Essay About Character
Crafting an essay on the concept of "Essay About Character" presents a unique challenge,
primarily because the topic itself is broad and multifaceted. Character, in its essence,
encompasses a vast array of qualities, traits, and behaviors that define an individual's moral and
ethical makeup. Attempting to encapsulate such a complex notion within the confines of an
essay demands careful consideration and thoughtful analysis.
Firstly, delving into the exploration of character necessitates a thorough understanding of various
philosophical, psychological, and sociological perspectives. One must navigate through a
plethora of theories and frameworks proposed by eminent scholars and thinkers, ranging from
Aristotle's concept of virtue ethics to modern psychological theories on personality development.
This requires extensive research and critical thinking to synthesize divergent viewpoints into a
cohesive argument.
Furthermore, the task of elucidating the significance of character in different contexts adds
another layer of complexity. Whether discussing the role of character in literature, examining its
relevance in leadership and decision-making, or evaluating its impact on societal norms and
values, each angle demands nuanced analysis and compelling evidence.
Moreover, the subjective nature of character complicates the writing process further. What one
person perceives as admirable traits may differ significantly from another's perspective,
influenced by cultural, religious, and personal beliefs. Balancing objectivity with subjectivity
while elucidating the essence of character requires finesse and diplomacy in articulation.
Additionally, crafting an engaging and insightful essay on character necessitates more than just
theoretical analysis. Incorporating real-life examples, anecdotes, and case studies adds depth and
authenticity to the discussion, illustrating how character manifests in everyday situations and
influences individual choices and actions.
In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of "Essay About Character" is undeniably
challenging, demanding a comprehensive understanding of diverse theoretical frameworks, adept
critical thinking skills, and the ability to navigate the complexities of subjective interpretation.
However, despite its intricacies, delving into the exploration of character is both intellectually
stimulating and profoundly rewarding, offering valuable insights into the human condition and
the principles that govern moral and ethical conduct.

Al-Qaeda s Air Travel
While terrorism has affected airline travel for decades, the Al Qaeda perpetrated
attacks of September 11, 2011, resulted in the most significant modifications to
U.S. air travel policy. Prior to the 9/11 attacks, hijackings like the Dawson s Field
incident drove international changes to passenger security screening protocols
(Clark, 2016). Even still, incidents like 1988 s downing of Pan Am Flight 103 over
Lockerbie, Scotland, occurred before electronic baggage scanning became standard
(Donavan, Delawala, and Santichen, 2009). Despite these tragic events, Al Qaeda
and its affiliates actions, both those successful and failed, drove the U.S. s changes
to law and policy for air travel. Al Qaeda s immediate, and possibly most
overarching, impact
The Second Criterion Is Quality
The second criterion is quality. How has the ACA affected the ability of patients to
obtain quality care? According to the White House, quality of care has improved
in a couple of important ways (Somanader, 2015). First, they argue patients are
healthier when they leave a hospital stay, describing how from 2010 to 2013,
50,000 fewer people have died as the result of hospital errors and infections. They
also explain that new care models allow patients to access their doctor when they
need to. However, the White House also acknowledges that more work needs to be
done (Somander, 2015). One significant way the ability to obtain quality care has
been impacted is through the removal of pre existing condition exclusions. Patients

One that requires the cooperation of government, insurance companies, hospitals, and
individual doctors.
Finally, the impact of the ACA on the cost of the health care system will be
evaluated. Overall, health care spending in the U.S. has continued to grow but at a
much slower rate. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported that
health care spending grew at the lowest rate ever recorded (Hartman, Martin,
Lassman, Catlin, 2014). This was in part due to the ACA. Other factors included
slow economic growth and increases in private health insurance spending.
Additionally, a greater number of high deductible insurance plans and an increase
in the share of health costs for which the patient is responsible have also increased.
It is also possible that people not accessing health care is a factor, in addition to
cost controls (Fernandez as cited in Ungar O Donnell, 2014). There is also the
possibility that spending will grow faster as the economy continues to improve
(Ungar O Donnell, 2014). The growth of health spending has slowed, however the
impact of the ACA on this is unclear. According the the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services, the law is at least in part responsible for this. However, faster
growth may return as the economy grows. The evidence is clearest that the ACA has
improved access as far as it has increased the number of Americans with health
insurance. As far as the other
Pencey Prep Research Paper
When I tell you about Pencey prep, the third boarding school I flunked out of,
everything is pretty much the damn same as all the other boarding schools I went
to. First off, it is all a bunch of phonies who go there that have a lot of dough and
their parents are all rich people who never see their kids. You would think that
Pencey prep would serve us good meals; seeing how it is a boarding school.
Everyone who goes here is rich and snobby and we get to eat shit half of the week
and on Sundays we get a dried up steak with lumpy potatoes to impress our parents
on visitors day. The food was not even the worst of the school it was the lying phony
kids who stole things and did not have the stones to admit they did it because they are
so phony.
The Importance Of Living In A Big City In California
Living in a big city has its perks such as great job opportunities and depending on
that city it can have great weather. One city that I really think everyone would want
to live in is around the Southern shore of California because the weather is beautiful
around there and it s always been such a breathing taking place to live at for the
west.. Living around Southern shore Californiais a dream for everyone because it has
a great climate, job opportunities, and it s next to the ocean which is a huge plus..
But living near a body of water can be really dangerous, such as hurricanes, solving
is California is a big risk, living in Arizona is a lot more safe. Living in Arizona
would be nice as well Arizona is not like California it s more dry and hot, but the
job opportunities there and it s a really friendly place to live in because it s about
two hours to get to California and 3 hours for Las Vegas which are both popular
places to visit. Living near the west coast would be such an amazing experience for
everyone because the people there are so nice and they re young hopefuls looking
for the next big thing, some are just trying to live their dream, it takes a lot of guts
just to pack up your stuff and leave. To describe the west in just one word is
dreaming, because lots of people dream to go over there and some go over there,
but they don t make it so they go back to their hometown feeling worthless. Arizona
is a safe bet because you are not expecting the weather to be as
History Of The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was an extraordinary event that made everyone crazy for
gold. This event took place in Coloma, California. When storekeeper, James
Marshall, found gold at John A. Sutter s Sutter Mill on January 24, 1848. He
discovered that the rivers were filled with gold and tried to keep the secret to
himself. People soon grew suspicious of the man so they took a trip to the sawmill.
The men who when to the sawmill came back with gold dust. Once they heard that
someone had found gold anyone was desperate for gold. From that point on the
race for gold was on. People looked wherever they could in hopes of finding gold.
Men would depart to search for gold, which left numerous amounts of women to do
the work their husbands would leave.
Bedroom Observation
The duration of the experiment lasted 3 days total, 2 consecutive days and
1nonconsecuative day due to weather issues. The data collection of the trays was
around 4pm each day and the experiment was conducted in the field on the
intersection of Morgan Street and Taylor Street on University of Illinois Campus.
The two independent variables being tested were nutritional value of food which
was being measured by protein content and where the tray was is being placed
outside. The 4 trays come out to be cover, high protein , cover, low protein , no
cover, high protein , and no cover, low protein . All the supplies needed for the
experiment were found in SES 3315. Each group was given 4 trays to use for the

14 grams of the Alfalfa Pellet was measured using small trays and placed into a
tray. This was repeated again using the same pellets and another tray. This would
result in two of the four trays containing 14 grams of Alfalfa Pellets. The remaining
two trays had 14 grams of Essentials (guinea pig) pellets placed into each of them.
In all four trays the food was randomly dispersed. After all 4 trays were filled with
the correct amount of food and sand, the trays were carried outside to the field next
to the intersection of Taylor Street and Morgan Street. The two trays with the
condition cover were placed near tall grass in the field. The tall grass represents
cover . Finally, the remaining trays which had the no cover condition were placed
out in the open. The trays were left in their spots for 24 hours. The next day all 4
trays were collected and brought back into room SES 3315 to be measured. A sieve
was used to isolate the food from the
Abraham Lincoln Legacy
Each president of the United States of America has left a legacy, some more notable
than others. I believe Abraham Lincoln was the best American president. A Lot of
people say that anybody can grow up to be a President. But not anybody is cut out to
be a President. It takes a person to be tough, smart, active, positive, compassionate
and driven, to run for the job. It takes talent, character, and integrity, to be able to
withstand the pressures of this Herculean task.
Leadership Skills
Be with a leader when he is right, stay with him when he is still right, but, leave him
when he is wrong. When Abraham Lincoln was president, he was trying to preserve
the union. But, How effective was Lincoln in inspiring his followers to persevere?

Well for the majority of us, it s not. Let s take a look at how president Abraham
Lincoln reacted to this. After having done some research on this aspect, Abraham
Lincoln was confident enough to be humble to not feel the need to bluster or
dominate, but to be sufficiently sure of one s own judgment and self worth to
really listen. A perfect example of trust, loyalty, and respect is revealed in a letter
to Ulysses Grant. Lincoln writes, I now wish to make the personal
acknowledgment that you were right, and I was wrong. How many of us, is brave
enough to write our wrongs? Another example was on February 11, 1861, when
Lincoln departed from Springfield to assume the presidency in March. At a railroad
station he says his emotional farewell: My friends No one, not in my situation, can
appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting. To this place, and the kindness of
these people, I owe everything. These words Abraham shared on such a sad day

Cadia Holdings Pty Ltd v State of New South Wales (2010) 242 CLR 195
Word Count: 1,496
Introduction Factual Background
Cadia Holdings Pty Ltd and Newcrest Operations Ltd (NOL) owned land in New
South Wales, granted to them by the State of New South Walesunder the Mining Act
1992 (NSW). From July 1998 to March 2008, Cadia conducted mining operations
in which it recovered minerals including copper and gold, and paid royalties to the
Minister pursuant to the Mining Act 1992 (NSW). The Minister referred to the Case
of Mines[1], claiming that the mine owned by Cadia was a royal mine containing
gold that belonged to the Crown prerogative, and as a consequence the copper was
also the property of the Crown. Cadia ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That precedent was set back in 1568 when Thomas Percy, the 7th Earl of
Northumberland, was taken to court by Elizabeth, the Queen of England. The
Queen needed gold and silver to prepare for the long expected conflict with Spain.
A jury of Percy s peers found that the gold on his land wasn t really his. In The
Case of Mines[8] , the jury concluded, that by the law of all mines of gold and
silver within the realm, whether they be in the lands of the Queen, or of subjects,
belong to the Queen by prerogative, with liberty to dig and carry away the ores
thereof, and with other such incidents thereto as are necessary to be used for the
getting of the ore. [9] Under pressured circumstances, it proves that whether it s a
monarch, a Parliament, or a Congress, the State is always in pursuit of money with
which to make war. Not much has changed.
The obiter dicta statement made by Kay LJ in the case of Attorney General v
Morgan[10] where the value of gold and copper in a mine were nearly the same
benefit of the doubt should be given to the owner of the mine. [11] If this contention
is persuasive and accepted by the Court, then the outcome of the decision would have
been different. The value of the gold extracted greatly exceeds the value of the
copper despite the fact that the copper has a higher quantity.
However, the Court has correctly applied the legislation, namely section 3 of the
Royal Mines Act 1688 (Imp). Section 3

It started thousands of years ago when the first Egyptian was mummified by the
natural sand found in the Sahara desert. Mummification is a method of preservation
of a dead body. By performing this procedure, it assists the deceased to reach the

The cutting device used for this is Ethiopian Stone. By making this incision, which
is approximately 20cm long the slitter is able to remove the major organs

Next, the body is washed with palm wines and perfumes, including myrrh and
cassia. This process causes the body to smell good and also it also preserved it a
bit longer. Afterwards, the torso is stuffed with linen stuffed with spices in order
to make the body bulk. Next the body is taken to the where they place the body on
another sloping table. The corpse is than covered with a salt called Natron. Natron
is a natural mineral which is found in Egypt. The usage of the Natron is to dry up
the body, and kill most of the bacteria. The table the body lies on is slanted in order
for the liquids to drain down onto a canopic jar. The liquids are would be later
stored in a jar. After around forty to sixty days, depending of the size of the body,
the Natron is removed, and bathed with spices, herbs, and perfumes. After the
eyeballs of the deceased are removed and replaced with glass ones. The torso is also
stuffed with linen, sawdust, ash, or salt. The mouth and nose is either stuffed with
linen, or sealed in beeswax. Once that stage is complete, the finger and toes nails are
threaded with gold wire. Without performing this stage, they
Historical Inaccuracy in Braveheart
The idea that film is a medium in which a director can comment on the ills of society
has been around since the first motion picture was made. The problem with this fact
is that directors and producers often change the historical facts and even the attitudes
of the characters in order stimulate public interest through the striking of some
common chord that the public feels vigorously about. The story of William Wallacein
the movie Braveheartwhile historically fairly accurate in the depictions of the battles
while leaving out many important facts. Randall Wallace added some plot twists to
make the story more appealing to the audience. All the plot twists and inaccuracies
that were added in the movie Braveheart have several basic areas... Show more

In the movie, Wallace is introduced to the audience as a common man with very
humble beginnings whose father was a farmer. He was in fact not the son of a
common farmer but the son of a low level. Wallace first acted in anger against the
English when he was insulted by the son of an English governor and proceeded to
strike him dead and he began his military career. His military dream to free
Scotland started in May 1297 after the murder of Marion Braidfoot who is the
historical basis for the character Murron in Braveheart. Wallace won the battle of
Stirling; he was kind of disappointed when he remembered that he had to fight the
English king. The English king brought his army north. The English army had
infantry and archers as well as over 3000 cavalry. The Scottish army was only half
the size and had almost no cavalry. The Scottish army lost, Wallace however went
into hiding. The film Braveheart makes the audience believe that Wallace went
around killing his enemies in Scotland, there is however no historical evidence for
this belief. Politics were beginning to change due to the manipulations of Edward I
and even England s enemies wouldn t offer Wallace any help. After traveling to
France, germane and Rome he returns to Scotland after almost years abroad to find
out he was betrayed to the English by a Scottish noble named Sir John Menteith and
was turned over to the English for a trial. He was then taken to for trial and
execution. The film Braveheart is
Snapple s Brand Image And Sources Of Brand Equity
1.How would you characterize Snapple s brand image and sources of brand equity?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the brand s existing personality and image?
Snapple was created in 1972 in Brooklyn when Mash, Golden, and Greenberg
decided to start a business. In 1978 they created an apple pop that was making a
snap sound when people were opening it, what inspired the creators to give such
name to their drink. They bought the rights for a name for a high price of $500. By
1991 Snapple became a nationally recognized brand.
Product
Snapple offers more than 50 different tastes of its beverages. The brand offers its
consumers tea, water, juice, and diet products. All products are called 100 % natural
and Snapple s slogan says that it is Made from the Best Stuff on Earth .
Price
Snapple is positioned as a premium brand. The premium product that is available
to anyone . Being so in 1993, the price is still remains a luxury. With the purchase
of Snapple, Cadbury became a leader in non carbonated premium New Age
beverage. (Plus, as was discussed during the lecture, a product can t set the price
smaller than the whole company, so there is no way that Snapple will have not a
premium price being a part of Cadbury).
Place
Originally Snapple was sold through up and down the street channels. It means that
Snapple was available at any place on the street. It was a system of independent
distributors, with whom the brand used to have a strong relationship. This system

Adhd In Children Essay
Good health is one of the most valued things in the life of every human being from
childhood to old age. A nation s future relies on the wellbeing of its children.
Unfortunately, American children are sick and overmedicated. The National Center
of Health Statistics estimated that 7.5 percent of kids at the age interval of six to
seventeen were under medication for emotional or behavioral problems in 2011 2012.
Several millions of children in the United States have been diagnosed with childhood
mental disorder such as eating disorders, depression, autism spectrum disorders,
anxiety disorders, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These kids
are often overmedicated because of incorrect diagnosis of their medical conditions,
improper use of medicines, unnecessary dosage of medications, and conflicts of
interest in the pharmaceutical industry.
Incorrect diagnosis of kids medical conditions can lead to the prescription of wrong
treatments and overmedication. Therefore, it is extremely important that a child is
diagnosed by the correct medical specialist. The diagnosis of mental disorder in kids
is not an exact science. It is so complex that the chance to get the proper medication
that suits the child s condition is extremely slim. Many doctors affirm that psychiatric
prescription is based on their observations of the child s behaviors. Nowadays,
modern psychiatry has reached a point where even the most normal behavior and
emotions of a child have been labeled

The Lady With The Dog Chekhov
A Town of Lust Imagine an adult male or female not in a relationship, looking for a
lustful experience. The resort Yalta in Russia is filled with many men and women
looking for lust. Some men and women such as the ones in the short story, The Lady
with the Dog , written by Anton Chekhov, are willing to commit a sinful act against
their significant other. The main characters, Dmitri Gurov and Anna Sergeyevna,
have an affair in Yalta. Although they partake in this detestable act, they never
inform their spouses about the affair. First off, the story takes place in Yalta, a
Russian resort renowned for its lust and sinful pleasures. The stories of the
immorality in such places as Yalta are to a great extent untrue , ...the tempting
thought of a swift, fleeting love affair, a romance, with an unknown woman, whose
name he did not know, suddenly took possession of him. (Chekhov 166). This
evidence shows that Yalta proves to be a place of lust, changing the way Dimitri
thinks. The Character Anna is married to an important person many people would
not imagine cheating on. A place that can convince a woman to cheat on her husband
is a very influential place. Given the time period the story is published, December

Witchcraft During Medieval Times
During medieval times, there was a constant uproar when it came to difference in
religions, as leaders preferred there be one sacred religion, Christianity. Around the
15th century, leading into the 16th century, in European countries, such as Germany
and surrounding providences, witchcraft became the new practice, which was
frowned upon. Anyone accused of being a witch, could not receive a fair trial, as they
were persecuted, tricked into confession, humiliated, inhumanly tortured, and put to
death by the numbers.
Witchcraft was known, as a practice, in which, one would give themselves, over to the
devil; in return, sorcery would be gained (Witchcraft Documents [15th Century],
1996). Due to fear, and the misunderstandings, of natural disasters, witches were said,
to be the cause of a multitude of events. Uneducated, about the scientific reasoning,
behind; miscarriages, the destruction of crops, any lifeform that had perished, in
addition, to any other mishap; inevitably, witchcraft would be to blame (Witchcraft
Documents [15th Century], 1996). In an attempt, to preserve Catholicism, Pope
Innocent VIII, supported, the persecution of witches.
The excerpt Innocent VIII: BULL Summis desiderantes, Dec. 5th, 1484, is a
memoriam, listing desires and requirements, as to how witches convicted, should be
hunted and put on trial (Witchcraft Documents [15th Century], 1996). To help
preserve and spread Catholicism, would mean to, capture all who have, disrupted

Harrison Bergeron Dystopian
Kurt Vonnegut s dystopian story, Harrison Bergeron , takes place in 2081. It is a
story about everyone being equal, nobody is smarter than anybody else, nobody is
better looking than anybody else, and and nobody is stronger or quicker than
anybody else. This is because everybody wears handicaps to make everyone equal to
each other. But basically, one boy named Harrison Bergerontakes matters into his
own hands and goes against the Society. The Society basically makes all these
people wear their handicaps all the time. One lesson the story suggests is that you
should never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, like Harrison.

She shot them in front of everyone in the room. While this could actually be a
really good point because they did get shot and killed, it fails in one region of
thought to me and probably other people thinking like me also. I think that
Harrison Bergeron and the ballerina s act actually did pay off for them in my line
of thinking. I think that them standing up for what they believe in really did pay
off for them because even though they got shot, I think what really payed off for
them is that they instilled the thought of everyone being equal, and the
government (or Society) holding them to that, is kind of crazy and that the people
of his world should fight for what they believe in. So, Harrison Bergeron and the
ballerina actually stood up for what they believed in and taught people that they
too, should stand up for what they believe in, and that they, and anybody, can
really make a difference with just a couple of opinions and a couple of words
being spoke by the people of the country that you, and others live and dwell in. For
example, in the moment of the story when the ballerina rose, it wasn t because she
wanted to be Harrison Bergeron s wife, it was because she wanted to stand up for
what she believed in with him. The moment in the story is described as, I
The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
When talking about leadership as a whole, a true leader sees his work as a self less
service towards a higher purpose. And to be more specific with a political leader,
being knowledgeable about how to build and use a strong military, how to support
the people, and how to take action immediately when needed. And I remember the
lecture in class where our instructor told us about how leadershipis not power and
power can make someone treat people like items instead of human beings. This
reading was an extraordinary guide to how leaders make decisions maneuver at just
about any capacity in their principality. The Princeby: Niccolo Machiavelli really
tries and is successful at dividing politics and ethics to decipher the characteristics
of a good and bad political/government ruling leader in this novel. In this reading, I
seen 5 points that Machiavelli talked about, and those were: Free Will, Being
Hated vs Goodwill, Virtue, A Good Military, and finally Human Nature. These are
a necessity to the recipe that Machiavelli is making in this book. In the first few
chapters of the book, Machiavelli begins to talk about principalities and the diverse
forms to set the base for the novel. The general definition of a principality is a local
territory that is initially ruled by a prince. And also composite principalities, which
are principalities that are newly created or annexed from another power. And in the
book Machiavelli discusses how some principalities are inherited from previous

township of the same name, but it is politically independent and self sustained.
Frankenmuth is one of the largest tourist attractions in Michigan simply because of
all the things a person can do there. It has shops, historical significance and much
more. The name Frankenmuth is derived from Franken, which refers to the Province
of Franconia and muth refers to courage, which collectively means the courage of the
Franconians. Frankenmuth is also considered a sister city of Gunzenhausen, Bavaria.
Frankenmuth was founded on the basis of Christianity. A German Lutheran
missionary, Frederick Wyneken. He asked other missions from Germany for help.

It is basically the traditional Bavarian cuisine. Most of the famous restaurants there
are family style meals. The most famous of all these restaurants is Zehnder s. It is
the oldest restaurant in Frankenmuth. The hotel was opened in 1929 after William
and Emilie Zehnder were in financial trouble. They had to sell their 80 acre farm
and take a loan to buy the hotel they wanted to buy. Then they redesigned it to look
like George Washington s house. They soon turned into a huge success and now
they even have a waterpark, rooms for staying et cetera. And their most popular
dish was obviously the chicken family dinner. Frankenmuth is also home to one of
the most famous Christmas stores, Bronner s Christmas Wonderland. It was
founded in 1945 and since then has grown into the largest Christmas store in the
world. It covers 27 acres of land and has about everything that is related to
Christmas, but the store only covers 7.35 acres of land. It was designed with
Alpine architecture in mind and two 17 foot Santas and a 15 foot snowman greets
visitors everyday. The store was founded by Wally Bronner. He died in a few years

Kidney Waiting List
The waiting list for a kidney is currently around 93,000 patients. In the time in
which a patient is waiting for a kidney, they often die or become to sick to undergo
surgery. An increase in donors would allow for more people to be saved before it s
too late. A well regulated system would also serve to benefit patients. To increase
donors the government could offer tax breaks for donors. Many organdonations come
from deceased people after accidents. If the government offered minor tax breaks
for people that registered to be a donor there would be a higher number of organ
donors because there is a real incentive. As a result, there would be a higher supply
of organs meaning that there are more to give to patients. This would be a minor price
Disadvantages Of FAPE
Prior to 1975, students with disabilities had limited educational options, as most
children either attended a private school at the expense of their parents or did not
attend a school at all, resulting in the child remaining in the home setting (Lloyd
Llody, 2015). The desire for equal treatment and acceptance are components sought by
students with MSD, their families, and advocates within the field of special education
. Although severe cognitive deficits can impact typical awareness, some individuals
with a severe disability recognize the notion they may be viewed differently from
the general public. FAPE ensures access to learning spaces for children with MSD,
thus a free public education is provided at no cost to the family. In addition, a
continuum of service options is considered by an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
team when determining a public schooldistricts offer of FAPE, which is to be
provided in the least restrictive environment (Yell, Katsiyannis, Ryan, McDuffe
Mattocks, 2008).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An evaluation can identify skill deficits linked to a critical developmental area,
therefore appropriate interventions can be applied if warranted. The utilization of
multiple evaluation instruments is supported through IDEIA, as both strengths and
weaknesses can be depicted. An evaluation must be carried out prior to a child
receiving special education related services. In addition, IDEIA requires the
administration of a multifaceted evaluations with valid assessment instruments, as all
areas of suspected disability must be assessed. Cognitive functioning, developmental
abilities, communication, adaptive skills, and social and emotional levels are several
areas that can be taken into account during the evaluation process (Cambron McCabe,

Jews played a crucial role in their communities in medieval Europe so the growth in
anti sematic action can be seen as unexpected. Whilst Jews had always been
considered as other by their Christian neighbour tolerance existed. So what caused
the shift to viewing Jews as traitors? The causes for anti Semitism during the Latin
Middle Ages were sudden large events, the Crusades and the Black Death, and
ongoing concerns, Jew s economic position. The primary cause was the Crusades as
the First Crusade began a tradition of organised violence against the Jewish
population of Europe, rationalised as an extension of the Christian mission.

Whilst some historians argue that the Crusades did not cause anti Semitism but
rather stimulated it, as examples of persecution of Jews in Europe can be seen
prior to the start of the crusades, such as the killing of more than eighty Jews by
Philip Augustus in 1191 at Bray sur Seine, there had not been a broad Catholic
movement against the Jews since the seventh century. The Crusades saw an
outbreak in violence towards Jews, either by those who felt the fight with non
believers lay at home or on the way to Jerusalem; massacres taking place in 1096 in
the Rhine cities and at other points on the way. Aggressive conversion took place
during the crusades; at Worms 800 Jews died to avoid conversion. The crusades are
the primary cause of anti Semitism during the Latin Middle Ages through the large
scale of persecution they faced, more severe and violent than any other causes.
Furthermore, as the crusades continued and became less successful citizen violence
against Jews increased, such as the
Anger In Speak
Laurie Halse Anderosn has written a book which is considered as a trauma novel
speak . Usually anger is a phase that begins with madness and ends with regret, but
in this book anger will be tackled in different way, Melinda s anger starts with
silence and ends with speaking. In other words it s starts with fear and ends with
triumph over self. Over the course of the novel silence struggling with anger is
leading to speak. Anderson incorporated all themes in anger direction with different
techniques such as flashback, allusion, symbolism, and fragmentation.
The story started in an ambiguous atmosphere ,as readers don t know what happened
to Melinda she refused to speak she only wants to live in her isolation. some people
in their depression tries to speak, and others chooses to keep themselves silent and
get stressed when they are given a heavy workload, like why me ? ,as they are too
weak or shame to face the world around them ,and this exactly what happened to
Melinda in this novel .People experiencing passive anger may not even realize they
are angry, because passive angry maybe repressed, it can be hard to recognize. In
this long term, these suppressed angry feelings can easily be a main reasson for
psychological suffering. As readers can only notice that she carried a folded story
that will be displayed through flashback ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Introduction Transposable elements (TEs) such as Arthrobacter luteus (Alu)
sequences make up approximately 20% of the human DNA genome. The repeated
DNA sequences were once thought to be junk for decades after its discovery in the
1940s, however, recent data suggest that these sequences cause codon alteration and
splice site relocation. Ultimately these events change the human genome. The
transposable elements are believed to have risen from retrotransposition and constant
RNA editing over evolution (Kim 2013). The primary mechanism for
retrotransposition is caused by adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADARs).
ADAR reactivity and potency will enable scientists to track small RNA and gene
interference activities. The retrotransposition of RNA into common introns serve as
indicators of sites of cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic effects. The influx
in the concentration and frequency of production Alu sequences trigger sequence
mutation, generating different protein isomers, leading to cancer (Crews 2015). This
Review analyzes current findings of the application of ADARs and other forms of
RNA editing and their potential to revolutionize biomarker development. The future
of personalized therapeutic drugs and transplant medicine is in the RNA
fingerprinting and the regulation of RNA editing activities. This can be done through
induction of pluripotent stem cells (isPSCs) and other stem cell applications
(Germanguz 2014). Extensive research in ADARs
Bruce Springsteen s Tunnel Of Love
Tunnel of Love is unlike any other album that Bruce Springsteen has written. This
was an album full of love songs, songs about the ups, downs, trust and loyalty that
come with being in a relationship. The Tunnel of love album is drastically different
from the previous Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A.; those two albums both talked
about the struggles and hardships of the working class, a motif that does not appear
in Tunnel of Love. The beat of this album differs greatly from that of Born in the
U.S.A. this album isn t as up beat and fun, instead the album is more down beat and
sounds somewhat sad.
This album as a whole shows us that when someone doesn t understand himself
/herself it can hurt his or her relationship, and lead to unfaithfulness. Springsteen
refers to marriage in the songs Walk like a Man , Cautious Man , and Spare Parts .
Cautious Man is a song about a man who enjoyed his life of solitude and wandering,
and always chose the life he was used to over love until one day when a woman
caught his attention. He fell in love, and married her soon after meeting her. Bruce
Springsteen married American model Julianne Phillips in 1985, after the release of
Tunnel of Love. On the album, many of the songs described his unhappiness in the
relationship with Phillips, and in 1989 (two years after the release of Tunnel of Love)
they got a divorce. Although Bruce Springsteen denies this, many people, including
myself, believe that Cautious Man is an autobiographical

How to Solve the Foreclosure Crisis Essay
Within the past three to four years, the United States has seen the dramatic collapse
of the housing market. The housing bubble spurred by ill advised loans to
individuals who could not afford a mortgage, complicated contracts which had
interest rates and payments changing without reason, and the mass purchasing of bad
loans by lending superpowers, had popped. The rapid increase in the value of homes
across the country for the previous decade, had been a falsity, in which billions of
dollars funded by investments and home purchases were lost within a few months
(Wikipedia.org: United States housing bubble). Millions of home owners were found
to be unable to pay their mortgages, leading to hundreds of thousands of foreclosures.

What is the American Dream? Is it not the ideal held by billions across the globe
that in the United States, the land of opportunity, one can find a well paid job, be
able to raise a family and create a better life for both themselves and their kids
compared to their living situation beforehand? Or is it the ideal, since the United
States is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, anyone no matter what their
situation, through hard work can take their share of that profound wealth? Ever
since the late 1800s, when the United States emerged as one of the world s leading
industrial powers, millions of immigrants have came to this country to make a
better life for themselves. They held on to the idea that in America, they would be
able to afford such amenities such as a television, a car and maybe even a home.
What many did not realize was that it was only through hard strenuous work
would they even be able to survive in America, let alone afford the luxuries of life.
Often many of these immigrants wouldn t live to see the fruits of their labor and
only years down the road were the descendents of the immigrants able to live the

American Dream is not possible for everyone. Even with bank loans and credit, some
in this world cannot afford to live beyond their means. Whether it is buying a certain

Ancient Mesopotamia And Egypt Different
Ancient Mesopotamia Egypt; Different The Same Long before you and I today were
societies in formation. These fascinating societies took place in Mesopotamia and
Egypt in ancient times. Many factors contributed to the similarities and the
differences that occurred between the two; including geography, religion, and social
structures. A glance at the these factors will give us a better understanding of a
couple of the first societies or civilizations that occurred before people today.
In order to understand a society, with the religion that it follows and the social
structures that are set, we need to understand the place that it lies, which is their
geographical influences. The geographical influences hold a tremendous impact on
the people that it consumes. Evidence has shown that the physical and emotional
attributes imposed upon a person are dictated by the geography that surrounds them.
Adaptations are made to survive within the standards set by the geography of a
certain place. In example, a person living in a climate with a significant amount of
sunlight, compared to a person living under little sunlight, will have darker skin to
prevent harm from the rays of the sun. Both Mesopotamia and Egypt were dependent
upon a source of water; the Nile for Egypt and the Tigris and Euphrates for
Mesopotamia. The difference between the two lands is that Egypt took place on
either side of the Nile, whereas Mesopotamia was a valley laid between the Tigris
and Euphrates. Sitting on
The Clash Of Zionism And Arab Nationalism Essay
Introduction to Middle East Politics
Midterm Essay
Minahil Tauseef
Clash of Nationalisms
The clash of Zionism and Arab nationalism has led to the longest running conflict in
the history of the world that shapes the politics of the Middle East to this day. The
roots of the modern Arab Israeli conflict can be found in the rise of Zionism and Arab
nationalism towards the end of the 19th century. The source of the conflict is
territorial claims over a small piece of land that is the historical homeland for two
different nationalities. Palestine has historically held great significance for the Jews.
Zionism transformed that religious attachment and made it into a basis for a claim
onnational grounds that this is their national home. This set them in potential conflict
with another nationality, the Arabs, who seePalestine as historically and currently
belonging to the Arabs, and in the Pan Islamic context, as Muslim lands. Over the
course of this paper, I will talk about why the Arab Israeli conflict was inevitable and
why these two ideologies were fated to clash.
In order to understand the clash, we must first understand the importance of the
region that has been the focus of two conflicting territorial claims. The Jewish claim
to the state of Israel is rooted in the nearly six thousand year old belief of Jews that
Israel is the homeland promised to them by God in the Torah. Jewish history has
been a continuous cycle of exile and return to the promised land . The desire to

Robert Ferris Thompson also uses figure 1, Mbumba Mbondo to further elaborate
the content and significance that this artifact represented. For instance, in
accordance to this artifact the Kongo viewed this object as a sacred and powerful
charm. In Thompson s article the term s etymology of mbumba is another term for
Nkisi, however, mbumba is of higher class, referring to a higher connection to the
dead of Kongo. It also explains that the word mbumba is a reference to a jar or
basket. This jar as analyzed was decorated with materials as mentioned before and
had also great significance such as white buttons symbolizing mystery and the bird
feathers symbolizing power that flies that was meant and believed to be the
connection to heaven. Furthermore, Figure 2 a more recent Nkisi is more vibrant
and luminous or as referred to the illumination to call upon the Iwa. Now,
according to Stephen D. Glazier s article, the term Iwa or Ioa served in reference to
spirits or deities, and this comes way back from African origins. To explain, in
Africa the Kongo community would have the priest sanctify the Iwa to allow
practice of devotion as a fellowship. However, in Haiti the relationship

Ruskin Bond, rightly observed as Wordsworth of India, has made eminent
contribution to Indian writing in English. His works, sophisticated yet simple, convey
a large and complex meaning inherent in Indian life and culture. Prominently
recognized for his treatment of nature, children and childhood in his notable works,
Bond also established himself as an illustrious promoter of feminism. Under the wrap
of dark comedy, he gracefully touches on the subject of sexual despotism and
repression meted out towards women. In Susanna s Seven Husbands, he ruthlessly
brings out the subjugation that a womanfaces in a prejudiced society by subverting the
established norms of system and institution regarding the general perception of
women s place in society.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Rhetorical Devices In The Joy Luck Club
In the novel, The Joy Luck Club, the author, Amy Tan, employs various rhetorical
devices at numerous points in the story to achieve a specific purpose, whether the
aim is to expand a character s development, to further the evolution of the plot, or
to suggest a certain theme to the reader. In particular, one of the most common
rhetorical devices exploited by Tan throughout the story is perhaps the anecdote,
which forces the reader to analyze the hidden significance of it as its contents are
much longer and more elaborate than other rhetorical devices which typically
consist of a mere sentence or two. Each anecdote in the book carries substantial
importance and yet, it seems that the fact that there are so many of them in the
novel does not undermine each one s individual magnificence. The most poignant
anecdote in the book may in fact be the story of An Mei s mother of how she lost
herself and became a concubine against her will to a notorious mogul named Wu
Tsing. An Mei s mother ultimately chooses to commit suicide in hopes that it will
save her two children from the neglect and wrath of her husband, who initially
cares very little about An Mei and her family but is convinced by Chinese myth to
improve their standards of living, Seeing her this last time, I threw myself on her
body. And she opened her eyes slowly... I shut her eyes with my fingers and told
her with my heart: I can see the truth too... Because we both knew this: that on the
third day after someone dies, the soul comes back to settle scores... He (Wu Tsing)
promised her visiting ghost that he would raise Lakkis 2 Sauydi and me as his
honored children, (Tan 240). After reading this excerpt, the reader is forced to
question why An Mei decided to tell this story to her daughter considering how dark
and disturbing it is. The reader typically comes to the conclusion that the author is
indirectly attempting to instill a theme into the reader s mind; one that could be
interpreted as stemming from the controversial subject of sacrifice. In this anecdote,
An Mei s mother, after enduring physical and emotional

placed first in the mathematical examination in his second year, for him it was an
unprecedented achievement. According to NY Times, In 1905 he took his bachelor
s degree from Cambridge University; in 1907 he became Smith s Prize winner and
was elected a fellow of Trinity College; and in 1909 he obtained his master s degree.
Aside from being an astronomer, he was also a physicist, and a mathematician.

Where he began his first theoretical investigations, which would later become one of
Eddington s famous discovery. Eddington did a little observations during a solar
eclipse on an African island call PrГncipe, in 1919. Eddington confirmed Einstein s
predictions of a slight shift in starlight caused by the gravitational field of the Sun.
It was verification of the bending of light passing close to the Sun. Which was

You don t need a bunch of fancy equipment to go camping, although it doesn t hurt
to bring it if you have it! There are a few things, however, that you might miss on
your camping trip, if you forget them at home. Water I ve seen a lot of people
remember the soda, alcohol and beer, but forget to bring water. While there is
nothing wrong with the other beverages, they won t keep you hydrated. Drinkable
water is a must, especially in hot summer months. And keep in mind that you will
want water for washing hands and dishes, too. Make sure you bring enough for all!
Insect Repellant The best camping trip can quickly turn sour when the mosquitoes
come out. What type of insect repellant you buy is up to your discretion, but when
camping, I personally prefer to bring something that is sweat resistant, and
designed for deep woods situations. Sunscreen Unlike a day at the beach, where
sunscreen is usually the first thing we pack, people sometimes forget to grab the
sunscreen when heading out to the woods. However, the sun still shines at the
campground, if you re lucky, and if you plan to be out on the water at all, you re
going to want that sunscreen. Baby Wipes Some camp sites have running water
available, or perhaps you re camping in an RV with hookups for water. But either
way, baby wipes offer a quick easy way to clean up. They are great for washing
hands and faces, and small messes. Entertainment
Cinchona Bark Controversy
You bring up some really good points that I had not considered. I must say that I
agree with you standpoint on synthesizing of the drug being an advancement and not
being an act of biopiracy. I think I was more look at it in its indirect nature how it
was affecting the South American countries that were robbed from the economic
benefits of the use of the natural bark for the production of quinine.
I think that in part we are guilty by association since we were part of group that
imposed the negative impact upon the indigenous rights of this plant s native host
country. I think that in too many instances people turn a blind eye to wrong doings
just because it is benefiting them. Instead of standing up for another s rights,

Its primary use was for its antimalarial benefits, which throughout the 1600s to 1800s
was the primary treatment for malaria. It is also used to kill parasites, reduce fever,
regulate the heartbeat, stimulate digestions, antibacterials, antifungals, reduce muscle
spasms, relieve pain, and calm nerves.
In 1820, the scientists Pelletier and Caventou were able to isolate the quinine
alkaloid from the bark of the tree to be sold as the antimalarial drug. Not until 1944,
during World War II, was the alkaloid synthesized by scientists for its medicinal
reproduction. This was due to the fact that at the time the top producer of quinine, the
dutch owned Indonesian island of Java, was occupied by the Japanese in 1942. This
cut off allied forces from the drug supply, forcing them to find alternatives to mass
produce the antimalarial drugs.
Quinine alkaloid was used briefly to treat heart problems and cardiac arrhythmia
and became a standard for cardiac therapy. This lead to the discovery of a second
alkaloid called quinidine that is found in the tree bark. This is primarily used in
prescriptions to treat arrhythmia. However, this alkaloid has not yet been able to be
synthesized by scientists, requiring the natural bark of the tree for its

Essay About Character

  • 1. Essay About Character Crafting an essay on the concept of "Essay About Character" presents a unique challenge, primarily because the topic itself is broad and multifaceted. Character, in its essence, encompasses a vast array of qualities, traits, and behaviors that define an individual's moral and ethical makeup. Attempting to encapsulate such a complex notion within the confines of an essay demands careful consideration and thoughtful analysis. Firstly, delving into the exploration of character necessitates a thorough understanding of various philosophical, psychological, and sociological perspectives. One must navigate through a plethora of theories and frameworks proposed by eminent scholars and thinkers, ranging from Aristotle's concept of virtue ethics to modern psychological theories on personality development. This requires extensive research and critical thinking to synthesize divergent viewpoints into a cohesive argument. Furthermore, the task of elucidating the significance of character in different contexts adds another layer of complexity. Whether discussing the role of character in literature, examining its relevance in leadership and decision-making, or evaluating its impact on societal norms and values, each angle demands nuanced analysis and compelling evidence. Moreover, the subjective nature of character complicates the writing process further. What one person perceives as admirable traits may differ significantly from another's perspective, influenced by cultural, religious, and personal beliefs. Balancing objectivity with subjectivity while elucidating the essence of character requires finesse and diplomacy in articulation. Additionally, crafting an engaging and insightful essay on character necessitates more than just theoretical analysis. Incorporating real-life examples, anecdotes, and case studies adds depth and authenticity to the discussion, illustrating how character manifests in everyday situations and influences individual choices and actions. In conclusion, writing an essay on the topic of "Essay About Character" is undeniably challenging, demanding a comprehensive understanding of diverse theoretical frameworks, adept critical thinking skills, and the ability to navigate the complexities of subjective interpretation. However, despite its intricacies, delving into the exploration of character is both intellectually stimulating and profoundly rewarding, offering valuable insights into the human condition and the principles that govern moral and ethical conduct. • 4. Al-Qaeda s Air Travel While terrorism has affected airline travel for decades, the Al Qaeda perpetrated attacks of September 11, 2011, resulted in the most significant modifications to U.S. air travel policy. Prior to the 9/11 attacks, hijackings like the Dawson s Field incident drove international changes to passenger security screening protocols (Clark, 2016). Even still, incidents like 1988 s downing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, occurred before electronic baggage scanning became standard (Donavan, Delawala, and Santichen, 2009). Despite these tragic events, Al Qaeda and its affiliates actions, both those successful and failed, drove the U.S. s changes to law and policy for air travel. Al Qaeda s immediate, and possibly most overarching, impact
  • 5. The Second Criterion Is Quality The second criterion is quality. How has the ACA affected the ability of patients to obtain quality care? According to the White House, quality of care has improved in a couple of important ways (Somanader, 2015). First, they argue patients are healthier when they leave a hospital stay, describing how from 2010 to 2013, 50,000 fewer people have died as the result of hospital errors and infections. They also explain that new care models allow patients to access their doctor when they need to. However, the White House also acknowledges that more work needs to be done (Somander, 2015). One significant way the ability to obtain quality care has been impacted is through the removal of pre existing condition exclusions. Patients with coverage... Finally, the impact of the ACA on the cost of the health care system will be evaluated. Overall, health care spending in the U.S. has continued to grow but at a much slower rate. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported that health care spending grew at the lowest rate ever recorded (Hartman, Martin, Lassman, Catlin, 2014). This was in part due to the ACA. Other factors included slow economic growth and increases in private health insurance spending. Additionally, a greater number of high deductible insurance plans and an increase in the share of health costs for which the patient is responsible have also increased. It is also possible that people not accessing health care is a factor, in addition to cost controls (Fernandez as cited in Ungar O Donnell, 2014). There is also the possibility that spending will grow faster as the economy continues to improve (Ungar O Donnell, 2014). The growth of health spending has slowed, however the impact of the ACA on this is unclear. Introduction Transposable elements (TEs) such as Arthrobacter luteus (Alu) sequences make up approximately 20% of the human DNA genome. The repeated DNA sequences were once thought to be junk for decades after its discovery in the 1940s, however, recent data suggest that these sequences cause codon alteration and splice site relocation. Ultimately these events change the human genome. The transposable elements are believed to have risen from retrotransposition and constant RNA editing over evolution (Kim 2013). The primary mechanism for retrotransposition is caused by adenosine deaminases acting on RNA (ADARs). ADAR reactivity and potency will enable scientists to track small RNA and gene interference activities. The retrotransposition of RNA into common introns serve as indicators of sites of cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic effects. The influx in the concentration and frequency of production Alu sequences trigger sequence mutation, generating different protein isomers, leading to cancer (Crews 2015). This Review analyzes current findings of the application of ADARs and other forms of RNA editing and their potential to revolutionize biomarker development. The future of personalized therapeutic drugs and transplant medicine is in the RNA fingerprinting and the regulation of RNA editing activities. Cautious Man is a song about a man who enjoyed his life of solitude and wandering, and always chose the life he was used to over love until one day when a woman caught his attention. He fell in love, and married her soon after meeting her. Bruce Springsteen married American model Julianne Phillips in 1985, after the release of Tunnel of Love. On the album, many of the songs described his unhappiness in the relationship with Phillips, and in 1989 (two years after the release of Tunnel of Love) they got a divorce. Although Bruce Springsteen denies this, many people, including myself, believe that Cautious Man is an autobiographical

The housing bubble spurred by ill advised loans to individuals who could not afford a mortgage, complicated contracts which had interest rates and payments changing without reason, and the mass purchasing of bad loans by lending superpowers, had popped. The rapid increase in the value of homes across the country for the previous decade, had been a falsity, in which billions of dollars funded by investments and home purchases were lost within a few months (Wikipedia.org: United States housing bubble). Is it not the ideal held by billions across the globe that in the United States, the land of opportunity, one can find a well paid job, be able to raise a family and create a better life for both themselves and their kids compared to their living situation beforehand? Or is it the ideal, since the United States is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, anyone no matter what their situation, through hard work can take their share of that profound wealth? Ever since the late 1800s, when the United States emerged as one of the world s leading industrial powers, millions of immigrants have came to this country to make a better life for themselves. They held on to the idea that in America, they would be able to afford such amenities such as a television, a car and maybe even a home. What many did not realize was that it was only through hard strenuous work would they even be able to survive in America, let alone afford the luxuries of life. Often many of these immigrants wouldn t live to see the fruits of their labor and only years down the road were the descendents of the immigrants able to live the lives their forbearers initially wanted to live themselves. The truth of matter is the American Dream is not possible for everyone. Even with bank loans and credit, some in this world cannot afford to live beyond their means. These fascinating societies took place in Mesopotamia and Egypt in ancient times. Many factors contributed to the similarities and the differences that occurred between the two; including geography, religion, and social structures. A glance at the these factors will give us a better understanding of a couple of the first societies or civilizations that occurred before people today. In order to understand a society, with the religion that it follows and the social structures that are set, we need to understand the place that it lies, which is their geographical influences. The geographical influences hold a tremendous impact on the people that it consumes. Evidence has shown that the physical and emotional attributes imposed upon a person are dictated by the geography that surrounds them. Adaptations are made to survive within the standards set by the geography of a certain place. In example, a person living in a climate with a significant amount of sunlight, compared to a person living under little sunlight, will have darker skin to prevent harm from the rays of the sun. Both Mesopotamia and Egypt were dependent upon a source of water; the Nile for Egypt and the Tigris and Euphrates for Mesopotamia. The difference between the two lands is that Egypt took place on either side of the Nile, whereas Mesopotamia was a valley laid between the Tigris and Euphrates. Sitting on
  • 33. The Clash Of Zionism And Arab Nationalism Essay Introduction to Middle East Politics Midterm Essay Minahil Tauseef Clash of Nationalisms The clash of Zionism and Arab nationalism has led to the longest running conflict in the history of the world that shapes the politics of the Middle East to this day. The roots of the modern Arab Israeli conflict can be found in the rise of Zionism and Arab nationalism towards the end of the 19th century. The source of the conflict is territorial claims over a small piece of land that is the historical homeland for two different nationalities. Palestine has historically held great significance for the Jews. Zionism transformed that religious attachment and made it into a basis for a claim onnational grounds that this is their national home. This set them in potential conflict with another nationality, the Arabs, who seePalestine as historically and currently belonging to the Arabs, and in the Pan Islamic context, as Muslim lands. Over the course of this paper, I will talk about why the Arab Israeli conflict was inevitable and why these two ideologies were fated to clash. In order to understand the clash, we must first understand the importance of the region that has been the focus of two conflicting territorial claims. The Jewish claim to the state of Israel is rooted in the nearly six thousand year old belief of Jews that Israel is the homeland promised to them by God in the Torah. Jewish history has been a continuous cycle of exile and return to the promised land . The desire to

  • 41. Rhetorical Devices In The Joy Luck Club In the novel, The Joy Luck Club, the author, Amy Tan, employs various rhetorical devices at numerous points in the story to achieve a specific purpose, whether the aim is to expand a character s development, to further the evolution of the plot, or to suggest a certain theme to the reader. In particular, one of the most common rhetorical devices exploited by Tan throughout the story is perhaps the anecdote, which forces the reader to analyze the hidden significance of it as its contents are much longer and more elaborate than other rhetorical devices which typically consist of a mere sentence or two. Each anecdote in the book carries substantial importance and yet, it seems that the fact that there are so many of them in the novel does not undermine each one s individual magnificence. The most poignant anecdote in the book may in fact be the story of An Mei s mother of how she lost herself and became a concubine against her will to a notorious mogul named Wu Tsing. An Mei s mother ultimately chooses to commit suicide in hopes that it will save her two children from the neglect and wrath of her husband, who initially cares very little about An Mei and her family but is convinced by Chinese myth to improve their standards of living, Seeing her this last time, I threw myself on her body. And she opened her eyes slowly... I shut her eyes with my fingers and told her with my heart: I can see the truth too... Because we both knew this: that on the third day after someone dies, the soul comes back to settle scores... He (Wu Tsing) promised her visiting ghost that he would raise Lakkis 2 Sauydi and me as his honored children, (Tan 240). After reading this excerpt, the reader is forced to question why An Mei decided to tell this story to her daughter considering how dark and disturbing it is. The reader typically comes to the conclusion that the author is indirectly attempting to instill a theme into the reader s mind; one that could be interpreted as stemming from the controversial subject of sacrifice. In this anecdote, An Mei s mother, after enduring physical and emotional

It is also used to kill parasites, reduce fever, regulate the heartbeat, stimulate digestions, antibacterials, antifungals, reduce muscle spasms, relieve pain, and calm nerves. In 1820, the scientists Pelletier and Caventou were able to isolate the quinine alkaloid from the bark of the tree to be sold as the antimalarial drug. Not until 1944, during World War II, was the alkaloid synthesized by scientists for its medicinal reproduction. This was due to the fact that at the time the top producer of quinine, the dutch owned Indonesian island of Java, was occupied by the Japanese in 1942. This cut off allied forces from the drug supply, forcing them to find alternatives to mass produce the antimalarial drugs. Quinine alkaloid was used briefly to treat heart problems and cardiac arrhythmia and became a standard for cardiac therapy. This lead to the discovery of a second alkaloid called quinidine that is found in the tree bark. This is primarily used in prescriptions to treat arrhythmia. However, this alkaloid has not yet been able to be synthesized by scientists, requiring the natural bark of the tree for its
