done, but two of them stand apart, because they re murders. Whether the death of
Lupito, himself a murderer, at the hands of the town mob that includes Antonio s dad
is justified or not doesn t change the fact that he is the victim of a violent murder.
Raving in the river, he s shot down by multiple bullets, and Antonio witnesses the
whole thing.
Antonio s multiple tragedies made him a stronger human being throughout the novel.

Jamaica Kincaid immerses the reader into her essay A Small Place through the use
of second person point of view, continually referring to the reader as you. She
characterizes the reader as a tourist from a privileged Western nation and narrates the
experiences and thoughts of the reader while visiting Antigua for the first time. By
portraying the reader as the tourist through second person narrative, Kincaid criticizes
the ignorance of Eurocentric assumptions, as well as the total superficiality of
Western tourism. Ultimately, this technique allows her to capture her disdain for
Eurocentrism, alienating the reader from Antiguan culture.
In the first sentence of the essay, Kincaid promptly employs second person
narrative by addressing the reader, If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what

My first practicum placement for this semester, I was placed at Henry F. Moss
Middle School. When I found out that I had to observe and teach a lesson to
middle schoolers, I was not thrilled. I have never had any interest in teaching
middle school so I was dreading the next one hundred and forty observation hours.
Despite my initial thoughts, I enjoyed my time at Moss Middle. The teacher that I

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was as talented as he was troubled. For every
masterpiece he created with a paintbrush, it seems there was an accompanying
instance of trouble created with a sword. Defined by police reports and remembered
by his paintings Caravaggio truly stands as one of the most accomplished and yet
least approachable painters to influence the Baroque period. Though his career was
short, spanning only eighteen years, Caravaggio was able to produce upwards of

While in Naples, Caravaggio completed The Seven Works of Mercy (Fig. 5) to be
housed in the church of Pio Monte della Misericordia. Richard Spear described this
image as powerful mannered chaos that begins a pattern of such confusingly
positioned bodies that often it is difficult to tell which limb belongs to whom .
This anarchy can be directly contrasted to his earlier works, such as the Boy with a
Basket of Fruit (Fig. 1), where a singular subject is serenely identified. While
Caravaggio s expert use of light and shadow remains similar, the human form and
the emotions the subjects evoke are drastically changed. Gone are the calm
Caravaggio pieces, having been replaced by pandemonium and turmoil. The soft
white seen on the drapery of androgynous boys will not come up in Caravaggio s
work again, as he now chooses to cloak his subjects in darkness. Roger Hinks
expresses a similar explanation in his book Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio:

The Causes And Effects Of Colonialism In Africa
Colonialism put a significant burden on colonies and once these territories were
decolonized, they were no longer self sufficient. Even after these territories regained
their autonomy, they were still left to struggle after being exploited for decades. To
begin, the French and British colonized Africa and left these territories to pay for
operations the French and British implemented, such as military, private services to
whites , and further education. These territories had very little to begin with because
of slavery, so massive debts were accumulated. For instance, Senegal, as mentioned
earlier, was colonized by France in the nineteenth century. It, along with other
colonies along the west African coast, were exploited for their resources and were
left to pay for the damages after not only World Wars I and II, but also from in
country fighting as well. Siji Jabbar, author of How France loots its former colonies
says, France organized its colonies in a system of compulsory solidarity which
consisted of obliging the states to put 65% of their foreign currency reserves into the
French Treasury, plus 20% for liabilities. This means these countries only ever have
access to 15% of their own money! (Jabbar, 2013). Ultimately, colonization did just
permit the occurrence of physical slavery, but colonies were looted and forced to sign
binding contracts that leave them penniless indefinitely, but are also hard to get out
of. Second, some of these territories had some natural resources that were considered
valuable. Unsurprisingly, the colonists exploited these natural resources, such as the
gold mines in the Congo. When colonialization ended, these developing nations were
left with no natural resources and struggled to find ways to be independent, since the
sectors they relied on to make money were abused and destroyed under European and
American control. An interesting example of colonial exploitation occurred along the
coast of West Africa in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Rene

more attention to bullying and the harm it can do after the 1999 massacre at

The Grittier Hero
The Western has traditionally been thought of as an American entity. Forging the
west and its frontier is what the nation sees as its identity. There are other versions of
the this traditionally American story. Countries outside the nation intrigued by the
genre have taken the Western to other levels and depicted the characters in a
different light. European and Asian films have a divergent perspective of the
traditional lone man that comes to save the day. Films such as The Good, the Bad,
and the Ugly,by Sergio Leone, Seven Samurai, by Akira Kurosawa created men that
were not the America type of western men. These new interpretations were men that
are clearly not good nor truly evil, but blurred. These films have main characters,
whether alone or in groups that are closer to the antagonists in the films. Other
countries viewed Western heroes as selfish and individualistic, grittier, and in
opposite of the white American hero. Typically in the American version of the
Western, the hero does usually have a jaded past, however, like characters in the
Virginian and John Ford films with John Wayne, the main protagonist is humble and

Symbolism In The Veldt By Bradbury
Some parents believe that the only way to love and please their children is through
giving them whatever they desire. Bradbury, however, contradicts this belief by
saying that parents need to discipline their children if they really love them. In his
short story, The Veldt, he builds upon this statement by creating a story around two
permissive parents, Lydia and George, and their kids, Wendy and Peter. The parent

intentions were to make their children happy, but in the end, all of their pampering

in this house has everything they ever wanted, which emphasizes the significance
of how the children turn out because of their parents spoiling. The Happy Life
Home does everything for the Hadley s; the house clothed and fed and rocked
them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them (Bradbury 1). This showed
that the Hadley s did not do anything on their own; the children had no
responsibilities, and never had to do anything by themselves. Also, George and Lydia
never really told their children no because they believed that ... nothing s too good for
