2. COOPERATIVE
LEARNING
• “Cooperative learning is a set of teaching strategies
used to help learners meet specific learning and
interpersonal goals in structured groups. ”
- Slavin
(1995)
• It is developed as an alternative to both whole class
teaching and individual teaching.
• Helps to achieve two goals
1. Learning
3. • Set of teaching strategies.
• It takes place in structured groups.
COOPERATIVE LEARNING
PRINCIPLES
• Positive interdependence
They share a common goal .
“Sink or swim together ”
Groupmates have a common identity (group name,
motto)
Thinking should be made audible within a group
4. GROUPING
Grouping shouldbe heterogeneous as in it :-
1. Student see more perspectives
2. More peer tutoring
3. Increase in confidence
Usually teacher decides which students should work
together.
Individual accountability
• No social loafing or free riding
• Calling students at random to share their groups’
ideas
5. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE
• Only 1 or 2 group members should not dominate.
(If a student is not participating there are good chance
that he is not thinking)
COOPERATIVE SKILL
• Skills needed to work effectively with others
1. Checking that others understand
2. Asking for and giving reasons
3. Disagreeing politely
4. Responding politely
5. Encouraging others to participate
6. GROUP AUTONOMY
• Students should look to themselves for help instead of
relying on the teacher.
• Teacher should not fall for temptation.
A few cooperative teaching strategies which me use :-
• Group Investigation
• Student Teacher Achievement Division
• Jigsaw
7. JIGSAW
• Divide class into groups(let us take 4 groups for
example) and name members as A,B,C,D,E.
• Divide the topic to be studied in 5 parts and then
assign one part to one member of the group.
• A of every group will get the same part of topic vice
versa for B, C, D, E.
• A of all groups will meet to exchange their
knowledge,same goes for others.
8. • A return to their original group and teach
components of their specialization to group
members.
* Thus every student is taught as well as gets an
opportunity to teach.
ADVANTAGES of cooperative teaching
• Makes students active learners
• Better academic development as compared to
traditional teaching
9. • Students who are reluctant to give answer in
whole class feel more comfortable in small group
thus it helpsin raising their self esteem and
confidence.
• Improvement in communication skills
• Attitudinal change among students .
SUGGESTIONS
• In mixed ability groups stronger students do moat
of the work and it creates a burden, teacher shoul
ensure proper division of groups and individual
accountability
• Never for permanent groups in class as it creates
10. • Noise level should be kept minimum
• Groups should function in democratic manner.
• Don’t always let the top student in the group
answer,call students at random.
