Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux
The artist that created the masterpiece of Ugolino and His Sons is Jean Baptiste Carpeaux. Born in
1827 in Valenciennes, Nord, he came from a family of masons. Carpeaux was a French sculptor and
painter during the Second Empire under Napoleon III. Carpeaux entered the École Nationale
Supérieure des Beaux Arts in 1844 and studied under the Romantic Sculptor François Rude. In 1850
he abandoned Rude s studio for Francisque Duret, another teacher at the school that helped Carpeaux
receive an honorable mention for his Achilles Wounded in the Heel in the Prix de Rome competition
that year. Carpeaux then followed that up with second place for his figure Philoctetes on Lemnos and
in 1854 he won the Gran Prix de Rome for his group Hector and His Son Astyanax. ... Show more

The French Ministry of Fine Arts commissioned a bronze cast by Victor Thiébaut and placed it in the
Tuileries Gardens and Carpeaux even completed the work in marble and had it displayed at the
Exposition Universelle of 1867 in Paris, where it won first prize for sculpture. Immediately after the
success of Ugolino and His Sons Carpeaux gained important commissions. These included a portrait
of the Prince Imperial son of Napoleon III (1864), a sculptural group The Dance (1865) for the facade
of Charles Garnier s CarOpera, the Four Parts of the World Sustaining the Globe for the fountain of
Observatory (1867) in the gardens of the Luxembourg Palace. Carpeaux married a twenty two year old
daughter of a general in April 1869, they had two sons. Carpeaux was then awarded the Cross of the

Essay Affirmative Action
Affirmative action works. When these policies received government support, vast numbers of people
of color, white women and men have gained access they would not otherwise have had. These gains
have led to very real changes. Affirmative action programs have not eliminated racism, nor have they
always been implemented without problems. However, there would be no struggle to roll back the
gains achieved if affirmative action policies were ineffective. The implementation of affirmative
action was America s first honest attempt at solving a problem, it had previously chosen to ignore. In a
variety of areas, from the quality of health care to the rate of employment, blacks still remain far
behind whites.

Congress also passed a number of civil rights laws barring discrimination against blacks in hotels,
theaters, and other places. However, the South reacted by passing the Black Codes, which severely
limited the rights of the newly freed slaves, preventing them in most states from testifying in courts
against whites, limiting their opportunities to find work, and generally assigning them to the status of
second or third class citizen. White vigilante groups like the Klu Klux Klan began to appear, by
murdering and terrorizing blacks who tried to exercise their new rights. Legal ways were also found
for circumventing the new laws; these included grandfather clauses , poll taxes, white only primary
elections, and constant social discrimination against and intimidation of blacks, who were excluded
form education and from any job except the most menial. Affirmative action has had its greatest
amount of success in city, state, and government jobs. Since the 1960s the area of law enforcement
witnessed the greatest increase in minority applicants, and in jobs offered to minorities. This should be
viewed as an extremely positive thing, because prior to affirmative action these jobs were almost

Corporate Profit Margins Case Analysis
Corporate profit margins hit 3 decade high on falling loonie, labour costs Dana Flavelle, Economy,
Tuesday March 31, 2015 Summary In spite of plunging oil price and slow of Canadian economic
growth rate. The reason of higher profit margins is structural changes in the economy, such as low
interest rates, decreased unionization and globalization. Canadian exports have competitive because of
a lower dollar. The higher profits will eventually lead companies to invest and expand and create jobs.
Most of the increase profit margins have occurred since 2012. The lift to profit margins is in the

Data Analysis Method
Throughout our observation week we were able to collect vast amount of data both from observations
and interviews. In order to let our data speak to us and help us to understand how the collaborative
work is conducted between ITB and Royal Danish Library we have adopted grounded theory method
as a main data analysis practice to work with. This decision involved summarizing cons and pros of
using this approach. According to Glaser, Barney G Strauss (1967), using grounded theory involves
development of theory rather by logical deduction then from experimental data itself. The publication
of The Discovery of Grounded theory finds it relevant in practical applications and enable prediction
and explanation of behavior. As our field setting is not often overflown with different actors we have
decided to unlock behavioral patterns and get insight also on the profiles of employees. By this
approach we have enriched our data, by being able to see connection between artifacts and articulation
work, that draws an implication of artifacts in collaborative work. Moreover we have observed that
each artifact might have different purpose of use as it is observed by different point of views from
different subjects. The fact that we were able to actually observe appropriation in collaborative work,
which can be described such as an assimilation of technology by group of people in completely
different manner as designer firstly intended to, made us to logically distinguish between different

Public Defender Thesis
For this upcoming research project, the working title would be Public Support for Public Defenders:
How Income Affects Perception . Specifically, I want to look at how public approval of public
defender s impacts differs based on income and how that affects whether they think reforms are

effectiveness and approval of public defenders? So far two studies have been done that will aid in my
research question. The first was a study is entitled Americans Views on Public Defenders and The

This study looks at those who use the services of public defenders and whether they think they are
effective or approval of them. This is a significant issue for both public policy and California because
the public s approval and belief in the effectiveness of a certain services affects how resources are
allocated and whether reforms are implemented. As a current intern at the Sacramento County Public
Defender s Office it is clear that resources are limited compared to those available for say the DA s
office, so if the public believes that it is effective regardless of these limitations then they are less
willing to increase resources. On the other side, those from a lower income that are clients of the
public defender s office can see first hand the limitations of these services and may believe reforms
are necessary to increase its effectiveness. While the first study was focused nationally and the second
was focused in Cincinnati, I want to see if California shows similar

European Union Pros And Cons
Discuss the benefits of the European Union (EU) for its member states. Does the recent financial and
debt crisis provide arguments against regional economic integration?
The European Union
The European union is an integrated system featuring some if not most of the countries in Europe. It is
an economic and political agreement between the European member states that binds countries
together through treaties, which have been signed by every country in the union. It was established
back in the 1950s but, back then it only featured 19 countries in comparison to now when it features
28.
For the countries featured in The European Union, there are several benefits the country and its
citizens incur. These include, free mobility between member states as you can work, study and travel
wherever you please within the European union. Also, as per occupytheory.org, over 3.5 million jobs
have been created for the 320 million European citizens just over the last few years. However, not all
their policies are effective as we saw with the common agricultural policy that led to the increase in
price and oversupply of goods. Although this is a negative, the European union still manages to
maintain integration through the development of deprived regions. This is done by the other member
states helping to improve countries which aren t as developed as them, this is done through the
European Structural Fund .
Following on from this the EU has a large variety of benefits towards it member

Significance Of The Treaty Of Versailles
Madison Welzbacher
September 19, 2014
World History
Significance of the Treaty of Versailles
World War I was a devastating war that had a long lasting effect on every European country. After the
assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, and his wife by the hands of a
Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand. Germany urged Austria Hungary to attack Serbia,
but Russia stepped up to protect the country. Germany ambushed Belgium, and proceeded to Russia,
throwing Great Britain into the war due to their alliance with Belgium. As a result, the continent of
Europe, including Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Austria Hungary, and France, was plunged into a great
World War. The war lasted from 1914 to 1918, and it left Germany singled out as the catalyst. In
November 1918, Germany finally agreed to an Armistice, a halt in the fighting, but they did not
consider themselves to be surrendering. At the time, the Germans believed that they would play a role
in constructing the treaty that would end the war, but when the time came, they were not allowed to
participate. Germany was greatly angered by this, but there was nothing that they could do for their
army had been disarmed. They had two choices: sign the Treaty or be invaded by the Allies. With no
other option, the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace
of Versailles in France. Although the Treaty of Versailles did bring an end to World War I,

Cardiovascular Events And Progression Of Ischemia And...
In 2014, myocardial infarctions were the second lead cause of death in Northern Ireland, proceeded
only by malignant neoplasms. (Department of Finance and Personnel. (2015)
They occur as a result of an imbalance between the demand for oxygen and its supply by the coronary
arteries. Indeed, MI s can occur as a result of complications with anemia and heart spasms. However,
the main cause of the condition is produced as a result of atheroma.
Under normal physiological conditions platelets mediate the coagulation of blood and have an
important role within the process of haemostasis. It is only when pathological processes arise that
inappropriate and threatening activation of platelets becomes apparent. Indeed, it is a well known
phenomenon that platelets are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of ischemia and
myocardial infarctions and it is therefore this aim of this review to summarize the inappropriate
activation within the cardiovascular events and how this is related to presentation of a myocardial
infarction. Introduction
Platelets represent an important linkage between inflammation, thrombosis, and atherogenesis, and
have a critical role within the circulatory system in the maintenance of normal haemostasis. (Gawaz,
A., et al. (2005) Platelets primary role and function are in the protection against unwanted blood loss
via thrombus formation, in which, platelets along with red blood cells and the insoluble protein fibrin,
form a platelet plug. Indeed,

The Human Body Has Changed Over 3000 Years Ago
The history of the human body has changed over 3,000 years ago. Many physicians based their
findings primarily through intuitive thinking and ancient philosophers. The primary reason I chose this
topic is because I love the anatomy and knowing all the organs, body parts, and the way the body
functions. After my aunt was diagnose with type 2 diabetes, I had a strong desire to know, how could
this be? I thought, Why not know the history behind it and the science itself. What exactly caused it?
What specific organs in the body were affected by it? And is it preventable? Just take a look around
science is all around you. You may not see it through the naked eye, but believe me it s there. The
Father of Medicine , and Greek physician, Hippocrates is well known in today s era. He believed
diseases of the human body were naturally caused; rather than by demons. While on the other hand, a
Roman physician, Claudius Galen made fallacious judgements of the human body; primarily because
he only dissected animals and not cadavers. Andreas Vesalius had been much more absurd; when
performing dissection on dead bodies, in his anatomy class. Modern day philosophers Hippocrates,
Claudius Galen, and Andreas Vesalius had a passion for science and incorporated their thoughts in
skills into their own work.
Hippocrates found factors, which contributed to the underlying causes of diseases, in the human body.
During his time people, people believed that diseases were caused by some demonic

Analysis On Maximizing Investment Returns
Analysis on maximising investment returns in financial markets Introduction Portfolio optimisation is
a method of calculating and generating the maximum profit for the investors by allocating the initial
capital into various asset classes. During the procedure, investors must consider the rate of return as
well as the potential financial risks that could affect the expected value and accuracy of asset
allocation decisions. Markowitz s Modern portfolio theory builds up the foundation of solving
portfolio optimisation problem nowadays using standard deviations to estimate the span of risk where
investments with higher returns tend to have more risks accordingly. Asset class allocation is a crucial
part of portfolio optimisation to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For UK investors, all nine asset classes are worthy of investments, however the key in this scenario is
to balancing the possible high risks while attempting to achieve the highest return using linear
programming, As a result, boundaries have been set by the fund manager to maintain the risks within a
feasible level. The money invested into each asset class must be between the lower bound and upper
bound. Assumptions on how the manager estimated the annual return rate Firstly the fund manager
could have used compound average; by calculating the combined returns from different periods could
perfectly demonstrate investments with returns over a certain period of time. Secondly the fund
manager could have used the Internal Rate of Return method to calculate the annual returns rates. IRR
is more flexible than compound average as it covers multiple cash flows over certain periods of time.
This method is more useful in this scenario because there are several asset classes available for
investments. Finally, arithmetic mean is the simplest way of calculating annual rate of return. Just
simply adding up all the returns in the past then divided by number of periods. The drawback is that
arithmetic mean will be affected by negative figures whereas compound average and IRR don t.
Solving Problem Linear programming model is extremely applicable to identify an optimal

Is Hunting Ethical
Hunting has been around since the beginning of man. Early humans hunted to survive in the harsh
world. Hunting is still used to supply a source of food for many, but it has turned into a recreational
sport for some. The turn from means of survival to sport has spurred the argument over whether or not
hunting is humane or ethical. Hunting is very ethical because can help stop overpopulating species,
slow overgrazing, and be used as a source of food.
Overpopulating species can become very bad for an ecosystem. When a species goes unchecked for a
long period time, their population will quickly rise. The number of the animal will soon get too high
for the ecosystem to be able to supply food for them. This will cause a number of the species to begin

They rely solely on the food that they can hunt down and make themselves. Hunting allows them to
survive the lifestyle they live. The living of the land lifestyle can only happen if hunting is allowed
because wildlife is part of the land. If hunting was ever outlawed, then numerous amounts of people
will lose their only source of food.
There are many organizations that oppose the idea of hunting citing that it is very inhumane to kill a
defenseless animal. PETA, for example, is a group that views hunting as a barbaric act of savagery.
They want to outlaw hunting because it hurts animals. They also preach about living a vegetarian life.
However, this is just not possible. The human body was designed to live off of the proteins found in
meat. This is why the basic instinct of man is to hunt and eat meat.
The argument over hunting being humane and ethical is quickly becoming a hot topic. It has many
backers on both sides. Hunting positively affects many families all over the world. Hunting is a very
beneficial act for the environment as it controls overpopulation, stops overgrazing, and provides food
for people all over the

Jose Garcia Villa s Footnote To Youth
The short story Footnotes to Youth , written by Filipino writer Jose Garcia Villa, talks about a young
boy at the age of seventeen Dodong, who was initially very enthusiastic about life, but then the
obstacles and tribulations of life got the best of him and made him became grim about life. This goes
for same for his wife Teang, who carried the burden of taking care of six children and doing household
chores, and as a result she became shapeless and thin. Both of their lives became miserable after
having children despite their young age.
By reading the literary text Footnotes to Youth , it is found that the theory of psychoanalysis is applied
in the story. Through the dreams and the thoughts of the character, it is shown that the characters of
the story had inner feelings within them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He thought that life had been made ugly for him after his marriage to Teang. Teang felt the same, as
she wished that she was not married, or at least that she had no children. There is also denial when
Blas told his father, Dodong, about his proposal to Tona. Dodong couldn t believe that his son was
doing the same thing as he did eighteen years ago. However, he could not do anything but to give his
blessings to his son reluctantly and hoped that he would able to go through th tribulation of life.
There is also evidence of archetypes, an easily recognizable role in literature and drama. It is found
that one character can have more than one archetype, as long they meet the requirements. In the short
story Footnotes to Youth , it is discovered that Teang was the anima, or the ideazed female in Dodong
s mind, as he constantly dreamt of her day and night. He desired her, and wanted to marry her. Tona
was the anima in Blas mind as well. The statement he gave to his father, Dodong, that he wanted her,
suggested that he had a sense of possessiveness within

Importance Of Public Figure As Role Models
Due to our social media devices being connected with so much around the world, the youth have
become quite persuadable on what is right and what is wrong; increasing the suspicion on whether
these public figures should be considered role model material or not. Though public figures can be
role models, not all of them should be because they might be but that doesn t mean all public figures
can t be role models. Public figures have the ability to inspire others by showing their determination
when times get tough and by showing their passion for their work, which motivates others to have the
same mindset as them. Some people believe public figures should not be considered role models due
to some of them doing immature and irresponsible off of the screen. Public figures should be
considered role models because they are capable of displaying how to act properly in society and that
it is possible to persevere through tough obstacles in life. Public figures display how to act in society
for instance, being responsible and acceptive of everyone. As stated in the article, Teens who idolize a
celebrity who doesn t give in to such pressures as weight and drugs will likely benefit from their
obsession. (Martinez). Acting responsibly in society giving into the pressure of doing drugs is
something admirable that some public figures don t give into. For example, Justin Bieber at one point
in his life started to do drugs and it was ruining his career but he had started to reform and

Capital Punishment Should Be Enforced Throughout The...
Crime is permanent and unchanging. The same can be said for death. It is for this reason that the death
penalty is so effective. The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is defined as the
execution, or punishment by killing, of a person who has been found guilty of a specific, and usually
serious, crime (Barber). Capital punishment should be enforced throughout the United States because
it is a humane tradition that has been practiced for centuries, it deters crime, and it provides retribution
and gives justice to the victimized. The death penalty is a humane practice that has been going on for
centuries, even to Biblical times. Though it has transformed many times from its ancient ways into
modern society, it remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For individuals that are not Babylonian in belief, there is also much discussion of the lex talionis in the
pages of Christianity under Exodus: you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for
hand (Wolf). According to the Bible, the following crimes are cause for death: contempt, trespassing
on holy ground, sorcery, prostitution, idolatry, and adultery. Executions were held in the colonial age
as a way to reflect God s law and keep the order. The Book of Exodus also sentences murderers to the
death penalty: whoever strikes a man a mortal blow must be put to death (Wolf). The death penalty
was incredibly successful in the past, and as human nature has stayed the same, so should its
traditions.
The death penalty has transformed over time to meet modern needs, and is still used in recent history.
This practice has become increasingly humane due to the revisions needed for modern times. As a
result of the Furman v. Georgia case of 1972, many states began to revise and adjust their capital
punishment laws closer to their current state. Florida was first, revising after a short five months.
Furman v. Georgia set standards as to when a method of punishment could be considered
unconstitutional (Espejo). Presently, one can only be subjected to the death penalty after being found
guilty in a proper trial, in accordance with the right to a fair trial by jury. Executions by non state
organizations, such as terrorist groups, are

a. Bond s with collateral will have lower coupon rate as bondholders have claim on collateral no

collateral cannot be sold as an asset and needs to maintain it.

Coupon bond principal payment at maturity = 30,000($1,000) = $30,000,000
The principal payment for the zero coupon bonds at maturity will be:
Zero coupon bond payment at maturity = 139,827($1,000) = $139,827,000
4. Annual coupon bond payments = 30,000($1,000)(.08) = $2,400,000
Since the interest payments are tax deductible, the aftertax cash flow from the interest payments will
be:
Aftertax coupon payments = $2,400,000(1 .35) = $1,560,000
Even though interest payments are not actually made each year, the implied interest on the zero
coupon bonds is tax deductible. The value of the zero coupon bonds next year will be:
Value of zero in one year = $1,000/1.0819 = $231.71
5. P = $40({1 [1/(1 + .03)]26 } / .03) + $1,000[1 / (1 + .03)26] P = $1,178.77
And, if the Treasury rate is 9.10 percent, the make whole call price in 7 years is:
P = $40({1 [1/(1 + .0475)]26 } / .0475) + $1,000[1 / (1 + .0475)26] P = $889.35
So, the growth on the zero coupon bond was:
Zero coupon growth = $231.71 214.55 = $17.26
This increase in value is tax deductible, so it reduces taxes even though there is no cash flow for
interest payments. So, there is a positive cash flow created next year in the amount of:
Zero cash flow = 139,827($17.26)(.35) = $839,989.70
This cash flow will increase each year since the value of the zero coupon bond will increase by a
greater dollar amount each year.

Gender Differences in Trifles Essay
Trifles by Susan Glaspell is a play that is largely based on stereotypes. The most prevalent one is the
inferiority of women over men, though the play also explores the differences between genders in
general. First of all, Glaspell largely examines the repression of women in the 1900s. Women were
highly looked down upon by men, and were seen mostly as housekeepers and child bearers, and were
definitely not seen as intelligent people. The women in this play prove that the stereotypes against
them are completely wrong. The men in this story are sent out to discover the details of a murder,
while the women come along to gather some things for Mrs. Wright, who was accused of killing her
husband. Throughout the play, the men mock the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They don t realize that the little things do matter in solving a case like this. By worrying over trifles
(655), as Mr. Hale puts it, the women end up finding out a lot more about the murder than the men do.
The gender differences in the play are obvious and important to the story. The men in this play exhibit
some traditional stereotypes of men during the time period, such that they were aggressive and self
centered. The women seem to be more cautious, intuitive and sensitive. These traits allow the women
to come a lot closer to figuring out the murder than the men do. At one point in the play the women
find a quilt that Mrs. Wright had been working on. Mrs. Hale asks Mrs. Peters, I wonder if she was
goin to quilt it or just knot it? (658). Just then the sheriff comes down the stairs and once again
ridicules the women for worrying about such little things. They wonder if she was going to quilt it or
just knot it! (658), he exclaims. This is actually an important piece of evidence in the story, as the
ladies find out later. They realize that she was extremely nervous about something while she was
sewing, because she usually sews so nice and even (658), but the piece she had been working on was
all over the place (658). Then, while looking around in the kitchen, and not even trying to find

Food During The Victorian Era
So long as you have food in your mouth, you have solved all questions for the time being Franz
Kafka, this quote is true for many people today. It is basically saying that as long as everyone is
eating, everyone is satisfied. During the Victorian Era, this was especially true for everyone, and they
were constantly making preparations for their next meal. Food during the Victorian Era was very
different from food today.
Nowadays, to make a meal all we do is place something in the microwave, add water, and there is

During the Victorian Era, they ate food right in its natural form with almost nothing added onto it for
flavor. However, people overall were not necessarily healthier, considering the percentage of people
who were considered to be in the lower class and lived in cities. The average city working class man s
diet was inconsistent, very basic, and for the most part innutritious (Wohl). People of the working
class in the country usually had to be self reliant when it came to food because they often did not have
the money to buy food. They would raise their own meat and grow their own food. This was actually
quite healthy considering the only added things were just natural spices and flavorings. People who
lived in the city and were in the working class had a much harder time getting nourishing food since
they did not have a place to make their own food. This led to their being distinctly malnourished as
compared to the higher class and people in the country. The people of the higher class, though they
often lived in the city, had a diet similar to those in the country, but with a larger variety of foods.
They could go to restaurants to get their food, have food imported (for a price), or have others raise
their own food for them. It was hard for people of the city working class and higher class to get the
proper nutrients, but those from the farming industry tended to eat much better (Victorian Food). Their
food was very fresh, and almost completely in its natural form which makes it quite healthy. Though
the higher class got a large variety as well, their food had a few added things, and had often been
shipped in which takes nutrients away. The health of food is something that is very different now
because we rarely have food in its natural form, so we are getting less nutrients than some people

How Is Othello Racist
Moor or Less Racist Rough Draft
The tragedy of Othello, written by William Shakespeare, involves a romantic union of white and
black, which is gruesomely torn apart by outsiders within the community through manipulation,
bringing the couple to their fatal end. The esteemed Othello is a black man with a high rank in the
army living in the city of Venice among fair skinned native Venetians. Within the play, racism
definitely plays a huge role in the public s views and stereotypes of Othello. The reader must consider
these other characters motivations for their words, however. The reader must also consider the drastic
difference between the ways that we understand race today, versus how our ancestors saw race back in
the sixteenth century, when the story takes place. During this time, people were believed to be
controlled by their humors, or body fluids, and they are greatly affected by their geographical
positions and changes. Some scholars have argued that Othello is a racist, disgusting play, which

Murata
The offspring produced via parthenogenesis have often been considered an evolutionary dead end due
to their low potential to respond to changing environments, (MURATA, 2009). Since these organisms
are not able to change their environments they often have a higher rate of extinction. However, recent
studies have shown that some organisms, such as aphids, are genetically more variable than
hypothesized and have a substantial potential for rapid adaptive changes, which means that they are
able to survive in the constantly changing environments (Murata, 2009). A study conducted by Yusuke

What is a Fragrance Chemist? A fragrance chemist is a researcher who conducts experiments to create
scents for household products and cosmetics. These scientists frequently work in labs creating
fragrances that will not adversely affect consumer such as making it a hypoallergenic. These scientists
test the chemical components to ensure that they do not react negatively when added to the product.
These experts have to follow the correct guidelines when handling chemicals in order to avoid the
dangers of any safety or health hazards(Ford).

Globalization Is A Major Point Of Negativity
Globalization is defined in many ways. Globalization generally refers to the expansion of global
communications, growing social and political interdependence and the development of a planetary
rather than national awareness among many of the world s people (Anderson, 98). The process of
globalization is allowing people from all over the world be more interconnected with one another. The
process is seen in many different ways. Our clothing is no longer made in the United States, today we
look at the tags and see Made in Indonesia or Product of Venezuela . Many companies such as
Microsoft, Nike, and Wal Mart are reaching people in places that were not considered feasible markets
only 30 years ago. Globalization has been a subject to controversy by both the richest and the poorest
of countries. Outsourcing is a major point of negativity in this new interconnected world. Many jobs
are lost from workers in the developed nations and sent to developing nations who will supply
workers for less.
There are many causes of globalization. We cannot put our finger on any one particular change in our
culture that has led to the larger interconnectedness of nations. Globalization has been around for a
long time, going back to mercantilism of the 16th through 18th centuries. Today s vast globalization
may be attributed to the formation of the United Nations in 1945. Along with the United Nations, the
creation of the World Trade Organization has accelerated this trend with trade

Gap Between Literary Gothic and Pornography
As a society, we are confronted daily with pornographic images, they feature in our newspapers, on
our film screens, and even in our novels. This voyeuristic obsession the media holds has for a long
time been desensitizing us to depictions of violence and sex, but has it also disabled us in being able to
see the difference between what is carefully constructed satire and what is merely pornography? There
is probably no text this discussion embraces more in modern gothic literature than that of Brett Easton
Ellis American Psycho. The novel was surrounded with controversy, ecen before its publication in
1991. Originally, cited to be published by Simon Schuster, the company forfeited from the

In order to understand this, we must consider that not all of society receives pornography in such a

purpose of arousal. Therefore in order for the gap between American Psycho and pornography to be
truly irrelevant, the text would have needed to be produced for the purpose of arousal. Although there

12 Monkeys and Society s Perception of Drugs Essay
Illegal Drugs vs. Psych Ward Drugs
The definition of drugs ranges from supposedly positive to automatically classified as negative. But

hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behavior and often addiction
and A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a

everyday by teens and adults and often looked down upon. Numerous accidents have occurred do to
the abuse of some drugs. Drugs in our society today are initially thought of as bad, and then we come
to the understanding that there are other types of drugs that may in fact not be bad but used for good.
Illegal drugs are portrayed in our society as really bad, but the use of drugs is abused in psych wards

The concept of the prison has existed for more than two thousand years. It probably goes back as far
in time as practice of cannibalism, where victims had to wait for their turn in contributing to the chief

Joseph was incarcerated in Egypt. It was not until the 19th century that a clear shift occurred from
corporal punishment to imprisonment. As societies prospered and the industrial revolution began, the
formal prison system, as we know it today, developed. Throughout most of the world, the correctional

Segal and Moore (2002) identified about 23 U.S. cost comparison studies and fewer quality studies.
Many of those studies were of questionable value because they did not comply with specific
characteristics of meta analysis (did not have explicit comparison of private and public facilities, the
study was based on citations of other studies, few recognizable databases, among others). The most
recent review, a meta analysis by Lundahl et. al. (2009) only identified 12 studies of cost and quality
meeting their criteria for sound methodology .
According to Alex Tabarrok, privately managed facilities can have cost savings of 15 25% on prison

exert pressure towards public prisons. They encourage public prisons to also innovate and lower costs.
Other studies (Lundahl et al. 2009, page 392) argue, prison privatization provides neither a clear
advantage nor disadvantage compared with publicly managed prisons. The economic nature of private
corporations is to be profit seeking agents whose sole focus is to maximize shareholder value. This is
a fair reason and a reason that will always exist. Detractors of privatization and free market systems,

According to David Stauth, towards the end of the 1800s humans began to eradicate the wolf
population in the Yellowstone area. (David Stauth) By 1926 the wolf population was destroyed.
(David Stauth) During the 1800s and 1900s the West was popular for cattle ranches. Ranchers saw the
wolves as pests destroying their profits due to the wolves feeding on the cattle. Thus began the
beginning of the collapse of an ecosystem. With wolves missing from the ecosystem everything
became greatly unbalanced leading to a domino effect. No longer fearing the wolves, elk began to
freely graze which in turn began the destruction of foliage. The foliage destruction affected other
animals that relied on the vegetation for sustenance and shelter. With the lack of vegetation, animals
begin migrating elsewhere for food and harborage. Not only were the wolves gone, other animals
began to either over populate or disappear along with the foliage. Hence the slow beginning of a land
that would eventually become bare of life. One can now understand why wildlife conservation is so
important after learning the effects of simply removing one key element from the ecosystem. To
further this understanding of the importance of wildlife conservation observe the affects of
reintroducing the wolves in Yellowstone . Beginning at the end of 1994 and continuing

(Drug, 2016) America has one of the most stringent pharmaceutical systems in the world that is
closely monitored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and
Research (CDER). The job of CDER is to evaluate each and every new drug (prescription and
nonprescription) before it is approved for market. In order to pass this evaluation in order to bring a
new medication to the market a pharmaceutical company must first complete a sequence of events.
The FDA requires the following steps to be taken: Preclinical Testing, Investigational New Drug
Application, 3 Phases of Clinical Trials; New Drug Application, Phase IV Studies. (Drug, 2016)
However, it should be noted that depending on the need of the drug, Pharmaceutical Companies when
approved by the FDA might take other routes to expedite the process.
Preclinical Testing First the pharmaceutical company must conduct a series of preclinical tests prior to
the drug being administered to a human being. During this testing, both laboratory and animal studies
must be accomplished to prove the biological effects of the drug on the targeted disease. This may
take an average of 3 ½ years to complete.
Investigational New Drug Application The pharmaceutical company then files an Investigational New

Analysis Of Stairway To Heaven
No matter how many times somebody is asked to give an explanation to what the song Stairway to
Heaven really perseveres, different answers will be given every time. The song Stairway to Heaven
was written by Led Zeppelin in 1971. Throughout all these years, still everybody has their own
interpretation to the song, and they will respond differently based upon what the true meaning of the
song really is. The reason being is, the song represents many different values throughout it, and it is
the others choice to determine the outlook on it.
In 1980, Led Zeppelin could have had the biggest tour in the history of rock and roll. Although, this
never happened because one of the members, Rob Plant, refused to be a part of it. He rejected to

that the lyrics took some rough shots. In the beginning of it, he claims that it is meant towards a
woman who strives for money, only to find out the unpleasant way that is going to be keeping her
from reaching her stairway to heaven. Rob Plant had no other reason for stating what his meaning was
towards writing the song, but he did note that he saw it as a woman getting everything she wanted

Putting rounds down range every time you pull the trigger on your firearm is very important, whether

the proper maintenance of your firearm. There are many types of firearms in today s world with some
that are more complicated than others in their operation and maintenance. One of the easier firearms to
maintain is the Armalite Rifle, Model 15, otherwise known as the AR 15. The basic disassembly, or

Place your towel flat on your work surface before proceeding (this is to help prevent oil, grease,
powder residue, and your firearm from damaging the work surface). The first step in disassembly after
making the weapon clear and safe is to separate the upper receiver group from the lower receiver
group. Locate the takedown pin, which is located just above the safety, and the pivot pin, which is
located at the front of the lower receiver. With your number 2 punch depress the takedown pin from
the left side. You should feel a noticeable click when the takedown pin overcomes the force of the
takedown pin detent. Repeat for the pivot pin, being careful not to push the pin all the way through the
receiver. The takedown pin and pivot pins should now be partially extended on the right side of the
lower receiver. Lay the firearm on its left side so it lies flat on your work surface. Grasp the takedown
pin from the right side and pull till it fully extends out the right side of the receiver. Again, you should
feel a noticeable click when the detent pin engages the takedown pin at the fully extended position.
Now repeat by grasping and pulling the pivot pin till it fully extends out the right side of the receiver.
Next, while holding the lower receiver group, grasp the upper receiver group and slide it clear of the

Immigrate To Canada
Top Reasons to Immigrate to Canada
Canada has a multicultural society and relies heavily on immigration. The aging population of Canada
makes it imminent for them to open up their gates for immigrants from other countries. According to a
research, it was found that Canadians above the age of 65 years comprise 16.1% of Canada s total
population and compared to this the population of under 15s is considerably low. This has created a
void that must be filled with the help of immigration.
Major problems pertaining to aging population are:
● Huge burden on the economy
● Less workers in the workforce
● More expenditure on pension and healthcare
● More taxes for the current workforce

Travel
Canada is also a great travel destination and can provide a great bang for every buck you put into your

people travelling in solitude or in a group.
Vancouver houses the hockey team vancouver canucks and is filled with places that can provide you

Disadvantages Of Gold Loans
Loans not only forms an important source of revenue for banks and other financial institutions, but
they also add to the economy. The most recent of them being is Gold loans. Gold loans are amongst
the newest class of assets which have seen rapid growth in securitisation. Gold has been a valued
commodity for a pretty long time, particularly in India where it is considered highly valuable and
auspicious and has been in use for centuries in the form of jewellery, coins and other assets. Gold
being a highly liquid asset, it has been recognized as a product that can be leveraged by consumers to
meet their liquidity needs effectively.
In India, it is believed that most of the gold is held by people in rural areas and in many cases this is
the only asset they have in their possession though in small quantity by which they can easily raise
cash from moneylenders due to unavailability of banking facilities. Opting for gold loan can be

His premiership style, along with his ability on managing foreign affairs, were highly praised by

especially during the Civil War. In the novel Jubilee written by Margaret Walker, injustice is
incorporated throughout the book in many ways such as Vyry getting whipped, Randall Ware getting
beaten by the Ku Klux Klan, and Jim being beaten by Innis Brown. Vyry, the main character of Jubilee
who grew up a slave, is the character who is affected the most by injustice. She has been through it
multiple times, as well as seen some of the people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Jim accidently let the pig, who was about to give birth, die, Innis Brown, Vyry s second
husband, got so angry with Jim that he beat him. Jim ran into the house ...sobbing hysterically and
screaming incoherent words between sobs (482). It became clear to Vyry that something was wrong.
Vyry could tell Jim had been beaten because ...his shirt was in shreds and sticking to his skin and she
[Vyry] saw his back was bleeding (482). Once Jim ran up into his room, Innis Brown came back into
the house with the stick he had used to beat Jim. Innis greeted Vyry at the door by saying Where is that
good for nothing trifling low down boy? I ain t begun to beat him. I feels like skinning his hide! (483).
This caused Vyry to grow furious with Innis because she did not agree with the fact that her husband
was beating her child. Under these circumstances, Jim was not the only one to be affected; the incident
split up the whole family for some time, as well. The house was so gloomy that morning... Everybody
ate in silence and no one paid attention to Harry s chatter or the dog... (488). Nobody talked to
eachother for a few days, and Vyry was so abstracted that the children stopped trying to talk to her
(488). The actions that Innis Brown had performed not only affected Jim but the whole family. This
situation put a small dent in the family, but they were eventually able to overcome it and move

Textual Analysis Psychology
Scott and Craig lees (2010) organized an experiment that analyzed if product placement, inclusion of
branded products that appear through audio or visual means, influenced audience engagement through
levels of pleasure, arousal, and cognitive effort. The researchers focused on specific variables that may
influence the effects product placement has on their audience. For example, engagement (attention),
involvement( interest ), connectedness ( to the program), engrossment( absorption of media) ,
immersion (psychological state), and transportation (losing real world facets while viewing).
However, the researchers are primarily focusing on engagement. They hypothesis that implicit

All in all, the researchers predicted that there is a positive relationship between pleasure and brand
recognition. The researchers conducted a quasi experimental approach, which means the researchers
do not have full control over the experimental stimuli, which is a good approach when analyzing
behaviors. They tracked the correlation between engagement and memory after showing the product
placement. Their participants were 166 high school students in Sydney, Australia, ages 14 16 who
were heavy movie watchers. They showed the participants the movie Legally Blonde, which had
twenty two product placements within the movie followed by a post questionnaire. The questions
simply asked if they noticed any of the products in the movie with yes/ no/not sure as the options for
them to answer. For their engagement test, they utilized Mehrabian and Russell s pleasure, arousal,
dominance scale, which measured pleasantness versus unpleasantness and positive versus negative
feelings. Their results concluded that pleasure has a significant, positive relationship with brand
recognition. The analysis indicates that when all levels of engagement are present, which includes
pleasure, arousal, and cognitive effort, brand recognitions reaches the highest

Employee Retention Case
reference to her lack of time management, detail and initiative as it related to her position. This
occurred in early 2009 prior to the assault. Ms. Nelson was granted leave after requesting the time off
to care for her daughter as well as time for herself due to lack of energy and concentration. During the
time that Ms. Nelson was away, there was evidence that surfaced that indicated that inaccurate
timesheets were submitted. When said employee returned to work, she also brought her daughter with
her. At this time, her employer gave an ultimatum that she had to make a choice between caring for
her daughter or continue to have a job. No employee should have to make this choice; especially with
the circumstances presented. This employer should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having any type of sympathy or empathy for an employee may be shown, but it will not be done in a
high regard. Being able to separate business from personal feelings has been known to be indicative of
a highly successful organization. On the other hand, if an employer shows that they have some type of
heart when it comes to the concerns of their employees, they will have a lower turnover than other
organizations because employees will want to keep their jobs. Employment is still low but there are
those that will leave a job because of situations like these. The Nelson case shows that employers
cannot be so quick to terminate an employee simply because they request to use FMLA leave. This is
also a lesson for employees to learn from. If they are experiencing some issues, whether they are
business related or personal related, it should be communicated to their employer

The Social Problem Of Family Violence And Abuse
The social problem I decided to discuss is the subject of family violence and abuse, which includes
spouses and children. Now, as Ember and Ember explain in the text, in order to deal with violence
within families, we must first decide on what should be classified as abuse and what is not (Ember
Ember, pg. 230). The word abuse can have various definitions across cultures, as not everyone thinks
of it in the same way. To some, hitting a child is a perfectly acceptable form of punishment and of wife
beating can be seen in a male dominating household as a necessary act to keep a spouse in check. I
personally believe that abuse can be defined as the repeatedly cruel or violent treatment of someone,
mainly intended to do harm against that person. I believe that in order to combat this problem, there is
a few main actions that can be done that can at least reduce the amount of family violence we see
throughout cultures. For one, people need to acknowledge that family violence, both domestic
violence and child abuse is real and exists throughout countless societies and communities. The
second is to realize that family violence is not a necessary behavior and can actually have long lasting
and damaging effects on the people we love the most. The third action is to educate people in
alternative ways they can deal with their family members without having to resort to violence.
The first most important step in solving any problem is to actually express that there is a problem in

The True Value of Loyalty Essay
Now I was the one under the microscope, the one who had to prove my worthiness (Hosseini 184).
This quote demonstrates the role switch that encourages Amir to change the disloyal person he was
previously into the person he is at the novel s end. Hassan is constantlyys tormented by Amir s
meaningless tests to prove Hassan s loyalty. Now, it is Amir who has to prove to the world, and also to
himself that he is worthy of Hassan s endless sincerity and devotion. Khaled Hosseini does an
excellent job of portraying this transformation in his writing. Hosseini s novel, The Kite Runner,
illustrates the value of loyalty in the relationships between Hassan and Amir, Sanaubar and Sohrab,
and Amir and Baba. First is the relationship between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hassan spends his whole life believing his mother does not care about him or his father. By the time
Sanaubar does take an interest, Hassan already moves on onto the next stage in his life. Sanaubar
finally realizes what she misses by leaving Ali and Hassan. Sohrab is the perfect situation to show her
true loyalty, as shown through this excerpt: I remember Sanaubar came out of the hut, holding her
grandson, had him wrapped in a wool blanket. She stood beaming under a dull grey sky, tears
streaming down her cheeks, the needle cold wind blowing her hair, and clutching that baby in her
arms like she never wanted to let go. Not this time. (211).
The Kite Runner contains excellent examples of symbols, and a possible symbol in the book is
Sohrab. When reading a book, objects or things are distinctly seen as symbols rather than people.
Sohrab stands out as a character that has such an influence on others that he could be considered on of
The Kite Runner s symbols. He is the only thing that Amir can connect to from his former life after
Baba passed and Rahim Khan disappeared. He is the exact person that Sanaubar needed to come into
her life. Sanaubar comes back because something was missing: a son. Sohrab is her second chance to
demonstrate her loyalty, her opportunity for redemption. Trinter 3 Towards the beginning of the novel,
Hosseini makes the reader feel that Baba is purposely trying to be distant

The Symbol Of Fire In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
Fire is a powerful element that is known to be destructive, but in some situations it could mean more
then what is widely believed. Things can hold meaning behind them in a story that is not always what
people would assume. In William Golding s Lord of the Flies, the symbol of a fire is shown many
times, and its meaning progressively changes as the story goes on. The boys work to keep a fire going
in book to attempt to be noticed and rescued. The fire always had a different level of importance to
each boy, but there was always an overall underlying meaning behind it that affected them all. They
believed that it was just a fire to create smoke, but there was always something more to it that the boys
may or may not have been oblivious to. The symbol of the fire in The Lord of the Flies written by
William Golding begins as a representation of hope, develops into a divider, and concludes as a figure
of rescue. The fire that was created to be a smoke signal to anything that passes the island starts to
become a vision of hope for the boys. The fire is first brought into the story very early when Ralph
decides it is necessary if they want to be rescued. In the first meeting between all the boys they do not
address things like shelter right away, Ralph goes straight into how they can be saved. Golding writes
from Ralph s point of view when he is talking to the other boys, There s another thing. We can help
them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us.

Opposing Forces Civil Rights Movement
Opposing forces When looking back on the Sixties, one of the most dominating themes of that period
was the Civil Rights Movement. The quest for civil rights had been started long ago, when the black
man was freed from the bonds of slavery. Over a hundred years later, the problem of blacks being
treated as second class citizens still persisted. What could be done to correct the present situation?
Some, both blacks and whites, believed that non violence was the only means to achieve civil rights,
as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached. Others like Huey Newton of the Black Panthers believed that
violence was the only way. (W. H. Chafe: The Unfinished Journey, Oxford University Press. 1999,
p.316.) And lastly, some agreed with both ways ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. . (Interchange.org: Michael T. Kaufman, Stokely Carmichael, Rights Leader Who Coined Black
Power http://www.interchange.org/Kwameture/nytimes 111698.html). Principally, Carmichael s
approach called for a considerable revamping of the present structure within America. More
fundamentally, change had to begin within the black communities themselves. Blacks need to assert
their own influence and control over their neighborhoods, school districts, etc. They need to be active
participants in government, because any federal program conceived with black people in mind is
doomed if blacks do not control it. Obviously, blacks knew what was happening in their communities.
They knew what the problems were and what issues needed to be addressed. Without direct
involvement of black people in the decision making process, the black man s problems could and
would not be completely solved. The militancy evident in Black Power emanates from the strong,
unwavering quest to redefine black culture and make change, or, as Carmichael phrased it, take care of
business . . . by whatever means necessary. The fact that the black man would no longer put up with
white racist attacks was quintessential. Carmichael proclaimed, Black people should and must fight
back . . . White people must be made to understand that they must stop messing with black people, or
the blacks will fight back! All too often, lynchings,

Barnes Noble vs. Amazon
To attain a competitive advantage over Amazon.com, Barnes Noble needs to develop a proper strategy
and implement a successful marketing plan.
SITUATION ANALYSIS
Barnes Noble first must consider the issues and problems facing their company, and then perform an
opportunity analysis to determine their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their customers,
competitors, and company capabilities. In regards to the main concerns of Barnes Noble, the company
needs to worry about the uncertainties associated with the expected rapid growth of the Internet, the
changing profile of Internet users, increased competition and indeterminate future developments in
electronic retailing from publishers, wholesalers, and retailers, and intense ... Show more content on

With their traditional stores, Barnes Noble established a 2.5 million title database designed to help
consumers find books, but despite this advancement, the company s distribution structure is far
inferior to Amazon.com s. Both the tax exempt online purchased books and the traditionally purchased
ones are routed through the same distribution center in New Jersey and have to be separated from each
other to avoid confusion. Contrarily, their main competitor is much more efficient and cost reducing.
Amazon.com s West Coast operation permits non Washington state residents from paying sales taxes,
and instead of working with publishers, the company depends on wholesalers to provide fast
turnaround in shipment, allowing them to have few books on hand at their distribution center. In the
marketing channel, this just in time production reduces inventory levels, thereby lowering costs in
production and storeroom fees. Because of increased competition, Barnes Noble needs to develop a
plan to enhance their own market position and to challenge Amazon.com s channel advantage.
ALTERNATIVES
In order to deal with the issues posed above, Barnes Noble has to focus on a possible alternative
strategy. At this time,

Perry Scheme
Framework and Cultural Considerations The base of Perry Scheme refers to how college students
learn to acquire knowledge and create their own beliefs (Sabri, D., Rowland, C., Wyatt, J.,
Stavrakopoulou, F., Cargas, S., Hartley, H. 2008). Perry created nine well defined positions that
students experience while in college. Theses positions are delineated by the ways in which students
view themselves in relationship with what they believe (Kloss, R. J. 1994). The study done by William
Perry and his colleagues was conducted in the 1950 s. The population consisted mainly of white,
overwhelmingly male, upper class students at Harvard and Radcliffe University (Wiley, J. 1999). This
population represents the elite and do not represent the diversity of college student, such as our client

What This Cruel War Was Over Analysis
The Civil War caused a shift in the ways that many Americans thought about slavery and race.
Chandra Manning s What this Cruel War Was Over helps readers understand how soldiers viewed
slavery during the Civil War. The book is a narrative, which follows the life of Union soldier who is
from Massachusetts. Chandra Manning used letters, diaries and regimental newspapers to gain an
understanding of soldiers views of slavery. The main character, Charles Brewster has never
encountered slaves. However, he believes that Negroes are inferior. He does not meet slaves until he
enters the war in the southern states of Maryland and Virginia. Charles Brewster views the slaves first
as contraband. He believes the slaves are a burden and should be sent back to their owners because of
the fugitive slave laws. Union soldiers focus shifted before the end of the war. They believed slavery
was cruel and inhumane, expressing strong desire to liberate the slaves. As the war progresses,
soldiers view slaves and slavery in a different light. This paper, by referring to the themes and
characters presented in Chandra Manning s What this Cruel War Was Over, analyzes how the issue of
slavery and race shifted in the eyes of white Union soldiers during Civil War times.
Civil War The Civil War occurred between 1861 and 1865. Soldiers from the Union and Confederacy
disagreed on the purpose of the war. Southerners believed that slavery was the primary cause of the
war. Union soldiers were attempting to

Buffalo Restoration Debate Essay
Buffalo Restoration Debate
Restoration of the Bison is something that has been going on for the past two decades. As a matter of
fact, several Native American tribes have come together to form the Inter Tribal Bison Cooperative
(ITBC) which has been set out to bring bison back onto the American plains in the midwest. Bison
have an intimate relationship in the traditions and rituals of Native Americans. The importance of
bison within the culture has made bringing back the bison an important issue in the preservation of
wildlife. However, some of the arguments made by the ITBC show that the bison s economic value
should be the main factor why they should be brought back. Yet others involved in this cause suggest
that buffalo restoration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the basic arguments for the restoration of bison back onto the prairies involves the economic
benefits. Five of the nations ten poorest counties are located on Indian reservations (Manning,
WWW). With decreasing beef prices and increasing land values, the margin of profit continues to
narrow. A majority of the cattle industry that once was present in the midwest have sought greener
pastures east in states such as Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky (Popper, D). Another possible
opponent, the Forest Service also no longer seems to focus on maximizing their timber yields in the
midwest, but rather in northern California, Oregon, and Washington (Popper, D). Bison offer a
plausible solution due to their low cost (about half as much as cattle). Bison are also better adapted to
the environment and produce the same amount of meat which is higher in protein, lower in cholesterol
and fat, compared to cattle. In terms of land usage, bison graze and then move while cattle remain
where they are thus damaging the soil. Bison also eat a greater variety of grasses, something which
lacks with cattle. A proposal made by conservationists suggest that, Ranchers can easily switch to
buffalo and sell hunting rights, meats, hides, horns, and skulls at healthy prices (Popper DE, 1994).
Care of bison is also simple because unlike cattle, bison can withstand plains winters. Land value also
increases when it offers game

The Physics Of Electric Force
Theory Electric force can be defined as an attraction or repulsion between two particles that is directly
related to the charge of the two particles. So when a different voltage is applied to two metal plates the
opposite charges that are applied produce an attraction. To be able to figure out the magnitude of the
field on these plates one must know the charges, surface area, and the vacuum dielectric constant.
With knowing the value of the electric field one can then calculate the value of the electric force that is
being experienced between the two plates.
Experimental Description This experiment consisted of four separate parts. The first part was to adjust
the balance to make sure it was working properly, and to measure its ... Show more content on

That value was .0161m^2. Next we had to check the check the voltage for deflection by turning on the
power supply and adjusting the voltage. Once everything checked out properly we were able to move
onto the next section. In part 2 of the experiment we had to measure the deflection of the plates with
the laser. First we turned on the laser and measured the initial ho value of .52m, then we touched the
two plates together for the ht value and that number was .44m. Next we measured the distance from
the mirror to the ruler and it was 1.67m. With all of these values from the first two parts we could plug
them into the formula yo=(ho ht)(X/2D). This will give us the distance between our plates so when we
plugged those values into that equation we got yo to equal .00515m which is a very close value to our
original y estimate of .005m. In part three of the experiment we had measure deflection using mass, so
we started by placing .0001 kg in the center of the pan and then plugging it into the formula F=mg to
find out the force it was exerting on the top pan. This force was .00098N and it pushed the pans about
half of the way closer together from the original spot. Then the h1 value was obtained by reading the
spot of the laser on the ruler. This was repeated three times and we got h1 values of .475m, .473m, and
.475m. These values were then plugged into formula y1=(h1 ht)(x/2D). The three y1 values were
.00225m, .00212m,

Carpeaux entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts in 1844 and studied under the Romantic Sculptor François Rude. When these policies received government support, vast numbers of people of color, white women and men have gained access they would not otherwise have had. These gains have led to very real changes. Affirmative action programs have not eliminated racism, nor have they always been implemented without problems. However, there would be no struggle to roll back the gains achieved if affirmative action policies were ineffective. The implementation of affirmative action was America s first honest attempt at solving a problem, it had previously chosen to ignore. Congress also passed a number of civil rights laws barring discrimination against blacks in hotels, theaters, and other places. However, the South reacted by passing the Black Codes, which severely limited the rights of the newly freed slaves, preventing them in most states from testifying in courts against whites, limiting their opportunities to find work, and generally assigning them to the status of second or third class citizen. White vigilante groups like the Klu Klux Klan began to appear, by murdering and terrorizing blacks who tried to exercise their new rights. Legal ways were also found for circumventing the new laws; these included grandfather clauses , poll taxes, white only primary elections, and constant social discrimination against and intimidation of blacks, who were excluded form education and from any job except the most menial. Affirmative action has had its greatest amount of success in city, state, and government jobs. In order to let our data speak to us and help us to understand how the collaborative work is conducted between ITB and Royal Danish Library we have adopted grounded theory method as a main data analysis practice to work with. This decision involved summarizing cons and pros of using this approach. According to Glaser, Barney G Strauss (1967), using grounded theory involves development of theory rather by logical deduction then from experimental data itself. The publication of The Discovery of Grounded theory finds it relevant in practical applications and enable prediction and explanation of behavior. As our field setting is not often overflown with different actors we have decided to unlock behavioral patterns and get insight also on the profiles of employees. By this approach we have enriched our data, by being able to see connection between artifacts and articulation work, that draws an implication of artifacts in collaborative work. Moreover we have observed that each artifact might have different purpose of use as it is observed by different point of views from different subjects. The fact that we were able to actually observe appropriation in collaborative work, which can be described such as an assimilation of technology by group of people in completely different manner as designer firstly intended to, made us to logically distinguish between different ... • 8. European Union Pros And Cons Discuss the benefits of the European Union (EU) for its member states. Does the recent financial and debt crisis provide arguments against regional economic integration? The European Union The European union is an integrated system featuring some if not most of the countries in Europe. It is an economic and political agreement between the European member states that binds countries together through treaties, which have been signed by every country in the union. It was established back in the 1950s but, back then it only featured 19 countries in comparison to now when it features 28. For the countries featured in The European Union, there are several benefits the country and its citizens incur. These include, free mobility between member states as you can work, study and travel wherever you please within the European union. Also, as per occupytheory.org, over 3.5 million jobs have been created for the 320 million European citizens just over the last few years. However, not all their policies are effective as we saw with the common agricultural policy that led to the increase in price and oversupply of goods. Although this is a negative, the European union still manages to maintain integration through the development of deprived regions. • 9. Significance Of The Treaty Of Versailles Madison Welzbacher September 19, 2014 World History Significance of the Treaty of Versailles World War I was a devastating war that had a long lasting effect on every European country. After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, and his wife by the hands of a Serbian terrorist group known as the Black Hand. Germany urged Austria Hungary to attack Serbia, but Russia stepped up to protect the country. Germany ambushed Belgium, and proceeded to Russia, throwing Great Britain into the war due to their alliance with Belgium. As a result, the continent of Europe, including Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Austria Hungary, and France, was plunged into a great World War. The war lasted from 1914 to 1918, and it left Germany singled out as the catalyst. In November 1918, Germany finally agreed to an Armistice, a halt in the fighting, but they did not consider themselves to be surrendering. At the time, the Germans believed that they would play a role in constructing the treaty that would end the war, but when the time came, they were not allowed to participate. Germany was greatly angered by this, but there was nothing that they could do for their army had been disarmed. They had two choices: sign the Treaty or be invaded by the Allies. With no other option, the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in France. (Department of Finance and Personnel. (2015) They occur as a result of an imbalance between the demand for oxygen and its supply by the coronary arteries. Indeed, MI s can occur as a result of complications with anemia and heart spasms. However, the main cause of the condition is produced as a result of atheroma. Under normal physiological conditions platelets mediate the coagulation of blood and have an important role within the process of haemostasis. It is only when pathological processes arise that inappropriate and threatening activation of platelets becomes apparent. Indeed, it is a well known phenomenon that platelets are involved in the pathogenesis and progression of ischemia and myocardial infarctions and it is therefore this aim of this review to summarize the inappropriate activation within the cardiovascular events and how this is related to presentation of a myocardial infarction. Introduction Platelets represent an important linkage between inflammation, thrombosis, and atherogenesis, and have a critical role within the circulatory system in the maintenance of normal haemostasis. • 11. The Human Body Has Changed Over 3000 Years Ago The history of the human body has changed over 3,000 years ago. Many physicians based their findings primarily through intuitive thinking and ancient philosophers. The primary reason I chose this topic is because I love the anatomy and knowing all the organs, body parts, and the way the body functions. After my aunt was diagnose with type 2 diabetes, I had a strong desire to know, how could this be? I thought, Why not know the history behind it and the science itself. What exactly caused it? What specific organs in the body were affected by it? And is it preventable? Just take a look around science is all around you. You may not see it through the naked eye, but believe me it s there. The Father of Medicine , and Greek physician, Hippocrates is well known in today s era. He believed diseases of the human body were naturally caused; rather than by demons. While on the other hand, a Roman physician, Claudius Galen made fallacious judgements of the human body; primarily because he only dissected animals and not cadavers. Andreas Vesalius had been much more absurd; when performing dissection on dead bodies, in his anatomy class. Modern day philosophers Hippocrates, Claudius Galen, and Andreas Vesalius had a passion for science and incorporated their thoughts in skills into their own work. Hippocrates found factors, which contributed to the underlying causes of diseases, in the human body. During his time people, people believed that diseases were caused by some demonic ... For UK investors, all nine asset classes are worthy of investments, however the key in this scenario is to balancing the possible high risks while attempting to achieve the highest return using linear programming, As a result, boundaries have been set by the fund manager to maintain the risks within a feasible level. The money invested into each asset class must be between the lower bound and upper bound. Assumptions on how the manager estimated the annual return rate Firstly the fund manager could have used compound average; by calculating the combined returns from different periods could perfectly demonstrate investments with returns over a certain period of time. Secondly the fund manager could have used the Internal Rate of Return method to calculate the annual returns rates. IRR is more flexible than compound average as it covers multiple cash flows over certain periods of time. This method is more useful in this scenario because there are several asset classes available for investments. Finally, arithmetic mean is the simplest way of calculating annual rate of return. Just simply adding up all the returns in the past then divided by number of periods. The drawback is that arithmetic mean will be affected by negative figures whereas compound average and IRR don t. The turn from means of survival to sport has spurred the argument over whether or not hunting is humane or ethical. Hunting is very ethical because can help stop overpopulating species, slow overgrazing, and be used as a source of food. Overpopulating species can become very bad for an ecosystem. There are many organizations that oppose the idea of hunting citing that it is very inhumane to kill a defenseless animal. PETA, for example, is a group that views hunting as a barbaric act of savagery. They want to outlaw hunting because it hurts animals. They also preach about living a vegetarian life. This goes for same for his wife Teang, who carried the burden of taking care of six children and doing household chores, and as a result she became shapeless and thin. Both of their lives became miserable after having children despite their young age. Though public figures can be role models, not all of them should be because they might be but that doesn t mean all public figures can t be role models. Public figures have the ability to inspire others by showing their determination when times get tough and by showing their passion for their work, which motivates others to have the same mindset as them. Some people believe public figures should not be considered role models due to some of them doing immature and irresponsible off of the screen. The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is defined as the execution, or punishment by killing, of a person who has been found guilty of a specific, and usually serious, crime (Barber). Capital punishment should be enforced throughout the United States because it is a humane tradition that has been practiced for centuries, it deters crime, and it provides retribution and gives justice to the victimized. The most prevalent one is the inferiority of women over men, though the play also explores the differences between genders in general. First of all, Glaspell largely examines the repression of women in the 1900s. Women were highly looked down upon by men, and were seen mostly as housekeepers and child bearers, and were definitely not seen as intelligent people. The women in this play prove that the stereotypes against them are completely wrong. The men in this play exhibit some traditional stereotypes of men during the time period, such that they were aggressive and self centered. The women seem to be more cautious, intuitive and sensitive. These traits allow the women to come a lot closer to figuring out the murder than the men do. At one point in the play the women find a quilt that Mrs. Wright had been working on. It is basically saying that as long as everyone is eating, everyone is satisfied. During the Victorian Era, this was especially true for everyone, and they were constantly making preparations for their next meal. Food during the Victorian Era was very different from food today. Nowadays, to make a meal all we do is place something in the microwave, add water, and there is your meal, but during the Victorian Era it was not quite so easy. However, people overall were not necessarily healthier, considering the percentage of people who were considered to be in the lower class and lived in cities. The average city working class man s diet was inconsistent, very basic, and for the most part innutritious (Wohl). People of the working class in the country usually had to be self reliant when it came to food because they often did not have the money to buy food. They would raise their own meat and grow their own food. This was actually quite healthy considering the only added things were just natural spices and flavorings. People who lived in the city and were in the working class had a much harder time getting nourishing food since they did not have a place to make their own food. This led to their being distinctly malnourished as compared to the higher class and people in the country. The people of the higher class, though they often lived in the city, had a diet similar to those in the country, but with a larger variety of foods. They could go to restaurants to get their food, have food imported (for a price), or have others raise their own food for them. It was hard for people of the city working class and higher class to get the proper nutrients, but those from the farming industry tended to eat much better (Victorian Food). Their food was very fresh, and almost completely in its natural form which makes it quite healthy. Though the higher class got a large variety as well, their food had a few added things, and had often been shipped in which takes nutrients away. The health of food is something that is very different now because we rarely have food in its natural form, so we are getting less nutrients than some people during the Victorian ... Within the play, racism definitely plays a huge role in the public s views and stereotypes of Othello. The reader must consider these other characters motivations for their words, however. The reader must also consider the drastic difference between the ways that we understand race today, versus how our ancestors saw race back in the sixteenth century, when the story takes place. (David Stauth) During the 1800s and 1900s the West was popular for cattle ranches. Ranchers saw the wolves as pests destroying their profits due to the wolves feeding on the cattle. Thus began the beginning of the collapse of an ecosystem. With wolves missing from the ecosystem everything became greatly unbalanced leading to a domino effect. No longer fearing the wolves, elk began to freely graze which in turn began the destruction of foliage. The foliage destruction affected other animals that relied on the vegetation for sustenance and shelter. With the lack of vegetation, animals begin migrating elsewhere for food and harborage. Not only were the wolves gone, other animals began to either over populate or disappear along with the foliage. Hence the slow beginning of a land that would eventually become bare of life. Worse, his predecessor was hugely unpopular with the government, the morale of the Tories was low as losing a bunch of safe seat by election and electorates were tired on another term of ruthless Thatcherite rule. To handle that, Major decided to run the electoral campaign in a different way. He built up a cabinet based on their ability, not ideological preference, which including Hurd and Heseltine, his competitors in leader election, hoping to unite the certain Conservative voters (Bale,2011). At the same time, Lamont s pre election budget, which cutting the bottom of the income tax, tried to pull swing voters to the Conservatives (Marr,2007, pp.484 487). Moreover, he managed to run a negative campaign on Labour s capability on the economy, while remembering electorates the old labour fantasy high tax and spending with a socialist ambition. This successfully pushes swing voters from labour to conservatives. He also invested on campaigning in marginal seats ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Examples Of Injustice In Jubilee By Margaret Walker Injustice can never be stood for. American actress Amber Heard is stating that injustice is intolerable and instead of waiting for things to get better, you should work towards trying to create an equal society if you want to live a better life. Unfortunately, America s past has been full of injustice, especially during the Civil War. In the novel Jubilee written by Margaret Walker, injustice is incorporated throughout the book in many ways such as Vyry getting whipped, Randall Ware getting beaten by the Ku Klux Klan, and Jim being beaten by Innis Brown. Vyry, the main character of Jubilee who grew up a slave, is the character who is affected the most by injustice. She has been through it multiple times, as well as seen some of the people ... Vyry could tell Jim had been beaten because ...his shirt was in shreds and sticking to his skin and she [Vyry] saw his back was bleeding (482). Once Jim ran up into his room, Innis Brown came back into the house with the stick he had used to beat Jim. Innis greeted Vyry at the door by saying Where is that good for nothing trifling low down boy? I ain t begun to beat him. I feels like skinning his hide! (483). This caused Vyry to grow furious with Innis because she did not agree with the fact that her husband was beating her child. Under these circumstances, Jim was not the only one to be affected; the incident split up the whole family for some time, as well. The house was so gloomy that morning... Everybody ate in silence and no one paid attention to Harry s chatter or the dog... (488). Nobody talked to eachother for a few days, and Vyry was so abstracted that the children stopped trying to talk to her (488). Textual Analysis Psychology Scott and Craig lees (2010) organized an experiment that analyzed if product placement, inclusion of branded products that appear through audio or visual means, influenced audience engagement through levels of pleasure, arousal, and cognitive effort. The researchers focused on specific variables that may influence the effects product placement has on their audience. For example, engagement (attention), involvement( interest ), connectedness ( to the program), engrossment( absorption of media) , immersion (psychological state), and transportation (losing real world facets while viewing). The researchers conducted a quasi experimental approach, which means the researchers do not have full control over the experimental stimuli, which is a good approach when analyzing behaviors. They tracked the correlation between engagement and memory after showing the product placement. Their participants were 166 high school students in Sydney, Australia, ages 14 16 who were heavy movie watchers. They showed the participants the movie Legally Blonde, which had twenty two product placements within the movie followed by a post questionnaire. The questions simply asked if they noticed any of the products in the movie with yes/ no/not sure as the options for them to answer. For their engagement test, they utilized Mehrabian and Russell s pleasure, arousal, dominance scale, which measured pleasantness versus unpleasantness and positive versus negative feelings. Their results concluded that pleasure has a significant, positive relationship with brand recognition. • 44. The Social Problem Of Family Violence And Abuse The social problem I decided to discuss is the subject of family violence and abuse, which includes spouses and children. Now, as Ember and Ember explain in the text, in order to deal with violence within families, we must first decide on what should be classified as abuse and what is not (Ember Ember, pg. 230). The word abuse can have various definitions across cultures, as not everyone thinks of it in the same way. To some, hitting a child is a perfectly acceptable form of punishment and of wife beating can be seen in a male dominating household as a necessary act to keep a spouse in check. I personally believe that abuse can be defined as the repeatedly cruel or violent treatment of someone, mainly intended to do harm against that person. I believe that in order to combat this problem, there is a few main actions that can be done that can at least reduce the amount of family violence we see throughout cultures. For one, people need to acknowledge that family violence, both domestic violence and child abuse is real and exists throughout countless societies and communities. The second is to realize that family violence is not a necessary behavior and can actually have long lasting and damaging effects on the people we love the most. The third action is to educate people in alternative ways they can deal with their family members without having to resort to violence. The first most important step in solving any problem is to actually express that there is a problem in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hassan is constantlyys tormented by Amir s meaningless tests to prove Hassan s loyalty. Now, it is Amir who has to prove to the world, and also to himself that he is worthy of Hassan s endless sincerity and devotion. Khaled Hosseini does an excellent job of portraying this transformation in his writing. • 46. The Symbol Of Fire In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding Fire is a powerful element that is known to be destructive, but in some situations it could mean more then what is widely believed. Things can hold meaning behind them in a story that is not always what people would assume. In William Golding s Lord of the Flies, the symbol of a fire is shown many times, and its meaning progressively changes as the story goes on. The boys work to keep a fire going in book to attempt to be noticed and rescued. The fire always had a different level of importance to each boy, but there was always an overall underlying meaning behind it that affected them all. They believed that it was just a fire to create smoke, but there was always something more to it that the boys may or may not have been oblivious to. The symbol of the fire in The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding begins as a representation of hope, develops into a divider, and concludes as a figure of rescue. The fire that was created to be a smoke signal to anything that passes the island starts to become a vision of hope for the boys. The fire is first brought into the story very early when Ralph decides it is necessary if they want to be rescued. In the first meeting between all the boys they do not address things like shelter right away, Ralph goes straight into how they can be saved. Golding writes from Ralph s point of view when he is talking to the other boys, There s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. ... The quest for civil rights had been started long ago, when the black man was freed from the bonds of slavery. Over a hundred years later, the problem of blacks being treated as second class citizens still persisted. What could be done to correct the present situation? Some, both blacks and whites, believed that non violence was the only means to achieve civil rights, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached. Principally, Carmichael s approach called for a considerable revamping of the present structure within America. More fundamentally, change had to begin within the black communities themselves. Blacks need to assert their own influence and control over their neighborhoods, school districts, etc. They need to be active participants in government, because any federal program conceived with black people in mind is doomed if blacks do not control it. Obviously, blacks knew what was happening in their communities. They knew what the problems were and what issues needed to be addressed. Without direct involvement of black people in the decision making process, the black man s problems could and would not be completely solved. The militancy evident in Black Power emanates from the strong, unwavering quest to redefine black culture and make change, or, as Carmichael phrased it, take care of business . . . by whatever means necessary. The fact that the black man would no longer put up with white racist attacks was quintessential. Carmichael proclaimed, Black people should and must fight back . . . Perry created nine well defined positions that students experience while in college. Theses positions are delineated by the ways in which students view themselves in relationship with what they believe (Kloss, R. J. 1994). The study done by William Perry and his colleagues was conducted in the 1950 s. • 50. What This Cruel War Was Over Analysis The Civil War caused a shift in the ways that many Americans thought about slavery and race. Chandra Manning s What this Cruel War Was Over helps readers understand how soldiers viewed slavery during the Civil War. The book is a narrative, which follows the life of Union soldier who is from Massachusetts. Chandra Manning used letters, diaries and regimental newspapers to gain an understanding of soldiers views of slavery. The main character, Charles Brewster has never encountered slaves. However, he believes that Negroes are inferior. He does not meet slaves until he enters the war in the southern states of Maryland and Virginia. Charles Brewster views the slaves first as contraband. He believes the slaves are a burden and should be sent back to their owners because of the fugitive slave laws. Union soldiers focus shifted before the end of the war. They believed slavery was cruel and inhumane, expressing strong desire to liberate the slaves. As the war progresses, soldiers view slaves and slavery in a different light. This paper, by referring to the themes and characters presented in Chandra Manning s What this Cruel War Was Over, analyzes how the issue of slavery and race shifted in the eyes of white Union soldiers during Civil War times. As a matter of fact, several Native American tribes have come together to form the Inter Tribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) which has been set out to bring bison back onto the American plains in the midwest. Bison have an intimate relationship in the traditions and rituals of Native Americans. The importance of bison within the culture has made bringing back the bison an important issue in the preservation of wildlife. However, some of the arguments made by the ITBC show that the bison s economic value should be the main factor why they should be brought back. Yet others involved in this cause suggest that buffalo restoration ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the basic arguments for the restoration of bison back onto the prairies involves the economic benefits. Five of the nations ten poorest counties are located on Indian reservations (Manning, WWW). With decreasing beef prices and increasing land values, the margin of profit continues to narrow. A majority of the cattle industry that once was present in the midwest have sought greener pastures east in states such as Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky (Popper, D). Another possible opponent, the Forest Service also no longer seems to focus on maximizing their timber yields in the midwest, but rather in northern California, Oregon, and Washington (Popper, D). Bison offer a plausible solution due to their low cost (about half as much as cattle). Bison are also better adapted to the environment and produce the same amount of meat which is higher in protein, lower in cholesterol and fat, compared to cattle. In terms of land usage, bison graze and then move while cattle remain where they are thus damaging the soil. Bison also eat a greater variety of grasses, something which lacks with cattle. A proposal made by conservationists suggest that, Ranchers can easily switch to buffalo and sell hunting rights, meats, hides, horns, and skulls at healthy prices (Popper DE, 1994). Care of bison is also simple because unlike cattle, bison can withstand plains winters. Land value also increases when it offers game ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So when a different voltage is applied to two metal plates the opposite charges that are applied produce an attraction. To be able to figure out the magnitude of the field on these plates one must know the charges, surface area, and the vacuum dielectric constant. With knowing the value of the electric field one can then calculate the value of the electric force that is being experienced between the two plates. Experimental Description This experiment consisted of four separate parts. The first part was to adjust the balance to make sure it was working properly, and to measure its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That value was .0161m^2. Next we had to check the check the voltage for deflection by turning on the power supply and adjusting the voltage. Once everything checked out properly we were able to move onto the next section. In part 2 of the experiment we had to measure the deflection of the plates with the laser. First we turned on the laser and measured the initial ho value of .52m, then we touched the two plates together for the ht value and that number was .44m. Next we measured the distance from the mirror to the ruler and it was 1.67m. With all of these values from the first two parts we could plug them into the formula yo=(ho ht)(X/2D). This will give us the distance between our plates so when we plugged those values into that equation we got yo to equal .00515m which is a very close value to our original y estimate of .005m. In part three of the experiment we had measure deflection using mass, so we started by placing .0001 kg in the center of the pan and then plugging it into the formula F=mg to find out the force it was exerting on the top pan. This force was .00098N and it pushed the pans about half of the way closer together from the original spot. Then the h1 value was obtained by reading the spot of the laser on the ruler. This was repeated three times and we got h1 values of .475m, .473m, and .475m. These values were then plugged into formula y1=(h1 ht)(x/2D). The three y1 values were .00225m, .00212m, ...
