Amory Lovins’ Logic in Natural Capitalism Essay
Amory Lovins Logic in Natural Capitalism
In the first chapter of Natural Capitalism, author Amory Lovins proposes a new method of capitalism
that recognizes the importance of natural and human capital in the industrial system. Conventional
capitalism places value only on capital that yields financial gain, and ignores the human and natural
parts of the equation. Lovins points to this as the reason for many of the environmental, social, and
economic problems on our planet today. He argues that the destructive practices of conventional
capitalism must cease, and that a new industrial revolution must happen that will change how human
beings support themselves and sustain the resources of the planet. In this chapter he ... Show more

Lovins contrast of sustainable methods versus destructive methods convinces the readers to agree with
his claim and follow his proposed changes.
He discusses four key strategies for implementing natural capitalism; radical resource productivity,
biomimicry, service and flow economy, and investing in natural capital. Radical resource productivity
involves finding every way possible to increase the usage that humans get from natural resources. This
lowers the cost of materials and decreases the amount of pollution due to wasteful consumption of
resources. Biomimicry is the term given for modeling the mechanical processes of our industries after
the self sustaining and interdependent processes found in nature. Such a transformation would make
factories more efficient and less polluting. Creating a service and flow economy means that consumers
would pay for the service a product provides instead of buying the product itself. Instead of throwing
away worn out products, consumers can just return them to the manufacturer, who will repair them or
recycle them. Investing in natural capital means that corporations value living systems. In this sort of
system, logging companies would value not only the lumber that they harvest, but the forest habitat
where the trees came from as well. This gives companies motivation to not strip a forest bare because
they now profit from a thriving forest habitat. This Lovins calls these points the basis of

Susan Atkins Research Paper
Susan Atkins was born on May 7, 1948 in California. She had a really difficult childhood. She has two
brothers, one older and one younger. She was very self conscious and quiet. She always felt unloved
by her parents because they favored her brothers more. Allegedly, Susan was molested by her older
brother, his friends, her father s friends, and friends of the family. She grew up in a middle class
neighborhood. She was in her school s glee club and church choir. Growing up, both of her parents
were alcoholics. Her mother died from cancer when she was fourteen. She and her brothers were cared
for by her grandparents. Her relationship with her father started falling apart as a result from his
drinking habits. They worsened after his wife passed away.
Susan had to take on a job and her younger brother because her father left them. She could not focus
on school so she dropped out and took on a full time job. She was forced to move out of her
grandparents because there was not enough room. Her younger brother stayed while she had to
support herself. Her older brother joined the navy. During this time, she learned that stealing gave her
excitement. She moved to San Francisco when she was eighteen. It was very hard for her to hold
down a stable job. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Susan did not start committing serious crimes until she met the two escaped convicts. Together they
started committing armed robberies. She did have a very rough childhood, but everything changed
after that point. She continued to get worse and worse. She started selling drugs, which she tried only
when she was around people. This caused her to try many different hard drugs. She then met Manson,
which caused her life to downward spiral. She was constantly influenced by him. She thought he
really cared about her so she complied with anything he wanted, even if she did not do want to do it.
Manson had convinced her that all of the bad they were doing was actually

Speech Is Power Of Speech Changed The Course Of History Essay
Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed the importance of speech in one short sentence: Speech is power:
speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. In 2008, the power of speech changed the course of
history; the first African American president was elected, transcending years of racial inequality. For
many blacks in the U.S., and many around the world, Barack Obama s presidency was a step closer to
righting America s 400 year old wrong: slavery and subsequent discrimination toward the black race.
Obama s victory was traced back to his powerful speech and his natural ability to charismatically
orate. In the end, however, it was Obama s political philosophy that persuaded individuals to support
him. Following his victory in 2008, President Barack Obama used rhetoric to advocate for change,
hope, and a united America where the window of opportunity could remain open for all. The son of a
white American mother and a black Kenyan father, Barack Hussein Obama II spent most of his life
feeling excluded in the racially homogenous state of Hawaii. Despite his childhood hardships, Obama
graduated from Columbia University with a political science major in 1983. Later, he entered Harvard
Law School where he became the first black president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review in 1990
(Nelson). Although a great majority of the journal s staff was conservative, Obama won as a liberal by
promising that he would treat all political beliefs equally and fairly a promise he was famously known

Sympatric Speciation Research Paper
In order to solve that question, let s follow me and Time travel to 55 millions years ago! There was an
animal the size of a small dog called Hyracotherium.Everyone would like it to be a pet. It s the oldest
found horse ancestor, They were scampering through the forests full of plants rich in foliage that
covered North America. For more than their history they lived in there, and horses remained small,
forest browsers. Their toes, four at the front and three at the back, sprawled out at different angles
which helped them from sinking in the marshy ground.
Until one day the changing climate Conditions allowed grasslands to expand, foliage plants
disappeared. And about 20 million years ago, many new species rapidly evolved. Some but not all of
the hyracotherium become bigger and stronger. And only those who become bigger and stronger can

TITLE
Visit One Of Thailand s Remotest Areas And Stay In Umphang House
LEAD PARAGRAPH
Umphang is a remote village and district in the Thai province of Tak. Close to the border with Burma /
Myanmar and almost entirely enveloped by dense jungles and national parks, Umphang is one of the
county s most inaccessible areas. With just one twisting and winding mountainous road into the area,
you may wonder why people bother! Umphang is, however, well worth a visit. Home to Thailand s
biggest waterfall, visitors can also enjoy amazing views and an array of excellent outdoor activities.
The town has just a few places to stay, and Umphang House is a great choice. The basic but clean
rooms offer a good base from which to enjoy the area, and you can easily arrange an assortment of
trips and activities with the guest house. Members of staff can speak good English, and are an
excellent source of information about the area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rooms are quite old, but decently clean, and each room has a private bathroom with hot water.
Rooms are cooled by electric fans; there is no air conditioning.
The concrete rooms may look somewhat like a jail cell, and there may be few furnishings, but given
that most people spend the best part of their days out and about exploring, it is likely that your room
will simply be a place to store your belongings and rest your head at night time.
Rooms have a double bed, a desk with a TV, and a low table for storing your luggage.
Rooms for two people cost just 400 THB (approximately 11 USD) per night.

Ocean Tide Research Papers
Amari Williams
Research Paper RD Beginning with its creation, Earth has been in contact with many natural,
environmental disasters. Majorities of the chaos still have effects on people living in coastal areas.
Because of the Earth s large capacity of water and relationship with gravity, tidal waves through
extreme tidal storms are created. The Moon heavily influences the movement of Earth s tides by
shifting and relating land features, using its gravitational pull to change the height of the tides, and
also affecting the speed of the Moon s revolution. To start, the Earth s aquatic tides are the constant
rise and fall of bodies of water every day (Jacobs 9). Gravity, provided by the Moon and some parts of
the Sun, helps create the ocean s tides (Jacobs 10). It is also often caused by the winds forcefully ...

Land tides are pieces of ground or land that are slowly shifted up and down twice by the gravitational
force between the Sun and Moon ( The ). Because of important use of mainly sunlight, land tides
occur most near the Equator and not often in the poles. These tides happen in four cycles: the lunar
diurnal, lunar semidiurnal, solar diurnal, and solar semidiurnal ( Tides ). Diurnal tides last 24 hours
while semidiurnal tides only last 12 hours. During a land tide, the center of the Earth to the outer crust
takes time to deform under the Moon and Sun ( The ). The deformation takes toll on geological
processes and volcanic eruptions ( Tides ). To include, scientists found that volcanic eruptions and
tides have a relationship because of the magma flowing in volcanoes. Geologists use specific
instruments like: seismometers, tiltmeters, and strainmeters to measure slow shifts. Results from these
tools are placed on a graph to view the various movements of Earth. In 1978, Spahr Webb, former
M.I.T student, measured with two thirty six feet tiltmeters and found a tidal tilt in Earth s surface that

Here, Minerva loses some credibility as a strong and powerful character. I do see her as strong willed,
but one has no strength, power, or control behind bars and this shows her as being weakened as a
character.
Once out of jail, Minerva looses her drive and enjoys just staying at home with her mom. I couldn t
stand the idea of being locked up in any one life. So when we were released in August and put under
house arrest, you d have thought I was getting just the punishment for me. But to tell the truth, it was
as if I d been served my sentence on a silver platter (Alvarez 257). Here, you see there is nothing else
that she would rather do than to sit at home and be with her mother. Although this is cute that she
wants to be with her mom, it shows how jail got the best of her. It proves my theory that she is not as
strong as she thought she was, and it took only one obstacle in her life to break her down. Here, in this
part of the book, she has even lost her driving soul that she used to have. Being put under house arrest,
one would have expected Minerva to find a way to break free from this and continue to fight for her
freedom. Instead, she is content and has been transformed from a courageous individual to a scared
and timid character. This just proves how Minerva can be broken down and is not a strong individual.

School Shooting In The United States
Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, approximately every week, a mass
shooting occurs. The number of school shootings is growing and we are not on the brink of finding a
solution. Most school shooting are in the United States rather than overseas. The number of school
shootings in the United States is increasing due to the lack of mental health care, excessive violent
video games, and the accessibility of guns. Often we link school shootings to people who are recluse
and spend hours playing violent video games. Most violent video games promote killing, by giving
rewards. Evidence supports that this is true, but video games are not the only cause of crazy, illogical
shooters walking into an unprotected school setting to kill students and staff. After the intensive
investigation of many of the recent school shootings,14 were linked to violent video games including
a local one at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The more violence that our brain
becomes accustomed to, the more we think it is acceptable to shoot and kill people. These video
games lead to a more dangerous world for all of us. Mental health care in the United States is a
growing problem and continues to be one. Not only is it very expensive, but many health care

Infanticide Is The Killing Of An Infant
This paper discusses whether it is ever permissible to commit infanticide or not. Infanticide is the
killing of an infant or the practice of killing newborn infants. It is a difficult subject to discuss since
infanticide seems morally repugnant at first glimpse, though it becomes increasingly complicated as
we reflect on particular nuances in real world cases.
ROADMAP:
I argue that it is impermissible to commit infanticide under any circumstance since committing murder
of a person under any circumstance is wrong. Infanticide in simple words is the murder of a newborn
infant. There is no difference between killing a newborn and a fully grown adult. Both of them can be
defined as persons since they both possess a human essence that makes ... Show more content on

Hence, fully grown adults differ from infants due to the fact that they value life and have the capacity
to retain their memories and personal identity. They can engage in rational thought and appreciate
their existence. Infants aren t even capable of grasping their existence, leave alone any memories.
Hence, they shouldn t even be considered to be persons.
However, this objection isn t valid since eventually even infants will develop the capability to think,
retain memories and value life since abilities are developmental in nature. Also, if rationality and self
awareness define personhood and determine the moral significance of persons, then there are many
fully grown adults who can be disqualified as persons, for example an adult under coma. According to
this argument, since comatose patients are unconscious and can t rationally think at the time, killing
them would be permissible too.
ARGUMENT
I argue that infanticide is impermissible under any circumstance. I will support my stance by arguing
against Peter Singer s argument that supports the infanticide of disabled infants. In Taking Life:
Humans, Singer states that if we can morally kill a disabled fetus that has no self consciousness, it
follows that we can morally kill a disabled infant that has no self consciousness. Take note that Singer
argues in favor of committing infanticide of only disabled infants if it serves the interests of the
parents. He does not argue that it is right to

Civil Service Benefits
Requiring all high school students to spend one year in service after high school is an amazing idea. A
civil service is a great way to teach young adults responsibility and rigor. Civil service teaches
students great responsibilities like tending to wounds and learning how to care for yourself, as well as
others. young adults often have jobs other than just to protect our country in the civil service, they
often clean, serve food, and much more. These jobs are put in place to teach these new soldiers rigor
in their daily tasks that can be put in place for future jobs, therefore congress should definitely pass
this law. In addition to giving some students an idea of what they would like to do for the rest of their
lives, civil service opens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often learning trial and error, most young adults haven t learned how to take care of themselves. Not
to mention the fact that being in the civil service is highly dangerous. Some families would be very
upset if their child died in the service because they were forced to go there. The population would
significantly decrease if this law was issued because millions of heroes die every year being in the
civil service, and as of now only males are on a list to go. Some student just aren t in good enough
physical shape to join the civil service and may require more effort/time to be in peak physical shape
instructors would like. This would waste valuable time in training than just letting those students go
off to college. Because some students would like to be in fields requiring many years of school and
don t have time to serve in the civil service, only certain young adults should be required to the civil
service for a year. So all together, I think Congress should pass this law, but put stricter limitations on
who has to go into the civil service for a year because students haven t learned valuable life skills and
some have important careers to attend

Current State Of Fuel And World Energy Demand
Current State of fuel World Energy Demand
Post 18th Century Industrial revolution has created a dependency on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and
natural gas for all technological and transportation demands that engineer modern society. However.
Such demands, and even their expected future demands threatens the overall worlds energy supply and
generates large strains on the environment. The Hydrogen economy article published by Physics
Today in December 2004 anticipated that the world energy demand will double by 2050 in response to
population growth and industrialisation of developing countries. (Crabtree, Dresselhaus and
Buchanan, 2004).
An article by Todd Woody of The Atlantic (Woody, 2013) has stated that developing countries will
account for 65% of the world s energy consumption by 2040. The majority of such consumption being
produced by non OCED nations such as India and China. This figure was published by the United
States Energy Information Administration. This can be summarised as a 2.2% annual increase in fossil
fuel usage in non OCED countries compared to that of 0.5% in OCED communities such as some of
the EU, North America and Australia. Figure 1.1 iProjected world energy consumption (Eia.gov, 2013)
Further study has shown that due to this increased demand for fossil fuels, the Global Carbon Project
showed a 2.1% increase in greenhouse gas emissions in 2012. With 57% of those emissions coming
from developing countries. India and China contributed a third of

How to Save Page 2
A man seeking financial advice said to his friend, I need to start saving some of my income and want
it to retain as much value as possible, what are my options?
You have five main saving options. Replied his friend. Cash, checking accounts, savings accounts,
bonds, or stocks. When saving you must keep inflation in mind. In order for your savings to retain
their value they must at least keep pace with inflation rates. If you wisely invest your savings, then
you can actually make a profit with it.
The average rate of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You can easily get a checking account that has no fees or minimum balance requirements. A checking
account is only a small step above cash when it comes to saving. A checking account is less risky as it
protects your money in the bank from being stolen, etc., but it does not protect your capital from
inflation. It is also nearly as liquid as cash and is thus a fairly similar option.
Savings Accounts
Saving accounts, your third option is a step up from the last two options, but not by much. Like the
checking account you can get a saving account from most banks. The average savings account has a
0.06% APY, annual
How to Save Page 3 percentage yield, or interest. Thus a savings account is low risk and fairly liquid
like cash or a checking account, but still does not keep up with inflation rates.
Bonds
Bonds, the fourth option also have their pros and cons. A bond is essentially a certain amount of
money lent to a company or business for a set amount of time. A bond issuer such as the US Treasury
first decides that they need say $1 million, they then divide it up into say $1,000 sections (the price of
a bond is determined by supply and demand). Bond holders buy those bonds and at the end of a period
they turn their bonds in to receive their initial amount back plus some interest. The amount of interest
the holder receives is based on the riskiness of the bond and the market rates. The benefits of bond
holding are the interest which can help counteract the

What Is The Ethos Of School Uniform
School uniform enhances school unity and community spirit and gives every student an equal status,
regardless of race, religion or culture, whether they are from the upper, middle or working class
backgrounds. This leads to young people feeling secure as a group and less likely to be bullied for not
wearing the latest fashion trend, thus banning uniforms would be atrocious.
On Thursday June 11th last year, I had an experience that really changed my ideology on the school
uniform. My seven year old sister had always loved walking home from school in her favourite yellow
rain coat and Fair Isle patterned hat that our late grandmother knitted for her for Christmas. She never

Case Study Of Hitachi, Ltd.
Hitachi, Ltd. follows the principle of Centralization as it is a Japanese firm and the Japanese are very
peculiar about the chain of commands or the levels of management that is to be followed in an
organization. But this is somehow changing because of the changing business dimensions all around
the world. So, as to remain in the market, it is required to respond and react accordingly to the market
and make some changes in the organization principles for easy global operations. Autonomy in
management basically means allowing a great deal of freedom to make choices in the workplace. A
manager who grants an employee autonomy generally outlines the goal of a project but allows the
employee to decide the best way to achieve that goal. So, in Hitachi, ltd. was less earlier but due to

Critical appreciation: Erving Goffman; The presentation of self in everyday life.
Erving Goffman was one of the most important Sociologists in the 20th century who focussed his
study on aspects of social life. It is often argued that Goffman was one of the twentieth century s most
remarkable practitioners of social science (Smith, 2006:1). He was born on the 11th June 1922 in
Alberta, Canada. His parents were Jewish and part of the group of Ukrainians who moved to Canada
before the beginning of the First World War. Initially Goffman studied Chemistry before moving to the

He also implies how an individual will be focussed on making a favourable show of him (a good
impression) which gives another explanation to why humans can be seen as actors in situations of
social interaction, they act how they think the audience (observers) want them to act. To summarise
his chapter on presentation Goffman s primary assumption is that individuals differ not by their
specific qualities, but by the situations they find themselves in to which they adopt different roles to
perform for the observer .
For this work Goffman gained inspiration from his own personal experiences, as his wife struggled
with mental illness and he chose to travel to the Shetland Islands to study the interaction in their
society. His wife s illness may have shaped his argument as another key piece of his work was
Asylums where he carried out fieldwork in a hospital where he wished to look at the social world of
an inmate. In his findings he was very critical and stated how behaviour that was deemed out of the
ordinary was simply someone not conforming to the rules and expectations of society. If those rules or
norms/values are broken that person would be viewed as an outsider and therefore displays an
inability to play the role of an actor .
A key theorist behind his work is Herbert Mead who published a book Mind, Self and Society and he

The Clean Water Act (USEPA)

Although the growing concern about cyanobacterial blooms, as well as the intoxication by
cyanotoxins worldwide, in the United States there is not any regulation for cyanobacteria or
cyanotoxins levels in the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) or in the Clean Water Act (CWA)

national drinking water regulation. Therefore, USEPA is the agency that is responsible for the

Thus, the use of phycocyanin (PC) a unique pigment present on freshwater cyanobacteria is proposed
for a quick estimator of cyanotoxins (Reynolds, 2006; Simis et al., 2005). Because of that, studies
have been focusing on the use of PC fluorescence properties to identify PC in vivo, since it is excited
in lower wavelengths (between 590 630nm regions of the visible spectrum) and it is emitted around
650nm (Gregor et al., 2007). Therefore, the monitoring of PC using in vivo fluorimeters can provide a
quick response for the risk assessment and management of cyanotoxins in freshwaters.
The agency that would be involved in implementing and enforcing this potential standard is the
USEPA, since according to the Public Law 114 45, Section 1459 (added in from August 7, 2015), the
USEPA is responsible to develop a strategic plan for the assessment, monitoring and management of
risks associated with cyanotoxins in drinking water (USEPA, 2015d). Therefore, through the USEPA s
Algal Toxin Risk Assessment and Management Strategic Plan for Drinking Water it will be possible to
implement as well as validate PC as an estimator for cyanobacteria and consequently to cyanotoxins

Dr. Stockmann s discovery to the public would ruin the community s main source of revenue, and

Film Noir And Scandinavia s Nordic Noir
In conclusion, Nordic Noir evidently both challenges and confirms the gender politics that were
introduced in film noir. These gender politics are mostly based on certain movements and fantasies
that exist within society. The international translation of Hollywood s film noir and Scandinavia s
Nordic Noir is therefore what makes each depicted text analytically so interesting.
The anxiety that infused film noir, born out of post war fears about the place women had found
outside of the family structure, challenged hesitant conceptions towards the role of women in family
and oppressive social relationships. Film noir s included gender politics were to alleviate male
confusion over women s roles and their sexual identity through a restoration of the patriarchy. The
femme fatale represented an independent and powerful femininity, rejecting the conventional role of
the devoted wife and loving mother that mainstream society had prescribed for women, but in the end
her transgression of social norms led to her own destruction and the destruction of the men who were
attracted to her.
However, a closer look also suggests a more diverse interpretation. Even when it depicts women as
dangerous and worthy of destruction, film noir shows that women are confined by the roles
traditionally open to them and that their destructive struggle for independence is a response to the
restrictions that are placed by men. Only a few films exemplify happy marriages, and their images of

Essay On Treatment And Punishment
Treatment and Punishment of Crime
Angle of attack= which is more effective, treatment or punishment?
A significant question that is asked about offenders is how can they be prevented from re offending?
There have been a number of therapies and treatments developed by psychologists in order to change
offending behaviour. Three main ones are; behaviour modification (token economies), anger
management and social skills training (SST). The government have also added measurements such as
zero tolerance and imprisonment is put in place in order to stop reoffenders. I feel punishment and
treatment are only more effective than the other when used for different types of crimes and on
different types of people. In this essay I am going to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore all effects of this treatment will be forgotten meaning being punished for behaviour may be
more effective in the outside world and in an institution.
Social skills training is a cognitive behavioural treatment based on the assumption that offending is
related to deficits in social skills. Techniques used in SST often vary but most involve modelling and
role play alongside instruction in skills and feedback on performance. There is a number of studies
that suggest SST leads to improvement in targeted social skills but what is less clear is whether the
improvements remain in the long term. Spence and Marzillier found that effects are visible after three
months but disappear after six and Goldstein et al found that only 15 20% of offenders applied their
skills to other situations. I feel that SST is not effective in terms of stopping people from re offending
but it is a way of helping people cope with their emotions which more than just prisoners need to be
able to do. Once someone is in a violent situation they are not going to take time to remember and
apply skills they have been taught they will act on instinct which more than likely means the wrong
actions will be carried out meaning they will be re offending so in this case

Building Concrete Structures Of Building Solid Stone...
Materials like tile covered concrete quickly supplanted marble as the primary building material and
more daring buildings soon followed, with great pillars supporting broad arches and domes rather than
dense lines of columns suspending flat architraves. Concrete also inspired the colonnade screen, a row
of ornamental columns in front of a load bearing wall. For smaller buildings, concrete s strength freed
the floor plan from rectangular cells to a more free flowing environment. Most of these developments
are described by Vitruvius writing in the first century AD in his work De Architectura. Ancient Roman
concrete was a mixture of lime mortar, sand with stone rubble, pozzolana, water, and stones, and
stronger than previously used concrete. The ancient builders placed these ingredients in wooden
frames where it hardened and bonded to a facing of stones or (more frequently) bricks. Concrete
construction proved to be more flexible and less costly than building solid stone buildings. The
materials were readily available and not difficult to transport. The wooden frames could be used more
than once, allowing builders to work quickly and efficiently. On return from campaigns in Greece, the
general Sulla returned with what is probably the most well known element of the early imperial
period: the mosaic, a decoration of colorful chips of stone inset into cement. This tiling method took
the empire by storm in the late first century and the second century and in the Roman home joined

What Is The Labyrinth Of Survival
Jorge Luis Borges once stated, There is no need to build a labyrinth when the entire universe is one. In
other words, universe is full of obscurity which is easy to get lost in. That s why I agree with him. We
were born on a world that is not of our own making which we want to survive in which shows that life
is a labyrinth of survival itself without knowing what we are surviving from or what we are surviving
for. Living, dying, loving, suffering, losing... Which one, which darkness are we trying to escape of?

Super Soldiers And Super Soldier Experimentation Essay
Super Soldier Experiments Going through life, at times, one would wonder how vast the greed of
human beings is. Is it as dangerous as we think? Wanting something? Desiring something so much
that you would risk everything you own and love? Is it as sinful as we are taught as kids to believe?
All we have to do is take those desires and create something good out of it. However, when we desire
something that affects the rights of other living things, it is extremely bad and these questions will all
be answered with a solid Yes. . I will be sharing with you the opinion of many others whom are
against such situations; situations such as super soldier experiments.
Super Soldier experimentation is a version of human experiments on military soldiers based on the
idea of making them the perfect killing machines. The government in charge of a certain military base
doesn t want any interference of human emotions, hunger, PTSD, and fatigue. For those in charge,
being rid of those pesky human emotions would benefit them greatly due to the fact that those sorts of
emotions may negatively impact the army s progress in defeating their enemies. These kinds of
experiments as well as other types of human experiments have been going on for as long as the first
World War or, perhaps, even before then. Numerous have been articles put out on very notable figures
in history partaking in these supposedly top secret events. Genetically modified humans have been an

Allegory And Symbolism In Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown
It is hard to read beyond the third paragraph of Young Goodman Brown without finding allegory and
symbolism. The opening seems realistic Goodman Brown, a young Puritan, leaves his home in
colonial Salem to take an overnight trip but his wife s name, Faith, immediately suggests a symbolic
reading. Before long, Brown s walk into the dream like forest seems like an allegorical trip into evil.
The idea that Hawthorne shows by this trip is that people are attracted to sin through temptation which
leads them towards a path of isolation and distrust. He develops this thought in the allegory and in
many symbols, particularly the staff, the pink ribbon, and Faith.
The allegory is about Goodman Brown following his temptation and how it is ... Show more content

The pink ribbons represent innocence, Faith wears those pink ribbons the pink ribbons of her cap (1),
so she is thought to be innocent and childlike but as it turns out she is a secret sinner attracted to sin
and temptation like everyone.
The imagery in Young Goodman Brown is very dark and gothic like. Throughout the story the narrator
tries to capture evil within the imagery. The first appearance of a dark imagery is when Goodman
Brown describes the road he takes towards the forest, he describes it as a dreary road (8) he also
describes all the trees of the forest to appear gloomy like. Another image the author paints is when
Goodman Brown is walking down the road he then says that there might be a devilish indian (9)
behind the trees. This image captures the evil and darkness that is going on in the forest and we can
see this clearly through the imagery. The imagery also ties back to the thematic statement.
Goodman Brown like every character in the story becomes tempted to sin. He admits that he is a
horrible person what wretch am I (7) for leaving Faith to follow his temptation. But he is attracted and
tempted to sin like every human being. His temptation leads him to become a stern, sad... distrustful
(72) man. After giving into the temptation of attending the meeting in the forest, he gives into evil and
does not know what to believe or trust anymore. All because he went away from his faith. Even

Difference Between Reasonable Suspicion And Probable Cause
Chapter 5 1. Answer the Chapter Review Questions 1, 5, 7, 10 and 11. 1. Compare and contrast
reasonable suspicion and probable cause. Reasonable suspicion is a reasonable likelihood that a crime
has been, is being, or will be committed. It is a reasonable belief based on facts or circumstances and
is informed by a police officer s training and experience. Reasonable suspicion is seen as more than a
guess or hunch but is less than probable cause. Probable cause is the logical belief, supported by facts
and circumstances, which a crime has been, is being, or will be committed. The difference between the
two are the fact that probable cause has evidence or is fact based whereas reasonable suspicion is a
hunch. 5. Compare and contrast the Aguilar Spinelli test with the totality of circumstances test in
Illinois v. Gates. The Aguilar Spinelli test states that a magistrate must be informed of the reasons to
support the conclusion that such an informant is reliable and credible. The magistrate must be
informed of some of the underlying circumstances relied on by the person providing the information
which also went by the name of the two prong test. The totality of circumstances cancelled out the two
prong test with the rules suggests that there is no single deciding factor, that one must consider all the

Particle Fever Essay
Particle fever is movie about a single experiment, which lasted 19 long years and consisted of 10,000
hardworking and dedicated scientist. The whole experiment was to find a particle called the Higgs
Boson. The Higgs Boson was a particle that most scientist thought held all things of the world
together, to prove this theory that they had made the scientist had to conduct a thorough experiment.
For scientist to begin the experiment they had to collect and test different parts of data using the LHC
which was a machine that produced different elements to see if the Higgs were even real or not. The
LHC was the World s largest and most expensive machine. The LHC was made up of seven ton
electromagnets, and the purpose was to compare protons to the speed of lighting. There are four points

At the conclusion of the meeting, it was stated that the Higgs mass was 125 GEV. The crowd at the

they needed to say that the Higgs was a God particle and it was the particle that made the world what
it is today. After everything the LHC will be closed and shut off and after two years goes by will be
running at full power instead of half power. Scientists hoped to get even better results than they did the
first time with running the LHC. The experiment was a huge success. There was a 20,000 prize and a
Nobel Prize awarded to David Kaplan, Peter Higgs, and Mark Levinson at the conclusion of the
filming of the movie, which lasted from 2008 to 2012. The movie was not actually released until the
year 2014. Many scientist today still try to say that their theory of the Higgs is incorrect but no one has

Ethnic minority disadvantage in the labour market
This research explores differences between ethnic groups in labour market participation
(unemployment, employment and hours worked) and employment status (low, mid and high skilled
occupation levels) for those in work.
It examines whether there is clustering into particular occupations for some ethnic groups, and looks
at how much geography matters for employment and job status for different ethnic groups.
This paper finds that:
In terms of unemployment, the overwhelming picture is one of continuing ethnic minority
disadvantage compared with the White British majority group;
There is a considerable difference in unemployment rates between places for each ethnic group, as
well as between ethnic groups; and
Ethnic inequalities between groups have persisted over time.

its attractiveness relative to other trade areas. These models provide an approximation of store trade

Analysis Of The Water Related Adaptation Interventions For...
At the community level, from my observation in work, I recognized that the local communities have
the best capability to adapt with the adverse impacts. People had managed to protect their livelihood
resources such as cropping fields, ponds, aquaculture farms and domestic facilities. For example, in
the early rainy season, some focal groups of local residents are formed. These groups are responsible
for monitoring the water levels and protecting proactively the irrigation facilities and the critical areas
of dykes. In order to cope with inundation, local residents have to work together to dredge the small
channels and to upgrade the paddy field embankments when they get the heavy rain forecast. They
have stored fresh water and changed in their water use to cope with potential floods, storm, inundation
and drought.
In short, the water related adaptation interventions in Thai Binh province focuses on upgrading hard
facilities in irrigation and water supply systems; capacity building programs; afforestation in coastal
zones and developing the local communities respond effectively to climate change. iii. Management

Inorganic growth is a system of expanding the company by means of joining together with other

Dust Bowl Case Study
All through in the 1930s, eastern Colorado alongside most of the Southern Plains states, experienced
outrageous dry seasons. Baca County was among the regions hardest hit, close to the focal point of
what was named the Dust Bowl. Southeastern Colorado got just 126 aggregate creeps of dampness for
every one of the years somewhere around 1930 and 1939. This was 205 inches not exactly the earlier

Clean was normal in the semi dry territories of Colorado when the high fields winds blew, so nobody
was truly amazed to see a couple of dusters in eastern Colorado in 1931. They returned the following

attempt to create a simple, consistent schedule to carry your family through the school year.
Be Flexible
Schedule conflicts will happen. In addition to school schedules, co parents must now accommodate
for recitals, football practice, field trips, and other school related functions. The more flexible you are
with visitation, the easier it will be on the entire family. Make a point to plan out events ahead of time,
substituting visitation times when necessary. Sitting in for your co parent on occasion can benefit you
greatly, should you run into your own schedule conflict(s) down the road.
Plan Ahead
The school year is riddled with parent teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and various holidays.
Planning ahead will help you and your co parent avoid unnecessary turmoil while ensuring that your
child s needs are met. If you want to take your child away for the holidays, be sure to discuss your

Long Distance Movements Of Animals
Introduction
For most species, movement is essential for life. Movement of seeds helps plants disperse, while
animals move to forage, reproduce, find alternate habitat types, repopulate areas where they have been
extirpated, and maintain genetic diversity needed to adapt to change. If individuals cannot move
across a landscape to mix with individuals of other populations, local extinctions can result.
Additionally, the smaller a population is, the more vulnerable it is to extinction if that population is
also isolated (i.e., lacks the ability to intermix with other populations (Fagan Holmes 2006)). Juveniles
are often especially important for movements that help maintain genetic diversity in populations
(Rothermel Semlitsch 2002).
Long distance movements of animals can take one of two forms, migration or dispersal. Migratory
movements consist of daily, seasonal, or even generational movements among habitat types while
dispersal movements are movements away from a normal range, providing for the mixing of genetic
materials, or the population of new habitats or repopulation of previously occupied but currently
vacant habitats.
When animals migrate, it is because there is a need for individuals in a population to move to a
different habitat patch. These movements can be to reach a breeding site (Sinevro 2007, Webster et al.
2002), a more favorable climate (Peñuelas Filella 2001), an overwintering area (Wilcove Wikelski
2008), or better forage (Olson et al. 2006).

Did The Military Use X-Ray For Profit Or Health Purposes
X Ray have been around since the late 1890s. It was created and used for medicine. It is an invisible
ray that can pass through solid matter. X Ray was perfect for the use of locating broke bones through
the skin of a body. Shortly after it was produced for medicine, the military saw a better fit for the new

II. NANOWIRE SYNTHESIS
Many of the papers included in this survey concentrated on methods or materials used to synthesize
nanowires. Most nanowire synthesis occurs via Vapor Liquid Solid (VLS) processes. VLS processes
use a liquid catalyst to draw components out of a vapor phase and deposit them in a solid phase. While
terms such as laser ablation and chemical vapor deposition may often be used to describe the synthesis
technique used in a particular experiment, this commonly refers only to the means by which the vapor
phase is produced or transported. For example, laser ablation uses a laser to vaporize a source
material, forming the vapor phase that is absorbed and later deposited by the catalyst droplet as the
nanowire grows.
Silicon nanowires often are synthesized through VLS processes [1 3]. Specifically, a substrate is
coated with gold nanoparticles and then heated until the gold melts and forms tiny droplets. A silicon
containing vapor, typically silane, or
SiH4, is then passed over the substrate. At the vapor gold interface, silicon atoms are stripped from the
silane and are absorbed into the nanoparticles. When the saturation limit of silicon in gold has been
reached, the silicon precipitates out of the droplet onto the substrate.
This precipitate builds up and lifts the catalyst away from the substrate, giving

Moldavite Pendant Research Paper
The Log Bench What I need, I told myself, is to take the dogs for a walk. Maybe then I ll remember.
Two weeks I d spent looking for my grandmother s Moldavite pendant. I d been going crazy retracing
my steps notwithstanding the sentimental significance it held for me. Lying on her death bed, my
grandmother had given it to me for protection when I was fourteen. She cautioned me of the strong
energies it held and that this pendant would protect me from negative entities. Her great aunt had
given it to her with warnings of the intense frequency and high vibration that resonated from this
stone. Grandmother claimed it had brought true love into her life shortly after it was bequeathed to
her. My grandfather had served in both wars ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Remembering the intense reaction I d felt from the first time my grandmother had placed the pendant
into my palm and thereupon I knew that he was genuinely speaking. Continuing he added, If you look
to the south of the nest you will see your home. Ever since you were entrusted with the pendant I have
been watching as it s been my duty from the beginning of time to safeguard the Moldavite pendant
and its keeper. There have been many keepers of the pendant hence their reward has been protection.
Placing this pendant into the wrong hands would have an adverse impact on the earth and mankind as
it can be used destructively. It s natural green crystals have powerful transforming abilities that should
only to be used for the advantage of this planet. Are you following me? Yes, I have felt its power, I
replied as I cast my gaze downwards, but I lost it a couple weeks ago. I ve searched everywhere to no
avail. My grandmother entrusted me with it and now it s gone. I ve no idea where to search next. Will
you help me find it? Sparkles appeared in the crows eyes as he replied, It s here under my wing, and
pulled a silvery chain from under his wing. Beautiful arcs of rays projected all around us from this
delicate, oval, forest green pendant as the sunlight touched

Amory Lovins’ Logic in Natural Capitalism Essay Amory Lovins Logic in Natural Capitalism In the first chapter of Natural Capitalism, author Amory Lovins proposes a new method of capitalism that recognizes the importance of natural and human capital in the industrial system. Conventional capitalism places value only on capital that yields financial gain, and ignores the human and natural parts of the equation. Lovins points to this as the reason for many of the environmental, social, and economic problems on our planet today. He argues that the destructive practices of conventional capitalism must cease, and that a new industrial revolution must happen that will change how human beings support themselves and sustain the resources of the planet. In this chapter he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lovins contrast of sustainable methods versus destructive methods convinces the readers to agree with his claim and follow his proposed changes. He discusses four key strategies for implementing natural capitalism; radical resource productivity, biomimicry, service and flow economy, and investing in natural capital. Radical resource productivity involves finding every way possible to increase the usage that humans get from natural resources. This lowers the cost of materials and decreases the amount of pollution due to wasteful consumption of resources. Biomimicry is the term given for modeling the mechanical processes of our industries after the self sustaining and interdependent processes found in nature. Such a transformation would make factories more efficient and less polluting. Creating a service and flow economy means that consumers would pay for the service a product provides instead of buying the product itself. Instead of throwing away worn out products, consumers can just return them to the manufacturer, who will repair them or recycle them. Investing in natural capital means that corporations value living systems. In this sort of system, logging companies would value not only the lumber that they harvest, but the forest habitat where the trees came from as well. This gives companies motivation to not strip a forest bare because they now profit from a thriving forest habitat. This Lovins calls these points the basis of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was in her school s glee club and church choir. Growing up, both of her parents were alcoholics. Her mother died from cancer when she was fourteen. She and her brothers were cared for by her grandparents. Her relationship with her father started falling apart as a result from his drinking habits. They worsened after his wife passed away. Susan had to take on a job and her younger brother because her father left them. She could not focus on school so she dropped out and took on a full time job. She was forced to move out of her grandparents because there was not enough room. Her younger brother stayed while she had to support herself. Her older brother joined the navy. • 4. Speech Is Power Of Speech Changed The Course Of History Essay Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed the importance of speech in one short sentence: Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. In 2008, the power of speech changed the course of history; the first African American president was elected, transcending years of racial inequality. For many blacks in the U.S., and many around the world, Barack Obama s presidency was a step closer to righting America s 400 year old wrong: slavery and subsequent discrimination toward the black race. Obama s victory was traced back to his powerful speech and his natural ability to charismatically orate. In the end, however, it was Obama s political philosophy that persuaded individuals to support him. Following his victory in 2008, President Barack Obama used rhetoric to advocate for change, hope, and a united America where the window of opportunity could remain open for all. The son of a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, Barack Hussein Obama II spent most of his life feeling excluded in the racially homogenous state of Hawaii. Despite his childhood hardships, Obama graduated from Columbia University with a political science major in 1983. Later, he entered Harvard Law School where he became the first black president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review in 1990 (Nelson). Majorities of the chaos still have effects on people living in coastal areas. Because of the Earth s large capacity of water and relationship with gravity, tidal waves through extreme tidal storms are created. The Moon heavily influences the movement of Earth s tides by shifting and relating land features, using its gravitational pull to change the height of the tides, and also affecting the speed of the Moon s revolution. To start, the Earth s aquatic tides are the constant rise and fall of bodies of water every day (Jacobs 9). • 9. School Shooting In The United States Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, approximately every week, a mass shooting occurs. The number of school shootings is growing and we are not on the brink of finding a solution. Most school shooting are in the United States rather than overseas. The number of school shootings in the United States is increasing due to the lack of mental health care, excessive violent video games, and the accessibility of guns. Often we link school shootings to people who are recluse and spend hours playing violent video games. Most violent video games promote killing, by giving rewards. Evidence supports that this is true, but video games are not the only cause of crazy, illogical shooters walking into an unprotected school setting to kill students and staff. After the intensive investigation of many of the recent school shootings,14 were linked to violent video games including a local one at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. • 10. Infanticide Is The Killing Of An Infant This paper discusses whether it is ever permissible to commit infanticide or not. Infanticide is the killing of an infant or the practice of killing newborn infants. It is a difficult subject to discuss since infanticide seems morally repugnant at first glimpse, though it becomes increasingly complicated as we reflect on particular nuances in real world cases. ROADMAP: I argue that it is impermissible to commit infanticide under any circumstance since committing murder of a person under any circumstance is wrong. Infanticide in simple words is the murder of a newborn infant. There is no difference between killing a newborn and a fully grown adult. Both of them can be defined as persons since they both possess a human essence that makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence, fully grown adults differ from infants due to the fact that they value life and have the capacity to retain their memories and personal identity. They can engage in rational thought and appreciate their existence. Infants aren t even capable of grasping their existence, leave alone any memories. Hence, they shouldn t even be considered to be persons. However, this objection isn t valid since eventually even infants will develop the capability to think, retain memories and value life since abilities are developmental in nature. Also, if rationality and self awareness define personhood and determine the moral significance of persons, then there are many fully grown adults who can be disqualified as persons, for example an adult under coma. According to this argument, since comatose patients are unconscious and can t rationally think at the time, killing them would be permissible too. ARGUMENT I argue that infanticide is impermissible under any circumstance. I will support my stance by arguing against Peter Singer s argument that supports the infanticide of disabled infants. In Taking Life: Humans, Singer states that if we can morally kill a disabled fetus that has no self consciousness, it follows that we can morally kill a disabled infant that has no self consciousness. Take note that Singer argues in favor of committing infanticide of only disabled infants if it serves the interests of the parents. He does not argue that it is right to ... For this work Goffman gained inspiration from his own personal experiences, as his wife struggled with mental illness and he chose to travel to the Shetland Islands to study the interaction in their society. These gender politics are mostly based on certain movements and fantasies that exist within society. The international translation of Hollywood s film noir and Scandinavia s Nordic Noir is therefore what makes each depicted text analytically so interesting. The anxiety that infused film noir, born out of post war fears about the place women had found outside of the family structure, challenged hesitant conceptions towards the role of women in family and oppressive social relationships. Film noir s included gender politics were to alleviate male confusion over women s roles and their sexual identity through a restoration of the patriarchy. The femme fatale represented an independent and powerful femininity, rejecting the conventional role of the devoted wife and loving mother that mainstream society had prescribed for women, but in the end her transgression of social norms led to her own destruction and the destruction of the men who were attracted to her. However, a closer look also suggests a more diverse interpretation. Even when it depicts women as dangerous and worthy of destruction, film noir shows that women are confined by the roles traditionally open to them and that their destructive struggle for independence is a response to the restrictions that are placed by men. • 24. Building Concrete Structures Of Building Solid Stone... Materials like tile covered concrete quickly supplanted marble as the primary building material and more daring buildings soon followed, with great pillars supporting broad arches and domes rather than dense lines of columns suspending flat architraves. Concrete also inspired the colonnade screen, a row of ornamental columns in front of a load bearing wall. For smaller buildings, concrete s strength freed the floor plan from rectangular cells to a more free flowing environment. Most of these developments are described by Vitruvius writing in the first century AD in his work De Architectura. Ancient Roman concrete was a mixture of lime mortar, sand with stone rubble, pozzolana, water, and stones, and stronger than previously used concrete. The ancient builders placed these ingredients in wooden frames where it hardened and bonded to a facing of stones or (more frequently) bricks. Concrete construction proved to be more flexible and less costly than building solid stone buildings. The materials were readily available and not difficult to transport. The wooden frames could be used more than once, allowing builders to work quickly and efficiently. On return from campaigns in Greece, the general Sulla returned with what is probably the most well known element of the early imperial period: the mosaic, a decoration of colorful chips of stone inset into cement. This tiling method took the empire by storm in the late first century and the second century and in the Roman home joined ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Super Soldiers And Super Soldier Experimentation Essay Super Soldier Experiments Going through life, at times, one would wonder how vast the greed of human beings is. Is it as dangerous as we think? Wanting something? Desiring something so much that you would risk everything you own and love? Is it as sinful as we are taught as kids to believe? All we have to do is take those desires and create something good out of it. However, when we desire something that affects the rights of other living things, it is extremely bad and these questions will all be answered with a solid Yes. . I will be sharing with you the opinion of many others whom are against such situations; situations such as super soldier experiments. Super Soldier experimentation is a version of human experiments on military soldiers based on the idea of making them the perfect killing machines. The government in charge of a certain military base doesn t want any interference of human emotions, hunger, PTSD, and fatigue. For those in charge, being rid of those pesky human emotions would benefit them greatly due to the fact that those sorts of emotions may negatively impact the army s progress in defeating their enemies. These kinds of experiments as well as other types of human experiments have been going on for as long as the first World War or, perhaps, even before then. Numerous have been articles put out on very notable figures in history partaking in these supposedly top secret events. Genetically modified humans have been an ambitious venture for ... • 28. Allegory And Symbolism In Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown It is hard to read beyond the third paragraph of Young Goodman Brown without finding allegory and symbolism. The opening seems realistic Goodman Brown, a young Puritan, leaves his home in colonial Salem to take an overnight trip but his wife s name, Faith, immediately suggests a symbolic reading. Before long, Brown s walk into the dream like forest seems like an allegorical trip into evil. The idea that Hawthorne shows by this trip is that people are attracted to sin through temptation which leads them towards a path of isolation and distrust. He develops this thought in the allegory and in many symbols, particularly the staff, the pink ribbon, and Faith. The allegory is about Goodman Brown following his temptation and how it is ... The pink ribbons represent innocence, Faith wears those pink ribbons the pink ribbons of her cap (1), so she is thought to be innocent and childlike but as it turns out she is a secret sinner attracted to sin and temptation like everyone. The imagery in Young Goodman Brown is very dark and gothic like. Throughout the story the narrator tries to capture evil within the imagery. The first appearance of a dark imagery is when Goodman Brown describes the road he takes towards the forest, he describes it as a dreary road (8) he also describes all the trees of the forest to appear gloomy like. Another image the author paints is when Goodman Brown is walking down the road he then says that there might be a devilish indian (9) behind the trees. This image captures the evil and darkness that is going on in the forest and we can see this clearly through the imagery. The imagery also ties back to the thematic statement. Goodman Brown like every character in the story becomes tempted to sin. He admits that he is a horrible person what wretch am I (7) for leaving Faith to follow his temptation. But he is attracted and tempted to sin like every human being. His temptation leads him to become a stern, sad... distrustful (72) man. Compare and contrast reasonable suspicion and probable cause. Reasonable suspicion is a reasonable likelihood that a crime has been, is being, or will be committed. It is a reasonable belief based on facts or circumstances and is informed by a police officer s training and experience. Reasonable suspicion is seen as more than a guess or hunch but is less than probable cause. Probable cause is the logical belief, supported by facts and circumstances, which a crime has been, is being, or will be committed. The difference between the two are the fact that probable cause has evidence or is fact based whereas reasonable suspicion is a hunch. 5. These models provide an approximation of store trade area by putting the distribution of all locations (including competitors) into a geographical context and evaluating each location s relative attractiveness. • 34. Analysis Of The Water Related Adaptation Interventions For... At the community level, from my observation in work, I recognized that the local communities have the best capability to adapt with the adverse impacts. People had managed to protect their livelihood resources such as cropping fields, ponds, aquaculture farms and domestic facilities. For example, in the early rainy season, some focal groups of local residents are formed. These groups are responsible for monitoring the water levels and protecting proactively the irrigation facilities and the critical areas of dykes. In order to cope with inundation, local residents have to work together to dredge the small channels and to upgrade the paddy field embankments when they get the heavy rain forecast. They have stored fresh water and changed in their water use to cope with potential floods, storm, inundation and drought. In short, the water related adaptation interventions in Thai Binh province focuses on upgrading hard facilities in irrigation and water supply systems; capacity building programs; afforestation in coastal zones and developing the local communities respond effectively to climate change. iii. • 38. Long Distance Movements Of Animals Introduction For most species, movement is essential for life. Movement of seeds helps plants disperse, while animals move to forage, reproduce, find alternate habitat types, repopulate areas where they have been extirpated, and maintain genetic diversity needed to adapt to change. If individuals cannot move across a landscape to mix with individuals of other populations, local extinctions can result. Additionally, the smaller a population is, the more vulnerable it is to extinction if that population is also isolated (i.e., lacks the ability to intermix with other populations (Fagan Holmes 2006)). Juveniles are often especially important for movements that help maintain genetic diversity in populations (Rothermel Semlitsch 2002). Long distance movements of animals can take one of two forms, migration or dispersal. Migratory movements consist of daily, seasonal, or even generational movements among habitat types while dispersal movements are movements away from a normal range, providing for the mixing of genetic materials, or the population of new habitats or repopulation of previously occupied but currently vacant habitats. When animals migrate, it is because there is a need for individuals in a population to move to a different habitat patch. These movements can be to reach a breeding site (Sinevro 2007, Webster et al. 2002), a more favorable climate (Peñuelas Filella 2001), an overwintering area (Wilcove Wikelski 2008), or better forage (Olson et al. 2006). ... NANOWIRE SYNTHESIS Many of the papers included in this survey concentrated on methods or materials used to synthesize nanowires. Most nanowire synthesis occurs via Vapor Liquid Solid (VLS) processes. VLS processes use a liquid catalyst to draw components out of a vapor phase and deposit them in a solid phase. While terms such as laser ablation and chemical vapor deposition may often be used to describe the synthesis technique used in a particular experiment, this commonly refers only to the means by which the vapor phase is produced or transported. For example, laser ablation uses a laser to vaporize a source material, forming the vapor phase that is absorbed and later deposited by the catalyst droplet as the nanowire grows. Silicon nanowires often are synthesized through VLS processes [1 3]. Specifically, a substrate is coated with gold nanoparticles and then heated until the gold melts and forms tiny droplets. A silicon containing vapor, typically silane, or SiH4, is then passed over the substrate. At the vapor gold interface, silicon atoms are stripped from the silane and are absorbed into the nanoparticles. When the saturation limit of silicon in gold has been reached, the silicon precipitates out of the droplet onto the substrate. This precipitate builds up and lifts the catalyst away from the substrate, giving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
