Socrates indicates that wisdom is the
acknowledgement of ignorance. This statement may be hard to prove as true. In the Apology, Socrates
says that What is probable, gentlemen, is the fact that the god is wise and that his oracular response
meant that human wisdom is worth little or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socrates look like he is overshadowing his own ignorance as some kind of wisdom . Socrates actual
quote indicates that he knew when others were ignorant, but merely thought they were knowledgeable.
He simply never made the mistakes of either by overestimating his extremely limited knowledge of or
really underestimating his actual knowledge. That made him a lifelong learner and wiser than those
who thought they knew what they did not know. This goes back to the argument that Plato makes that
taking a risk with your wisdom whether it s ignorant or not is worth more than sitting there and
basically looking stupid. In comparison of today s culture would it make any sense the youth holds the
majority of ignorance more than past generation I would bet to say that Plato would agree with this
statement. Most of the youth are preoccupied by social media and electronic devices that they never
have the time anymore to look up from their phone and hold a full conversation. The toxic
combination of government lacking public education, extremely unprepared curriculum to
unmotivated and unambitious student have produced a generation of young people ignorant of the
fundamental parts of life. They have been taught to feel rather than think critically. It draws back to
my point that when you think you know something that you do not know, you rest content

What did you learn about the character or nature of God?
Zechariah: 1 5 the Lord will destroy the enemy of Israel. Those who are opposed to Israel are always

When God stretches out His hand and shakes the nations, it is in the utmost wrath. The only time that
the worldly people will serve the people of God, is when Jesus reigns as King, and His people as His

5. Mainstream Culture and Media after the World War II
After the Second World War, America experienced an economic boom, which has taken the country a
step further towards the ideal capitalistic society. In its early developmental stages, the capitalist mode
of production prolonged the Marxist discourse on constant class struggle as it was primarily criticized
in terms of social inequalities. During post war years, the initial focus of the discourse has shifted to
Frankfurt School criticism of culture industry, where the standardization and commodification of
cultural spheres became one of the major defects of the capitalistic system. The notion of class
struggle shifted as well, to the clash of high and low cultural forms. Also known as authentic
expression versus standardized product of cultural industry. Most recently, the discourse has gone
through another important metamorphosis that has made advertising industry and consumerism the
main forces, shaping hegemonic culture of mainstream media. The good old notion of the class
struggle is currently regarded as the battle between corporate businesses and rebel oppositional forces.
However, even though the subject matter of the Marxist struggle has changed through time, the very
quintessential nature of capitalistic mode of production remained unchanged, for it is profit driven and
turns all cultural spheres into mass marketed commodities. Within the domain of cultural industry, the
notions of authenticity and resistance become utopian, illusionary and fake; social

7. Hicok And Terrell Summary
An important aspect about the readings from Hicok (2000) and Terrell (1999) is that the two of them
were focusing on minority students, who first language is not English. Information about the level of
reading and knowledge about phonemics makes a great difference to understand the type of population
that the researchers were working on.
One thing that I would like that Hicok (2000) share with the readers was to explain the meaning of
ESL B2 students. On page 3, the author mentioned that there were 22 seventh grade students in three
different sciences classes who were ESL B2. I assume that B2 could be Block 2 if the school have its
school year by block. However, that information is not available in the researcher s paper. Hicok
(2000) mentioned the use of quiz and tests as part for describing the qualitative data that the author
was gathering, however, there is no report on this paper about the tests scores of the students. The
author said that more time is needed to analyze the quantitative data about tests and scores.
Regarding ethics, I think that both authors failed in protecting the confidentiality of the students. First,
both studies have been done at Fairfax County (VA) Public Schools District (Hicok, 2000; Terrell,
1999). By knowing the school district, it will be easy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Jazz in a dance form, however, originates from the dances of Africans when they were brought to
America on slave ships. This dance form developed alongside jazz music in New Orleans in the early
1900s. Jazz incorporated unique moves, elaborate footwork, large leaps, rapid turns, and imaginative
improvisation to bring an energetic and entertaining experience. Jazz dance requires the foundation of
classical ballet to embody balance and agility. Jazz dance is viewed in the spotlight with movies, on
stage performances, and in urban areas of the streets and clubs. The transformation of jazz dance into
dance theatre and the important role of professional techniques and choreography, created modern jazz
dance . Beginning in the 1930s and continuing through the 1960s, Jazz dance transformed from its
original form into a theatre focused performance form of dance that required a highly trained dancer.
Eventually these highly trained dancers performed a specific set of movements, which differed greatly
from the original form of dance that started in New Orleans in the 1900s. Also during this time period
jazz dance was profoundly influenced by Caribbean and other Latin American dance

Chapter 7: 2. How do data from qualitative research differ from data in quantitative research? The
difference in data from qualitative research and data from quantitative research is found in their root
words, quality and quantity. Qualitative research data is the opinions of a certain group. This research
also captures the why, would, and how the target audience react to certain issues, situations, and/or

Quantitative research data is truly about numbers, statistics. Therefore, the researchers have to make

Through observation, the data is collected at the exact moment it happens. Observation is less biasing
on one s behavior rather questioning. There are disadvantages of observation as well. The observer
must be where the event will take place in order to observe. This action at times is hard to predict.
Observation is also slow, experience, and time consuming. When observing for the purpose of data
collection, observation is difficult as it relates to one s intentions attitude, opinion, or preference. The
circumstance under which a case can be made for observation is as follows: A parent is interested in
observing his or her child in school or in class. On the day the parent is in the class, the child may not
demonstrated the said unacceptable behavior in front of the parent. Therefore, the child not
demonstrating the behavior causes the parent to schedule a return visit to the classroom. The
additional day or days the parent is at the school or in the class are days they are not at work. When
the parent is not at work there is room for a domino effect of things occurring, like the parent not
getting paid for not working.

Sex workers attributions and systematic play in society have been explored throughout several
centuries of global narration. Sex workers have always been an entity throughout history, seen as both
symbols of beauty as well as patrons of Satan. The sex worker is not stagnant to one specific gender,
but typically has been demonstrated as a female with little identification or recognition in the within
modern day. Throughout the course of this semester we have explored examples of how sex work and
sex workers are documented within different cultures; along with the western perspective of sex in
relation to their country and their global position. The western perspective of sex work and the
perception of sex work in other nations have both parallels and opposing ideology of this type of
labor. This conflicting philosophy towards sex work has caused internal and external conflict in
certain countries. Yet, today it is clear how western influence has inserted itself into many cultures.
The traditional, political, social and religious beliefs of countries are being permeated with western
philosophy. This is and has created a divide amongst the native people of these nations; creating a
clash between traditional and western ideology. The division of western ideology and traditional belief
is particularly evident within Southern India, specifically focusing on sex workers. Sex workers in

16. Cultural Characteristics Of The Hispanic And Latin...
Culture is a learned system of knowledge, behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, values, and norms that is
shared by a group of people. (71) People learn their culture by those that raise them and by those that
they grow up with, I belong to only one culture which is the Hispanic/Latino Culture. Hispanics are
often defined as people from any country that is spanish speaker in Latin America. Us hispanics and
Latin Americans come from diverse social, economic, and geographic backgrounds making us all
different depending on our family heritage and national origin. However, there s some cultural
similarities that tend to bring our diverse backgrounds together. One of the most common cultural
characteristics of Hispanic and Latin American culture is the spanish language. Hispanic families
often teach their children spanish as a way of passing down their heritage and culture, this is what has
helped revive the spanish language around the globe. Food is also one of the most common cultural
characteristics in the hispanic/latino culture like tortillas, tamales, tacos and salsa. Parties are also one
of the most common characteristics, everyone knows hispanics like to party a lot like my family if it s
someone s birthday on tuesday we ll cook invite everyone to just have a small celebration but and at
the end it turns out into a big party even though we already have one plan for saturday to actually
celebrate it. My family like most Hispanics and Latin Americans value family, it is not uncommon for
us to have three generations to live in the same household or nearby each other. Like my family, I live
with my great grandma, grandma, my mom, my uncles, my aunt and my little brother, I also have my
cousins living in the next street, which is what I like because they just come over and it s like a family
gathering every weekend. Sometimes we do get annoyed because we see each other all the time but I
don t regret having this type of family. From what I experience with my non hispanic friends is that
sometimes there s no one in their house and it s just quiet and lonely compare to my house, a lot of my
non hispanic friends like to be at my house because of how loud and crazy it gets. I describe my

Whether it be elite athletes or weekend warriors, all athletes have experienced muscle tightness that
impacted their athletic performance. I wanted to investigate whether instrument assisted soft tissue
mobilization (IASTM) was more effective at reducing hamstring muscle tightness than foam rolling in
high school athletes. Most high school athletes work very hard at practice and in the weight room and
therefore, hamstring muscle tightness is very common. I chose the high school population because I
want to work in the high school setting following graduation. I wanted to investigate if IASTM
techniques could be more effective in the high school to reduce lower extremity muscle soreness than
foam rolling. The case series by Baker, Nasypany, Seegmiller Baker (2013) investigated the
effectiveness of IASTM for treatment of hamstring tissue extensibility dysfunction. Tissue
extensibility dysfunction (TED) includes ROM limitations during standing flexion test, sit and reach
test, passive and active straight leg hip flexion and 90/90 active knee extension test (Baker et.all). The
participants in this study consisted of three collegiate athletes who can had long lasting tightness in the
lower extremities, and exhibited hamstring TED. All patients had baseline active range motion

Single parent vs. two parent homes and the effect it has on their child s viability, intimacy and conflict
in their intimate relationships.
Introduction
Several years ago mothers normally stayed in the home with their children while the fathers took on
the role as sole provider. Family life has changed dramatically over the years. Most families now
being dual income families where both the mother and father work, today it is much more common to
see a child being raised by an outside caregiver or a single parent than it was just 40 years ago.
Although this is more widely accepted than it once was, what are the effects on the children? Does the
family structure make a difference in a how a child grows up and adapts to the world? Furthermore
does is effect their future intimate relationships with other people as adults?
Terms/Definitions
Within this paper the are key terms that have been identified as the following:
Single Parent homes are defined as families in which either the father or mother is absent because of
divorce, marital separation, out of wedlock pregnancy, or death (Greenberg, 2002: 329).
Marriage: a social construct in the form of a formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized
by law, by which they become husband and wife.
Parenting styles: parenting behaviors and attitudes that se the emotional climate of parent child
interactions

21. Karl Marx, Commodity Fetishism, An Objective, Valuable For...
To begin with I can t but mention that without assessing(considering, evaluating) Commodity
Fetishism both from the points of view of the philosophers of the past and economists and
businessmen of the present it s not an easy task to investigate the subject.
According to Karl Marx Commodity Fetishism is the perception of the social relationships involved in
production as economic relationships among the money and commodities exchanged in market trade .
In simple words it s the cult of the things selected and providing them with super valuation.
Commodity Fetishism transforms abstract, subjective aspects of economic value into real, objective,
valuable for people things.
Let me say a few words about the human nature. Each of us is material. We are sure we need more
than we really need to survive. That s probably, the main reason why socialism was unable to compete
with capitalism, especially former Soviet republics closed for bright, new, modern or brand new trade
marks. Big and small stuff becomes an integral part and an accompaniment(a supplement) to a
personality.
Speaking about the effects of Commodity Fetishism I should emphasize that they are not confined to
the sphere of production but permeate every sphere of social life. Social relationships become the
property of things and the form of false consciousness concealing real conditions.
The global effect of commodity fetishism is that we have become the society of consumers. We have
reached the freedom for but not

musculoskeletal system, cranio and maxillofacial structures, hand, extremities, breast and trunk, and
external genitalia Plastic surgery is divided into two different categories cosmetic surgery and
reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery is focused on enhancing people s appearance.
Improving aesthetic appeal, symmetry, and proportion are the key goals. Cosmetic surgery can be
performed on all areas of the head, neck, and body. Because the treated areas function properly,
cosmetic surgery is elective. Cosmetic surgery is practiced by doctors from ... Show more content on

If you attend a traditional allopathic medical school, you will earn a Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree.
Alternatively, if you attend an osteopathic medical school, which places more emphasis on the
musculoskeletal system and preventative medicine, you will earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
(D.O.) degree.
All physicians must earn a license in order to practice medicine in the United States. If you are an
M.D., you need to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). If you are a
D.O., you must pass the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam (COMLEX). The
USMLE and COMLEX consist of three parts and test candidates on how well they apply basic science
concepts to the practice of medicine.
After you become a licensed physician, you have two options for plastic surgery training. You can
complete three years in a general surgery residency followed by a 3 year plastic surgery residency, or
you can complete a 6 year integrated residency that includes both types of training. During your
general surgery training, you complete clinical rotations in different types of surgery, such as
abdominal, breast, pediatric, trauma, cardiothoracic and neurological surgery.
Your plastic surgery training will include further rotations in areas like cosmetic, hand, reconstructive,
laser, maxillofacial, otolaryngology and oculoplastic

24. Clothing In Eastern Christianity
When referring to clerical wear, it crosses over a very large spectrum, even in the year 1980s. Clerical
wear, also known as nun, priest or ministers wear is non liturgical clothing. This type of clothing is
typically worn as everyday clothing for the clergy. It is known to be their label or a form of
identification. Different religions have different ways of dressing themselves to show who they are. In
Eastern Christianity, clerical wear is considered everyday clothing, which has to be worn in public at
all times. It does not have to be blessed like the vesting, but it is a daily garment. The garments may
consist of a clerical collar, clergy shirt, cassock, skufia, kamilavka, apostolnik, epanokamelavkion, and
klobuk. Some are more commonly known to be worn in the Russian tradition. The cassock, is the
floor length garment that is usually black and worn by all of the clergy. The skufia and kamilavka are
hats that can be awarded as a sign of honor to the clergy. The apostolnik is worn only by the nuns with
or without one of the caps. The epanokamelavkion is worn by all of the bishops. In Catholicism,
things differed dramatically. The clergy would still wear the cassocks, but the color would ... Show

25. Analysis Of The Movie Basterds
Inglorious Basterds is Quentin Tarantino s sixth film in his discography and is in many aspects, the
perfect culmination of what makes a Tarantino film a Tarantino film. From the deep cultural
references in the dialogue to the unforgivingly in your face, some may even say offensive, violence
throughout, there s no mistaking who s eyes you re seeing the world through. Although it misses on
some key points such as pacing and historical accuracy, Inglorious Basterds depth of characters, use of
language, and unpredictability more than make up for its shortcomings. As someone who has seen all
eight Tarantino films, and most multiple times, it is safe to say that Inglorious Basterds is a solid and
memorable addition to the Tarantino filmography. Inglorious Basterds takes place in Nazi Occupied
France in 1941. For most of the movie, we follow two main characters: American Lt. Aldo Raine and
Austrian born Col. Hans Landa. Brad Pitt plays Lt. Raine, a man whose mission is simple: terrorize
Germans and take revenge on the Nazi s for their treatment of Jews around the world. Along with his
army of eight Jewish soldiers, known as the Basterds, Raine leads an Apache resistance throughout
France. If Raine is our lead protagonist, Hans The Jew Hunter Landa is our lead antagonist. Landa,
played by Christoph Waltz, is one of Hitler s greatest tools to find Jews. As the story plays out, each
man s reputation grows bigger until finally, their paths cross at a Nazi propaganda film

The business I have chosen to examine is Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons Café and Bookshop or Tim
Hortons Inc. is a Canadian based fast food restaurant which is multinational in its operation. The
company was founded by Tim Horton, Jeffrey Ritumalta Horton and Ron Joyce fifty three (53) years
ago on May 17, 1964. With its headquarters in Oakville, Ontario, it is a household name to many
Canadians and very well known for its coffee and donuts. Its colloquial name is Timmy s or Tim s . As
of December 31st, Tim Hortons had a total of 4,613 restaurants in nine countries which include
Ireland, Canada, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United States, and so on. The company has
grown from a single location in Hamilton, Ontario to thousands across the country and a substantial
number in the United States of America. In Canada, there are 3,802 Tim Hortons restaurants, a number
which is much higher than that of McDonalds (1,450). Burger King agreed to purchase Tim Hortons
for US$11.4 billion on August 26,2014. Being in the Restaurant industry, Tim Hortons has major
competitors such as McDonalds, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and so on.

27. Cause And Effect Analysis Of My Last Duchess
Cause and Effect Analysis of My Last Duchess
Communication to a relationship is like oxygen to life. Without it ... it dies. (Gaskins). Communication
is the bridge that develops good understanding between two people, without that bridge there is no
understanding, without the understanding there is no trust. Without communication, understanding and
trust, there is no love, the relationship is dead. This quote correlates to the overall theme in the poem
My Last Duchess by Robert Browning; and how a communication can have a major impact in one s
relationship/ marriage. There is a duke that is on a search for a new wife, but he talks about a paint of
his dead wife and how his wife was very flirtatious to a complete stranger. The cause of the duke and
duchess unsuccessful marriage was the lack of communication, arrogant self pride and his controlling
self nature. Ultimately, no one should ever judge someone without knowing the whole story. One may
think that they understand, but they do not.
My Last Duchess proves how the lack of communication can lead to an unsuccessful marriage. The
duke was always misunderstanding the duchess character due to the lack of communication. This is
can be proven when the duke says With anybody s gift. Who d stoop to blame This sort of trifling? at
the end of the poem. This question was both asked and answered by the duke. What he means is: who
would bother to question the duchess on her inappropriate behaviour and he replied no one. This
proves that there was no open communication between the husband and wife. The duke was not being
honest with his wife which lead to the failure in his marriage. Since, there was no communication
between the duke and duchess, their marriage lacked of understanding which is illustrated when the
duke says Her husband s presence only called that spot Of joy into the Duchess cheek: . because the
duke was not conveying his feelings to the duchess, even when she smiled to show her polite nature,
he misunderstood that as flirting. It is clear that he kept misjudging her because he did not honestly
communicate with her, so therefore he did not get to know her. He did not know much about their
character

The Wise Fools of Shakespeare Infirmity that decays the wise doth ever make a better fool though
uttered by one of his own characters Shakespeare does not seem to conform to this ideal. The fools
carved by Shakespeare in his plays showed no resemblance to the mentally and physically challenged
people who were treated as pets and used for amusement during the medieval period. Rather
Shakespeare s fools appear to be in the best of their wits when they are in possession of the wisest
minds. Fools whether in their rustic vigour displaying grotesque humour or in the forms of the
sophisticated court jesters with their polished puns occupied a substantial position in his plays. Not

However the most mesmerizing of Shakespeare s fools touches his pieces in the form of the court
jesters with their precise and caustic wit fabricated by their well bred minds. These fools it is often
presumed were sketched from the models of the contemporary court jesters particularly influenced by
Tarlton and Armin the royal fools who were not only popular to the audience but also favorites of the
Queen herself. One of the foremost reasons of introduction of these jesters in his plays was to impart
them with the role of social critics in the guise of their iridescent costumes. The royal fools in spite of
their acerbic tongue that blurted out many a comment against royalty were forgiven for the obvious
reasons of those statements being wrapped under their fooleries. Thus the jesters in his plays acted as
the representatives of Shakespeare, through whom he can show a glimpse of the real face of the
contemporary society to his audience. The first professional fool who made his way into Shakespeare
s plays is Touchstone in As you Like it who is probably the most buoyant of his jesters. From his pert
speeches it can be assumed that he is serving his namesake, a touchstone giving a peek of the real
world in mid of all the dreamy romanticism. In the play upon their arriving

the reality, that consumer s perception of interference has a negative effect on consumer s attitude to
mobile marketing (Zhang Li, 2012). Pull marketing gains advantage by utilizing the richer customer

(Barnes, 2002). however, when taking a gander at the pattern of developing mobile applications that
are particularly intended for pull marketing (Dou and Li, 2008, for example, short codes, QR (quick
reaction) codes, and picture acknowledgment based codes, it is likely that pull campaign will have a
more prominent part to play later on of mobile marketing. Because it was created in the 1960s where a

been fighting for, he did not respond with helplessness. He held his ground by not giving into the fear
that Caine had wished to be spelled upon him and his army of children. The children were not able to
feel this fear because they felt if Sam stayed strong the rest would follow. Not only is Sam
courageous, he is also a leader. First, when electing a person to be in charge of Perdido Beach kids

31. Ratio Analysis On The Performance Of Business Organisations
Several academicians are moving towards elimination of ratio analysis as an analytical technique in
assessing the performance of business organisations. Theorists downgrade arbitrary rules of thumb,
which includes company ratio comparisons, widely used by practitioners. Since attacks on the
relevance of ratio originated from esteemed members of scholarly society, this poses the question if
ratio analysis is limited to the world of nuts and bolts ? Can we bridge the gap rather than sever the
link between traditional ratio analysis and the popular rigorous statistical techniques which is more
popular among academicians in recent years (Edward Altman 2012).

Drugs are heavily used throughout the entire world. However, it is important to understand and not
undermine the variability in which drugs are used. It is clear some are for distinct medical treatment
and others are for recreational use. In the United States, marijuana has been and continues to be a very
controversial drug. Some states have allowed marijuana consumption for medicinal purposes, while
others have completely outlawed the drug. Those who are against the legalization and regulation of
marijuana suggest the economical and health risk associated with consumption of the drug are too

in Marijuana Facts 1). From an outsider s perspective, one has to ask why is there so much tension and
hesitation in legalizing marijuana? If alcohol is the direct cause of many deaths, while marijuana has
not been responsible for any, it only makes sense that our health would not be our greatest concern in
legalizing the drug. Also, it is important to understand marijuana consumption is less susceptible to
overuse than alcohol or other drugs (Marijuana 10:477). Despite this, critics often argue that marijuana
is a gateway to other more potent and harmful drugs. According to Dr. Halbach of the World Health
Organization there is no pharmacological link between cannabis and opiates (Marijuana 10:477). This
demonstrates the physiological unlikelihood of marijuana being a stepping stone to other more potent
drugs containing opiates. Marijuana does have drawbacks and side effects, as any other drug whether
medicinal or recreational. However, putting the drug in perspective helps one to understand the
contradiction in legalizing other drugs while continuing to ignore marijuana even though it can
beneficial in different capacities. One major way the legalization and regulation of marijuana can
benefit society is for medical use or prescription by a doctor. Critics of this may be quick to assert this
is an excuse to entertain personal interest and satisfaction one would achieve from the drug. However,

Coca: the Fight to Survive
The Coca plant has been cultivated in the Bolivian Andes since at least the time of the Inca Empire. Its
cultivation expanded in the 1980s feeding into the international cocaine market. In response to U.S.
funded attempts to eradicate and fumigate coca crops in the Chapare region of Bolivia, the indigenous
organizations that grow the plant joined together to contest the government in what is known as the
cocalero movement. Evo Morales, who became president of Bolivia in 2006, is a leader of this
movement. The United States desire to suppress cultivation of the Coca plant due to its role in making
Cocaine does not serve as a suitable rationale of eradicating its production and use as it yields many
different kinds of benefits.
The production of the coca plant is vital for the role it plays in creating cocaine, but the effects of
recreational cocaine use and coca plant use are too different to eradicate the plant altogether.
According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant drug
that produces short term euphoria, energy, and talkativeness. In addition, its use can cause potentially

Li, or rites, has played an integral part in shaping early Chinese philosophy, though not all
philosophers have agreed on its meaning or reason for application. Some will argue that human nature
requires us to us Li to be ethical beings, while others believe that Li will teach and mold us into beings
that will follow the norms of our society. The three major Confucian philosophers whom used the idea
of Li to shape their theories were Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi. All three of these philosophers used
Li to shape their ideal government, but it was Xunzi who would have the most applicable form of an
ideal government. Confucius was alive and teaching during the Spring and Autumn period. The power

Looking back at the social norm of a man holding a door open, even though there is no direct
punishment for not holding the door open, a man will naturally feel a sense of shame when not
adhering to the social ritual that is ascribed to a man. He wanted men to do the right thing not out of
fear, but out of shame. This would lead the common folk to follow the Li and become gentlemen in
their own right. There would be no chaos due to lack of basic needs because the everyone in the
society was fulfilling their personal role, whether it be to provide food or provide governance.
Confucius also put a large emphasis on the Zhou kings of the past, calling them sage kings and
praising their ability to keep order through promoting Li to their subjects, which caused peace and
security to their fellow man (The Analects, 22). Mencius, a stark follower of Confucius s teachings,
viewed Li in a different light. Living in the time called the Warring State Period, Mencius saw the
discourse and chaos that Confucius had worked hard to fight against. While rulers fought amongst
themselves for power, Mencius sought to find what was the cause of this chaos and what could
alleviate it. Mencius had a nearly identical description of Li as Confucius, yet his Li was largely tied
in with human nature and the internal struggle to be a moral person. Li was just one of the
