Black Power Movement
According to Freeland (2006) The black power movement was an all encompassing movement that
called for political, economic, and social changes for the African American community During the
black power movement African American men and women began thinking a lot more about
themselves positively and having a lot of pride about their race. The black power movement focused
on health, religion, education, and political values directly related to the black race. One interesting
area that was heavily emphasized during the black power movement was the importance of having an
education. During the 60 s and 70 s African Americans were going to colleges and universities in
droves. In that time period African American students wanted to attend an institution where they
would not be a minority, and have instructors who understand where they come from. The type of ...

According to Spurgeon (2009) African Americans face exclusion from social activities, unwelcoming
residence hall environments, and less friendly peers p.33. Typically African Americans want to avoid
this type of treatment so they choose a college that is more suited for them culturally. Another
common reason why this type of college is chosen by students is due to them wanting to learn more
about African American history which is a part of the curriculum Palmer (2010) mentioned several
reasons why it is hard for African American students aren t able to be engaged while at a PWI. He
cites the lack of involvement in campus activities such as student government. African American
students are likely to get involved with a black student union but very few of them want to take on a
leadership role in these organizations on campus. Palmer mentions that African American students are

Essay on Private Motivations for War in The Iliad
Private Motivations for War in The Iliad
Wars are often complex in nature and are fought for diverse reasons.
In the Iliad, powerful gods, great nations, and heroic people all fight for
different reasons. Each has private motivations to fight the war. These
private motivations are of special interest, because they help define the
consequences and outcomes of the war. The universal war of the gods, social
war of the Greeks and Trojans, and the war for Achilles honor are private
motivations of the Trojan war. These private motivations seem to influence
and shape each other in many distinct ways.

This intervention by Zeus
lead to another outbreak of war between the Greeks and Trojans. The universal
war of Athena and Hera versus Aphrodite had Zeus so caught up in it that he did
not want the social war to end. A god in the universal war once again created
the social war between Troy and Greece. The universal war was the cause of the
social war of Greece and Troy.
The private war of Achilles honor was an outgrowth of the social war
between the Greeks and the Trojans. During the social war, Apollo grew angry at
the Greeks for the abuse of his priest, Chryses. The Greeks had abused Chryses
when Agamemnon took Chryses daughter, Chryseis, during the raid of the town
of Thebes. Agamemnon wanted a replacement for Chryseis, so he took Briseis from
Achilles. This deeply wounded the honor of Achilles, and he decided to stop
fighting in the social war until his honor was amended. Achilles was angered by
an event that occurred in the social war, thus providing the need for Achilles
to reclaim his honor. The social war was the cause of the private war of
Achilles. The opportunity for Achilles to carry out his private war came after
the death of his comrade, Patroclus. Because Achilles would not fight,
Patroclus asked him if he could wear his armor. Patroclus thought

Cryogenics In Frankenstein
Cryogenics The science that addresses the production of and effects of very low temperatures.
Hundreds of celebrities have been frozen, where the body will be frozen in hydrogen until medicine
progresses enough to help the frozen. Cryogenics can prevent death, but Cryo sleep can have effects
that are a boon to mankind. In Halo, Cryo sleep is used when a ship`s crew has to travel an
innumerable distance for a mind boggling long time. Their bodies are frozen until the destination is
reached, then the bodies will be thawed out and no detrimental, lethal, or fatal effect will occur on
their health. However, Cryogenics sparks the controversy of cheating death. If you can cheat death are

War could destroy our planet and our race because, as we know, people will do anything to acquire
immortality and to join God on the throne of Heaven. Many aspire to become everlasting and drink
from the Fountain of Youth to heighten themselves above mortals and claim no way to die. Weapons
have been conceived that could destroy us in seconds and take away innocent lives just so few could
have the power of the Omnipotent. The monster in Frankenstein says, Like Adam, I was apparently
united by no link to any other being in existence; but his state was far different from mine in every
other respect. He had come forth from the hands of God a perfect creature, happy and prosperous,
guarded by the especial care of his Creator; he was allowed to converse with and acquire knowledge
from beings of a superior nature, but I was wretched, helpless and alone. (Pg.185) Adam was lonely,
so Eve was created to satisfy his needs. The monster longed for a friend, but Victor was acute in
knowing that his creature was almost invincible, and he foresaw the havoc to be wreaked on Earth if
another of the monster`s kind were to be created. The war(s) caused by the few lucky enough to

Realism and Freedom in Literature of Dwight D. Eisenhower
Realism and Freedom Dwight D. Eisenhower once stated, Freedom has its life in the hearts, the
actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed else like a flower cut from its
life giving roots, it will wither and die (Rather 1). The meaning of the term freedom is often open to
interpretation, and can represent different meanings to different groups of people. Up until the
Realistic time period, many Americans viewed freedom as being able to enjoy the rights given to them
under the U.S. Constitution. They saw this concept as something they had already attained, not
something that they had to strive towards. Many of them lived their lives based merely on emotion
and did not take into consideration that all men ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They veered off the path that Romantic authors had set for them and starting writing about topic that
were more important to the time period they lived in, such as the Civil War and abolishing slavery.
Many talked about the war and the abolition of slavery. In the article, The Rise of Realism , it is stated
that, Idealist championed human rights, especially the abolition of slavery... . These important issues
led to a change in literature from being based on feelings to being based on the harsh reality. The Civil
War substantially impacted literature by altering how authors portrayed everyday life and the common
person. During the Romantic time period, authors used their feelings and emotions as the foundation
for their writing. They wrote about topics such as nature and often included a dramatized hero as their
main character. Gary Arpin describes this change by writing, Reactions to grim casualties of the war,
as well as to the rapid urban expansion, inspired writers and artists to abandon their Romantic ideals
(448). As a result of the Civil War, authors moved away from this style of writing and instead focused
on realistic events and issues. Realist authors portrayed their ideas through short stories, letters, and
poems. These forms of literature became popular, because they were an easy way for soldiers to
communicate to their families and comrades about what was happening on the front lines. Major

The Effect Of Various Chemicals On Chili Peppers And The...
The investigation of pungency: qualitative and quantitative study of the various chemicals in chili
peppers and the fibers they activate Abstract: chili pepper is famous for producing pungency, the main
ingredients in which, capsaicin, can activate the fibers underlying the skin responsible for pain and
hotness. In addition, capsaicin is also suggested to have desensitization on fibers responsible for pain
and taste. As currently little research is conducted to investigate its specific mechanism, this paper aim
to solve that problem by handing a comprehensive proposal. In addition, it will also certify the
previous hypothesis that the activation of fibers may influence the reward system in the brain, which
in turns gives people a feeling of pleasure and addiction. In order to draw these conclusions, fiver
studies are proposed. Study 1 will primarily focus on the effect various chemicals in chili peppers
could produce as well as compare and sequence those chemicals from the most to the least effective.
High Performance Liquid Chromatography is required to examine the content. As it is suggested
previously, Study 2 will study the desensitization effect of capsaicin to fibers responsible for
mechanical stimulation with application of technics like microneurography and other psychophysical
methods. Study3, primarily, will examine the effect of capsaicin through brain activity to test if the
release of certain chemicals (e.g. dopamine) is consistent with the reduction of the

A Song For A Barbarian Feed Pipe Character Analysis
In this chapter, A Song For A Barbarian Reed Pipe , Kingston expressed the idea of cultural aspects
and how they can hinder a woman s ability in society. Kingston talked about how she was silent for
most of her life. However, it was not only her. As she stated, [t]he other Chinese girls did not talk
either...so I knew the silence had to do with being a Chinese girl, (cite). Their silence was based on
their traditional Chinese culture. Now, I can connect why Kingston brought up the way Chinese
women were because it can manifest unto their children, whether they were born in China, America,
or elsewhere. Kingston s character has always being tested by her mother Brave Orchid. Her mother
has put pressure on her since kindergarten to speak up, though her speaking abilities did not manifest
until later in her life. It was interesting to see that Kingston included such intimate, personal details
about her struggles in this chapter. Chinese women did not speak up in their families because they
were not the head(s) of the households; they kept to themselves. Yet, Brave Orchid is portraying the
complete opposite. She has picked up on American culture and how most people speak up for
themselves, which I believe is a conflict for Kingston. She was not like her mother at all. Kingston
struggled with both her American and Chinese cultures. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first I was confused at this fact, but then I realized why Kingston behaved better in her Chinese
school environment. It was due to the fact that tasks were done together. The students sand, read, and

point is on a group and not an individual. When the old teacher had been replaced with a new one, it
made Kingston shut down again. It was like American school; everyone was expected to do things

Facts About The United States
Facts About the United States I believe most of us have been to a foreign country at least one time in
his/her life. Visiting other countries during vacation is a typical way to explore new cultures as well as
new places. However, there is no feeling similar to the fact that you are going to live in a foreign
country by yourself. A country you know no one living in. What makes this feeling even harder is
what you hear about that country. Is what we hear about the US true? Or is someone trying to get
advantages from distributing unreal thoughts about the US? I keep asking myself these questions and
yet I have no answer. Before I came to the US, I heard hundreds of thousands of stories about the US.
Stories that I would not have traveled to the US if I had believed in. And until yet, there still are many
people who believe in these stories. One of the most common stories is that American people are hard
to deal with. I mean, if they do not like what you say or if you do something they do not like, you
would get killed right away. But, after I traveled to the US, I did not see that. Well, some people do
carry guns with them at all times, but they never kill anyone. They just use their guns for self defense.
So, if you do not hurt them, they will not hurt you. I believe people from all over the world have the
same concept, but I do not know why we ignore this fact and we only focus on American people. Not
only was carrying guns the only scary thought

She s The Man vs. Twelfth Night Twelfth Night and She s the Man are different types of work that
follow the same plot, but have many differences throughout to make them relatable to the specific
time period. The Twelfth Night is a play written by William Shakespeare in 1601. The plot is a
modern day love triangle turned badly. Over four hundred years later, DreamWorks comes out with a
new interpretation of the old play called She s the Man. Although there are notable differences
between the two, it is fairly easy to see where the two plots overlap and where they differ. Throughout

different views on the film and how well Fickman portrays Twelfth Night, most of the reactions by
viewers was that it was not taken very seriously with the messages it was sending but more of a

Our first important financial ratio is the current ratio. The current ratio measures a firms potential or

liabilities are due within a year, which makes the current ratio extremely important. The ratio is both a

An Analysis of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Chronicles of Narnia are veritably the most popular writings of C.S. Lewis. They are known as
children s fantasy literature, and have found favor in older students and adults alike, even many
Christian theologians enjoy these stories from Lewis; for there are many spiritual truths that one can
gleam from them, if familiar with the Bible. However, having said this, it is noteworthy to say that
Lewis did not scribe these Chronicles for allegorical didactics of the Christian faith, but wrote them in
such a well knit fashion that young readers might understand Christian doctrine through captivating
fantasy and thus gain an appreciation for it. With this in mind, and in the interest of this assignment,

This temptation of power is very like the story of Jesus being tempted by Satan in the desert. Satan,
like the Witch, tempts Jesus with power in exchange for service (Matt 4:8 9). In addition to yielding to
these various temptations, Edmund also agrees not to reveal his knowledge of the Witch to his siblings
and consequentially ends up lying to them about his discovery of Narnia. By doing this, Edmund
fulfills the antithesis of New Testament virtues of a good Christian in face of temptation. Lewis
artfully interlaces these Biblical themes of temptation into the character of Edmund. However,
Edmund s character is allegorical to the Biblical character of Judas, the betrayer. Edmund betrays his
siblings and the Beavers by going to seek the White Witch. All he could think about were his earthly
desires and wants Turkish Delight, and the thought of being a prince. Comparing a mere child to
Judas, however, is a very serious allegory for a children s novel. So, Lewis creates the idea of the
Witch giving Edmund enchanted Turkish Delight. By making Edmund s cravings for Turkish Delight
the fault of the Witch and not his own, Lewis alleviates some of the force of Edmund s offense. Once
again, taking biblical imagery and softening it to appeal to a young audience; and in the end of course,

Space Exploration And Tourism During The Cold War Of 1947
Previous to space colonization and tourism, one must explore the given planet; understanding the
problems and providing solutions to protect and aid the coming population. During the Cold War of
1947 through 1991, the United States and Russia fought for the accomplishment of space travel; the
moon was the primary target due to humans general understanding as well as the relative closeness to
the earth. Besides the sun, the moon was the utmost visible object in the sky. July 20, 1967, The U.S.
put the first man on the moon, One small step for man one giant leap for mankind. During December,
1972, Apollo 17 commander Gene Cernan set foot on the moon and is the last known man to do so.
Forty four years later, humans debate over whether or not man should set foot on the moon. Today, the
main question is, why humans should set foot on the moon? The company Space Exploration will
allow the furthering of scientific knowledge, improved energy crisis, international cooperation,
excavation of resources, bodily preparation for gravitational disadvantages, exploration preparation,
and surface liftoff medium. With the moon being three days away (with current technologies), humans
can improve overall understanding and life circumstances in relation to lunar exploration. The moon s

Differences Between Minority And Non Minority Small...
The aim of this quantitative correlational study is to understand the differences between how minority
and non minority small business owners approach succession planning. This study will use a ex post
facto design. An A priori power analysis test using the G*Power 3.1.9.2 software program will be used
to establish a minimum overall sample size of 134. Specifically, a Wilcoxon Mann Whitney (two
groups) statistical two tailed t test calculation with an effect size d of .5, an alpha level of .05, and beta
level of .80 will be used to determine a sample size group of 67 participants. The subjects for the
current study will consist of U.S. small business owners selected using multiple sampling frames.
Although multiple sampling frames hamper generalization to the population, it allows for convenience
and is suitable for difficult and rare populations (). Subjects in the study must fit the definition of
small business owner, one who establishes an independently owned and operated business for profit in
the United States and has less than 500 employees.
The current study has two types of variables: the independent and dependent variables. The dependent
variables are succession preparedness, enterprise characteristics, and proportion of businesses with
formal succession plans and the independent variable, small business owners approach to succession
planning. The independent and dependent variables will be measured using an electronic questionnaire
composed of items from

A Report On Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is described as a congenital disorder affecting exocrine gland function, with respiratory
effects, including excessive secretions, obstruction of the bronchial system, infection, and tissue
damage (Kowalczyk, 2014). Cystic fibrosis is also known as CF, and is the most common lethal
disease in white children (Kowalczyk, 2014).
People whom have CF have histologically normal lungs at birth. Lung damage occurs when secretions
from the enlarged bronchial glands gradually increase; this leads to the obstruction of the bronchial
system (Kowalczyk, 2014). Mucus clogs the airways and this plugging promotes infection such as
staph which causes more tissue damage; it also causes atelectasis and emphysema. Once this
destructive cycle starts, it is very difficult to stop and ultimately results in respiratory failure (Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation). Doctors will follow the diseases progression by chest x ray; it will show the
gradual worsening of structural abnormalities (Kowalczyk, 2014). CF does not just affect the
respiratory system, but also affects the exocrine system. Parts of the exocrine system affected are
salivary glands, the small bowel, pancreas, biliary tract, a female s cervix, and the male genital system
(Kowalczyk, 2014). The mucus in the pancreas stops the release of digestive enzymes; these digestive
enzymes are imperative for the body to break down food and absorb nutrients (Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation). Mucus can also cause liver

Eliot s Poetry Of A Divided Mind
Lips that would kiss | Form prayers to broken stone. To what extent and in what ways is Eliot s poetry
testament to a divided mind?
W.B. Yeats famously said that poetry was born from a quarrel with ourselves, and Faulkner later added
in his Nobel Prize Speech that good writing comes only from the problems of the human heart in
conflict with itself. These insights are no more apt than when applied to the poetry of T.S. Eliot.
Exploding onto the poetic scene in 1915, Eliot and his friend Ezra Pound were at the forefront of the
modernist movement. They reacted strongly against the traditional techniques of the Georgians and
others who came before them, who seemed to the modernists to be attempting to represent the modern
world in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his essay Tradition and the Individual Talent (1919) Eliot controversially argues that The emotion
of art is impersonal, and claims: Impressions and experiences which are important for the man may
take no place in the poetry. And yet, ironically, his poetry is littered with impressions and experiences
that were important to him: the similarities between Emily Hale and the lady in Portrait of a Lady; the
references to his friend Jean Verdenal in The Waste Land; and the later reference to Margate Sands,
where Russell and Eliot s wife went on holiday, all demonstrate the personal nature of Eliot s verse.
Furthermore, Eliot later admitted that he was somewhat obnoxious in his earlier essays. He writes
about Dante s work that we cannot afford to ignore Dante s philosophical and theological beliefs.
Thus, we can infer that the beliefs and the quarrels within Eliot s poems are beliefs and quarrels that
he felt within himself.
In Eliot s first poems, his mind seems to be focused largely on the conflict between a romantic and a
realist view of life, if by romanticism we mean the hope of something better. Influenced by the anti
romantic teachings of Irving Babbitt, a Professor at Harvard, Eliot s secular poems explore the
possibility of a romantic or idealist worldview, which is then denied. The Love Song of J. Alfred
Prufrock is a perfect example, and indeed the you and I of the first line can be interpreted as the two
dimensions of Prufrock s character, the

Economic geography is the study of the location, distribution and spatial organization of economic

Education Is An Important Aspect Of A Person s Life
Education is an important aspect of a person s life. From the moment that they start school in

Many children are able to go to good schools and get the education that they need in order to be
successful later in life. There are, however many children across the country who are not so lucky and
do not or cannot attend these types of schools. The reason for this disparity in educational inequality
are numerous and can include that there aren t any good schools in the neighborhood, schools employs

The act had mixed results over the years and people wonder if it was a success or not. In order to have
a better understanding of No Child Left Behind and its legacy we need to look at several factors.
These factors can include what is policy, the reason for the act being created in the first place, the
people that helped create the act and help implement it, and finally the legacy that it left behind. By
looking at these factors plus, others we can have a better understanding of how policy works and
know how this policy affected education for future generations.
Before talking about the policy itself, we first need to look at what issues/problems it was trying to
solve in the first place. A problem, according to Birkland (2016), is usually an undesirable situation
that according to people and interests groups, that can be alleviated by government action. This
definition of a problem seems to say that it is, a situation that no one wants to be in, and when a
problem does occur, it is something that people feel can be minimized by government action. An
example of the government taking action against a problem, could be with the country s issue of gun
control. Many people across the country feel that, gun violence is out of control and is a major
problem that needs to be solved now rather than later. These people feel that if the government were to
take the appropriate action, the amount of people that die every year due to gun violence, would be

Essay on Boethius and Plato s God
Plato was born in Athens, Greece around 427 B.C. He was always interested in politics, until he
witnessed his mentor and teacher, Socrates, death. After learning of the callousness of politics, Plato
changed his mind and eventually opened up The Academy, which is considered if not the first, one of
the first Universities. Students at the Academy studied many different fields of science, including
biological and astronomical. The students also studied many other fields, such as math. Plato
developed many views that were mathematical in nature. He expressed these views through his
writings. According to Dr. Calkins of Andrew University, Timaeus is probably the most renowned of
Plato s thirty five dialogues. [In it] Plato expresses that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Boethius was involved in a consulship for most of his life, and is probably most admired for the
translations he completed in his lifetime, which include, Porphyry s Introduction to the Categories of
Aristotle and probably Aristotle s Metaphysics, Physics, De Generatione et Corruptione, De Anima,
and Poetics (Watts 16). Boethius was imprisoned and then executed in 524 AD, while imprisoned and
before his execution he wrote his best known work, The Consolation of Philosophy. In relation to
Plato s Demiurge, Boethius, being a Christian worships God. Watts, in summarizing in part the The

is also classified as an external cause of order. This is connected with the orders of being and

Dehumanization In The Island Of Dr. Moreau
Dehumanization
In the book Civil War Stories the author Ambrose Bierce wrote about fictional war stories based on his
time in the Army. In all of the stories there is usually dehumanization and almost always a plot twist at
the end. In the book The Island of Doctor Moreau there is a mad scientist who lives on an island trying
to create the perfect beast person. Dr. Moreau dehumanizes a lot in this book in many ways such as
performing horrific surgery on animals. Dehumanization is when you treat someone like they re not a
human, making them seem like they re not worthy of human treatment. That is what the book Civil
War Stories and The Island of Dr. Moreau is about and what dehumanization is. One of the stories in

a pig, maybe even a bear, but he could not name it. They were men, they were soldiers. They did
nothing like humans would do. They crawled, they only used their knees and not their arms. Some

father s slaves that he had ridden before making believe they were his horses. He got on top of one of
the men and immediately the man flung him off. The man turned and lacked a jaw. His throat was a
big red gap with flesh hanging down. The man shook his fist at the child finally making him run away.
Then a fire beyond the belt of the woods suffused the whole landscape. On the boys way back he
realized the fire was burning down his own home. A woman lay dead in the house her forehead ripped
off and her brain stood out of her temple. In this story it shows dehumanization when the boy rides the

American Pie
Music is a form of literature that can be used as an instrument to express an artist s feelings through
their lyrics about a particular situation or topic. In the song American Pie , Don McLean expresses his
feelings on how the generation is changing and how the influence of music will die because of a tragic
event. The wordage and tone of McLean s lyrics are written in a negative manner but represented in a
positive and upbeat song. Don McLean s song, American Pie , reveals three significant feelings, which
include death, fear of change, and his devout faith.

Living through the sixties, McLean was able to express what he witnessed and how he felt. Death was
one of his major themes in his song. The deaths of three famous singers was a major let down in the
music world. It raised many questions as to who was going to take over the spotlight, and how music
will forever change. Change also played a significant role in McLean s song. Society at the time was
going through many changes that would form the United States into what it is today. Dealing with the
many notable deaths and the many changes going on in society, the people seemed to have too much
to handle and ultimately the breakdown of society began. McLean who was also dealing with the
struggles of the 60 s was able to find a safe haven with God. He used his strong faith to overcome the
struggles. Overall Don McLean put a lot of time and effort into his song American Pie . He took the
time and put together meaningful lyrics that became one of the most famous songs in history. Works

Stroke Definition
Stroke: A stroke involves loss of brain functions caused by a loss of blood circulation to areas of the
brain.
Causes: Occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or severely reduced,
depriving brain tissue of oxygen and food. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die.
In Ischemic cerebral blood flow is suddenly impaired by a thrombus or embolus.
In Haemorrhagic the rupture of a cerebral blood vessel causes bleeding into the subarachnoid space or
brain tissue.
Types of stroke: Haemorrhagic stroke and Transient ischemic stroke.

The Engine And Internal Combustion
Introduction In 1816 Reverend Robert Stirling patented an engine that produced motive power from
heated air that is known today as the Stirling Engine. In general terms, the Stirling Engine is an
external combustion heat engine that functions through piston motion resulting from the expansion
and compression of a working gas sealed within the engine. Invention of this technology predates the
gasoline and Diesel engines and significantly differs from internal combustion heat engines. It was not
until April of 1945 that Stirling s invention became popularly known as the Stirling Engine.
While many differences can exist between a Stirling Engine and internal combustion engine, three
primary features stand out. First, exclusion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first practical application of this technology was used to pump water from a quarry and it would
be some time before it would be scaled to a larger useful application. After periods of refining his
ideas and designs, he teamed with his brother James, a locomotive engineer, to register patents for
improvements in 1827 and 1840.
By 1943, these improvements translated to increased power conversion and output, and the Stirling
Engine model was implemented at a level capable of driving all machinery at the Dundee iron
foundry. However, frequent mechanical failures of the Stirling system resulted in its abandonment by
the Dundee foundry, leading to replacement by the steam engine.
One of the supporting arguments for the use of the Stirling Engine over early versions of the steam
engine was safety steam engine boiler explosions frequently lead to injuries and fatalities, along with
operational shutdowns. As steam engine boilers became safer the appeal of Stirling Engines declined
and the technology was marginalized to smaller domestic uses (e.g., pumping water). The advent of
the electric motor and smaller internal combustion engines further reduced the Stirling Engine s
market share, and by 1940, the technology was primarily limited to obscure applications.
The Philips Company was integral in carrying Stirling Engine technology forward on

The book The Road is set in a post apocalyptic nuclear world. The book is centered on two main

In summary, a breast lift will surgically fix breasts that are pendulous, nipples and areolas that droop

Criticism In Mariette Lippo s Confirmation Names
In Confirmation Names, Mariette Lippo describes a group of girls choosing their patron saints.
Through the use of irony and syntax, the author scorns the Catholic Church s treatment towards
adolescent girls and the standards they are held under. However, when using a feminist criticism,
Lippo s disdain turns into anger towards society, not just the Catholic faith alone. When under an
archetypal criticism, the piece focuses more on the religious stereotypes of the harsh, reserved nun and
the classic rebellious Catholic schoolgirls, and thus provokes a sense of pity for the girls and an
automatic cringe worthy distaste for the nuns. Both the close reading and literary criticisms produce
new tones and shed different lights on the conflicting aspects of Confirmation Names. Initially,
Confirmation Names explains the process behind confirmation names for young Catholic girls.
However, through the use of language and literary devices, Lippo clearly presents a defiant tone
towards the way young girls are restricted in the Catholic faith. Lippo strategically addresses each
young girl in a new paragraph, reflecting Catholic nuns tones toward each young girl s vice. However,
though Lippo introduces the nuns sentiments in her piece, she also provides a sense of defiant
solidarity for the young girls by using the inclusive words we and us when interjecting herself into the
narration We studied the saints... (Lippo 1), and None of us, of course, chose Magdalen... (Lippo

The black power movement focused on health, religion, education, and political values directly related to the black race. Typically African Americans want to avoid this type of treatment so they choose a college that is more suited for them culturally. Another common reason why this type of college is chosen by students is due to them wanting to learn more about African American history which is a part of the curriculum Palmer (2010) mentioned several reasons why it is hard for African American students aren t able to be engaged while at a PWI. Gary Arpin describes this change by writing, Reactions to grim casualties of the war, as well as to the rapid urban expansion, inspired writers and artists to abandon their Romantic ideals (448). As a result of the Civil War, authors moved away from this style of writing and instead focused on realistic events and issues. Realist authors portrayed their ideas through short stories, letters, and poems. These forms of literature became popular, because they were an easy way for soldiers to communicate to their families and comrades about what was happening on the front lines. Major ... • 8. The Effect Of Various Chemicals On Chili Peppers And The... The investigation of pungency: qualitative and quantitative study of the various chemicals in chili peppers and the fibers they activate Abstract: chili pepper is famous for producing pungency, the main ingredients in which, capsaicin, can activate the fibers underlying the skin responsible for pain and hotness. In addition, capsaicin is also suggested to have desensitization on fibers responsible for pain and taste. As currently little research is conducted to investigate its specific mechanism, this paper aim to solve that problem by handing a comprehensive proposal. In addition, it will also certify the previous hypothesis that the activation of fibers may influence the reward system in the brain, which in turns gives people a feeling of pleasure and addiction. In order to draw these conclusions, fiver studies are proposed. Study 1 will primarily focus on the effect various chemicals in chili peppers could produce as well as compare and sequence those chemicals from the most to the least effective. High Performance Liquid Chromatography is required to examine the content. As it is suggested previously, Study 2 will study the desensitization effect of capsaicin to fibers responsible for mechanical stimulation with application of technics like microneurography and other psychophysical methods. Study3, primarily, will examine the effect of capsaicin through brain activity to test if the release of certain chemicals (e.g. dopamine) is consistent with the reduction of the ... • 12. A Song For A Barbarian Feed Pipe Character Analysis In this chapter, A Song For A Barbarian Reed Pipe , Kingston expressed the idea of cultural aspects and how they can hinder a woman s ability in society. Kingston talked about how she was silent for most of her life. However, it was not only her. As she stated, [t]he other Chinese girls did not talk either...so I knew the silence had to do with being a Chinese girl, (cite). Their silence was based on their traditional Chinese culture. Now, I can connect why Kingston brought up the way Chinese women were because it can manifest unto their children, whether they were born in China, America, or elsewhere. Kingston s character has always being tested by her mother Brave Orchid. Her mother has put pressure on her since kindergarten to speak up, though her speaking abilities did not manifest until later in her life. It was interesting to see that Kingston included such intimate, personal details about her struggles in this chapter. Chinese women did not speak up in their families because they were not the head(s) of the households; they kept to themselves. Yet, Brave Orchid is portraying the complete opposite. She has picked up on American culture and how most people speak up for themselves, which I believe is a conflict for Kingston. She was not like her mother at all. Visiting other countries during vacation is a typical way to explore new cultures as well as new places. However, there is no feeling similar to the fact that you are going to live in a foreign country by yourself. A country you know no one living in. What makes this feeling even harder is what you hear about that country. Is what we hear about the US true? Or is someone trying to get advantages from distributing unreal thoughts about the US? I keep asking myself these questions and yet I have no answer. Before I came to the US, I heard hundreds of thousands of stories about the US. Stories that I would not have traveled to the US if I had believed in. And until yet, there still are many people who believe in these stories. One of the most common stories is that American people are hard to deal with. I mean, if they do not like what you say or if you do something they do not like, you would get killed right away. But, after I traveled to the US, I did not see that. Well, some people do carry guns with them at all times, but they never kill anyone. They just use their guns for self defense. So, if you do not hurt them, they will not hurt you. I believe people from all over the world have the same concept, but I do not know why we ignore this fact and we only focus on American people. They are known as children s fantasy literature, and have found favor in older students and adults alike, even many Christian theologians enjoy these stories from Lewis; for there are many spiritual truths that one can gleam from them, if familiar with the Bible. However, having said this, it is noteworthy to say that Lewis did not scribe these Chronicles for allegorical didactics of the Christian faith, but wrote them in such a well knit fashion that young readers might understand Christian doctrine through captivating fantasy and thus gain an appreciation for it. By doing this, Edmund fulfills the antithesis of New Testament virtues of a good Christian in face of temptation. Lewis artfully interlaces these Biblical themes of temptation into the character of Edmund. However, Edmund s character is allegorical to the Biblical character of Judas, the betrayer. Edmund betrays his siblings and the Beavers by going to seek the White Witch. All he could think about were his earthly desires and wants Turkish Delight, and the thought of being a prince. Comparing a mere child to Judas, however, is a very serious allegory for a children s novel. So, Lewis creates the idea of the Witch giving Edmund enchanted Turkish Delight. • 25. A Report On Cystic Fibrosis Cystic Fibrosis Cystic fibrosis is described as a congenital disorder affecting exocrine gland function, with respiratory effects, including excessive secretions, obstruction of the bronchial system, infection, and tissue damage (Kowalczyk, 2014). Cystic fibrosis is also known as CF, and is the most common lethal disease in white children (Kowalczyk, 2014). People whom have CF have histologically normal lungs at birth. Lung damage occurs when secretions from the enlarged bronchial glands gradually increase; this leads to the obstruction of the bronchial system (Kowalczyk, 2014). Mucus clogs the airways and this plugging promotes infection such as staph which causes more tissue damage; it also causes atelectasis and emphysema. Once this destructive cycle starts, it is very difficult to stop and ultimately results in respiratory failure (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation). Doctors will follow the diseases progression by chest x ray; it will show the gradual worsening of structural abnormalities (Kowalczyk, 2014). CF does not just affect the respiratory system, but also affects the exocrine system. Parts of the exocrine system affected are salivary glands, the small bowel, pancreas, biliary tract, a female s cervix, and the male genital system (Kowalczyk, 2014). • 26. Eliot s Poetry Of A Divided Mind Lips that would kiss | Form prayers to broken stone. To what extent and in what ways is Eliot s poetry testament to a divided mind? W.B. Yeats famously said that poetry was born from a quarrel with ourselves, and Faulkner later added in his Nobel Prize Speech that good writing comes only from the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself. These insights are no more apt than when applied to the poetry of T.S. Eliot. Exploding onto the poetic scene in 1915, Eliot and his friend Ezra Pound were at the forefront of the modernist movement. They reacted strongly against the traditional techniques of the Georgians and others who came before them, who seemed to the modernists to be attempting to represent the modern world in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his essay Tradition and the Individual Talent (1919) Eliot controversially argues that The emotion of art is impersonal, and claims: Impressions and experiences which are important for the man may take no place in the poetry. And yet, ironically, his poetry is littered with impressions and experiences that were important to him: the similarities between Emily Hale and the lady in Portrait of a Lady; the references to his friend Jean Verdenal in The Waste Land; and the later reference to Margate Sands, where Russell and Eliot s wife went on holiday, all demonstrate the personal nature of Eliot s verse. Furthermore, Eliot later admitted that he was somewhat obnoxious in his earlier essays. He writes about Dante s work that we cannot afford to ignore Dante s philosophical and theological beliefs. Thus, we can infer that the beliefs and the quarrels within Eliot s poems are beliefs and quarrels that he felt within himself. In Eliot s first poems, his mind seems to be focused largely on the conflict between a romantic and a realist view of life, if by romanticism we mean the hope of something better. Influenced by the anti romantic teachings of Irving Babbitt, a Professor at Harvard, Eliot s secular poems explore the possibility of a romantic or idealist worldview, which is then denied. Another detective and union official claimed in his deposition that Griffin was a rat because he went to internal affairs instead of the union (Marzulli, 2013). In all of the stories there is usually dehumanization and almost always a plot twist at the end. In the book The Island of Doctor Moreau there is a mad scientist who lives on an island trying to create the perfect beast person. Dr. Moreau dehumanizes a lot in this book in many ways such as performing horrific surgery on animals. Dehumanization is when you treat someone like they re not a human, making them seem like they re not worthy of human treatment. After his fake war was over he encountered an animal, it was a rabbit. He got so scared he ran, jumped in between two rocks and cried himself to sleep. After a few hours passed he woke up and could feel the chills of the night. He walked to an opening in the area and saw a figure that seemed to be a large animal. He thought it might be a dog or a pig, maybe even a bear, but he could not name it. They were men, they were soldiers. They did nothing like humans would do. They crawled, they only used their knees and not their arms. Some layed motionless, they were dead. Nothing at all about them was human. He thought they were like his father s slaves that he had ridden before making believe they were his horses. He got on top of one of the men and immediately the man flung him off. The man turned and lacked a jaw. His throat was a big red gap with flesh hanging down. The man shook his fist at the child finally making him run away. Then a fire beyond the belt of the woods suffused the whole landscape. On the boys way back he realized the fire was burning down his own home. A woman lay dead in the house her forehead ripped off and her brain stood out of her temple. In this story it shows dehumanization when the boy rides the soldier like he is an animal. That ... In general terms, the Stirling Engine is an external combustion heat engine that functions through piston motion resulting from the expansion and compression of a working gas sealed within the engine. Invention of this technology predates the gasoline and Diesel engines and significantly differs from internal combustion heat engines. The first practical application of this technology was used to pump water from a quarry and it would be some time before it would be scaled to a larger useful application. After periods of refining his ideas and designs, he teamed with his brother James, a locomotive engineer, to register patents for improvements in 1827 and 1840. By 1943, these improvements translated to increased power conversion and output, and the Stirling Engine model was implemented at a level capable of driving all machinery at the Dundee iron foundry. However, frequent mechanical failures of the Stirling system resulted in its abandonment by the Dundee foundry, leading to replacement by the steam engine. One of the supporting arguments for the use of the Stirling Engine over early versions of the steam engine was safety steam engine boiler explosions frequently lead to injuries and fatalities, along with operational shutdowns. As steam engine boilers became safer the appeal of Stirling Engines declined and the technology was marginalized to smaller domestic uses (e.g., pumping water). The advent of the electric motor and smaller internal combustion engines further reduced the Stirling Engine s market share, and by 1940, the technology was primarily limited to obscure applications. The Philips Company was integral in carrying Stirling Engine technology forward on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Criticism In Mariette Lippo s Confirmation Names In Confirmation Names, Mariette Lippo describes a group of girls choosing their patron saints. Through the use of irony and syntax, the author scorns the Catholic Church s treatment towards adolescent girls and the standards they are held under. However, when using a feminist criticism, Lippo s disdain turns into anger towards society, not just the Catholic faith alone. When under an archetypal criticism, the piece focuses more on the religious stereotypes of the harsh, reserved nun and the classic rebellious Catholic schoolgirls, and thus provokes a sense of pity for the girls and an automatic cringe worthy distaste for the nuns. Both the close reading and literary criticisms produce new tones and shed different lights on the conflicting aspects of Confirmation Names. Initially, Confirmation Names explains the process behind confirmation names for young Catholic girls. However, through the use of language and literary devices, Lippo clearly presents a defiant tone towards the way young girls are restricted in the Catholic faith. Lippo strategically addresses each young girl in a new paragraph, reflecting Catholic nuns tones toward each young girl s vice. However, though Lippo introduces the nuns sentiments in her piece, she also provides a sense of defiant solidarity for the young girls by using the inclusive words we and us when interjecting herself into the narration We studied the saints...
